Colliding with the lavatory door, Monica entered the room, not taking into consideration that others maybe occupying the space, but she didn't care. When her body slammed into the door, and it shut behind her, it was if the knife that had been stabbed into her was pulled out, and all that came gushing out was the emotions and pain left behind by the wound. Monica walked to the middle of the room, frozen in a moment, she could hear her breath as it filled the space...

Breath in--

Breath out--

The room was cold, the air moist, it was only now that Monica felt her body throbbing, was it from the fall in the hall? Bashing against the door? She didn't know, nor did she care. She stood, a statue in place... staring off into oblivion, her thought spiralling, and careening into each other in her head. Then...time started.

Her legs bent underneath her weight, loosing all will to keep her standing upright. Her knees came in contact with the concrete first, followed by her head, as she fell into her knees, resting in a cradle position as she sobbed. Her breath became stagnate as she fought for air with every second that ticked by. Tilting her head up to gasp for air only revealed the tear tracks that stained her face. The edge of her robe was dusty from the floor, and fell askew on her shoulders. She fought for another breath before hunching over again.

"This isn't real...IT CANNOT BE REAL." Not even noticing she was speaking out loud, her words bouncing off the castle walls. She swayed in place, trying to bring comfort to her shattered heart.

It was unclear how much time had passed since she entered the bathroom... seconds, minutes? Did it even matter? After a moment she was able to reclaim some breath, bringing herself to a state of peace. She sat up and grabbed the letter from her pocket, scanning over the collection of letters again that imprinted the parchment. Her tears morphing the fine lines into marbled messes. She blinked in great succession in an attempt to clear her vision. She used the edge of her sleeve to wipe her face, and was able to see the words clearly on the page.

Tears reformed pools in her eyes as she continued to read... Then the bathroom door opened. Monica folded the letter as soon as the sound echoed in the space. Before she had a chance to stand up, the person came into view... it was June.

June wasn't particularly in the mood to be scolded for running in the halls, so she followed Monica at a brisk walk. The blue-haired prefect had rushed into the bathroom, but from what June could gather it was more because she was in distress and less because she needed to use the facilities. Hopefully. If not, the fact that June was following her would be very awkward.

As June approached the lavatory, sounds of muffled sobs and shouting grew louder. Concern clouded June's face as she pushed open the door, only to see Monica on the floor with tears in her eyes and a letter in her hands. June wouldn't say it to her face but... The poor girl looked a mess.

"Oh, Monica..." June knelt besides her, rummaging through her bag for a handkerchief or something. She pulled it out, offering it to Monica, "Here, take it." June stayed sitting next to her, unsure exactly how to comfort Monica right now. Was she the kind of person who appreciated physical touch? Would that make it worse? Sitting close to the Slytherin prefect seemed good enough a solution for the moment.

"Did... Did something happen?" June glanced her over, was she injured, perhaps? "Do you need to go to the hospital wing?"

Perfect, the last person Monica wished to have seen her in such a state. She took her sleeve, trying to erase the tears from her cheeks. Though, the sleeve was already drenched, and rather then clean her up, it nearly made the situation worse. The cold soaked garment just encouraged more tears to stream down.
June came rushing to Monica, Kneeling down next to her. What on earth was she doing? Monica held nothing against the Slytherin girl, but the two of them never bonded on a friend level, it was odd that she seemed so concerned with Monica's state? Shouldn't she have just walked away, let good enough alone? Why was she here? Monica had whipped away any perspective of June becoming a close friend, or even an acquaintance. They had nothing in common, the girl seemed to hold some sort of wall up for her personal life, and Monica just didn't know how to go about building anything further than a friendly smile in the hall.

Yet despite all of that, this was the girl Monica rammed into. Not only that, but the girl that followed after Monica to... see if she was okay? Perhaps Monica read the dynamic wrong? Perhaps June was more connected then what was shown?

June pulled out a handkerchief, offering it to Monica, "Here, take it." She remained seated next to the blue haired girl in destress, close enough that her natural body heat was felt through Monica's robe. Monica took the cloth, finally whipping way the tears, it was soft, and soothing to her face.

Monica couldn't bring herself to say anything, her words and mind were disconnected. Like strangers on a bus. The intent to interact was there, but neither one took the first step. Instead, June's voice was heard in the mist of searching for words, "Did... Did something happen?"

Monica nearly chuckled, what a funny question. Nothing happened, and yet her world was crashing down. How do you even describe that to a person? She was so uncertain about her own feelings, so lost in her own mind, there was no way she could bring another person on board. Even if she could... it was a sinking ship. Monica simply leaned over, falling onto the girls shoulders. She didn't have words to share, but she just wanted...a Hug.

Her arms wrapped around June, tears began to form again, now falling on to the blonde girls shoulder, though Monica tried, there was no stopping them. She grasped the letter in her hand, squeezing the life out of it. Her knuckles whitened before she released, There was no killing the letter. Nothing could change it's contents.

After a moment, she sat up, not looking at June, but whipping the new tears from her face. Taking in a big breath...she looked up at June, who was probably second guessing getting involved in this situation. "Sorry..." Her words were corse, and frail, "It's---I---" She still didn't know what to say, "I'm not hurt...and I'd rather not go to the hospital." Her chest throbbed as though a bolder had crashed into it.

Monica... Hugged June. Tightly. June squeezed Monica back, gently rubbing her back as the girl cried on her shoulder. The sound of crumpling paper echoed through the room as Monica squeezed the parchment tight. June looked at it with concern, had someone written something awful to Monica? Who would do such a thing?

Monica sat upright once more. "Sorry," she said to June's surprise. June grabbed Monica's hand, squeezing it tight while looking her in the eyes. "Monica, you have nothing to be sorry for." She offered a soft smile to the crying prefect, squeezing her hand again before letting it go. June felt a bit of tension leave her body as Monica confirmed she wasn't injured. Thank Merlin. June nodded, "That's alright, we can just stay here, then."

June didn't think she'd ever seen someone in such distress before. She racked her brain, trying to think of things that were helpful in times like this... Well, her mother always gave her a glass of water when she was crying, and that tended to be helpful. June opened her enchanted satchel and poked through her potions supplies. It wasn't ideal, but a glass vial would have to function as a cup for the time being. Hopefully June had cleaned off all the flobberworm mucus well enough.

She pulled the largest of the vials out of her bag before quickly filling it with cool water from the sink. "Here," she said as she handed it to Monica. She sat on the ground again, sensing that what Monica needed most was just for someone to be there. June let out a mirthless chuckle, her gaze trailing to the parchment once more. "If someone said something nasty about you, I will personally find them and make them wish they'd suffered a dementor attack instead of me." A sad attempt to lighten the mood. "I'm joking, but still. Did someone say something to hurt you?"

The lump in her throat grew bigger, her heart beat began to engulf her senses, becoming the only thing she could hear...

Bah-dum, BAH-dum...BAH-DUM

She started feeling hot, blood surging through her veins, her body reacting as if she were running a marathon, yet her body remained motionless, only her mind was racing.

Bah-dum.

"Monica, you have nothing to be sorry for." Monica blinked... it was hard to hear the words clearly, but she could tell June was speaking to her. Monica lifted her head, her eyes remained glossed over in thought as she tried to focus on June, as she lifted her head, Monica felt something on her hand... it was warm, and soft. Looking down Monica saw June's hand wrapped around her own. A tear fell from her eye, splashing against June's hand, Monica freed her thumb from under June's grasp, and attempted to whip away the tear. "Why is she doing this?" Monica pondered, resting her thumb still on the back of June's hand, just holding it.

Sometime went by, the silence deafening in the room. Monica shivered as the cool of the concrete floor began to seep through her robe, "Surely June's getting board at this point," Monica refused to speak, or move, or do anything that could agitate the remaining pain that she kept bottled up. It was only a matter of time before June would leave. Monica would be alone with her thoughts, she would get control over her emotions, and she would get through this!

*Click*

Monica turned, seeing June opening up her satchel, rummaging through it for...something. Before anything could be said, the girl stood up, "Finally" Thought Monica, she was beginning to feel bad that this Slytherin was just sitting next to her, wasting her time on a problem that was never hers to have. For the first time in minutes, Monica's breath quickened again... the anticipation was becoming to great to handle, she would allow one more good cry before denying any further dwelling on this stupid parchment... she would just throw it away, perhaps burn it... no longer living with it's memory, and allow herself to just forget--

The sound of rushing water brought all of Monica's thoughts to a hault. A moment later, June was back, seated right next to Monica as if she had never left, "Here." She said, holding out a potions vile filled with water. Monica looked at June, slowly taking the bottle from her. Placing the rim to her lips and taking a small sip, the water was cool, and refreshing. It was now that she could recognize how thirsty she was. She raised the bottle again, taking in more water than before, clearing the vile of half of it's contents. Monica took a big breath, placing the bottle on the floor, her throat felt less scratched, and in a weird way, her emotions seemed to have settled a little. Looking up at June Monica opened her mouth, "Thank you." the only words she could muster.

She noticed June eyeing the letter, Monica tightened her grip, hiding it under her robe, "If someone said something nasty about you, I will personally find them and make them wish they'd suffered a dementor attack instead of me." June let out a small chuckle, Monica dropped her gaze, she opened the letter slightly, "I'm joking, but still. Did someone say something to hurt you?"

"NO!" Monica snapped, before crumpling up the paper again. June had jumped at her response, shifted a little from Monica's side, she mumbled something... or perhaps she was just breathing, but Monica felt that her response was a tad harsh.

Loosening her grip on the parchment, Monica looked up at June, their eyes meeting at the same time, "Sorry...I--I, didn't mean to snap like that," Monica searched for words to say, she held up the paper... and just as she was about to speak, tears began to roll, but she was able to form words anyways, "This...My sister sent this..." Her voice frail, yet echoed in the chamber, "It's--" Monica couldn't finish her thoughts, she shoved the letter into June's hands, before burring herself in her knees.

NO!" June jumped at Monica's harsh tone. "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that..." June mumbled as she looked down at the floor for a moment, attempting to regain her composure. She wasn't sure she'd had anyone yell at her like that before, but clearly whatever state Monica was in was not indicative of her everyday personality. After a deep breath, she brought her eyes up to Monica's once more as the girl was apologizing. She offered a weak smile, as if to show that Monica was forgiven for her outburst.

"Victoria?" June asked absentmindedly as she picked up the parchment. Of the few things June knew about Monica, one of them was how important her sister was in her life. A pang resounded in June's chest as she realized just how little she knew about Monica after quite a bit of time knowing one another.

June's eyes flitted over the parchment, trying to read under the scribbled out words. The tone of the letter certainly wasn't hurtful, so what on earth could-

Oh.

June quickly finished reading the contents of the letter, largely uninterested in the pleasantries written inside now that she knew what had happened. She neatly folded the paper in three, creasing her folds to ensure they were as straight as could be, before placing it between her and Monica. June was definitely in over her head right now, but there was no chance of her leaving Monica without explicitly being asked to do so now.

She fought to find the appropriate words to say, the magical phrase that would comfort Monica and lighten the mood and make everything at least a little bit better. June tried starting many sentences, but no noise escaped her as she likely looked like a fish the way her mouth was moving. "I'm sorry," was all she was finally able to say. "I'm sorry your parents didn't tell you." Was that even the thing Monica was upset about? Did it even matter? June looked at the parchment, then back to Monica. "Victoria seems like a wonderful person."

Monica sat still, whether it was lack of ability to move, or will, didn't matter, she remained frozen in place. June could have gotten up to leave and she would have remained as she sat.

Time time went by, and only the crinkling of paper alerted Monica's attention. June was folding the letter back up, delicately, as if wrapping a perfect present, before placing the parchment down between the two girls. Monica didn't look up, her gaze only drifted over the letter, though her head remained mostly buried in her knees. June seemed to have gathered the weight of the contents, she became quiet, and moved very little, if any at all. Monica just sat with her own thoughts... would she say anything? Could she say anything? Monica started to wonder if she were in June's place, how would she comfort an outcasted soul?

Eventually words did escape the blonde girls lips.. though it wasn't what Monica expected...

"I'm sorry."

Monica nearly held her breath at such a phrase...As if it were a stab wound, and she was waiting for the pain to set in... but... there was no pain. There was no blood, there was no malice in those two words. So why did they affect her so.

She brought her gaze up meeting June's, tears welling up as the Slytherin continued to speak, "I'm sorry your parents didn't tell you." Monica looked down at the parchment, her hand falling on top of it, not opening it, but just fiddling with the creases. What was this feeling inside of her? As June pointed out, Victoria was in fact a wonderful person, probably the best one Monica had ever known. And yet she felt the way she did... why?

Was it because her fears she grew up with was true?... That she was different from her family, more that she had thought. Was it the idea that this fact made her feel like a dog, about to be returned to the pound for not being the right match? There is a lot to be said when dealing with the truth of ones own adoption. A melting pot of emotions, all equally true and untrue all at the same time. Fears conversing with realities to the point that knowing which is fictional vs factual becomes impossible to discern.

This was in fact what was going on in Monica's mind. The reality that all her fears she had grown up with had become her truth. The lie that she wasn't an Evan's became more real than the very air she was breathing. That emptiness she felt every moment of everyday, finally had an answer. So the question now became... so what happens now?

Looking up to June, the girl who was here, who followed her from the hallway, and now shared in this discovery, Monica searched for how to even begin to express how she was feeling... only to find no words. Instead, she sat up, picked up the parchment and placed it in her pocket. She looked down to the floor, finding it easier to speak to it rather than another person right now, but at least June could hear this little convo, "What happens now?" Her internal thoughts becoming her external expression, "I mean... have you ever wondered if your parents..." She didn't even know what she was asking, "...I'm-- not even their daughter." She spoke soft, but there was no break in her voice... she had pushed her emotions so far down in the span of a small moment, that a person could have walked in, and never had known Monica was in distress... anything felt better than dwelling in the pain of rejection.

She looked up to June, unsure of what she even wanted, but she was just glad to not be alone. There was someone beside her in this moment... Monica smiled before reaching for June's hand, squeezing it as if to say, 'thank you for being here'.

Monica was quiet. June wasn't surprised, she probably would be too if her reality was cracked open in such a way. So she let Monica be silent, leaning her head against the cool stone wall and looking up at the ceiling. She took slow, deep breaths in the hope that somehow Monica's breathing would naturally slow down with hers.

And then, in an instant, the atmosphere around Monica popped. Something had either clicked into place... Or broken. Either way, it was something June had unknowingly employed many times before. Simply saying "no thank you" to your emotions and placing them in a deep box for another day, a better day.

June laughed softly. "You know, Monica, I was crying that day we met in first year. Not sure if you knew that, I tried to pretend I was fine once you came over," she took a deep breath, turning to Monica again. June gently squeezed her hand back as she looked the prefect in the eyes. "I'm really glad you found me that day. I don't care who's daughter you are, you're a damn good witch and a good person." She offered a watery smile, hoping this was helping. "Anyone who can't see that can go and eat dragon bogies."

Listening to the Blonde Slytherin speak, Monica was pulled back in time, remembering the day her and June crossed paths. The day she ditched her classes to get a much needed break from the world. Before she was a prefect, before her summer romance... before her life was shattered. She was simply a girl, someone just learning about magic. Her only worry was being a 'good enough' witch.

How she longed for the simplicity of having that be her greatest concern.

Monica could remember quite well the day June referred to, how crisp the water was, how peaceful the grounds were... how horrible their first meeting was. All this time... Monica knew something was up, but it turns out it might have been less to do with who she was, and more to do with the timing of how they were introduced.

Sitting here next to her, in her most vulnerable state, sat June, who was finally allowing herself to be seen. Though as slight as the view was.
Wether it was out of petty, or the need to break through whatever awkward barrier they had up, Monica could care less why June picked now to open up, but the fact that she did, meant the world.

Monica looked down as June squeezed her hand back, a smile grew on Monica's face and it seemed as though the world had melted away. June looked Monica in the eyes, and for the first time, Monica looked back, not out of the social need to, but she really looked June in the eyes... were they always blue?

Junes words were soft, and pointed, "I'm really glad you found me that day. I don't care who's daughter you are, you're a damn good witch and a good person." Monica could see tears welling up in her eyes, and she felt a sting in her chest. Did June always feel this way? Why on earth would she only share it now?

The mystery of June Selwyn remains a complete enigma to Monica, but for now it didn't matter. Monica let out a laugh at June's comment about eating a Dragon bogies, whatever that was... the most she could do was assume it was an unpleasant thing to do.

Monica threw her head back, leaning against the wall, feeling the cold concrete seep through her robe. "Honestly Selwyn," She tilted her head to look back to her Slytherin sister, "If you had told me that yesterday, I might have felt offended you hid away your emotions... but now, in this moment... I get it." She paused and looked up at the ceiling, "Sometimes it's better to just--- pretend everything is okay." She closed her eyes as if imagining this moment without the emotional heart ache gnawing at her soul.

Monica took a deep breath, "Since we are all being honest here...I really don't want to be along tonight." She put her head down, nearly hiding, due to the fact she even thought to ask, "Would you care to have a sleepover, and forget about our issues for one night?"

O.. Offended? Monica would have been offended? That June hid her feelings that day?

June's eyebrows furrowed for just a moment at the thought. Why would that have been offensive? She tried to push away the thought, after all, it was an opinion that Monica no longer held so it shouldn't matter anymore. But there was something about the idea of someone bring hurt at a lack of June being emotionally vulnerable. Someone who didn't even know June, to add.

But of course, that didn't matter. Right? Right.

"A... A sleepover?" June thought about it for a moment, warming up to the idea quite quickly. She hadn't had a sleepover with anyone in a while. "I'm sure Leonard wouldn't mind that, and as long as you don't mind being co-ed with my roommate. You don't snore, do you?" June gently nudged Monica, her expression clearly a joking one. She nodded, her expression brightening. "Yes, a sleepover sounds lovely!"

June stood up off the ground, offering her hand to help Monica off the cold washroom floor. "Right then," she said, packing her potions vial pack in her bag. "Let's head back to the dorms then, shall we? I believe we have a long night of doing nothing but fun ahead of us."
