Lions and Tigers and... Unicorns?
Errand information may be found here. This is the thread focusing on Augureys.
ReducioThe Augurey is considered to be the 'Irish Phoenix'. They resemble a malnourished vulture, some say, and live in teardrop shaped nests of bramble. The Augurey eats fairies, flies, and insects. The feathers of Augureys repel ink and are useless for quills, and their cries are said to foretell rainfall.

After the necessary cleanup of the unicorn portion of the errand, Sabine had set up a few bird perches, some wooden bird boxes, and plenty of feathers and straw for the Augureys to rest on. Students who visited these awfully sad birds would find themselves in a bit of a dismal environment. Their professor stood proudly to the left of the birds, leaning against the stone stables, a stark contrast to the dreary feathered friends in her bright fuchsia waist coat. It was in character for the professor, really—it was really quite rare to catch sight of her in anything other than color (that suited her undertone, of course) or some sort of fashion-forward frock. "Hello students! Welcome to the portion of today's errand centered around the magnificent Augurey. Please be aware that these creatures are very shy and don't quite like loud noises and big disruptions, so be wary of their comfort and kind to them. You may pet their heads--I've found they quite like that--or, if you feel so inclined, read them some books. Mister Sáez has generously provided some books for you all to choose from. I've discovered that our Augureys are far more inclined to trust you if you give them a little food for thought, so to speak."February 12, 2023. 1:30 to 2:30 PM.

Emma had been torn. While she thought unicorns would be beautiful creatures, she also thought they would be quite popular. She had been feeling slightly down and not very like being around large groups with the dark winter weather. It had taken quite a while for her to finally make up her mind that she wouldn’t regret meeting a unicorn if only because hopefully she would have another opportunity and it would be likely to be super crowded and louder than the other groups.
It was the fact that the Augerey was known to be found in Ireland, her home and the fact that they looked slightly down, but also comical in a way that clinched it for Emma. Though admittedly it was truly a matter of judging a book by it’s cover, Emma didn’t feel guilty about choosing the bird, only a slight regret that she might have enjoyed the unicorns more.
Dressing warmly, Emma made sure her light blue jacket was tightly zipped, her hair carefully tucked into her hat, and her scarf loosely wrapped around her neck. She had a thing about her neck, not liking anything too tight around it, even turtlenecks could bother her if they weren’t loose enough. Grabbing her mitts off her bed, she shoved her jacket sleeve back far enough to see that she had 20 minutes before her time slot. Shrugging, she decided she could leisurely meander towards the stone stables where she knew the professor had set up.
Wondering through the castle soon turned into a bit more of a rush as she felt she was going too slowly and would arrive late. Emma did not do late, it was not in her nature. In the end, Emma showed up five minutes before the appointed time, shifting from foot to foot as she waited for exactly 1:30, not wanting to be early but also not willing to be late. Biting her lip, she moved towards where Professor Blumenthal stood, regarding the sad-looking, but still somehow fluffy birds. She didn’t know that feathers could look fluffy, but that’s what seemed to be happening. Listening carefully, she grinned, thinking that they truly seemed much like her right now, and further not even feeling one iota of regret anymore over choosing the augerey’s over the unicorns. After all, she might not be as shy as the birds but she certainly was shyer than many of her classmates, and at times she could be overwhelmed with loud noises or multiple different music or music and conversations going on. Not to mention her previously discussed down mood with the rather sad weather lately.
Looking nervously around, she inched forward towards the bird on the far right, not aiming to go farther from the professor but just not wanting to feel crowded or like she needed to be on to impress her. But maybe that was just her own brain getting in her way. Shrugging her shoulders, she figured she was already here and looked curiously at the sad looking bird, trying to decide how best to approach. Professor Blumenthal had said they liked their heads petted but that still seemed a bit intimidating. Maybe reading a book was a good idea to warm up the bird and Emma to each other.
Quietly, she said, “I’ll be right back, I’m just going to grab a book.” Moving towards the professor, she looked over them carefully. Clearing her throat slightly, she asked without looking at Professor Blumenthal. “Have you found the augerey’s like certain types of books over others? Or specifically the one on the end there?” She pointed towards the bird who she was hoping to work up the nerve to pet. Surveying the options, she tried to pick a few favourites of her own from the group, though admittedly she couldn’t say she recognized anything in particular. Though if the professor pointed to one of the others she would go with whatever was recommended. After all, she could read whatever but if it made the bird less intimating or more friendly, she’d read whatever they liked to them. She wanted to be able to pet the augerey at least once.

Lions and Tigers and... Unicorns?

The majority of the time over the months, Adya hung out in the library. Particularly as a result of her unfaded interest in a subject. The subject which is nowhere related to her first year syllabus. The care of magical creatures got her captivated even before her formal introduction to the subject. Where the title alone was enough to shoot up her enthusiasm to hunt down information regarding it. Even before Hogwarts opened its gate for her, animals in general were dear to her. In all honesty, the fact that she had to wait for two more years to study about the magical creatures was a bit of a disappointment. The impatience in her stretched the time longer than it was. Which boosted her curiosity and now she's on an unending journey of acquiring knowledge about magical creatures as much as possible.
During this period, knowledge was acquired through a reference from books. The books were of benefit to a great extent. Adya would never deny it. At the same time, she would prefer experience over books. In all her honesty, experience gained from coming across something is way better than knowledge acquired through books. If a person couldn't get to practice something they learnt, why do they need to study in the first place? Anyway, her logic is not applicable in various areas. Thank the stars! There came an errand that got her awestruck upon hearing about it. In the immediate present, Adya was provided with an opportunity to get an eyeful of a magical creature. If she's at advantage, there's a possibility for her to feed or at least touch them.
Adya's first vote was to visit the Jackalopes. The cute little creatures. With them, Adya was utterly sure to be full of smiles. There was no doubt about it even without attending the session! And there were the unicorns! The irresistible creatures. As a matter of fact, Adya didn't know she controlled her urge to visit the creatures. She could have taken some pictures of those creatures to show off to her sisters, especially could have bothered the youngest one. Although that wasn't her priority now. There was something about the Augureys that rose her curiosity. Do they really have the capability to affect their surrounding ambience? Would it affect her demeanour? Adya wants to feel the sensation. From various sources she heard from, the young girl came to know that they tend to sadden their surroundings. Voluntarily or involuntarily, that she wasn't aware of. Is it all exact and accurate?
Adya put on her mustard button down shirt which was a bit wrinkled near the collar and Jean shorts, she fitted her feet into the black sneakers which were blotched with dirt over them. The unsighted knots in her hair made a wild impression on it. Slipping in on the belt that secured her wizarding camera around her neck, Adya left her dorm. Adya listened to Professor Blumenthal's instruction intendedly, not wanting to mess up things which probably result in getting hurt. Taking a long breath, Adya walked towards the bird's perch. They really do have something to do with their surrounding! Nevertheless Adya's eyes dazzled when it was treated with the sight in front of her.
From a few feet away "Hi" she smiled as her eyes gazed at them. They were a bunch but somewhat lonelier. Among them, one in the corner looked more alone and somehow it had a magnetic effect on her. Her steps grew closer to that one. It won't reciprocate her smile but that didn't stop her from directing hers towards the creature. Her arm lifted up somewhat hesitantly as it reached towards the Augurey. Adya looked intently for some sign of disapproval to know if she should halt there. But there was none. The young girl placed her palm on its head to gently stroke. Her palm was tickled with the sensation. Maintaining her voice soft and low "I can read a book to you, only if you want it though, you can say no or just shake your head to show your disapproval-" Adya chuckled at her own behaviour. She didn't expect a reply to it but she couldn't shut her mouth either. With a hope she didn't provoke them, Adya grabbed for a book and placed a chair quite a distance from the Augurey and read it out to them. After sometime, she placed the book closed on her lap and propped her elbow on to support her chin with her palm and gazed at them engrossed by their little movements in the silence. For a time being she really was able to keep her lips shut. When it was time, she pushed herself off the chair and reached to give another stroke, "I hope we'll meet again sometime" and clicked few pictures of them before leaving the place.

| ─── | It was Sunday, February 12th, 2023.
By this point in time, it was easy for Kim to wake up early for his classes during the weekdays. But the weekend was entirely different because there was no need to get up early, so Kim tended to sleep in and let his tired body rest for awhile. Unfortunately, his insomnia had returned, most likely due from the huge amounts of stress, anxiety and building anger rising up inside him. But he continued to keep these feelings inside, not sharing them with anyone. Because if anyone noticed or he actually told them how he was currently feeling, they would want to know the reason. And he couldn't tell them the reason at any costs. What he needed was a distraction. A true distraction. Something out of the ordinary that he could focus on and try to use to distract himself from how he was really feeling right now. Because it felt as if he was going to explode or go insane. Neither of which was something that should happen. Kim took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to calm himself down. Today he'd heard about a special errand that was taking place. One that Bailey and Shiro hadn't signed him up for instantly for once. Its subject matter was perfect for him. He'd always loved creatures. Creatures, reptiles, animals, anything other than cats, he would go out of his way to interact with. Kim was currently wearing a sleeveless black shirt and slacks, along with a black leather-and-silk jacket over the outfit. On the front left part of the jacket, two gold letters could be seen, one was bigger and one was smaller. The large gold letter was of an H, which was etched into the jacket, while the smaller gold letter was a G that was elaborately placed on top of the H. The H represented Hogwarts and the G represented Gryffindor. A thin gold necklace with a butterfly could be seen around his neck to complete the teen's look.... Around his left wrist was a pearl bracelet and around his right wrist was his diamond pride bracelet. A pair of simple black earrings graced his earlobes. Kim pulled his hair back into a ponytail and then grabbed his satchel with was filled with basic items, a bunch of chocolate frog boxes, a quill, inkwell, some loose parchment paper, a jar of flies and insects he'd collected earlier that morning in preparation for the errand, an allergy potion, his sketchbook, photography notebook, wizard camera, and a couple other random things. He debated over taking Puffie... But eventually decided against it. After all, he didn't want the puffball to get excited and bounce around. What if one of the creatures ended up trying to eat him? Kim thought he'd get traumatized if he ended up seeing an augurey eat his beloved pink pet. Sure he could have decided to see the unicorns or jackalopes instead and bring Puffie but Kim really wanted to see the augureys. They were sad, shy and lonely creatures. Kim identified with them right now. As he approached the stone stables, he saw various bird perches and boxes set up for the creatures. Lots of feathers and straw could be seen scattered everywhere inside the area. Upon seeing the large bird-like creatures, a faint smile came to Kim's lips. They really were beautiful creatures. Kim glanced over at the new professor for Care of Magical Creatures, who had set up the errand in the first place. Sabine Blumenthal was someone he'd gotten a good impression of from the very start of the new year. He'd met her, Nancy McLoughlin and Caradoc Browne back on January 8th for the first time. She'd had a great sense of humor. If they'd met before the fall ball, things might have turned out differently. Kim would probably have had a lot of fun with her outside of classes. But as it was, this was not really a great time for him. Kim couldn't focus or concentrate as well as before. If someone happened to notice these things, Kim would merely brush it off as not having gotten a good night's sleep. Or say his mind was elsewhere as he was really busy with all the clubs he ran and co-ran. There were lots of excuses he could make up that would effectively deflect any further questions. Pausing for a moment upon entering the area, Kim took out his wizard camera and snapped a picture of the augureys from a distance. He didn't want to startle them by doing it up close. But at the same time he wanted the pictures.... The white haired teen got various shots of them from different angles and then nodded, satisfied. Placing the wizard camera back into his satchel, he shifted the strap over his shoulder and headed over towards where Sabine and the creatures were. As he arrived, the professor started to describe in detail what to expect and do and Kim nodded. The best part about deciding upon these creatures was that they didn't appear to be as popular as the other two. Which in turn meant less people. Kim was glad for this respite. He could be silent... And not have to worry about anyone. Not have to worry that someone would wonder why he was being so quiet and ask if something was wrong. Kim came over and picked up one of the pro-offered books, not really caring what it was, and let his blue eyes flicker over the birds. He chose the one furthest away from the entrance and went over to stand in front of him. It was unusual for him to have to look up at anyone. But then, this was a creature and not a person. Kim always tended to get along well with creatures, or pretty much anything that wasn't a humanoid. "Yo." He said, giving his trademark greeting. It was something he instinctively said to everyone upon seeing them. He raised a hand up into the air and made eye contact with the augurey he'd selected to be his focus. The huge bird-like creature gazed down at him but said and did nothing in response. However, its large eyes remained focused on him and Kim took it as a sign that he had its attention. Therefore, he reached into his satchel and brought out the jar of flies and insects. Letting the satchel rest on the ground, Kim unscrewed the top, grabbed a fly and then set the container down onto the ground. "Want a snack?" Kim asked him. He raised his hand with the fly in it up to the augurey. The bird-like creature's eyes seemed to sparkle and widen a little and it brought its head down quickly. As it took the fly from between his fingers and munched on it, Kim reached up to pet its large head. "You're a beautiful creature. You know that?" He murmured to it and continued to pet its head until it lifted it again to gaze at him. "Want me to read you some books? I'll give you another snack later." Kim told it and gave it a faint smile. He picked up the jar, returned it into his satchel and then placed it nearby him. Kim took a seat beside the augurey, not scared at all over its size and how easy it would be to crush him. Making himself comfortable, Kim opened the book and started to quietly read to it. The augurey paid close attention and as he started to read, crouched down and swiveled its head in his direction. It seemed as if the creature felt drawn to Kim and was beginning to feel comfortable around him. As for Kim, he was content to just stay around his chosen augurey and read for awhile and let his mind drift off to other places. Being around a beautiful creature like this and reading to it wasn't something he got to do every day. It was nice..... |

Erin made her way just outside of the stables where she heard that Care of Magical Creatures was held. Being a first-year, Erin couldn't participate in the actual class yet, but it was once that fascinated her the most. Erin had always enjoyed the company of animals, from watching the small rabbits hop around in her Grandmother's garden to reading about the majestic hippogriffs that soared the skies. Making her way closer to the area, Erin heard Professor Blumenthal's voice. "Hello students! Welcome to the portion of today's errand centered around the magnificent Augurey." As Erin walked up to the small circle of students that had formed, she couldn't help but stare at the creature before her.
The creature—bird, really—looked sad. But Erin thought, despite the bird's saddened expression, that it was beautiful nonetheless. The bird had striking, large, blue eyes that almost looked like ice. The wings were a deep, green-black color that looked puffed out and silken almost. From what Erin had gathered in her research before the encounter, she knew that the Augurey's feathers did not make good quill feathers as they were known to repel ink "How fascinating," Erin thought to herself as she stared at the regal bird. "I really am curious on how the feathers are able to repel ink," even though Erin knew that the bird was a magical creature, she couldn't help but still wonder how the science of it worked. "You may pet their heads--I've found they quite like that--or, if you feel so inclined, read them some books. . . I've discovered that our Augureys are far more inclined to trust you if you give them a little food for thought, so to speak." Erin raised her head to watch Professor Blumenthal as she continued with her presentation.
"Books," thought Erin, "well that's perfect! I do enjoy reading!" Erin walked over to the pile of books that had been laid out by Mister Sáez and chose a few that seemed interesting before making her way toward one of the birds sitting inside a teardrop-shaped nest. "Hello, birdy," Erin said calmly and walked up slowly to the bird, sitting on the ground a little ways from it. "Is it ok if we read some books together, Mr. Augurey?" Erin asked calmly, looking at the bird. It didn't seem irritated so far, so Erin took a breath and continued, opening one of the books she had grabbed slowly and began to read to the Augurey.
As Erin read, she looked at the bird occasionally to make sure the bird was still comfortable perched in their teardrop nest. Erin also made conversation with the bird throughout her reading. While Erin knew the Augurey couldn't really respond, she felt as though the Augurey understood what she was saying nonetheless. "Food for thought is what Professor Blumenthal said after all? Right?" Erin thought to herself. Time seemed to fly as Erin read and attempted to make insightful conversation with the bird, dissecting and pondering on various parts of the book out loud as she read. Although the bird was silent, Erin felt a connection to the bird, and after a while felt comfortable enough to scoot ever-so-slightly closer to him. As Erin finished one book, she looked towards the Augurey. "Well that was an insightful read, don't you think, Mr. Augurey?" Erin looked down at her next book. "I don't think I'll have time for this one unfortunately," Erin admitted quietly to the bird. "Might I pet you a little instead before you have to leave?" Erin took a deep breath after asking this to the bird. It's not that she was scared of the Augurey per se, just that she knew that it was a magical creature after all, and didn't want to do anything that would scare him off or break the slight bond she felt with the bird. "I'll be gentle I promise," Erin muttered to the bird. "Professor Blumenthal said you like head pets," Erin continued as she slowly raised her hand to pet the top of the Augurey's head.

Outfit: 2Post layout and graphics by Larino ArveliThe moment he heard about the event, Larino knew he had to sign up. He put on one of his flannel shirts for the occasion, a yellow one as opposed to his usual darker colours, plus his usual black joggers and trainers. He then proceeded to slip on his baseball cap he got for Christmas to keep the glare out of his eyes (despite it being the middle of winter). He had always found that he stuck out in crowds because of how peculiar he was - besides, how many like him could there possibly be in the school? Not that many, or at least that he'd come across over the months since he'd arrived - a few wolves, one Japanese speaker and no autistics. Not that it mattered anyway, because Larino wasn't there to ponder his thoughts. Instead, he was heading down to Care of Magical Creatures to bond with an Augurey or two. He'd heard that they were shy, something he could certainly relate to.
He headed down early enough to catch the last few minutes of the unicorn session - from a distance of course, as he wasn't too interested in them. He liked that there was half an hour between the two sessions - it meant that he could sit and watch the professor set up for the creature he was interested in from a distance. Larino was much more interested in seeing the Augureys. Of course, he had read all about them, among other magical creatures, but he was rather intrigued in them, and found them somewhat relatable. They were said to be shy and dislike loud noises and big disruptions. Just like him. He silently dreaded what was in store for him on his birthday in 2 days' time. But yet he awaited the sight of the big blue eyes and greenish-black feathers of the Augureys. He had never seen one in person of course, but knew that he would feel a special connection to them. He just knew it.
When the time hit 1:30, the first year walked over to the area where the beautiful birds were waiting. In person, they were magnificent, and the boy couldn't help but give off a little smile. "They're amazing." Larino whispered under his breath as he reached them, at first unsure of how to approach them. Everything around him seemed to become irrelevant as he started to slowly walk towards it, his hand outstretched. Then remembering how the professor told everyone that the Augureys liked being read to, he picked out a book from the pile and slowly but surely walked over to a creature in the corner.
“Hey there…” Larino half-whispered, “Do you want me to read to you?” Then he realised that it wouldn’t be able to give him a response. “Hm.” The boy thought aloud. “I guess this is what everyone else feels like when I can’t reply.” Pushing his thoughts aside, the first year sat beside one of the birds, and opened the book he was holding. With a small smile plastered on his face, Larino started to read to it, occasionally reaching his hand up to as close to its head as he could to gently stroke its feathers. It felt nice to bond with it - an opportunity he hadn't had before. Only an hour before, the Slytherin had never seen an Augurey, let alone pet and read to one.
After having such an amazing session with the amazing creatures, Larino wanted to now, more than ever, learn more about magical creatures and couldn't wait for his third year, when learning about them would become a regular thing. Only an hour before, the eleven year old had no idea that they would have piqued his interest so much.

AUGUREYS
─────── ∘°❉°∘ ───────
────── date. 3 oct. 22 ─ outfit ─ @Lilliana Havenmore Pulling on a plaid, simple blazer over her black turtleneck and dark brown skirt and tights, Elira checked herself out in the mirror, making sure that she had dressed warmly for her afternoon outside. When it came to choosing between three creatures she wanted to meet, it took her no time at all to decide which one exactly she would pick. From what she's read, her option was the most interesting of all (to her at least) and felt that she wanted a quiet time by herself, with the presence of some calm, solemn creatures.
She checked her watch, sitting alongside a snake charm golden bracelet on her wrist; it read 1:13 pm. She had 17 minutes to get down to the stone stables where her creature of choice was waiting. Pulling her hair into a quick bun, and pinning it in place, the Slytherin girl left her dorm, out of the dungeons, and into the main bit of the castle. It was fairly quiet as she walked through the halls, mostly because it was quite a nice day outside, so maybe other individuals would have wanted to spend their time in the fresh air. It wasn't exactly warm, but it wasn't cold either. Just right, would have been the way to describe it. Just right.
Elira made her way down the rocky path to the site for Care of Magical Creatures, a lesson that she knew could only be taken third year plus. A shame, because Elira really wanted to study different types of creatures. Here was her opportunity: an errand where students at Hogwarts could interact with Unicorns, Jackalopes, and the creature she was heading to see now, Augureys. She had read that they were quite mild-mannered creatures, shy, and didn't particularly like loud disruptions. Just like her. With the exception of some EXTREMELY interesting dramatic situations that have already happened in the Slytherin house. The textbook also said that they were from Ireland, and liked to eat flies and insects. So in preparation, Elira had bought a jar full of said treats for the birds.
Once she arrived, she was greeted by a professor in a pink waistcoat, (which Elira would describe as a more fuchsia shade), standing proudly next to the Augureys. They gave off a sad and solemn demeanor, very contrasting against the Care of Magical Creatures Professor's choice of clothing. In her opinion, Elira was more dressed for the occasion and event than she was.
"Hello, students! Welcome to the portion of today's errand centered around the magnificent Augurey. Please be aware that these creatures are very shy and don't quite like loud noises and big disruptions, so be wary of their comfort and be kind to them. You may pet their heads--I've found they quite like that--or, if you feel so inclined, read them some books. Mister Sáez has generously provided some books for you all to choose from. I've discovered that our Augureys are far more inclined to trust you if you give them a little food for thought, so to speak." the Professor said, and the few students that showed up soon dispersed themselves quietly among the creatures. Elira headed towards a bird further away from the rest, with currently no people surrounding it, making sure to have chosen a book to read to it beforehand.
"Hello there, love," she whispered softly to the Augurey, raising her delicate hand to stroke the Augurey's head. Its greenish-black feathers rustled against her palm, and Elira smiled a small smile, before placing her wand on a tree stump, reaching into her deep pockets to pull out the jar of dead flies and insects. She picked one out gingerly, placing it in the palm of her hand, before offering it to the bird.
"Would you like some?" Elira asked gently, stroking the bird's head gently. The Augurey gave her a long, attentive look, before carefully snatching up the insect from her hand, and eating it whole. Elira gave a slight chuckle, picking out some larger insects to feed the creature with. "Don't worry, I have more if you want," she reassured the bird, giving them a couple more before the creature relaxed a little.
"Would you like me to read you a book?" the dark-haired girl asked, and the Augurey gave Elira a long look, full of curiosity, and just a vibe that said 'Yes, I would like you to read me a book.'
She then sat down on the tree stump beside the solemn creature and opened the book up to the first page. They spent a while sitting there together, the creature listening attentively as Elira read the words aloud to them, giving them head pats and food as the time went on.
Elira paused her reading, to look at the Augurey she was interacting with. "ya hungry?" she asked, and the creature seemed to give a little nod. Elira reached for the jar, handing the bird some more treats. "The book itself is quite interesting, no?"
The Augurey (which Elira by now had decided she'd call Theo), gave a slight bob in agreement, and she gave another quiet laugh, before looking its large, blue eyes. "You're such a beautiful creature, you know. With your gorgeous greenish-black feathers, those big, blue eyes.. You're so peaceful, and calm. Quite solemn too, but just so nice to be with. Your presence.. its so calming. I really like that about you." she said softly and smiled. This was the first being that she ever felt so close to for a while, and it wasn't even human. She guessed they just had that way about them. A kind of sense that they knew who was like them: so mild-mannered, not attention-seeking or boisterous.956/600

12 February, 2023 - Augurey Meeting Day!
It was Sunday, and AngelFyre had spent the early portion of her morning in private Bible study and contemplation. She would be meeting up with Simon for their group study at some point, but he had sent an owl that something was demanding his attention, so he was not exactly certain when that would be. She was not worried. They would meet up for their reverance study, no matter what. He also noted that he knew they had agreed to meet to visit the Augureys, today, at 1:30, but all he could do at this point was promise to try to be there, and if he had not contacted her again by 1:00 p.m., she should plan on going on ahead without him and he may be able to catch up to her there a bit later.
That last part of his message made her a little sad, of course, because any time she did not get to spend with Simon always made her sad. But there was more to it than her own selfish reasons, however. It was the fact that they had, together, done research on Augureys in the Library, and she knew Simon had been looking forward to meeting them. Any bird that could foretell the coming of rain with their cries was going to be a friend to a dhampir in his book. AngelFyre had been looking forward to the Augureys meeting him because if anyone could cheer a sad bird up just by being around them, it would be Simon. The boy just exuded kindness and gentleness... when he had his unsettling aura under control.
Ahhh! The thought pierced her brain like an ice pick. Was he having a bad day and did not want to be around the birds for fear of upsetting them? Upsetting her? AngelFyre determined that if he was unable to make it to the designated Augurey hour, she would immediately thereafter go find her fellow and check in on him. His bad days were seeming to become less frequent, but when he did have one, they seemed to be severe. She spent so much time with him that severe or not, it no longer affected her except to feel badly that he was feeling badly. Simon little realized how proud she was him. She knew how hard he worked at controlling his unsettling aura, and she could see how far he had come, even if he could not. The reality was that there was more work to be done though. He had made great progress, but it was not mission accomplished for him just yet. She often worried he was becoming emotionally exhausted and frustrated by the effort to not "feel like a monster".
In signing up for the Augurey slot, information that they may be able to feed and pet the Augureys was provided. AngelFyre had heard from older students taking the CoMC that sometimes the birds liked to be read to. That idea especially appealed to AngelFyre. She used to read to her ill and injured animals back home, and she knew it was an excellent way to be near and calm them. She had sent home for one book in particular, thinking it would be cheerful and may add a bit of color to their drab lives. She had read it quite often to Calvin Coolidge, her flightless pigeon at home, while he was recuperating from a broken wing. He seemed to enjoy it, and still liked it when she entered the barn carrying it, so she thought to give it a whirl with the Augureys. It had arrived by owl on Friday, so she was all set.
She had not heard from Simon by 1:00, so she had gathered up her things into her enchanted courier satchel and headed down to the stables. She expected most people would sign up for the unicorns, and honestly, if Simon had not arranged the most beautiful and private meeting of a unicorn for her in Hogsmeade just a little over a month ago as her Christmas present, the Augureys would not have even been a consideration for the girl. She felt about unicorns like Simon did dragons. But he had made the most beautiful interaction a reality for her, so she wanted to keep that memory ablaze and not taint it in any way with a group setting.
She approached just in time to see that a couple of people were there that she knew. She nodded to Kim and waved and smiled to her dueling partner, Emma, both of whom, if she was being honest, looked as down and depressed in some respects as the Augureys did. After listening to the introduction by Professor Blumenthal, AngelFyre approached her immediately before moving towards the birds and asked for their names. Names were important, and she knew on some level that birds must recognize the sounds if not, necessarily, the connection. Animals were smarter than most people gave them credit for, and AngelFyre figured, possibly incorrectly, that was likely even more true of magical creatures. She would guess it could not be less true.
Professor Blumenthal smiled and answered by pointing out the two closest birds to her. AngelFyre quickly catalogued names. That bird was Stanley and that one was Mia (oh! Simon would have LOVED that one and she chuckled to herself). Professor Blumenthal continued by saying the two perched atop the posts were Ulysses and Birdie, and he last two were known as AJ and Doppel.
AngelFyre immediately smiled and thanked the Professor before approaching Ulysses. He, she assumed it was a he based on the name after all, was a large, magnificent looking bird with large, piercing blue eyes. Their eye color was quite similar actually, which made AngelFyre smile. She knew enough to know that Professor Blumenthal would not have brought these particular birds out if they were not in some way used to socialization with humans, especially with those they did not know, so while cautious, AngelFyre was in no way afraid. She did as she had done with the unicorn, Catori, she had met just over a month ago. She approached slowly, but not timidly. She did not stare him down as that often was perceived by animals as a threat. She simply drew close to him and greeted him.
"Hello, Ulysses. It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is AngelFyre. I have come to spend a little bit of time with you if that is okay?" She was speaking softly and soothingly, and she smiled as he fluffed his feathers and then shook his head and began to preen. She set her satchel down and continued speaking to him, hoping to acclimate him to her presence and to her voice. She first reached for her wizard camera and decided she would take a few photos of Kim sitting and reading to his bird and also of Emma with hers. They were both far enough away that she knew it would disturb neither their birds nor them. If they turned out well, she would give them both copies as mementos of this day.
The camera, as she had hoped it might, brought out the curiosity in Ulysses. While focusing on Emma, she became aware that Ulysses had stopped fluffing and preening. She was still speaking the whole time, narrating what she was doing and just carrying on quite casually when she laughed outloud as suddenly her camera's field of vision was filled with a few greenish black feathers, a rounded head, and one very large blue eye. She took the photo hoping with her whole heart that it would come out. It would be absolutely hilarious if it did.
She pulled back her head to catch a glimpse of Ulysses' continued fascination with the camera. She held it still as he gently pecked at it with his beak. AngelFyre was not worried as he was not pecking hard. They were quite tentative pecks as he was simply exploring. This camera was a gift to her from Simon and if she in any way felt the bird would damage it, she would have placed it safely out of his reach. But for now, she saw it as her in to gaining his trust, so she was content to let him explore. There were a few opportunities where she could have reached up and petted the top of his feathered head, but she resisted the urge. Dealing successfully with animals was primarily about patience. It was always better to let them come to you than to press matters with them.
After about a minute or so, Ulysses' fascination with the camera waned and he sat back up, but this time his focus was clearly on AngelFyre. She was still softly speaking to him, only now she was telling him that she had brought a special book from home to read to him. She reached down and grabbed it from her satchel, being, careful to keep her wizard camera from banging into anything as it was now hanging from her neck. When she came back up into a standing position, she was holding "Oh Say Can you Say?" by none other than Dr. Seuss.
"I have to tell you, Ulysses, that when I learned I could come here and read to you, the first... well, the only... book that came to mind was this one," and she raised it up slowly in case he may want to examine it as well. He craned his neck initially but then fluffed his feathers out again and looked straight at her, so AngelFyre took that as a 'No'. "That is fine. You may be unimpressed now, but give it a few minutes and we shall see how it goes with you then. I will tell you I chose it because it is colorful and if sadness is something you wallow in, I hoped this might help to lift you out of that miasma, if only temporarily. While I happen to think you are a very striking looking bird, I do note that you very much look like a Dr. Seuss kind of bird, which has me now wondering if the renowned children's book author was a wizard himself." AngelFyre looked up at him and noted that he had edged a little closer to her. Excellent she thought.
"Here we go then. Prepare to laugh, Ulysses, even if it is only on the inside. That counts. I promise it does." AngelFyre opened up the book and started. 'Oh Say Can You Say?' by Dr. Seuss," and she flipped immediately to the bookmarked page entitled Quack Quack! She had chosen that to start with because it was about birds and she thought that might somehow be more appealing to the birds. She continued, "We have two ducks. One blue. One black. And when our blue duck goes "Quack-quack" our black duck quickly quack-quacks back. The quacks Blue quacks makes her quite a quacker, but Black is a quicker quacker-backer," and AngelFyre laughed merrily, but softly, after reading through the tongue twister with nary a stumble.
She looked up to Ulysses who was most definitely showing signs of interest now. He craned his neck down to look at the book, and once again, AngelFyre not only allowed it, but encouraged it. "Now do not go thinking I can get through all of these as seamlessly as I did that one," she cooed in his ear. "Wait until I attempt to read the end of 'Fresh Fresher Freshest' when I try to get through "Fetch me the finest french fried freshest fish that Finny's fries." It may bring tears to your eyes, Ulysses, but they will be tears of laughter and not of sadness!"
And true to her words, she butchered it, but Ulysses did not seen to mind. By the end of the hour, she was sitting cross-legged about a foot away from the fence and Ulysses was perched on her shoulder. She could honestly say she did not hear him laugh or see him cry tears of laughter before their time was done, but she was gratified to know that he did not willingly move from her shoulder and back onto his post without some gentle, physical coaxing to do so.
A small victory, but she would take it...for the both of them.

The short Hufflepuff's head tilted up as she stepped outside. To combat the colder weather, Serena was wearing a woolly hat over her ears. Her long hair lay loose over her shoulders. She donned a pair of fingerless black gloves underneath her thick robe and had a scarf wrapped around her. Most of her handmade armour was covered by robes. The exception was her boots which were the only thing that was visible. Her wand holder was entirely covered for once but she was also not expecting a fight today. Perhaps this was foolish. She ought to know better by now, surely.
Her eyes would flicker to the skies in the search of any grey clouds. It was not raining but she found herself pondering on the matter as she walked towards the Care of Magical Creatures cabins. It was a little after lunch and she was there to visit some birds known to be rather sad. She was curious how they could tell when it was going to rain, knowing that people said that they would cry as a prediction of rain. She did not know if that was true.
Most people probably went earlier to see the unicorns or even later to see the adorable bunnies. Did anyone want to see slightly scaring looking sad birds? Yes. Serena J. Towers did. There was something rather relatable about them. Perhaps it was the fact that they seemed unwanted or unloved. Maybe it was that they were rather shy, or that they seemed kind of sad.
Making her way into the Augurey section, she observed that there were several birds perched around. The area was a little dreary in its appearance. Serena would smile and nod towards the professor if she caught her eye, ""
"Good afternoon Professor Blumenthal," She greeted the fairly new professor before listening to the instructions. There were books that she could read them?
Her head tilted in curiosity as she listened to the professor, paying particular attention to the likes and dislikes of which she made mental notes of. A sad smile appeared on her lips absentmindedly as she fell into thought. It was not like her usual bubbly and energetic smile, that was for sure.
With zero hesitation, she searched the area for those books. Picking one at random, she made her way over towards a bird that no one else seemed to be interacting with. "Hey there, buddy," She would whisper softly as she approached the magnificent creature, "I'm Serena. Do you have a name?" She introduced herself, not quite expecting an answer but she would ask the bird anyway. "Would you like to hear a little story?" She asked the bird after a moment, waiting to see if there was any sort of indication in the bird's behaviour - to see if she was being listened to or the bird was about to take flight and flee from her very quickly.
She paused for a moment as she pondered what she could tell the bird. Her gaze turned to the book she had picked up at random, flicking it open. Staring at the pages, she quickly flipped through it trying to see if there was something worth reading in there but she was kind of unsure where to even start. Her hands stopped moving, staying on a page at random. "There once was a girl. A small girl, barely taller than you, actually," She started as she looked over to the bird. The words left her mouth before she realised what was happening. For some reason, she felt compelled to share a story - a story that she was coming up with by herself - rather than reading anything in the book that she was holding. "In fact, she resembled you in a lot of ways. Rather thin, with a similar expression on her face. Her hair was as dark as your feathers were, though her eyes were also darker. This girl carried around a dark secret though. For years, she kept this secret hidden and protected to the best of her abilities. All the while not realising that as time went on, this secret would gnaw at her heart. A void started to grow in her heart. This dark abyss kept on growing..."
Serena randomly spoke, telling the Augurey of this story. Gently, she would raise her hand and offer the beautiful bird a few pats on its head as she spoke.

Lions and Tigers and... Unicorns?
Mentions: @Reid Kovacs
When Reid had said he found a cute creature, this is not what she had thought.
Coming back to Hogwarts had been hard, the summer and past half year had been insanely hard for the growing Hufflepuff. Her life back at home had been a mess, and she had barely been paying attention to her wizard life at all. She found it silly, sometimes, that there was a whole part of her life that was magical. Even still, there were things out of her control. Things she couldn't fix with magic. It was a hard pill to swallow, and she was reminded of it as she returned to Hogwarts. She was capable of great things, but not everything.
Regardless, she had been spending more time with her friends in the Hufflepuff house, most notably, Reid. She hadn't really told him what happened, but she figured she didn't need to, considering reaching out so often was probably an alarm in itself. But he didn't need to know, so she didn't vent to him about it. They had never had that sort of relationship anyway, Rosie didn't think talking about the sad things in her life would make them any closer. Nor did she want the pity. She acted as she would, despite the everlasting changes.
Anyway!
Hiding behind the taller Hufflepuff, Rosie made her way over to the Augerey stand. Quite reluctantly. This mother fucker was SCARY. She had really wanted to go see the unicorns, but she was reluctantly pulled the other way once her stupid friend had decided he wanted to go see the ugly vulture-looking bird instead. Rosie wasn't an avid hater, don't get her wrong. But she was quite afraid of animals that looked at her with wide eyes and detachable eyebrows. But she was making an effort to be less of a coward! She really wasn't jumpy anymore, but she did find herself frozen if something freaked her out too much.
Fear aside, she was already here, and she was pretty sure Reid was ready to laugh at her. She walked behind him, lightly holding onto his cloak as she peered her head over his shoulder. She stared at the Augerey. It's big, wide eyes... It's detachable eyebrows... It's sad expression... The fact it seemed to be a lot larger than it was initially perceived as.... Rosie squinted at the poor bird, holding onto Reid's cloak a little tighter. "Nah, I don't like them. You're crazy." She whispered to him, hiding her face again so she didn't seem rude. "They look so sad." She asked, finally letting go of his cloak as she seemed to be more comfortable with getting a closer look.
Rosie approached the creatures finally, and offered a gentle hand to one of them, managing a soft smile. "Hey, you look a little bummed out, friend. You like being here?" She asked quietly, crouching and looking at the creatures. "It's pretty nice here, you know. Everyone's pretty nice."
It was times like these that Rosie really appreciated her time at Hogwarts. Sure, lots of it were academics and drama, but there were also moments of peace and happiness. She had been dragged to see some creatures that weren't unicorns, but hey! It wasn't all bad. They seemed pretty friendly, even if they were terrifying to look at. A lot of things were terrifying to look at, and then didn't end up being all that bad! Like Max Avery. Actually, she had been intimidated by most of the people she knew now. But that was beside the point. She was having a good day! And that's all that mattered, she didn't feel like she had those very often anymore.
