Meris is short for her age at about 1.27 m and weighs about 3.72 Stone. She has hazel eyes, and long brown hair. Her skin is fair and she has a few freckles scattered around her face and arms. Her garment of choice are pastel colored dresses. Her hair is generally braided in two long braids.

Mental Description:

Meris is generally happy but quiet girl. She is kind and thoughtful. She likes to help everyone feel included.

She gets frustrated if someone doesn't believe her because she is a very truthful girl. She is confident as well. She did watch the princess bride once and has nightmares about unusually large rodents.

She likes to read and draw and values time with her family. Her best friend is her younger twin sister - the older one. She is very creative and also loves nature and spends a lot of time alone out in the areas surrounding her home.

In her muggle school she did well in most of her subjects. Writing was a struggle for her. Generally, she had to many ideas on one page and a struggle to reign them in. Despite not having a lot of access to technology in her home this is one of her most favorite classes and she does it very well. In her class they had Minecraft for Education and she enjoyed programming her agent to mine and built for her. She once spent a whole week of lunch times designing a building program for it. She also dabbled in Redstone.

First Instance of Magic:
9 years 9 months 27 days

Meris sits under her favorite tree. A hairy wood ant scurries over her shoe. Her hand goes into her pocket and pulls out her trusty sketchbook, which at this point is nearly full. She takes her pencil and begins to draw the little ant. The ant climbs down the side of her shoe out of view. Meris sighs and turns her shoe, careful not to hurt the little insect. Unfortunately, it's already on the ground and after a few moments she spies it.

She speaks tersely to the ant, “You’re too small, hold still.” Her pencil thumps the other side of the ant to keep it from running out of site again. It scurries in the other direction. After attempting to sketch it one more time Meris throws her pencil, and it lands in the soil a few feet away from her and the little ant.

She looks back, blinks her eyes and wipes them. The ant is growing larger, and larger, its nearly the size of her small toe now.

It must be a dream; she thinks to herself. The ant continues to grow. It’s now the size of her foot – now it’s as tall as she is. She screams and, abandoning her precious pencil, she runs toward the house without looking back. The ant scampers in the opposite direction. Meris runs all the way to the kitchen, where mam is baking bread. She slams into her mam’s skirts and points toward the woods, a frightened look in her eyes.

“Mam!” Meris shouts emphatically, “The ant … the ant, it’s huge!” Then her voice softens slightly, and she tries to explain what she’s just seen.

“That must have been some ant, Meris!” Mam says to her with a smile on her face, “but it’s time to calm down now and get the table set. It’s time for cinio.”

Meris looks into her mam’s face in frustration, she points out the door and tries to spot the ant to show her mam, but it’s gone. She throws her hands down and pouts.

“It was there, mam,” she says sullenly and grabs the forks out of the drawer which has been opened for her and begins to set the table.

History/Background Story:

Meris Barovar, daughter of Cadfael Barovar and Lunete Meredith, lived with her family in near Llanharan in a small brown house which was nestled on their quaint little farm near Llanharan. Her brother John who was turning 19 this year was preparing to go off to university. Kyra her sister was in her last year of school. Lyra had just started year ten and then that’s where Meris fit in, at 11 years old and previously destined to attend seventh year at the local school. Just a year younger than her were the twins, Nesta and Owena. Last the most recent baby, whom no one had been expecting, Cade who was just over a year old when Meris left for Hogwarts.

She shares a room with the twins and it makes for a cramped space. Her wall is plastered with drawings of insects and animals as well as pressed flowers and plants from the country around her home.

Meris’ best friend was her sister Owena, who happened to be the youngest twin by 7 whole minutes. Funnily enough when Mam went into labor, she had no clue she was having twins. How the midwife had missed it was a mystery to be sure, but 5 minutes after Nesta was born the midwife had rushed over to take another look at her and counted all her limbs and fingers and toes. Then she went back to Mam and informed her another baby was coming, as she noted that an arm had emerged into the world first. Just two minutes later Owena was born, and she let out a wail objecting at being left behind. Meris, who had been just one at the time had rolled and scooted over to Owena when her basinet had been scooted next to the crib. Owena met Meris before they even handed her over to Mam.

Although Meris is a quiet sensitive girl she enjoys adventuring and finding creative ways to solve dilemmas. One of her chores was to feed the family cat. For only the desire to sleep in on Saturday mornings she created a sand timer to activate a clock circuit to open a box after 12 hours. It only took 12 hourglasses which she also made out of stuff that her Mam had set aside for recycling. It had been worth it because for the next 6 months the cat always had her food on time and Meris got to sleep in.

Then the twins had decided they needed the sand for school project they had taken her hourglasses completely apart dumped them out and repurposed the sand. Oddly enough, the next day after her sand had been unceremoniously stolen the twins had woken to find their entire floor covered in sand. No one could say how it had gotten there so it was assumed that Meris had done it out of anger. Though she denied it she was sentenced to clean “every last grain of sand” out of the carpet and then because she had lied (which she had not done) all of her projects had been removed from her room and when she did not relent and tell the truth she had to bear the look of disappointment on her parents' face, which broke her heart. She spent days on her hands and knees cleaning up a mess that she knew she had nothing to do with and during that entire time she refused to talk to either twin sister because she was sure the Nesta had done it on purpose to get her in trouble.

Sometimes Nesta got jealous of how close Meris was with Owena. Owena would never tattle on Nesta no matter how much she loved and looked up to Meris. It was a twin thing she supposed. The injustice of it all just riled up her heart.

While that had surely been the first instant of wandless magic no one really noticed it because well, they had no clue magic even existed. Instead, the next event is what was recognized, though, not by her own family. After all, a child’s imagination can create such things every day, but surely that’s all it was… imagination.

After some time when all had finally been forgiven but not forgotten, she watched the Princess Bride with her family. It convinced her that larger than life animals existed which is why, when the ant grew larger, and larger, … and larger… in front of her eyes it was like stepping into one of her darkest nightmares, which up to that point had been about Rodents Of Unusual Size just like in the movie. Her mam had blown it off like she was having some imaginary playtime and her tad had been no better. Adults never understood such things. It was like they reached a point where they forgot about the monsters that lurked under the beds.

Meris never went into the forest alone after the ant, even when she was following a butterfly trying to sketch it in her book. She couldn’t… she was sure it would drag her off to its nest underground and she would perish in the depths of the earth.

One day when she was outside drawing, she was perilously close to the edge of the trees when she heard a scream followed by a shout for help from Nesta and Owena. She stood there, paralyzed with fear, staring in the direction of the screams.
Nesta yelled desperately “Hold on, no, don’t let go!”

Meris swallowed the lump in her throat and stepped forward and when the next scream came, she broke into a mad run toward the sound. Ant shadows chased her, branches swatted at her, roots threatened to trip her but still she pressed forward until she found them. Nesta was straddled on a log which bridged a little streamlet and Owena was covered in what looked like slime and holding onto a branch and Nesta’s hand for dear life.

Neither child was in any real danger, but you would never know it by the way they were behaving. Meris ran down the bank into the murky water and got under Owena’s feet and managed to get her to let go and she attempted to hoist her and take her out of the water. This ended up with both of them landing in the filthy water and covered in muck.

They came out of it laughing until they got home and Tad made them get the muck off outside with the hose. He was fairly sure it would stop up the pipes if it got flushed down them and then they would have to fix them. Unfortunately, Mam agreed so the hose it was. Meris still didn’t like to go into that creepy forest, but she was proud of herself for going in anyway.

At the end of the last summer a professor from a school had shown up at her door. A lengthy discussion had ensued and by the end of it, Meris’ story about the ant had been verified... however, she had never been vindicated for the unintentional room full of sand.

Meris was given a rather lengthy letter from the headmaster, someone called Solomon Lear. She’d never even heard of him. It was supposed to be a good school and had a wonderful reputation. It was a boarding school. The clincher, it’s a magic school for witches and wizards. Apparently Meris was a witch.

Now she was leaving Owena behind. She felt like she was lost without her sister. She didn’t know who she was without her family. Now she would have to figure that out. No one else was going because no one else was magic. She would be alone. No Mam, no Tad, no siblings, no one.

The decision was made and the decision was that she would go because how could she give up such a unique and wonderful opportunity. Tad and Mam took her to the train which she road from Llanharan’s Train Station to King’s Cross where her wizarding world adventure finally began.
