The short pause sparkled with non-stop action — not all as fruitful as it could be, but still something to applaud for.

Astrea wielded a split Ventus at two opponents at once. Both gusts seemed very powerful, not the split that even Meenauh was able to do, it was different. It would be a nice feat, but both gusts missed. Most probably, Astrea was busy dodging Aida's fire — barely missing by a hair, but at least making sure Astrea could hurt them in return.

Delilah, in her full might and force, the same Delilah that Meenauh duelled that day. A powerful split Confringo (painful) launched at the two Slytherin girls. Astrea managed to evade the spell's full blow, but a few splinters hit her painfully in the thigh. Bridget, probably anticipating what was coming, managed to gracefully incant one of the most difficult spells — Oculitumescere and laid it on her opponent, blocking her vision for a while. But the anticipation like a fiery tsunami covered her with a full-fledged heat, throwing her away and leaving a few burns for sure. If only their duel was a game with health points or something, Bridget would feel as it she lost no less than a quarter.

“UGGHH! What is WRONG with me?!”

Aida couldn’t believe it – was this the wix’s third miss? The pretty snake didn’t even seem that hard to hit compared to some, what was even going on?

“I’m so sorry, I’m really trying. I can’t understand why I can’t seem to hit today. You’re doing great, though, Delilah. What should I do, nrghhhh….”

Aida slapped the old CoMC wand against one leg as if trying to wake it up a bit.

“Come on, we’ve got this.”

"Hey hey hey, you don't need to be so hard on yourself, it happens, it's okay." She said to Aida, mostly to reassure them, but also hopefully so they didn't snap their wand with the gusto that they were walloping it. "I know you're trying, you're doing great." She smiled to Aida, although within seconds of that sentence, she got hit in the face with some fun conjunctivitis.

This definitely had to be one of Delilahs least favourite spells to be hit with, as her eyes swelled up and itched and burned.

Unlike the many other legal spells within any good duellist's handbook, Confringo was a unique case in which even theoretical complete misses and (in this case) skilful dodges could not escape from its wrath. It was one of particular brutality not quite peculiar upon the duelling field if not for its sheer devastation, rending flesh and stone alike. To be targeted in such a way, with nary a word of further acknowledgement from their chatty opponents...

It was salt in the wound, venom on the tongue, insult to injury for ignorance's sake.

Even with pain lancing up her leg and radiating along Astrea's sternum, there was but pity and deep gratefulness that she was not to experience the same explosion of magic that her partner did. If this was what Confringo did to a victim, what would its fallout be in the inevitable situation of magic's fickleness? In this sense, Astrea hoped to never find out first-hand, the electric buzz of talent seeming to momentarily sting in agreement.

Bridget had not been blown up before. She'd been cursed, and set on fire, and choked on toxic gas, probably some other things. A bunch of really fun kid-friendly stuff basically, but not blown up. Her report? Terrible, 0/10 would not recommend. Or maybe 1/10, only because being cursed was still worse. 2/10 because she was in less danger of dying.

Anyway she was— staggering back to her feet. If Bridget was a more talkative person, she might have said at least one choice word, because that would about sum it up. But instead she was gritting her teeth and getting back into stance; the worst thing would be getting caught staggering by another spell. At least she'd hit Delilah? Not a pretty spell, it looked uncomfortable and had an incantation you could choke on, but at least it wasn't getting exploded.

Aida kept conjuring the fire to hit Astrea, but so far the aiming kept failing for the reasons beyond understanding. Whether it was some tension building up, or Astrea was just a slithery Slytherin.

Astrea in her turn decided to go for Aida this time (it seemed) and threw Ventus at a different direction with no proper application. The spell went astray.

Delilah used the moment when she wasn't targeted and healed a few bruises on her and removed the nasty effect that impaired her vision, which was done at the very right moment — something build-up for future offence, probably.

Delilah didn't know that it was Bridget, who would cast quite an advanced spell at her. At her who? Yes, at her self. The spell intended to cause someone's head to get dizzy, and sometimes the affected person forgot a few of the spells they were recently using. A concussion of sorts. It went terribly wrong and backfired, meaning a short memory loss would be Bridget's pain for quite a while.

What had gotten into Aida this match? Really, it was just getting too amped up and worrying. What the white wix really needed was to leave behind the hypertension and find that elusive flow state once more…

They were back to a somewhat clean slate, Delilah got rid of that nasty conjunctivitis, Bridget managed to backfire her own spell, which looked uncomfortable but Del couldn't say it didn't help the ravenclaw cause. And the other two spells missed.

Bridget was doing fine, she hadn’t just been hit by a spell and Astrea was still by her side. Things hurt though, her skin felt roasted and wrong, and all the noise was too loud, too much, and she was sure her duelling stance usually felt more solid than this.

She couldn’t remember what she’d just cast. Or had she even cast? Surely she had, right? Standing there uselessly was not a thing Bridget did, not on the duelling platform. But she didn’t know, her head was full of the fog Galton liked to wreath his duels in, except for not that fog literally because that probably wasn’t supposed to lurk amongst her brain matter. She didn’t know, and Bridget? She was kind of freaked out by that. More than kind of. The duelling stage was somewhere she had control and could leverage observation and strategy and quick-thinking and—

And she felt like she’d been steamrollered, and she was spilling out, neat threads unraveling at the edges. She was in the middle of a duel, she knew that, but why wasn’t she on top of the situation? What was happening? Her sweaty hand wrapped tighter around her wand, and in a voice she made reasonably steady, she asked her partner, “How are we doing?” An innocuous enough check-in, but she literally just didn’t know.

For all of the Vipers' evasive prowess, this round was not well-representative of an experienced dueller's trained accuracy. Known spectators - for which there surely were none, perhaps as a side-effect of Astrea's antisocial nature resulting in a complete crowd of strangers at every turn - would feel only disappointment at the wasteful bout of actions. Even so, this stalemate was an essential part of every duel, a constant push and pull of power.
