Jake hustled to take his place just in time, almost late to starting his duel. THAT would have been a disaster. The disasters that could come FROM dueling was bad enough. Yeah... watching over duels with other fourth years was a lot harder, because they could do a lot more than younger kids could (Jake was still scarred from that last duel, where his classmate Evelynn had taken a strike of lightning) but the bright side was that it meant he actually got to watch over the duels of people he knew. Sometimes that he was even friends with. Of course he couldn't treat his friends differently. That just wouldn't be fair. Treating your friends differently was called being biased, and biased was one of the worst things that somebody with power could be (Something Jake knew a lot of, and it sure made being a prefect hard, when it was your friends that were breaking the rules, and they didn't see that whole bias thing the same way).
But when the duel hadn't started yet, that meant Jake wasn't a captain, he was just Jake, and he could spare a small wave towards Santario. It had been so long since they'd talked... and to tell the truth he didn't know if Santario even wanted to talk to him anymore... But he still waved at her all the same. Maybe he could go talk to her after.
"Okay everyone, you all know the rules, right?" the small fourth-year said, as he looked at the duelists. He was sure that they did. There were captains and former captains amongst them after all. That was the other relief with watching over fourth year duels. Jake didn't really like talking in front of people, and he always felt like he'd fumble his words or something. "No cheating, and remember to let any players that can't continue be safely removed from the platform." he said, trying to sound as official as he could. That was really the most important rule. And please, no lightning.... he thought to himself, though he couldn't say that last part out loud. Maybe he needed to write some kind of petition or something to ban it. George was good at that kind of thing, maybe he could tell him what he wanted to say and George could write it up? Still, that was a thought for another day.
"Good luck to everyone, and may the best team win!" he said as he always did, stepping back to let the duel begin!

Slytherin vs Ravenclaw: Match 9
How on earth was it time for another duel already? Surely the last one had just finished? Time was an illusion, truly. This time around she was reunited with the one and only Thomas Baines to raise some hell so it’s safe to say she was more than a little excited. As she listened to the rules for what felt like the millionth time Callie moved back and forth on the heels of her feet in anticipation.

And so, Thomas found himself on the piste once more. This time, without his title as a dueling captain, and with a brand new wand to his name. Admittedly, the Ravenclaw felt some apprehension and seemed to have been giving the new wand something of a stern talking to before taking his place next to Callie. She was his first dueling partner, and one of his best friends, so there was certainly no lack of confidence in the person he stood alongside.
"I think this'll be interesting" he commented idly, for once not finding it necessary to be boastful and rude to his opponents. Regarding the wand he held, Tom hoped that its unfamiliarity wouldn't cause an issue... Naturally, the boy had practiced plenty, but this wand hadn't yet seen any action (at least, not when wielded by him).

Ileen’s eyes were not fixed on the crowd or their opponents when she entered the stage. She was rather staring into space, mentaling bracing herself for the battle to come. Last time, she had left the stage standing but defeated. This time, it was supposed to be different. The wand in her hand was warm and familiar, her hand steady and calm.
With a deep inhale she briefly glanced at the two Ravens before she turned to her new partner. Santario Martin. After their first and friendly interaction, they both had been wrapped up in other stuff and never really interacted one on one ever since. All the memories she had of that girl were positive though. It was a good feeling to have someone on her side that she felt comfortable with. They had fought side by side and went through a lot as most of their house. There was a connection for her. Both healers, both connected to people that others might see as difficult. Both fighting their battles, one way or the other… Not that she knew much about Santarios life. Just the events that they had shared.
But enough. Now it was time to put the learning into practice. A soft smile curled the brunette's lips as she raised her wand. “Ready to show them how it’s done?”

Slytherin vs Ravenclaw: Match 9

This was Santario’s first duel since her and Dmitri stepped down from captain. Dmitri cited needing more time to study for his NEWTS and Santario was slowly slipping into isolation, but duel and practice always seemed to keep her sociable, at least with the team. However, she had started to study something that deviated from her healers path. The only thing that still connected her to him. He was one, and she realized that while subpar compared to him, so could she. It was now an obsession and one that took up enough of her time despite knowing it would be years before she could ever really call herself one.
Santario walked up onto the piste and nodded to her partner and once more to Jake as he spoke. Admittedly outside of practice Dan had not had a lot of time spent with Ileen, they ran in different circles, but from what she remembered from a night years ago they had things in common and she liked the girl.
"Indeed, good luck." San was typically far less cocky than the rest of her team was despite her winning streak. Everyone was strong in their own way and it was something she learned never to underestimate.

Jake watched the duelists closely. You could sometimes tell what a duel was going to be like by just looking at everybody's faces before it started. The Ravenclaws today looked easygoing, or even excited. The Slytherins a little more serious, but not in a scary way that looked like they were out for blood. Just the regular kind of serious. The kind that seemed like it was going to be a good professional duel. Jake felt a little bit at ease.
Then all heck broke loose.
As soon as the duel began, there was a blinding flash of light. Thomas had raised his wand high in the air, and any Slytherins looking in his direction would have their vision completely flooded with light. But Thomas's arm wasn't the only one moving. Robes billowed in massive gusts of wind that collided across the platform. Callie had shot forth gusts at BOTH of the Slytherin team and though they would begin to be blown backwards, they had a trick up their sleeve as well. It was Santario who had shot the gust of wind in Callie's direction and it would hit its mark as well, just as Ileen's flame spell did the same, both spells perfectly on target, the two elements feeding off each other to light Callie's robes on fire!
Everything happened so fast, and with the light, Jake could barely tell what had happened. It was only when he shielded his eyes with an arm over his forehead (luckily he didn't need to use a wand) that he saw what had happened to Callie. He watched nervously to see if the flames were under control - he'd never seen a duel start just like THAT before, and he began to regret his thoughts about how nice a duel it was going to be. These were all fearsome competitors and they might just all take each other out before they could hardly even blink!

Slytherin vs Ravenclaw: Match 9

The beginning of the duel was always the best. You could feel the static building in the air like lightning about to strike. It would only be wind, fire, and one very bright light ball this time. As Santario sent her Ventus over to Callie, she noticed Ileen’s particularly phenomenal cast before bracing against the wind that enveloped her, pulling strands of hair out of her neat braid, causing them to whip about her face. The most annoying thing was the light in the sky that caused Santario to raise her hand and attempt to shield herself against it. It might help the sting in her eyes, but it wouldn’t help with seeing her opponents any better. Santario looked over to Ileen with a smile. “Great cast!” She called out over the winds surrounding them before turning her eyes back toward the Ravenclaws. She could live with the winds, but it seemed Baines was set on being a menace.

Slytherin vs Ravenclaw: Match 9
The familiar mixture of triumph and guilt rushed through the girl as she sent the flames towards their opponents. This spell had felt particularly powerful…. Although - Of all the pains, burning was probably the worst. And she as a healer had a natural aversion against causing it.
But she had not much time to regret her choice of cast - almost in the same second a jolt of light completely covered the other side of the stage.
Reflexively Ileen raised a hand to cover her eyes and relieve the piercing pain just to find herself caught in a jolt of wind. Silently cursing the Slytherin fought to keep her balance while being blinded and disoriented. Interesting. She normally had duels with dark or foggy starts. This was a new strategy…
She was pulled out of thoughts as her partner called out to her. Ileen averted her eyes from the light and returned Santario’s smile. This duel had a different tone.
“Thank you and likewise! Are you okay?” There wasn’t time for more.

FIRE AND WIND? That combination sucked in particular but it wasn’t like she had much choice in the matter. Their spells moved too quickly for her to dart out of the way and as such she was left aflame and stumbling around. Such is life as a duellist…a fact she had long accepted throughout her year or two of duelling. Perhaps a touch concerning at her age but she didn’t care too much. Duels were too fun!
