I was a little sad when Kim left, he was an alright guy! I said bye to him and he left.

“Guys look! We’re almost there!” I heard Alice exclaim, she had gotten up off the seat and started stretching. I followed, holding back whimpers when I stretched an already aching muscle. I hurt all over and I probably always will. I caught Ali’s gaze as I shuddered and quickly dropped it.

I didn’t realise the journey was so long,” I said, hopeful to get a conversation started. Maybe if we started talking again then this tension I could sense would be gone? Damn. Shouldn’t have hugged her. “I wonder what will happen now?!” I gushed; I laughed as Alice powered her way through the crowds: I guess she is as excited as I am.

I, however, started to tense up. There were so many people, so many smells, memories and it was so loud. Tears gathered in my eyes as, yet another person bumped into me. “Alice, wait up!” I called desperately; I didn’t want to be on my own. I’ve been on my own for 11 years and I hated it. It would be even worse to be stuck in the middle of this massive crowd! My senses gone berserk. I took a deep breath and followed headstrong; I could do this! Someone else bumped into me. “Get off me!” I practically growled, anger boiling deep in me. I was reaching my limit. Calm down Luci, I could practically hear mum in my head.

Just as I felt like screaming as loud as I could, I actually shoved past a kid just taller than me and got to a door! That's when I saw Alice again. I jogged up to her, chest still tight. “Blimey! It’s- its cha-os back there!” I stammered, closing my eyes and feeling the wind on my skin, I could smell all sorts of things but focused on the closest: the smell of coconut shampoo*. “Nearly got squashed!!” I joked, my hand reaching for my glasses.

What do we do now?” I asked. That's when I saw… someone hollowing for the first years.”Do we follow him?” I asked.

I had tried to just speedwalk down the hall of the train, but it was more of a sprint instead. I hadn't realized Lucian was so far behind until I heard him calling. I came to a slow pace, not wanting to hold up a line. "Oops! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to leave you behind. Heh." I let out a nervous laugh. I looked around and took in the crowd of kids of all ages. Pretty much everybody was pushing past each other. Lucian was right, it was chaos.

I suddenly felt the urge to get away from everyone by diving into the water, and staying there until everybody was gone. I took in the scene of the Great Lake. A row of boats and lanterns were seemingly stretched pretty far. That was probably to be expected. There were probably thousands of kids here. I took in a silent breath and tried to tune everyone out until I heard the person calling for first years. "Do we follow him?" asked Lucian. "Probably." is what I replied with. I looked around and saw other young kids moving towards the person calling.

I began to follow, making sure I could see Lucian out of the corner of my eye so he wouldn't get lost again.

"It’s okay, I just got caught up. I’ll try and keep up next time," I replied, rubbing the back of my neck.

Me and Alice walked together, following the herd of First Years to a… was he a half-giant? He was shouting loudly causing me to wince when we got closer to him. I could see Alice looking at me sometimes through the corner of her eye and I blushed in embarrassment— of course I nearly get lost and we haven’t even enteredthe building.

Well done Lucian, look like an idiot in front of your first proper friend.

"He sure does have a gob on him," I muttered, more to myself but I think she heard me if the little laugh was anything to go by. Wasn’t exactly false. He was like a foghorn! His voice was grinding. Dalian - he is 19 and is the son of one of my mums best friends, we occasionally went around his house - he was always singing the praises of this half-giant, how helpful he was when getting off the train.

"Right, so we get on a boat then? Awesome," a mischievous glint entered into my eyes as we climbed in a boat together. I shivered a little as the cool breeze set over us and yawned. Lazily, I put my hand in the water and a ghost of a smile came across me… the water was nice and soothing.

I closed my eyes and let out a small breath, my worries washing over me. I could hear loads of chatter, not good enough to pick out sentences but I could hear the excited whispers and stories.

I opened my eyes again, I didn’t want to miss this!

"No, I'm sorry I left you." I replied as he rubbed the back of his neck. "He sure does have a gob on him." said Lucian. I let out a small laugh but kept walking toward the short giant. After a bit more walking, I came to one of the boats and got in it with Lucian. I watched as he put his hand in the water and did the same. I leaned back a little on my side pf the boat, the air feeling quite refreshing. I just loved cool, breezy, air. It was especially calming after the chaotic voices from coming off the train.

I pushed my hair behind my back so I could feel more air on my face, then I rolled up on of my sleeves and plunged that arm into the water. "This could only be dangerous if there are piranhas swimming around." I said. "Right?" This was a magical school, after all. With magical creatures of any and every kind.

The water chilled my skin some, but I felt better. I had been to a summer camp before for three days and two nights. We were pretty much always outside unless we were sleeping or showering. By the end of that first day we were pretty much best friends. That's what it felt like, anyway. There was this one girl that was just a rotten tomato and made my ear bleed, accidental or purposeful? I don't know. Maybe the girls I shared a room with would become some of my closest friends. I mean- we would kind of have to be tolerant of each other in the least.

I snorted at the piranha comment, that would be a sight to see! "Forget piranhas, better make sure the grindylow’s don’t get you," I teased, splashing her with water. "Apparently a squid lives in here though. Meant to be nice," I mused.

I’ve never really seen any of the more hidden creatures. I’ve seen… Werewolves and Hippogriff’s as well as Nifflers. Merlin, Niffler’s! I asked mum to get one once and she refused so much. Hehe. I will get one, one day… it will be my best friend!

"Have you ever seen a magical creature?" I asked, I couldn’t remember if I had asked about her heritage. Was she Pureblood? Half-Blood? Muggleborn? It seemed a little… I don’t know. Rude maybe? After all, whatever she is makes no difference to who she is. She just might be more star struck with everything. Has she ever seen a house elf? There are so many questions.

I want to get to know her and her me. Would she want to know? That’s what friends do though. They tell each other about themselves. Hopefully not everything. I don’t want her to know my secret. Nobody knows.

Honestly, I’m not even sure Baxter fully knows what happened that night. I know that I’m not allowed around their house anymore. I get letters from Charlie around once every two weeks and we have conversations, but she says her father forbade me from going round. I told mum, quite sad really, because as much as I hated the experience, I would miss Charlie. Her reply was quick and left no room for argument, dad was right there agreeing with her.

“No! If that is what keeps her father from telling the Ministry, you will listen my boy!" he had said sternly.

“I’m sorry, angel, but I agree with your father. We just want you safe,"

I had felt awful but agreed nonetheless. Back to the point. Charlie knows - she told me - and my parents know, as well as the headmaster of the school I am assuming.

My friends cannot know.

Merlin, please let them never find out. Not yet anyway!

I shook my head and splashed her again, the water hitting her face once more. I started laughing loudly.

I paused for a second and then Lucian splashed me and asked his question about magical creatures. "No, not really. Also, what's a Grindylow?" I had never heard of this before. I thought for awhile. Why couldn't regular creatures be considered magical? What was the difference? Some animals had magic and others didn't. That didn't mean that the magic-less animals were less special. There were rare animals with and without magic. Just because my parents were muggles, didn't mean I was more special. He splashed me again.

"Alright, that's enough!" I said, rolling up my other sleeve and plunging my arm into the water to make it easier to turn. I splashed the back of his head with the water. I then wiped off as much water from my arms as I could so I wouldn't be soaking when we got to the school.

I thought of something to say.
"I'm muggle-born, by the way." I said, watching Lucian's reaction carefully without looking like I was judging him by the way he would react. I continued speaking. "Both of my parents are muggles. So are my grandparents on each side, I think." I started thinking about my family tree a little, then stopped because it was hurting my brain.

"What blood are you?" I asked.

When she asked about Grindylows. I wracked my brain trying to come up with an adequate description for someone who has never seen one. I shuddered. "Nightmare fuel for the weak minded. They lurk in the water… waiting for their prey… murky black skin to hide from unsuspecting kids… then…," I grew quiet, looking around me as if pretending to see if any were there. Suddenly, I jolted forward in a ‘boo’ type fashion, "…they jump out of the water and use their LONG tentacles to suck onto your face, small sharp teeth latching on!" I kept a straight face, looking at her and then past her and back at her…

…before bursting out in laughter and sat back. After I got myself, I amended. "No, they are creepy though. They have like… green skin and small horns protruding from their head. They do have tentacles and two arms uhh..th- they are called at least 3 other names and are generally only seen in Great Britain and Ireland!" I answered truthfully this time.

I snorted with laughter again and couldn’t resist subtly splashing her feet, not caring if I was at the receiving end of some glare that was probably not intimidating… maybe?

I let out a gasp as the water she had splashed me with landed in my hair. “Not the hair!” I groaned, gently trying to get the invisible water droplets out my hair.
I’m muggle-born by the way,
I froze in my attempts to sort my hair out. I had thought as much. It made a butt load of sense! I wasn’t really grown up that much to care about blood status. Obviously it is important, technically, but it shouldn’t change who you are around them.

"Yeah. I thought you would be Muggle-something," I’m not gonna use an unforgivable curse on you - if I knew any of them - because your parents are muggles," I said with a genuine smile.

I wonder what the Muggle world is really like. What Muggle schools are like. "As for me, well, I’m Pureblood. Both parents are witches an’ wizards. I am pretty sure both my grandparents are as well. I have a squib cousin… but for all I know, we are all magical," I answered.

Muggle-Borns fascinate me sometimes. How can you have two Muggle parents and be magical? Someone in her family, perhaps waaay back, must have been a witch or wizard and from then, the family line were squibs and muggles. Right? Or am I off track?

I shook my head slightly, that was enough of that.

I wonder if she did any reading of Hogwarts before arriving. "I can’t remember if you answered before, with Kim in the train. What house do you desire to be in?" drying my hand on my trousers.

I shuddered at the description of the grindylows. That sounded not-fun to get killed by. "I can't remember if you answered before with Kim on the train. What house do you desire to be in?" Lucian asked. I answered with a slight uncertainty. "I think maybe just Gryffindor or Hufflepuff or something. Not that Ravenclaw or Slytherin are bad houses. I guess I don't really care what house I'm in. It doesn't really matter that much. In my opinion anyway." I said quickly.

I thought of a topic to speak about next, until the boat slowed to a stop and I looked up to see that some kids have gotten out of the boats and were already in the school. "Oh, look!" I said, my head tilted up at the school. I carefully climbed out of the boat, being careful not to fall into the water. I wonder if that's ever happened to anyone before? I made sure Lucian was always in the back of my sight in the least so I wouldn't accidentally leave him behind again. This was new to lots of kids, me included.

We both walked into a large dining hall to be assorted into our rightful houses. I stood in between a cluster of kids, some silent and some chattering like they won't be able to speak again.

"I think you would be an awesome Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor really. Even Ravenclaw!" I praised, laughing a little as she spoke quickly. I didn’t really know what else to say so I watched the other boats as cogs turned in Alice’s head.

"Oh, look!" I heard Alice’s exclaim and snapped out of my daydream. We were here!

As we were getting out the boat, I wobbled a little and prayed I didn’t fall in. Only because I knew how mean kids could be.

We walked together, this time I was pretty much glued to her side as we made our way through. I’m pretty sure I was grinning like a madman as I looked at literally everything.

I am so glad this is my first time at school. No bad experiences to deter me from actual school-like situations and environments.

"This is going to be so fun Ali!" it’s like a switch flipped. I just got… excited. I buzzing, almost literally, and I felt like laughing and running and jumping. My face hurt from how big my grin was… "I hope we are in the same house! I could help you w- with homework if you needed it and- and you could help me with learning about muggles!" I said loudly, for the first time ever not caring when a few people near us stared.

I tried to keep looking straight forward but it fluttered up to the walls or the ceiling every once in a while. "Yeah! And I could do the same for you, too! I'm not a complete idiot, you know. Of course, you could have gotten that impression from the train. But I wouldn't care because I would know the truth. But I also would care a bit because I get the impression that we're friends. I'll stop talking now, I think it's about to start!" I shut my mouth like everyone else began doing.

After what felt like ages of waiting for my name to be called, I had a sudden fear of going up. What if I messed something up? Or did something embarrassing? I was suddenly anxious. The waiting made it worse. If only I could just go up now and get it over with. If only I could just skip it. I could trip over the robes or something. But if I thought of all that could go wrong now, then I can make sure it doesn't happen. This seemed like a good plan. But like all good plans, there's always a con to the pro. The more problems I try to think about, the more that I have to worry about. I stood there, deep in thought.
