Odi had trouble getting his head down to work at the best of times, but Defence against the Dark Arts was one he actually looked forward to. He was significantly more interested in learning self defence than he was in watching a plant bloom, and he found professor Lécuyer to be an engaging teacher. Not today, though.
Doxies. They were learning about a wizarding pest that Odi had watched his father dispatch numerous times with a wordless flick of his wand. Some students - Namely the Ravenclaws - seemed genuinely engaged in the class, but Odi simply rolled his eyes and turned to the Slytherin boy sat next to him in class. In his mind, he debated wether to engage with the guy. He didn't seem too engaged with the class either, and Odi didn't need someone ratting on him to the professor so this boy seemed like a safe bet. "Can you believe this is what we're learning about? They might as well teach us how to set a fly trap. I normally like professor Lécuyers class."
He leaned back in his chair and shifted his body down a little so that he wasn't as visible to the teacher. "This lesson's obviously for all the muggleborns who've never seen a doxy before in their life. It's a waste of time for the rest of us." Through the corner of his eye, he peered at the boy next to him, gauging a reaction. Odi didn't consider himself a purist by any means, but he found it frustrating to have to wait for his classmates to catch up to what he considered basic knowledge. He paused to see if the other boy would react positively or negatively to this comment.
All of a sudden, Odi realised something. He had seen this boy around school a couple of times. They had never spoken before, but he was certain he could remember his name. "Hey, I know you right? Or, like, I've seen you?" Odi racked his brain trying to recall the boy's name. it was something like Luke or Lucas or... "Lucian?"

This lesson was a little of a drag, I usually love Defense Against the Dark Arts, how can you not, but Doxies were something else. My grandad has a monthly moan about them and my father frequently gets rid of them — although thankfully there haven’t been many lately! Doesn’t stop my grandfather complaining, it is funny when he gets passionate about it.
So, while everyone else coughRavenclowns and some Snakes were really listening in on the lesson! I, however, was more bored than when my Cousin Andrew talks about what he found on his travels. And I have literally fell asleep during his rants before. The only thing keeping me sane was this piece of parchment. I was doodling random patterns but I drew the moon a lot, mainly different styles of the full moon. I wouldn’t say they were the best but I liked them.
I did notice that, out of the corner of my eye, my partner looked about as bored and fed up as I did. Then he finally spoke to me, about how he can’t believe it. And I agreed. This was pointless. “Yeah, I do too. They usually are fun and interesting,” I agreed, ceasing in my drawing to look at him. I think I’ve seen him around but we’ve never spoken. I think he did suit the hair cut though, very stylish. “But like, how can you not know how to take care of a doxy? They have to have shown up in your house at least once in your lifetime!” I couldn’t for the life of me remember his name though.
The mystery boy leaned in his seat, a slouch taking place. “This lessons obviously for all the muggle borns that have never seen a doxy before in their life! It’s a waste of time for the rest of us,” he is so right!
I nodded and turned to face him, “You’re so bloody right mate! Like, it isn’t our fault they are uncultured! They’ve come into our world and the stupid mudbloods have to be taught everything from picking apart fantasy to explaining the most common of creatures!” I rambled, a genuine smile on my face as I spoke to the lad.
“Hey, I know you right? Or like, I’ve seen you?” he seemed to pause for a little, maybe trying to remember my name.
“It’s okay if—” I was about to sooth and say it didn’t matter if he forgot when he suddenly came up with it.
“Lucian?”
I nodded, “That’s me. Lucian Michael Mornstern,” it was then I had to make the decision. Admit that I had not the foggiest of ideas who he was or brush over the name situation completely. I sighed to myself, what would be the proper and gentleman thing to do?
Be introduced.
“I’m sorry, but what’s your name?” I asked sheepishly, “I don’t actually remember. Is it like Dylan maybe?” it definitely sounded like Dylan… it had to. Oh wow I probably made a huge fool of myself. Oh well. He will tell me his name and all will be okay.
“Back on the subject of the muggle borns, why don’t they just make a weekend class for the clueless pests? Teaching them the things us Pure’s - and maybe some halfies - already know about our world. Just so we aren’t bored to death,” I laughed, trying to be quiet.
He seemed like a cool guy, glad he spoke up because I know that I would have floated through that lesson and then left like I’d never been there, leaving mystery lad to suffer by his lonesome.
Yeah… really got to get his name.

Odi nodded along agreeably to the initial rant. "But like, how can you not know how to take care of a doxy? They have to have shown up in your house at least once in your lifetime!" Lucian said.
"Right? And plus everyone and their grandma has a bottle of doxycide in the cupboard at home." He slumped further in his chair and looked begrudgingly at the open textbook in front of him. He flicked through the pages looking for something of vague interest.
It wasn't until Lucian used the term 'mudblood' that Odi's face registered the briefest moment of surprise, followed by a wicked grin that spread along his face. "Mudbloods? Tut tut." he closed the book imperiously, shaking his head in almost mocking disapproval. "Could get you in a lot of trouble for that you know. I'd only need to raise my hand..." He began to slowly, lift his hand off the desk, his dark eyes drinking Lucian in with his gaze.
After an agonisingly long moment, he merely lifted the hand to his head and ran a hand through his buzzcut blond hair with a musical laugh. "Or maybe I won't." He shrugged. "And it's Odi, Odi Wilde, of the London Wilde's." He didn't bother sticking out his hand to Lucian. Given the boy's purism, Odi felt confident that any pleasantries he exchanged now would be null and void once Lucian worked out that Odi was a half breed.
For now though, he was enjoying the Lucian's bashfulness. He had obviously assumed that Odi, like him, was single-mindedly devoted to upholding pure-blooded wizardry and witchcraft. It didn't surprise him too much in all honesty, many pure-bloods held on staunchly to old-fashioned values - Even Odi's own grandparents - but it was vaguely interesting how quickly Lucian had been willing to divulge his views at just a minor prompt. Odi silently wondered if Lucian was simply that open about his politics or if the Veela magic that surrounded him had let the boy grow too comfortable in sharing his opinion.

I laughed about his doxycide and grandma comment, so true. “Yes! Hahaha!” he flicked through his book again and I took up drawing with my pencil I sort of stole off of Ree once. She did like drawing.
That’s when he went on his rant how it was a waste of time for all of us, I agreed with him, and he seemed to click on the word I used. He closed his book and shook his head, tutting at me. He claimed he could get me into a lot of trouble for saying that! I stared at him, trying to gauge if he was lying or not. “Is that so? Better watch your back if you tattle on me. Never know who will stab you in it,” I shuddered. As much as I hate her, never would have expected her to try and stab me.
I watched him though, I watched as he raised his arm. My eyes narrowed. “I swear on Merlin’s left ball… if you tell on me…” I left the threat empty, truth was, I had no clue what I was going to do. Could always hex him. Float his clothes off of him maybe. Make him get a bad cold?
Oo, I could brew a potion and make him drink it!
But then he dropped his hand and rubbed his head! “Or maybe not…” he laughed and I close my eyes, resting my head on the desk.
“You bloody prat!” I whined, I would have gotten into so much trouble! “I will get you for that! Mark my words!”
“And it’s Odi, Odi Wilde, of the London Wildes,” he introduced. I smiled at him, looking at his hair again. It really was nice. Should I get a buzz cut over the summer? I ran a hand through my own hair and grimaced, nooo. My hair is staying on me head and not on the bleeding ground. I would not suit a buzzcut.
“How long left do we have of this torture?” I groaned, shading in some of the wolf in this picture. “Surely this is such a drag for the professor too? Isn’t he pureblood? Why must he be subjected to yap about bloody doxies for a whole lesson. Poor bloke gotta do this a lot,” I commented, stretching my legs out and cracking my back.
There was something about Odi that made me want to not mess anything up. Anyone else in this class and I would be fine for them to think i’m anything but than normal or cool, but this lad here… I really want to be his friend.
I shook my head slightly, “Really like your hair by the way. Your parents let you get that? Think my grandfather would kill me if I did that! Not sure about my mother, I think she would threaten me with it should I behave inappropriately at school,” flashbacks to when she made me have that ridiculous posh boy (as I class it) hairstyle for Kas’ family ball.
I shuddered. Not pleasant.

“Is that so? Better watch your back if you tattle on me. Never know who will stab you in it,”
Odi's head cocked to the side infinitesimally, as though he were a china doll whose head had slipped just slightly off it's joint. BAM! Odi had darted forwards and slammed his hand on the desk in an attempt to make Lucian jump. Feigning an innocent look to his classmates that were turning their heads to the commotion, he brushed his hands off and spoke in a honeyed tone "Whoops, thought there was a bug on my desk- Hey! Maybe it was a doxy!" He swerved his head back round to Lucian with a power-tripped smirk.
“You bloody prat! I will get you for that! mark my words!”
"I will get you for that!" He repeated in a mocking tone. "Lighten up, I was only teasing, you need to get a sense of humor." He flicked a strand of Lucians hair as the other boy ran his hand through it. He was enjoying pushing the boy's buttons.
Relaxing back into his seat again after the pseudo-assault, the boys continued to half-listen to the lesson.“How long left do we have of this torture?” Lucian groaned, while doodling something “Surely this is such a drag for the professor too? Isn’t he pureblood? Why must he be subjected to yap about bloody doxies for a whole lesson. Poor bloke gotta do this a lot,”
Odi shrugged. "Probably has to do a bunch of these lessons every year. Must be mind-numbing." He slyly peered over Lucians shoulder to see what he was drawing.
He quickly hid his sneak-peak when Lucian turned to ask about his hair. "Eh, I don't much care for it." Odi said honestly. "I just don't like to let it grow long cause people start fawning over it." He rolled his eyes. "You should cut yours too though, I reckon it'd look good. Who gives a toss what your parents think? My mum hates me having my hair short."

He flicked my hair and told me to lighten up. I batted his hands away. “Hey, hey. Don’t touch the merchandise,” I told him, lightly patting my hair. “Just cuz you don’t got any,” then we went back to staring at the board, bored.
I let out a long sigh, asking about how long we have to endure this brain ache, then sympathising with the Professor. I agreed with his statement about it being mind numbing, adding a dark patch to the moon I was drawing.
“You think?” I asked, referring to him saying I should cut it. “Maybe I will over the summer, see how I like it,” it’s alright to say that, but I live with them. I would be the one getting sly comments, that’s even if I could get it done! I sighed. “I guess,” you know what, screw it. I will do what I want to do. I sat up straighter in my seat. “Yeah! Toss my parents! Imma do what I want to do!” I said loudly, feeling a rush. “And I wanna cut my hair!!” I nodded in satisfaction, running a hand through my hair. I still had ages to wait, and who even knew if I still felt the same way when the time came. “Your hair looks wicked! You really suit it. Who gives a toss what your mum thinks, ay?”
“I’m so getting the urge to just… leave, you know? Mondays are bad enough!” I told him, resting my head on my desk. But it wasn’t exactly respectful. There wasn’t much more I could add to my drawing, it was perfect. “What do you think?” I showed him my drawing* after sitting up. “What’s your favourite lesson?” let’s get to know each other!

Odi reeled back in surprise as Lucian swatted his hand away. His grin grew even wider and he withdrew his hand, evidently filing that irritant away for when he really wanted to get on Lucians nerves.
As they tried to entertain themselves with conversations about hairstyles and their mutual frustrations with strict parents, Lucian had started to come round to Odi's more liberal stance on his parents rules Yeah!" He said with increasing confidence and volume "Toss my parents! Imma do what I want to do!" Odi smirked triumphantly at his victory over another authority.
"Plus, that way you won't be able to make fun of me for being practically bald." He added with a double-edged tone.
Continuing their feeble attempts to make the class more stimulating for themselves, their efforts were eventually exhausted, and Lucian couldn't help but talk about how much he wanted to leave. A glint crossed Odi's eye and grew into a determined look. "Hey." He whispered. "Why don't we? Next time the professors back is turned for a bit we could just dip out!" Odi wondered if a well-bred wizard like Lucian would be willing to skip class with him, especially if Lucian found out that his newfound friend was a half-breed. Odi raised his eyebrow expectantly.
It occurred to him that he didn't have a plan as to what they would do instead, but realistically they had a whole castle to explore and failing that, the forbidden forest was just begging for their attendance one of these days. "I'm doing it." He decided in a very final tone of voice. "We've been marked down on the register, so as long as we don't get caught we'll be in the clear." He wasn't exactly trying to convince Lucian to join him at this point, but he wasn't unaware of his own charisma during moments like these.

Isabel had been trying to pay attention in todays Defence against the dark arts class. She was very fond of professor Lécuyer, and made a point of being on time and participating in his classes. Besides, it wasn't like she could afford not paying attention. Getting used to the wizarding world and its strange customs and creatures took effort. This class' subject: Doxies. Now back home, pests were mainly insects or rodents. Nothing like the vaguely human looking creatures that were being discussed.
However, her efforts to listen intently, were disturbed by a Gryffindor and a Slytherin flirting and teasing each other in the row of desks before her. Her determination to ignore them and keep listening to Lécuyer lecture on about using the Knockback Jinx to dispatch them, eventually wore thin. Trying not to roll her light brown eyes, Isabel cleared her throat softly to get the attention of the two boys in front of her.
"Sorry to interrupt you two, but some of us are really trying to pay attention here." Isabel tried to keep her voice and expression as open and harmless as possible, but stopping her irritation from seeping through proved to be difficult. Maybe that came off a bit too harsh, she thought to herself.
But, she hadn't missed the way the boy in the Slytherin robes spoke about muggles and half-bloods like they were below him. Prick. So these were the purists her dormmates had warned her about. the ones that truly believed Hogwarts was a place just for recognised full-blood families and their offspring. Pff! Well she was here and not planning on leaving anytime soon. Trying to come across authoritative she squared her shoulders and raised her chin a bit, just like her sister always did.

I laughed, “Yeah I guess. But at the same time I could make fun of you for being bald because I would totally be better looking than you!” I sniped back, okay maybe that was a liiitle false. He looked great. Merlin, what is wrong with me today?
I mentioned wanting to leave the lesson and I was surprised when Odi agreed with me! Hell yeah I wanna skip! “Mate, he would definitely see us! We aren’t invisible! I’m also not the most agile guy out there,” I said with a self depressing laugh. And I would be killed!
If my mother and father ever found out about this I would lose my head! I mean, how disrespectful of me! Leaving while a Professor is teaching a class, we are basically saying that he isn’t worth our time!
“Uh, I don’t know, Odi. It’s a little disrespectful,” I eventually uttered out, talking myself out of it. Then he said he was doing it! And… and it would be a little more disrespectful if I had left him to - potentially - get in trouble on his home. “Okay… okay. I can get behind this,” I said, sitting more upright in my seat. Just then, I heard someone behind me clearing her throat.
Turning around, I saw a girl in Gryff robes. “Yes?” I inquired, a grin on my face. My back cracked a little as I turned. “Sore throat?” I joked.
“Sorry to interrupt you two, but some of us are really trying to pay attention here,” she said, I scoffed.
“You reaaaally wanna listen to this bore-fest?” I asked with an incredulous look on my face. “What are you, a mudblood?” I asked with a tone of disbelief and a sneer. Uh, how about you leave us alone girl. “They are so boring if you are! Honest. One quick paragraph would settle any questions,” I told her, I was feeling a little energetic today and this kill-joy was not gonna ruin it for me. I watched her square her shoulders and jutter her chin up. I raised my eyebrow. “Calm it darlin’. No need to turn prefect on me,” I laughed. “Stop being a teachers pet, you will possibly get more friends,” that was said with a hint of… maliciousness in my voice and I turned away.

Odi watched Lucian grapple with the thought of getting in trouble with his parents. He said nothing, knowing that he didn't really need to. Finally, he saw the last bouts of resistance die in Lucians eyes. "Okay... Okay. I can get behind this."
"Excellent! We-." Odi was interrupted a soft 'hem hem' noise from behind him. He turned his face an inch to the left to see who had cleared their throat to get his attention.
It was a Gryffindor girl he had seen around the common room a couple of times. Her name was Izzy or Isabel or something. She was a pretty light-skinned girl with thick dark hair that cascaded just past her shoulders. Odi noted a light rosy tint in her cheeks that he felt assured he could turn into an endearing blush. "Well hello gorgeous." He said with a pleasant tone. "What can I do for-"
Once again, Odi found himself being interrupted. "Sorry to interrupt you two, but some of us are really trying to pay attention here." The Gryffindor girl scoffed. He bit back his flare of annoyance at the interjection, knowing that studious types like her were liable to go to the professor when peeved. Before he could even respond however, Lucian's newfound confidence had taken over.
"You really wanna listen to this bore-fest? What are you a mud blood?"
Odi's eyes screwed shut in frustration. Why couldn't he have just stayed silent? He snapped his head round to Lucian and hissed "Shut your mouth you troll!" He could only hope that if the girl was a muggle-born she would likely have never heard the term mudblood before, and so wouldn't know to be offended.
Turning back to Isabel, Odi mouthed a silent 'Sorry about him!' and managed an impish half-smile. He tried to maintain a lingering eye contact with her. He didn't fully understand the way that Veela magic worked yet, but he'd noticed that many of the people he talked to seemed more open to influence with direct eye contact. Perhaps Isabel might not be charmed by his charisma, but he hoped that his secret weapon of his heritage might save him a detention in this situation.
All the while, he kept one eye on their professor, praying that they would not be seen for turning around at their desk to speak to Isabel.
