Samantha rolled her eyes when she heard Jake's comment about lightning. Why did he ever become a duelist? Shaking her head in disbelief, she turned her attention back to the game. Even though the two badgers seemed to have had some kind of disagreement, they turned to help the other. Jake cast the general counter-spell at his partner, canceling the effect of the spell she was suffering under. The cheering charm left Autumn's wand as she aimed it at Jake. The Hufflepuff boy would suddenly feel a lot more confident and Samantha wondered if Autumn had cast the spell on the boy to make him less nervous.

Another duelist that didn't pay any attention to the other team was Piérre. The lion was struggling to break free, quite unsuccessfully. Regina seemed to be out for blood as she aimed for Autumn. The familiar incantation of the fire-making spell left her mouth and soon after a flame would appear on Autumn's sleeve. Only when all the spells had been cast would Piérre feel the spell that took his ability to move fade.

A brilliant flame spell came from Fiorescura, but it was the small maneuvers on the part of the opposing team that interested the Jester more. On one hand, the proctor of his previous duel must have felt that the Impediment Jinx that the boy had cast on his counterpart teammate was so irritating that he had to counterspell it. It was amusing, though, as Piérre finally felt his fingertips move from beneath the body-wide 'weighted blanket', as the spell seemed to almost fail entirely. Yet, the impressive magic that the boy had procured had been enough to delay, and instead of letting them go on the offensive, the girl that he had temporarily crippled instead resorted to casting a buffing spell upon Jake.

Was this good; well.... eh. Sure, it wasn't ideal, but as Piérre shakily got to his feet, recollected his wand with a small twirl of it between his fingers, and then rubbed his (now fuzzy) head, he tried his best to ignore the disorienting feeling of the world spinning about him and the sudden and unprecedented need to throw up in favor of trying to do the thing he had to do in order to stand a better chance at both winning this duel and to try his best not to get as absolutely wrecked as he had in his first season duel. They had just gotten out of the gates; he had no intention of laying down and 'dying' quietly.

One thing at a time, as always. Regain your breath, recall the incantation, reformulate the idea, reconstruct a plan, reintroduce a threat.

Stop the Show. Actually... no. I'll do one better.

I'll be the Showstopper; let me take the credit.

In the middle of a duel, there wasn't a lot that could make Jake think about anything else but nervousness about spells being thrown in his direction, or sometimes spells going to his opponents.

So it really was impressive that Autumn was able to stop the boy in his tracks.

Wha...Had she just said hurting them was her intention? The Hufflepuff took his eye off the game, and stared at her. "Th-that..." he shook his head for a minute, stunned into silence.

Sure he knew that they were all dueling, and that you wanted to beat your opponent, and sometimes that meant doing things like using fire (Well, Jake wouldn't, but a LOT of people did...) or other unpleasant things, and yeah sometimes people were gonna get hurt. But that wasn't the POINT of it all...was it? That was just....well that was just what sometimes happened playing the game, but wasn't it better if it didn't? Nobody had ever said to him that they WANTED to hurt their opponents. That that was the whole point.

"Yeah, but... why would I... I mean, I just... I just wanna win. Not hurt them..." he said uncomfortably, looking at Piérre who HAD seemed to fall pretty hard. Luckily the other boy was getting up. He must have been ok, right? "Wh-why would I want to do that?"

Wasn't wanting to win enough? It was really the first time Jake had tried that, since mostly when he played games he was ok to just have a good time. Dueling was the first time he cared who won and lost, mostly because he didn't want to be the one knocked out on the platform and because as a Hufflepuff captain, he had to do everything he could for his team. And maybe a little bit because he wanted to prove he could. That little spark of competitiveness that dueling had brought out of him was something that Jack and George had failed to cultivate in him for over three years. But maybe Autumn was right. If this was how it was, SHOULD he have signed up...?

"Finite incantatem!" he cast, as he saw the spell had hit Autumn. Healing spells, support spells, those came much more naturally to Jake. But when her wand turned to him he jumped slightly until he heard her cast the cheering charm.

Did Jake feel different? Probably not. After all, how could he feel happy when he was in the middle of a duel, spells flying and all that? Or maybe that's why he SHOULD feel happy...? How scared had he been to do this, and here he was, standing up here with everybody else? Wasn't this the second time he'd gotten the first shot in a duel? He had done two perfect body-bind curses in two duels. Curses were his WORST kind of magic. And he had done that. And he hadn't even been hit yet (at least not by his opponents). So what was he so scared of?

"Oh, I really don't think that's going to work on me," he said with a head shake, not really noticing the way he stood taller and that his hands had stopped shaking as he gripped his wand.

For the moment, he forgot about the ominous storm cloud that floated above his opponents' heads.

Regina scoffed at @Jake Morris's whining. How was it possible that a duelling Captain was adamant against the basic concept of duelling? It truly went to say how weak-minded Hufflepuffs really were, and there was nothing she disrespected more than a person's cowardice in the battlefield.

Purple eyes darted to Morris' partner, and the silent acknowledgement of a presence just as chilling as hers. At least that girl wasn't a weaseling Badger. Which just made the hunt all the more interesting.

Just as Marchonné finally regained his footing beside her, Regina unleashed her favoured, most powerful spell. The Incendio Duo flew beautifully and deadly towards @Autumn Ivy, engulfing her in flames before catching on the sleeve of her robe.

The smile on Regina's face was almost feral.

"Now you truly are a Blazing Badger," She taunted, eyes glinting with the malice always present when she watched someone burn from her magic. She was on the prowl.

While one of the duelists didn't want to hurt the other players, another didn't seem to mind setting the other students on fire. Even after successfully casting a fire-making spell the first time, Regina tried again the next round. However, something went wrong. Had Regina messed up the incantation or wand movement? Jake would probably be glad that there was no extra fire in the duel. However, Samantha didn't think the Hufflepuff boy would be too happy when he noticed the storm cloud moving toward him. While Regina had tried to cast an incendio duo, her partner had aimed his wand at the storm cloud above their head. With a quick ventus, Piérre moved the cloud across the stage.

Little did Jake know what was going to happen once the cloud reached him. For now, the badger was focused on casting the Wind Jinx. The jolt of wind that was aimed towards Piérre split in two and targeted both the lions. Regina was quick on her feet and easily dodge the spell, while Piérre was just a little too late. The ventus had just hit him, making the spell weaker than normal. Jake hadn't liked the idea of the storm cloud, and the boy became its first victim. Even if he had noticed the bolt of lightning coming down, it was impossible to dodge. Samantha watched in horror as the lightning hit the poor student.

Riding high on the adrenaline, Regina didn't wait before the incantation for another Fire-Making Spell fell from her lips to continue her assault. However, her head snapped towards the screeching Wind Jinx heading her way and instincts kicked in as she pirouetted gracefully away from the danger - consequently failing to perform the correct wand movement needed to cast Incendio Duo at Autumn Ivy.

"A little bit more and you could have dodged that one, Marchonné. Pity," She scoffed condescendingly at her partner, annoyed at her attack being foiled. Though, she would commend his quick thinking to give the Hufflepuffs their cloud back. Regina watched with immense satisfaction as Morris suffered the full brunt of lightning.

Autumn threw a glance and a scoff in her teammate's direction, but kept her eyes on her opponents. "Think logically, Morris. If they get hurt enough, they find themselves in the hospital wing, and we find ourselves winning the duel. In what world is that not the ideal result? Besides, it's not as if they're trying not to hurt us. We may as well return the favour."

Despite her words, Autumn's wasn't planning to hit the Gryffindors that round. It didn't take too many skills in observation to realise Jake wasn't hitting as hard as she was. Still, his hits were more precise than hers, which she was obviously not envious of, because that would be wildly childish. So, the easy solution was a simple charm his way, to help him out. She still wasn't exactly a fan, but strategy didn't listen to personal opinion or emotion, an attitude her fellow Hufflepuff clearly didn't understand.

At first, she was about to thank Jake for getting rid of the Impediment Jinx before the effects worsened, until he said that he didn't think it would work, and suddenly she was angry again.

"Are you insulting my casting, Mo-"

Autumn was on fire. That was a thing that was happening. Fun! It was a pretty fire, she had to give it that, and Regina was a strong caster, which Autumn naturally had a lot of respect for, but neither of those things diminished the fact that she was on fire. The smell of smoke burned her nostrils, and even her particular love of fire couldn't stop some panic from arising. It was a duel, this was normal, and Incendio Duo was a favourite spell of hers as well, but apparently she enjoyed it slightly more
when she wasn't on the receiving end.

It was fine. She was fine.

Except she wasn't, because the distraction was enough to light up (pun never, ever intended) a greater fear in her. What was she doing here? She was on fire, and her teammate was some kind of pacifist, and Regina was more scary than she'd like to admit, and she kept losing so how would this duel even be any different?

And with that, spells went flying and Autumn came to the realisation she was the only one not doing anything. Damn it, damn her, damn everything. Jake had successfully cast Ventus on Pierre. That was good. Jake had been hit by lightning. That was bad. Was the storm cloud on their side now? That was very bad. Pierre was free. Also bad. Regina tried to set her on more fire, but failed. That was good. The magic fire she had already cursed Autumn with was fading. That was very good. Autumn felt a slight release from her panic. She could redeem this. That was... possible. "Possible" would have to do.

Shaking off the last vestiges of petrification, the boy twirled his wand and pointed it upwards with a confident incantation of "Ventus!"

With ease, the spell left him and swirled about the clouds, pushing them backwards towards the enemy with little difficulty. While moving the clouds, Piérre was aware of a spell that was flying his direction. The timing was a bit too far off for him though, and with a perfect angle on behalf of Jake, Piérre felt the spell barely clip his side, causing a gust of wind to manifest about him and whip his bangs before his eyes in a way that made his eyes water and distracted him ever so slightly if he needed to have the ability to further evade. However, a streak of blue lightning dashed down on Jake, causing the Britalian to flinch only for a moment in empathically shared pain before he refocused on his own plights.

In reality, the force of the clipping blow wasn't as bad as it could have been; he owed it to his natural dexterity, as he observed Regina easily sidestep the split that had come from it as well. Yet even for his admirable display of agility, it evidently wasn't enough to evade a trashtalking comment from Fiorescura. The boy couldn't help but snicker a bit.

"Hey, I'd-a like to see you avoid a crackshot like that, Fiorescura! I think-a you got the better half of the bargain!" He trilled as the fire spell she had attempted to conjure only flickered out with a bit of a sorry cough. "Aw bugger, too much air; blew the spell right out..." He reflected with a bit of a hum. "And hey, you don't have to call me by my last name; too formal. We're good buddies now, eh? Piérre'll suit just fine. Or... what was it you called me that one time we first met? Pew-uri-el?" Emerald eyes glittered with puckish amusement.

"I think I can still see some glitter in your hair..." He teased lightly. "It's really striking against the natural black, very pretty." He nodded towards the other team. "Almost as pretty as the win we'll get, right?"

Confidence, calm; that energizing sparkle of energy that came from the boy would continue to conflict and ward off the bad vibes that came from the opposing Hufflepuff on behalf of Regina. Adrenaline perhaps, or perhaps simple good nature... Had Regina ever run across such a strange enigma as Piérre? A kid who at least pretended that he wasn't frightened of her, her words, her actions or her threats?

Wand tracing in a twinkling, Piérre readied up his next spell, recalling the incantation and readying himself for a brand new cast.

"Well...well we can win WITHOUT them going to the hospital wing..." he mumbled. Wasn't that the MOST ideal?

But she was right about one thing. The other team WAS trying to hurt them...Especially one of them....Jake eyed Regina nervously. He didn't know but just from looking at her face he had a feeling she might agree a lot with what Autumn was saying. It was probably a good thing Regina and Autumn wasn't the team.

But before they could continue their discussion Jake stared wide-eyed at Autumn as the fire lit on her robes, changing everything. He knew from his time watching over duels that sometimes incendio duo caught on and sometimes it faded quickly. If it caught on, it would burn. He hesitated as he held his wand. He could put the fire out for his team-mate, but if the fire went out on its own and he hit her with an extinguishing charm then he wouldn't have really been helping with anything. Then she'd just be wet. He wasn't sure if she'd want him to put the fire out and he didn't want to get it wrong (cause to be honest, he was a little scared of her). Luckily it really didn't last long and before long he saw it fading. The boy gave a sigh of relief. Regina on the other side had called Autumn a blazing badger. Maybe they really needed a new team name...

Jake threw out a wind jinx at Piérre (it was his favorite spell since it really didn't hurt much, and he was much better at casting it than some of the others) and watched as the gusts rocketed towards BOTH of his opponents. He hadn't even MEANT to do that! Maybe it was because he had felt more confident. Autumn's cheering charm had taken root, whether Jake knew it or not. It was hard to believe that magic could make your feelings change like that. Whenever a cheering charm hit Jake he didn't FEEL like he was magically happy, and he didn't really notice until later that it had even worked.

It was like that now, but it was with a new brightness in his voice that Jake said "Hey, I hit him! Well kinda,". It had been more like grazing him but that meant they were doing pretty good!

Unfortunately, Jake hadn't been paying as much attention to what Piérre had done (he only knew that he had DEFINITELY missed them), and while his eyes had kept making nervous glances at the storm cloud before, now with a new surge of confidence he didn't look up. If he had he might have noticed the cloud blowing towards him. If he had he might have tried to blow it back.

But then there was a sudden crack, and Jake's smile was gone in an instant, as he felt a much more painful surge.

Shooting, blaring, pain rocketed through Jake's body as the lightning struck, magical electricity coursing through him and leaving him breathless. It was over as fast as it began, leaving his ears ringing, and his muscles throbbing.

"Owwww...." the boy groaned, his breaths heavy as his body threatened to collapse.

He blinked, in a daze. By some miracle he had held onto his wand. But it hurt...everything did. His legs wobbled but somehow held him.

"H-hey...!" he said weakly, his words breaking in his throat, sounding on the verge of tears. "I-I'm okay. That wasn't so bad...!" He even managed a weak but pained smile.

Yes, luckily for the badger team, the cheering charm was still coursing through him as much as the electricity was, overcoming all of his natural instincts. Jake sniffled, but stayed on his feet. Though there were tears in his eyes he stayed in the fight, looking forward with a rare determination. He had been struck by lightning and he was still standing. Didn't that mean he could do anything...? But ow it hurt...but they could win! But owwww....

Lightning

Jake: [d20: 18] → No Hit
Autumn: [d20: 4] → No Hit
The Hufflepuffs aimed their wand at the same adversary, Piérre. Jake's perilous flipendo made its way to Piérre. If the Gryffindor boy hadn't been affected by the wind, he would have been able to dodge it. The Wind Jinx diminished his ability to dodge and the boy got hit. At least Jake's spell had hit, the same couldn't be said about his partner's. Maybe Autumn had looked just a bit too long at Regina as an uneasy feeling crept upon the girl. Whatever it was, it caused Autumn to miss.

It seemed like Regina wanted a do-over for the spell she failed last round. Another incendio duo flew towards the badgers and hit Autumn again. The fire caused Autumn's health to aggravate. From what Samantha could see, the fourth year was the most injured in the group. While Regina targeted one of the opponents, Piérre focused on both. From his wand appeared a thick fog cloud that would impede their view, making it harder for the duelists to aim and dodge.

The storm cloud above the badgers' heads rumbled loudly but luckily, nobody was hit by an appalling lightning bold this round.
