As soon as the two boys turned around, Isabel started turning a bit pink. She could immediately tell what they thought about her. That she was a stuck up know-it-all, the type to mention the homework to the professor just before the end of class, or to tell on you when you were sneaking notes. The Gryffindor on the left was a boy she'd seen around. As first year Gryffindors they shared a few classes together, and she was pretty certain his name was Odilon Wilde.

"Well hello gorgeous. he said pleasantly. "What can I do for-" Just as Isabel parted her lips to answer him he was interrupted.
"You reaaaally wanna listen to this bore-fest?" The Slytherin on the right cut in. The disdain in his voice and expression made the pink in Isabel's freckled cheeks turn a bit darker. Was it really her fault she had a lot of trouble keeping up? This whole world was so confusing and new, and the students were given so much work and none of it really made sense to her.

What are you, a mudblood? the boy went on. Isabel's eyes widened out of hurt and the blush on her face was wiped out and replaced by a white sheen of shock. The outright saying of the slur left her speechless, and she was left stupidly blinking back at the Slytherin as he continued. She'd never been called a mudblood to her face before, but had been told by her friends how offensive it was, how wars had been fought over the opinion that mudbloods weren't worthy of magic. "Stop being a teachers pet, you will possibly get more friends" Dumbfounded, Isabel tried not to look too offended and haughtily looked away. However, it was taking a lot of effort to keep tears from filling her eyes.

It didn't escape her notice that Odilon also wasn't too fond of the word. He snapped his head to his deskmate and hissed something too quiet for Isabel to hear. Quickly blinking her watery eyes back into focus, she checked to see if professor Lécuyer was paying attention to them. Concluding he wasn't, she turned back to see Odilon mouth an apology. Something about him was enchanting. Was it his bashful smile, or his eyes keeping her captured. She almost forgot why she'd been upset, but managed to shake herself out of it. Raising a questioning eyebrow at Odilon, she turned back to the Slytherin.

"Listen tough guy." She hissed sarcastically with narrowed eyes, slightly bending forward over her desk. Her curls shifting over her shoulders. "I'm not going to get in a petty fight and be insulted simply for trying to pay attention in school." She went on. "Quite frankly, getting so upset over someone asking you to quiet down speaks volumes about your insecurities" Isabel said looking him up and down. She was acting all brave, but she really wasn't good at confronting others. She was already regretting speaking up in the first place. "Please" she softened her expression, glancing over at Odilon. "I don't want to cause problems, I honestly find this subject really difficult and need all the help I can get"

She hoped the honesty in her voice would placate the Slytherin a bit. She genuinely had no problems with either of them, in fact she would probably get along very well with such quick-witted boys. Hogwarts education was just something sacred to Isabel, after all there wasn't much else she was naturally gifted at, other than magic.

I asked if she wanted to listen to the bore fest and laughed quietly at how pink she went. Nerd. I asked if she was a muddy and the red tint left her face and was replaced with a coat of shock. She blinked. I raised an eyebrow. “Uh, hello?” I looked to Odi, “Have I broken her?” shrugging, I basically told her that if she carried on being a teachers pet then she would continue to have no friends. Harsh? Maybe.

She looked away causing me to smirk. Then Odi had the audacity to call me a troll… I looked at him gone out, mouth agape. “Rude. You should look in the mirror mate,” I muttered with an eye roll, a smile still on my face. Bet he was trying to impress the lady. “I’m not wrong! Can’t believe you actual wanna pay attention,” but that was mainly a mumble to myself, great, now bossy pants has come in and he don’t want anything to do with me. Stupid mudblood… or halfie I guess.

Then she managed to find a backbone, calling me tough guy. Thanks for the compliment, crybaby. Something about not wanting to get into a petty fight for wanting to pay attention. “What’s the point in paying attention? We need to soak up the fun before at least fourth year! Go find a book. You aren’t missing much darling,” I told her.

Then she spoke about my insecurities.

Says the girl that turned into a ghost when I uttered the oh-so-scary “m word” to her!” I used my fingers to put quotation marks. “If you’re that embarrassed by it, maybe that speaks volumes to how you think about yourself. Believe you have dirty blood, do you?” I snapped, anger rising. How dare she talk about me like that.

She looked at Odilon, begging, pathetic. “I don't want to cause problems, I honestly find this subject really difficult and need all the help I can get,” she protested, an air of earnestness in her voice. I didn’t let my look drop, clenched jaw, hard eyes, but that hit. I always struggled with tutor because I wasn’t being taught right.

Why should she get the respect for my learning I didn’t get? Huh? “If you’re that bothered, take my seat! I’m out of here! Come if you want Odi,” I muttered, shoving everything into my bag. I then went to stand up…

Isabel turned a light shade of pink as the two boys turned to see what she wanted. Odi smirked, used to this reaction when he looked at people. Lucian was less amused. "Uh, hello?" He asked before turning to Odi. "Have I broken her?"
Odi could not suppress a snicker. He felt bad for the girl but at the same time it was entertaining to watch her fluster.

After reprimanding Lucian for his use of a purist slur, Lucian's mouth dropped open in surprise. "Rude. You should look in the mirror mate." He shot back at Odi.
"I can take an insult Lucian but let's keep it believable now." Odi said, firing back an impish wink at Lucian.
Isabel had evidently not recovered from the mud blood comment, for she was now berating Lucian for his use of the term. Odi winced. He tried to think of a resolution that would let them all leave without him ending up in detention but the situation was fast escalating. As Lucian ranted about her dirty blood (Odi rolled his eyes at the outdated rhetoric) Isabel turned to Odi, evidently hoping he would take her side. "I don't want to cause problems." She said, her expression softening as she looked at Odi "I don't want to cause problems, I honestly find this subject really difficult and need all the help I can get."

A brief moment of humanity crossed Odi's face and he considered his options for a moment. He couldn't relate to her constant need to pay attention, he found magical theory quite easy to follow along with, but on the other hand she was right about Lucian. The guy was prejudiced, selfish, cantankerous, spoiled- All the things Odi had heard about himself all his life.

Lucian got up in a huff and shoved his stuff into his bag "Come if you want Odi."
Odi rolled his eyes and gave Isabel an apologetic look. "Sorry kid." He said, slinking his books into his bag with one fluid movement. He got up and clapped a hand on Lucians shoulder just a little too hard to be completely comfortable. "You're a prat. You know that?" There was an element of reproach in his voice, but also a slight hint of intrigue and familiarity. He got the feeling that he and Lucian were cut from the same cloth, as it were.

Isabel's light brown eyes shifted between the two boys incredulously. She just couldn't believe what was coming out of the young Slytherin's mouth. All because she'd asked them to tone down the chatter. Overreaction much? She hadn't been that rude. Had she? As Lucian kept insulting her work-ethic she crossed her arms and let him go on, until he said something that irked her.

“Says the girl that turned into a ghost when I uttered the oh-so-scary “m word. If you’re that embarrassed by it, maybe that speaks volumes to how you think about yourself. Believe you have dirty blood, do you?” Isabel narrowed her eyes at him and blinked slowly, as if she couldn't believe the nerve of it all. "I've really got to explain to you that calling someone an outright slur is offensive?"she scoffed, trying to keep her voice down. "I for one, couldn't care less about blood. I think we're all equal, 'dirty' or 'clean' blood, I'm not embarrassed at all." she went on, mimicking his air quotation marks.

She watched as his jaw locked, her eyes roaming up to momentarily lock into his hard ones. If she was being honest, his comment hurt, but it was the genuine belief in the idea that half-blood wizards were worth less than full-bloods that hurt worse. Growing up mixed-race, in the human sense, hadn't been the easiest in a city like Leeds. Northern England is not necessarily known for its melting pot of cultures. Finding out that even in the wizarding world she would always be reduced to a half-blood stung like a nasty cut. Swallowing away that thought, she watched as the Slytherin student started shoving his things in his bag. "If you’re that bothered, take my seat! I’m out of here! Come if you want Odi" Glancing at Odilon she could already tell his response by the apologetic look on his face. "Sorry kid."

"Fine." Isabel muttered in response, trying to keep the hint of disappointment hidden. She turned back to the lecture, not wanting waste another second arguing such a futile case and ruffled her hair to get it to sit right. Looking back to the blackboard she realised she'd missed a whole section of the class explaining the homework. 'Great', she thought to herself. 'I've made enemies and managed to fall behind at the same time. Well done, Wiseacre.'
