The Feathers in a Crib PV

Aurelia had done it, apparating to the location successfully with a few pictures sent for her reference. That was an accomplishment of an impressive first. The sight that came with her crepuscular animagi form allowed her to see so clearly despite the darkness enveloping her at this late hour, as she soared towards the residence. Glowing in a soft ambience of candlelights, the window was like a beacon in the middle of the night. The winds, however, made it quite the feat to land but after a try or three ungraceful attempts against the pane of the window, she eventually found her footing on the narrow sill.

The birth of a child into the world was the brother of someone so dear to her. Enclosed in a letter she received a little more than a week ago were the words from him asking her to quite the exclusive visitation to see the newborn baby. Gladly she excitedly accepted with a letter sent back his way towards the school in the far North of Europe. Now here she was, waiting in sheer anticipation to be snucked let in. The owl didn't have to wait too long at all as a tall figure came to open the window, sliding it up for the rather large avian to enter.

Regaining her human form as soon as her feet grazed the carpet. Dressed in red and a brown coat over. "I made it," the adolescent witch stated with a smile crescenting her eyes. "I didn't wake him up, I hope," She whispered, her landing wasn't as smooth as she intended. It had been months since she'd last seen him in October now the distance closed, she felt at ease to be with him away from eyes of the perilous public. "I brought him a gift, it's an ugly little thing," She said softly, holding out a small owl plushie which she pulled from her coat.

Lysander always believed that any young lady involved with him for this long would have had a proper introduction to the family by now. But given the circumstances of his and Aurelia’s relationship, it was best kept out of the public eye. When the tenth marked the arrival of someone too young to incriminate the couple, Lysander wrote for her presence at his father’s estate to meet the addition. In a way, it was as close to family, to normality, as things were going to get. He aspired to make the memory last.

He did not have to wait for long. Quietly reclined in the nursery’s rocking chair, Lysander lifted his head to scratching at the window and the form of the animagus who’d done it, her landing rocky but no less impressive. It was not uncommon for staff to retire late and rise early, preoccupied with their own duties and bustling gossip surrounding the property’s happenings. The current time was selected through careful, years long observation of servant habit. None should be active, but Lysander was prepared to guard and lie between his teeth if it came to it, for Aurelia was sneaking in tonight.

The first thing Lysander did after shutting the window was to bend down and kiss her. “You made it,” he repeated tenderly after pulling away, a hand raising to caress her cheek. Pressing against the small of her back, he wasted no time in guiding her past the mildly lit fireplace and to the boy’s bassinet where it was warmest, a silent apology for her turbulent travels. “No, but his nanny’s in the next chamber over.” It came out whispered above the wind from outdoors, a confirmation that they’d need to remain quiet. With his height he was easily able to peer down at his sibling, dimples deepening in his pride. Aurelia passed him a gift. “What do you think? I mean, a seventeen year gap between us is something, huh?”

The child was named Ernest. Lysander hadn’t made the connection at the time, but it was meant to pair with their sister’s Constance; two virtuous names chosen by parents that were anything but. Just thirteen days old, Ernest lay belly-up in his bassinet, tiny fists balled peacefully amid cotton white linens. Accentuated further by the gentle glow of candlelight, his hair appeared closer in colour to that of his mother’s, but it was likely to darken over time like most Stavrous. “For you, buddy,” Lysander said in half an octave higher, passing the stuffed owl over the railing as if presenting it. When he, still in deep sleep, responded with a reflexive grasp towards nothing, Lysander merely smiled and set the toy at the baby’s feet, where it would remain as long as the two of them were there to watch over him. “I’m certain he’ll love it regardless, Auri. I think owls rather fit him already.” It was thoughtful. Not ugly in the slightest.

Finally, they closed the distance since their last encounter in the hospital wing in October. The tall lad bent down. At the contact, her lips broadened into a smile, deepening the kiss, if only briefly before he pulled away. Through her long lashes, she returned an endearing glance as she nuzzled against the gentle touch of his hand. It had been far too long maintaining their pretence, keeping away from the other to avoid public scrutiny. Within the four walls around them, there wasn't anyone else but a baby as a witness to their vice. Their problems and the biggest unspoken between them would be set aside for now.

Lysander led her towards the fireplace setting the crib in a comforting amber glow. The warmth was settling after a flight in through chilly December winds, even if she had the down of feathers securing in some heat over her skin. "I think he is beautiful." It wasn't the surroundings that stirred the warmth emitting through her chest at the sight of the baby laying peacefully in repose, but more so from an innate nature within her. "He is exceptionally lucky to have an older brother like you, Lys." Her fingers ran lightly along his forearm as she told him in a whisper.

As the owl was set down, the baby shifted in the cot, stirring awake. Ernest's eyes opened tiredly as he stared up at the couple standing over him - they resembled Lysander's. A precious thing. Ernest made a soft gurgle, a sound that was perhaps almost magnetic to the adolescent girl. The Gryffindor tilted her head up, meeting Lysander's gaze. "Can I hold him?" In a quiet plea, she asked, her eyes appearing to glimmer. And to her uttermost elation, he had let her.

Reaching down towards the tiny child, a hand would carefully glide under the baby's shoulders, at his neck, while her other would scoop under his bottom with ease. To her, it came so naturally as she cradled the infant close against her. "Hello there, little man," Aurelia smiled down at him. The lightweight on her arm and warmth was comforting, setting an intrinsic flutter in her chest. Vaguely aware that he was staring, her cheeks flushed in a tinge of red. Almost sheepishly, Aurelia met his gaze again. "Here, Lynn, you should hold him." Turning, she stepped closer to very gently transfer the baby from her arms into his, reluctantly so. All the while ensuring he held his brother right.
