One letter... than everything changed.

It was a day like any other, breakfast, classes, the odd conversation, homework, bed. Nothing was planned. No test to plan for, no unfortunate situation to process. The weeks up until now had be relatively boring to say the least. Like life had plateaued, stunted in growth, however else one could explain a lull in time.

One letter later.

Monica wasn't expecting mail. She was never unhappy to receive mail, but it was apparent that her family wasn't warming up to the idea of handwriting a message to hand off to a large bird of pray, in hopes that it reached young Evans. The last owl from home Moni received was short, sweet and mostly about Christmas plans this year. Hardly any question about what she was learning, how Hogwarts was, or any inclination of pride her family had for her being a witch. Most of the magical talk seemed to be shoved under the rug for some sort of reason.

Over the course of Monica's life, she had always felt... different from her family. There was no explanation, some people might have a phrase... 'it runs in my family' that was never something Monica said about her own traits. The more she thought about it growing up, the more she felt vastly different from her family, like she didn't belong, or was a stranger to them. It was a regular conversation she had with her older sister, the life long question, why was Monica so... apart from her family? For years it seemed the question would go un answered, that there was no explanation, that she just received all the odd genes, but the day she got her letter from Hogwarts, and learned about her powers, and the wizarding world, she thought, 'That was it! That was why she was so different!' Knowing this, would surely fix whatever strain she felt in her family..... right?

It was this... one... letter.

On this particular day, with no warning, or special event occurring, Monica received a letter, but it wasn't from her family.... just her sister. She was thrilled when opening it up, excited to feel like she was having her old talks again with Victoria, a past time she longed for since leaving home... but that was not the nature of this letter. What lay sprawled out on the page, written in Victoria's handwriting, was a long kept secret... finally revealed to Monica.

She scanned over the letter once....twice....thrice! Searching for an explanation, the punch line to a joke... only to find none. It was serious... and real.

Monica, having been reading the letter in the Slytherin common room, crumpled it and shoved the thing into her pocket, leaving the room in great haste. With no clear destination in mind, only the lingering feeling of having to escape... get away, running through her mind.

She found herself walking through the halls of the castle. Her world shaken. Passing by people in their perfectly mundane realities, as her own was shattered. The letter burning a hole in her mind. "It could't be real! It mustn’t be." Monica recited in her head.

Her pace quickened, she found herself nearly running through the sea of faces, not picking out who was who, but just having to keep going, faster! She couldn't stop. He legs carried her far away from where she had received the letter, almost as if escaping that area would make the contents disappear...

As she turned a corner, she felt her legs stop, her body falling backwards, and her head throbbing... Was that a wall? She picked herself up, she could now feel the cold liquid running down her face... touching it, she knew it wasn't blood, but tears.

Looking past the obstacle she had just hit, she saw her sanctuary, the lavatories was feet away from her. Without a pause, she rushed in... and as she did she wondered... was that June?

Friday. The promise of from tests and books and essays. Well, except for the essays that were assigned for the weekend. But such things were of no concern for June Selwyn, as she had a practically perfect system of going to the library after her last class of the week and doing all of her assignments for the weekend at once. And maybe reading up on the next week's chapters in her textbooks. And maybe also getting a head start on a few projects that were due a few months down the road.

After the last 'i' of her weekend assignments had been dotted, June decided she was allowed to take the rest of the evening off. Besides, she was already a couple of weeks ahead in the curriculum for her classes (except for potions, the darned subject), it wouldn't kill her to relax a bit. June packed her belongings into her bag and headed back to the depths of the castle, to her dorm room.

The dynamic in her dorm was quite different this year. For starters, she only had one roommate, and he wasn't particularly interested in giving June makeovers or chopping off her signature plaits. No, Leonard Wendell Oaksworth was, so far, an ideal roommate for June. Quiet, intentional, neat, and owner of June's favourite reptile, Merlin. June headed down the corridors, running a list in her mind of things she had to do that evening.

Feed Lars, tidy up my bag, double-check with Maggie that-

WHAM!

Just as June turned a corner, someone (hopefully someone and not something) had slammed right into her. June stumbled backwards, her hand to her nose that had been whacked pretty well by... June looked down and saw Monica Evans across from her (oh good, it was a someone), sprawled out on the floor. And she was crying. Hard. Monica sprinted past June and bolted into the lavatory, her face drenched with tears. June picked up her back which she'd dropped in the impact and calmly followed in pursuit of Monica.

Sorry, Lars, but you're going to have to wait a bit before dinner
