It was his first day back in Ilvermorny, again, with classes to resume as usual. The North American school, compared to Hogwarts in the Scottish Highlands, was like a Californian beach to the cold Alaskan shores. The bi-annual international exchange was only a few weeks, but the Spring Break following immediately extended his absence from Ilvermorny for a while longer.
longer than intended paragraph about my former bb. realised i really miss writing heinrich a lot ;-;Heinrch, although a puberscent teen with a kind heart, was still finding his voice after his year of bullying and hardship adapting to his condition before transferring to the American school. The cracks of his voice, an onset of puberty was only starting to fade, establishing a deeper range for the fourteen year old - not to mention he was growing really tall. The former Hufflepuff also set a chunk of wolf-sized weight on his shoulders during the days creeping up to a night's full moon. There was a sense of responsibility he felt, one akin to an older brother of alwas reminding him to take his potion. With how understandably unstable he grew during the peaks of moonlight, even if the lanky but obnoxiously strong boy threw all sorts of physical and verbal aggression at him without restraint, Hadrian refrained from lashing back - something he rarely did. But the soft hearted Bezuidenhout was always bombarded with guilt days after his transition, coming to apologise and reconcile even if Hadrian always told him there wasn't a need to.
consider this an update to how heinrich is doing ;-;It didn't take too long to get Heinrich off his tail, since spending the weeks in the convenience of the Zuheir Manor then a lengthy travel to the Bezuidenhout's in Europe, they had enough of the other for the time being. After settling back in his dorm, the wampus' next instinct was to find him, without a thought, pulled by sole desire. The fifth year set to find the third year of house horned serpent, the the older lad set of for Britain, it had been a while.
It didn't take long to find the boy seated by the Horned Serpent table, arms covered in colourful strikes of sharpie-drawn tattoos and the same boyish nest of hair. First what should he say? Even if they've been friends for a few years, Hadrian still always wondered why it was always so hard to find the first words. "Ayo, Parks, missed me? 'm going to nerd out in the library to finish all the work the professors graciously dumped on those who ran off to Britain." Smooth. "Or you know, you can stay here like a dweeb."

If asked, Miles would dramatically call himself downtrodden. He wasn’t hurting for company; he had plenty of friends and teasured them very much, but there’s just that one, y’know? That one person you always make room to talk to and it’s never like “please! Get me out of here! This conversation is hell boredom-wise!” To Miles, that person was Hadrian. Hadrian, however, had recently been real busy hanging out across the pond (insert borderline-insulting accent attempt here).
Returning to the theme of dramatics, today was the day everything would change forever. That statement is, of course, referring to the fact that the halls were far less empty than they had been for the last week or so. That could only mean one thing: the kids who went to Hogwarts were back! If Miles was gonna lie, the last person he would lie to would be himself, so he could admit he had been waiting for Hadrian to show up all day. And maybe that was because he was crushing a little bit.
That was fine! Was it a crime to like someone? No. It’s not even a crime to like them if they’re straight, but it sure does suck. Double whammy if they’re straight and such a good friend that even if you knew they were into dudes, you can’t be sure you’d tell them how you feel ‘cause you wouldn’t want to jeopardize the friendship. To be fair, Miles wasn’t so sure that Hadrian was straight. They never had a real talk about it, so who knew? But still, it was a non-tasty rocky road they were on.
All it took was an "Ayo, Parks, missed me?" to violently pull him out of his misery.
“Haddy!” Miles practically screamed. Immediately, he slapped his hand to his mouth and spun his head around to see if any of the staff was looking down at him with a disappointed glint in their eyes. Very frequently, the professors had to ask him to be quiet. Something, something, inside voices. This was an event, though! Miles jumped out of his seat and wrapped his friend in a hug.
“Yeah, you’re onto something Holmes. I could’a sworn they sacked you guys with twice the stuff we did while you were gone. They’re the ones who get to grade it all, though,” Miles reasoned with a smirk as he released his friend from his suffocating grasp. “This is wild, I feel like we’re in one of those videos where an army guy comes back home after a while and the dog goes crazy. Woah, dude, you wouldn’t know! I know we’ve been through this, no wizard wifi. No… wiznet. My bad.”
"Or you know, you can stay here like a dweeb."
“Hey, I didn’t know there was an invitation… think you skipped that part, friend,” Miles admitted through his kinda permanent smile. The sorta smile you look at and you’re like, okay? “But consider me a not dweeb ‘cause I’m goin’ with you. Ugh, you have to tell me all about what’s going on at Bullsharts. It’s been a while since I’ve last been there. How was the trip, you tired?”

And just like that, his return was announced loudly for every individual within the expanse of the cafeteria to hear. Hadrian Zuheir was back in school. Everyone knew Miles Parker, how could they not, he exuded anything but subtleties. He faked a cough, arms crossing and gaze averting sheepishly, acting as if this obnoxiously loud boy was unknown to him. Uneffective. Within seconds, he was pulled securely into a hug. If his arms were not constrained, he would definitely have reciprocated.
"I'm gone for 4 weeks and now you're trying to kill me," He joked. That smile. So infectious it brought the corners of his own lips to upturn into a grin. He talked a mile per second with unmatched enthusiasm. Same old Miles, he missed this. When at Hogwarts, he was bunked in with another Miles. But Thatcher was nothing at all like Parks. When they first met, Hadrian was in his third year while he was a clueless firstie, unfamiliar with the magical wizarding world. The constant chatter and an upbeat golden retriever energy took some getting used to, but eventually the muggle-born grew on him. And they stuck like two thin pieces of lego.
"So you've done it already. Cool, I expect answers, not-a-dweeb." With that, he started towards the library. In all honesty, he was really relieved to finally see his old friend. There was something about the younger lad that brought the better in him, no longer the arrogant stuck up pureblood boy keen to impress every girl he met. Not even Aurelia, that young woman terrified him at times. It was refreshing, in a way.
There was no facade put up, or underlying motives as most pureblood with their upbringing were accustomed to. Miles was genuine from day one, that was what he first noticed was different in him compared to some others. "Went home for the Spring break with Heinrich. Tried to call you, assumed you stayed here without wiznet."
"Bri' - ish, same old. It was... uh... fine... I guess" No, it wasn't just fine. He'd thrown a drink on his betrothed's dress at the ball before heading to brawl for a bit (with his 19 str). He was also lit on fire - no permanent damage. Same old Hadrian.

"So you've done it already. Cool, I expect answers, not-a-dweeb."
“Please,” Miles scoffed. “You can have whatever you want, but my answers are anything but right. Plus, we’re not even in the same grade, old man,” he laughed as he nudged his friend. Something wasn’t off, but it was off. Hard to explain, yes, but Miles knew when something was not completely right with his friend. What had happened at Hogwarts that shook him up? Was Miles the problem?
Miles followed Hadrian to the library, a little disappointed they were actually going to the library and not somewhere more fun. Still, he trailed along, looking up at the tall Wampus with a small grin. How was he supposed to do anything around him? Miles was weird, he knew that, but he found himself being cautious of getting too weird around Hadrian. When had he decided to care?
“Damn, I hope you’re not thinking I ghosted you,” Miles said with a frown. “Yeah I stayed behind this year. Mom’s moving us again for work stuff, so travelling and plans and whatnot… messy.”
Feeling the mood be brought down a little, Miles was stuck. He had wanted to get a rundown of the goings-on at Hogwarts, so he asked. He didn’t ask what he really wanted to ask, though. About that girl Haddy had talked about before. What the deal was with that. If they were done yet.
And Miles knew full well it was not what nice people did. Nice people didn’t wish happy relationships that they can’t even confirm are still going strong collapsed into a burning pit of fire and trash. It was beyond selfish, and even if they did break up, there was no telling whether Haddy would go for a boy. Worse, there was no telling if Miles’s personality was attractive to Haddy on any gender!
"Bri' - ish, same old. It was... uh... fine... I guess."
“Oh? Did they have one of those mad fancy school dances? That’s prolly the only thing that could make me sad about not going, honestly,” he said, before he could stop himself. He knew it was probably suspicious to ask about a typically romantic outing, unprompted, but it was more likely than not Hadrian would take it as general curiosity, knowing his friend’s interest in social events.
“I know, like, to them, we have an accent… but, like, theirs is funnier am I wrong?” He rambled after a second of silence. Quiet was awkward, and Miles didn’t like awkward. “They sound like cartoon poodles. Art imitates life, though, so maybe they were inspired. Aesthetically.”

It was only a couple of weeks away from Ilvermorny and he managed to forget that he and Miles, a friend of three years, were but two years different in age and class. Which meant that he likely didn't have any answers he required for any of his assignments. Something was off, indeed. Yet Hadrian couldn't figure out why he was more uneasy than usual. Perhaps he was still recovering from the recent aftermath of dealing with another one of Heinrich's episodes. Or maybe it was something else. Never mind, he brushed it off. "Right, more work for me then."
Finally, the topic diverted to Miles situation, from what he knew, Miles was probably more receptive to the feelings around him, and surely he felt the odd tension in the air. A sudden natural concern arose regarding his friend's response that stopped him right in his tracks, turning to face the boy. "Wait, Miles. Why would you ever think I would think you ghosted me? Of course not, man." He assured, brows furrowing. Sure, he might have been more disheartened than necessary to have his calls directed to voicemail, especially when Heinrich was throwing a fit throughout the house due to his werewolf hormones - if he could even call it that. But he wouldn't think Miles would ghost anyone really.
"Yes, the ball, it wasn't very interesting... or very fancy, this one. The music wasn't even good. Well, my girlfriend got a date to the ball that wasn't me. But who can blame her, that guy was at least three notches hotter. I splashed a drink on her dress. And I don't know, she stopped speaking to me?" All of it sounded laughable now he said it out loud, a smirk now on his face. He definitely needed to keep his ego more in check sometime.
He'd take the younger boy's arm leading him along as he went about on poodles. More walking, a little less talking. They weren't too far from the library, through a corridor and a left turn. They found a desk not too far across the room. Hadrian splayed his textbooks out on the table and his crumpled pile of assignments. "This is awful." He groaned as he started, pen in hand. But barely a few minutes in and he'd stop. Silence was just not their thing between him and Miles. "You know, I've been thinking about getting a tattoo. It's a muggle thing, but still cool. I don't know what to get. Ideas?"

When Hadrian said this year’s ball wasn’t even that good, Miles felt a little better, despite how he should’ve felt. And though he knew it made him the worst, he felt a bit good when Haddy said his girl wasn’t talking to him cause he spilled a drink on her dress. Like, of course, it wasn’t good, and Miles certainly felt for Hadrian. But he also felt for himself. In self-terms, upon hearing of the shambles this relationship was in, Miles felt… entirely not bad at all. Maybe even happy.
Looking up at his friend, however, Haddy was looking similarly unsad at how his relationship was going. This was when Miles let himself actually smile, because if he was the only one not smiling, that would be super weird. He wasn’t quite trusting himself to speak, though. That was a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe more talking about poodles was safe, so Miles tried it.
“Do you think maybe poodles are French, actually? I think they’re French in 101 Dalmatians. Those Beauxbatons kids–and I will never learn how to spell that, out of principle–would be like poodles,” Miles continued, being led by the arm to the library. “Can you do a French accent? You know I can’t, but you never let me hear yours and I’m not letting you graduate without doing it for me, so.”
The two eventually made it to the library, at which point Miles went quiet. Though he didn’t care enough to remember not to talk in class or most other places, really, the librarian sort of freaked him out. Plus, the whole place was vibe-city, and he didn’t want to disrupt it without a good excuse. It was for this reason that whenever Miles went to the library, as infrequent as those trips were, he was on his best behavior. Granted, that wasn’t much, but it was something. But for Hadrian…
“No way! Tattoos are super-duper not a muggle thing only. I’ve seen hella wizards with tattoos, but maybe those are wizardy ones that move. I think the ones that don’t move are cooler, cause they’re, like, set in stone. If they can just change, what’s that?” Miles philosophized, whisper-talking and grabbing a Sharpie from his pocket. “Gimme your arm, I wanna draw something.”

Miles always had a little something to say when he brought up 'his girlfriend'. Now sharing his short fallout with the girl, he expected a little more exuberance but all he got was that goofy smile. It was a little odd, Hadrian would note. Maybe Miles had grown tired of hearing about him and the English girl. Instead, Miles's interests laid more in the origins of poodles ramble as his rambling continued, Hadrian didn't mind one bit, simply humming a low 'mhm' to acknowledge that he was listening. Which in all honesty, he probably wasn't as he dragged the younger lad along.
"Uh... bonjour baguette?" The only two French words he knew off the top of his head. It didn't exactly provide Miles what he asked, but replicating a French accent - how did the French accent sound like again? "Now you're going to have to let me Graduate. Aurelia knows French -" Hadrian stopped himself, he had to stop talking about Aurelia with Miles.
He had forgotten how quiet Miles became the last time they were in the library. An abrupt silence, no more talk about poodles and french accents. It was so unusual that Hadrian was the one to break the silence, this time about tattoos. A raised eyebrow as Miles mentioned about having seen wizard tattoos. It would be unfair to consider him naive since Miles was still a muggle-born, but it was worth toe educate the guy. "Wizard tattoos? Do you mean dark marks or binding marks? How the hell have you seen a lot of wizards with dark marks?" He laughed, Miles has definitely been to places.
Hadrian would extend his left arm, allowing the other boy to do as he pleased. The pungent smell of the alcohol marker wafered in the air as he popped the cap off. While he should be doing his work in the meantime, Hadrian really didn't feel like it. Watching Miles sketch on his arm was much more of an appealing idea than the history of magic homework. Miles drew with the utmost concentration, it was kind of adorable with that almost permanent smile on this face and that nest of hair - wait no. The wampus quickly shook off the thought. No... no, no... absolutely nope. Girls were cute, not miles. Miles was a friend.
"I have something I wanted to ask you," Again, he broke the silence, clearing his throat nervously. "Uhm, do you want to... come along to the Hogwarts summer camp? There is a quidditch tournament and other events, you know. Would be fun?"

"Wizard tattoos? Do you mean dark marks or binding marks? How the hell have you seen a lot of wizards with dark marks?" Hadrian laughed, but – and maybe Miles was reading too much into all this – his questioning sounded kind of protective. Miles smirked, borderline-absent-mindedly drawing a little skull and crossbones with a speech bubble that said “arghh” on his friend’s arm.
“Chillax. Wizards can have like, normal tattoos too, no? I saw this one dude who was, like, fully inked out when I got my wand. I mean covered. He’s working for a thousand Voldemorts if all wizard tats are binding marks, or whatever,” Miles was rambling. I mean, talk about classic Miles.
Suddenly, Hadrian announced that he had something to ask Miles, who muttered something about Haddy forgetting to say “hear ye.” Immediately after the necessary comment, he came to a realization. If Miles weren’t such a pragmatic, logical, intelligent, left-brain-y dude, he would’ve thought Hadrian was about to confess his undying love or something. Maybe there were some confirmation bias-y things going on with that assumption, but it was also written over Haddy’s face. Probably.
"Uhm, do you want to... come along to the Hogwarts summer camp? There is a quidditch tournament and other events, you know. Would be fun?" So that’s super not what Miles expected.
Thankfully, he was busy working on the stupid little pirate-themed tattoo, shielding Hadrian from the pure confusion and slight disappointment written on his features at the moment. He paused what he was doing for a moment, but other than that, his position didn’t allow for an easy look at his reaction. After the disappointment and confusion had settled, however, Miles thought it over.
Well, sure, he’d have to talk it over with his parents and stuff. He also wasn’t a super duper sporty guy if you weren’t counting dueling. Plus, Miles was able to think of more than a few bad things that could come out of going to camp a continent away. That was more than enough. Nothing like a fun little twisting, turning summer adventure to Spice Up Your Life (1997) by the Spice Girls.
“Uh, for sure. Or, not for sure, for sure. But I’ll for sure ask about it! Sounds cool,” Miles wasn’t one for cliché one-liners. Oh, hell, of course he was. The one that applied there was a sarcastic “smooth.” Anyways, “What’s it like? You been?” The Horned-Serpent was genuinely curious, as he was with most things. Camp at Hogwarts… that couldn’t have been anything boring. Miles remembered visiting during one school year. The kids at that place were, very very simply put, interesting.

Miles became quiet for just a sec, the younger's attention glued to his forearm, still sketching intently. "I'm sure." he mumbled under his breath at the comment about tattooed wizards working for voldemort. How had it not crossed his mind about wizards getting the normal muggle tattoos, there was plenty of blood-status and there was a growing trend of younger generations of purebloods not keen to follow the tight customs in pureblood circles after all.
Miles took oddly long to respond, the movement on his sharpie marker going along his limb less frequently than before although appeared only retracing the finished pirate skull, Hadrian was almost about to ask checking on him but didn't when Miles replied. "Yeah, I went in 2020, it was cool, lots of activities." That really wasn't much of an answer to his question. In fact, it was far from the truth how the last camp of 2020 went, it was around the time he got knowledge of the betrothal arrangement with Aurelia. Admittedly, when he was still an egoistic 14-year-old prick. Hadrian just wanted Miles to come along this around, perhaps it would be much more fun with his good-friend around.
He withdrew his arm to inspect the piece of art. "Wow Miles, this looks sick af." One of the slangs Miles taught him of course. No pureblood would have learnt such without influence. "There is another Hogwarts exchange in October. You should come... if it's convenient for you, the Hexwizard championships are happening. Also, have you been to hogsmaede? " He asked. If anything, he would drag Miles to the small village and into the werewolf shed just for laughs.
