The new school year seemed very promising to the brunette and she couldn't wait to be back at the magical castle and learn even more spells and potions. With every passing year, the muggle-born felt more at home in the wizarding world and became more knowledgeable about it. Hopefully, one day she would be able to become the minister of magic but for now, the ambitious girl would have to settle for prefect, which duties she took very seriously.

To make sure the poor first years weren't traumatized before they even set foot on the Hogwarts grounds, she had begged her parents to drop her off at the platform an hour early so she could prevent any unnecessary drama. After way too many emotional hugs and goodbye's from her family, she finally got on the train with her suitcase and an empty cage in her hands. The little brown owl, who the cage was meant for, was sitting on the girl's right shoulder, as she carried her things to the special prefects' carriage.

All the prefects were supposed to meet in the carriage in the front of the train before they would start to patrol the corridors of the Hogwarts Express. The corridors were still pretty empty, which made sense as not a lot of students showed up this early, and Samantha easily made her way over to the compartment. In case there would already be a prefect in the carriage, the brunette would wave at them with a big smile and greet them before placing her things away.

"Hi! How are you?" she would greet almost everybody like they were old friends. "How was your summer break?" Hers had been absolutely amazing and she couldn't wait to tell everybody about it, forcing them to listen to her rambling about how she became friends with the biggest idiot in school. Most of her summer she had spent with Elsian, which had been very unexpected but also a lot of fun, and the other part she had spent surrounded by all the muggle things she didn't have at school, like her phone or the tv.

While waiting for all the other prefects to arrive, the brunette played with her hair which she had decided to let down instead of putting in her usual low ponytail. Her sister had always told her that her hair looked the best down and where Samantha hadn't cared about looking pretty before, she now wanted to impress somebody. Just before summer break, the girl had fallen head over heals for Bubba and she hoped she would see him during her patrols in the train so she could talk with him without having their interaction resulting in detention for him.

I never thought I'd do this but here is Bubba's outfit:

It had certainly not been a wonderful morning for Bubba. He'd woken up at the crack of dawn to finish packing all of his things. His plan was to leave camp and set out as early as possible and try to beat the heat as he and everyone else walked to King's Cross to catch the Hogwarts Express. This had pretty much not happened at all. While he was able to find all of his things and pack them away properly, Kalle was nowhere to be found. It had taken a solid half hour of looking all over the place before he found the cat loitering around what had been the Durmstrang tent. "And where the hell have you been?" He asked exasperatedly. The Siamese cat had shot him a dirty look but allowed him to scoop him up and carry him back to the Conspira-Sea tent. He packed the cat in his basket and put his basket on top of the trunk. He really wished he could just Wingardium Leviosa his trunk and hover it in front of him as he walked. Stupid International Statute of Secrecy.

Bubba finished getting dressed and bade a hasty goodbye to his tent mates. He was certainly overdressed for the trip but he wanted to make a good impression on the other Prefects when he arrived. It had come as quite a shock to him when his normal owl listing all of his school supplies had come with a second letter inside. This one was from Marcus Iwasaki, the Head of Ravenclaw House, explaining to him that he had been chosen as the new Ravenclaw Prefect. He had been well and truly shocked. He didn't think he'd done much to distinguish himself in his first year, hell he'd landed himself in detention at the end of the year, but he was determined to show his Head of House that their faith in him had not been misplaced.

So he had decided (most inadvisedly) to off-white pants (which was a rarity for him, after all, white pants were so hard to keep clean), a plain white t-shirt, and a cobalt blue blazer. It wasn't too fancy (it was just the school train), but for him at least, it was smart and he always tried to look his best, no matter the occasion. He was of course, as always, wearing his ruby slippers. The brightest thing in his ensemble, however, was the shiny Prefect's Badge he'd pinned to the left lapel of his jacket. He had almost certainly spent far too much time polishing it the night before, but he couldn't help it. He had to admit he was very proud to have received it and treated it with a certain degree of reverence. To top it all off, he had on his black Ray-Bans and had made sure there wasn't a hair out of place before he left.

Then there was the trek from the stadium to the station itself. The trunk itself was heavy and Kalle's basket kept sliding around on the top. Kalle was definitely not happy about it, in fact, he had been extremely vocal in his displeasure. After what felt like it could've been forty years wandering the desert, Bubba finally arrived at King's Cross, drenched in sweat. He grabbed the first trolley he found and put the trunk and Kalle's basket down on it. Relieved of the burden he quickly set off into the station itself. He made a beeline for the barrier between platforms nine and ten and, with much more confidence this year, pushed his trolly into the barrier.

A moment later he was through, and still very early. There were a few people there but the platform was largely deserted. He wheeled the trolley over and heaved his trunk onto the train, followed by Kalle's basket a moment later. As soon as he was on he opened the basket to let Kalle get out and walk around. Kalle was slow to check out his new surroundings, preferring to sit by Bubba's side. He picked up his trunk (with the now empty basket still on top) and walked up to the door of the Prefect's Compartment. He set his trunk down and waited, it was probably five minutes, to cool off and compose himself. He checked his reflection in the window. He was finally cooled down and much less sweaty. His clothes appeared to have survived the trip without getting dirty (an achievement considering the amount of white he was wearing). He pulled a comb out of his back pocket and fixed his hair so that it was immaculate once more.

Finally, he could stall no more. He picked up his trunk and opened the door. "Good morning, everyone," he said as he walked in. He immediately saw Samantha, the Prefect who had thrown him in detention last year. He was over it and smiled warmly at her. He turned and stowed his trunk and the basket on one of the racks and sat down across from Sam. He took his Ray-Bans off and folded them, hanging them from the inside breast pocket of his coat.

While he had been sorting himself out, Kalle had followed him into the compartment before he'd closed the door and was slowly walking over to Samantha, looking at her and sniffing her as if he were appraising her.

Logan was exhausted and she had not even made it to Hogwarts yet. The morning had started with her brothers waking up at five, they had turned eleven back in February and could finally start at Hogwarts this year and had spent the morning bothering their older sister about what extra they should take with them and how excited they were. After having finally settled the two boys, the fourth year had made sure she had everything packed up before eating breakfast and leaving to go and say goodbye to the horses. It would be a while until she was able to see them again and was actually kind of sad to have to not see them for a few months. Finally, after a long morning of preparations, Logan and the boys were ready and headed to Kings Cross Station.

"Bye Aunt Hannah, Bye Father," Logan called out to both her father and aunt as she ushered her brothers onto the train. Yes, it was early and almost no one was there. No, Logan did not care and continued to find her brothers and empty compartment and tell them to behave. She gave them a list of things to do and insisted that they followed instructions because she would hear about it if they got in trouble. "Good luck at the sorting ceremony and I will see you later," she told the boys with a soft smile on her face as she gave them both a quick kiss on the forehead, which both boys complained about, before leaving them to settle in.

"Let's go Sherlock," the Scottish girl called out to her cat gently as she made her way down the corridors of the train. Normally the cat would be perched on her shoulders, but with all of her movements he had decided to trot along beside her instead of getting jostled around. As the strange pair made their way to the Prefects compartment, Logan would occasionally looked into the compartments, waving at scared first years and anyone she recognized as she went. The Hufflepuff wore her robes, pressed perfectly by her aunt before they left so there were no wrinkles, over a white collared shirt and black dress pants. Her prefect badge was pinned to her robes, visible but not something the girl was really interested in showing off.

"Hello hello," Logan greeted as she stepped into the Prefects compartment, Sherlock close on her heals as to not get lost. She slowly put away her trunk and extra items, brushing off imaginary dust from her robes when she was. Normally the girl was rather quiet, but having spent the summer getting to know more people she decided she was going to make new friends this year. "Summer was great, how was yours Samantha?" Logan questioned with a grin on her face as she gently sat down in an empty spot, her Egyptian Mau gently jumping onto her lap before crawling onto her shoulders while ignoring the other cat present in the compartment. Looking at the other prefect present, she smiled. "I am Logan, it is nice to meet you," the girl greeted with the smile on her face.

Uniform and prefect badge
When Bubba entered the prefects' compartment in a spotless outfit, Samantha's eyes widened in surprise because she hadn't expected to see the boy that soon. Her hands immediately removed the imaginary crease from her school uniform before quickly brushing through her hair. After all, she didn't want to look like a hag around her crush. Cheeks quickly turning red from Bubba's warm smile, she was unable to say anything back as the ability to speak seemed to have left her body.

Only when Bubba sat down was the brunette able to gather her thoughts and say something. "Hi," she greeted him as she nervously tucked her hair behind her ear. Should she ask him how he was doing? Maybe it was better to ask him about his summer. Wait, what was he even doing here? Was he prefect now too? As thousands of questions popped up in Samantha's mind, she looked up at Bubba with a nervous little smile. "Are you prefect too?" she stammered.

Suddenly extremely self-aware, the girl doubted her every move, even simple things like what to do with her hands. It took her a while to notice the cat that had entered the compartment with Bubba as she had been so focused on the latter. Even though her dislike of animals had significantly decreased over the past year, she still wasn't the biggest fan of cats and just looked at the cat awkwardly as he judged her.

Luckily, the awkward feeling partly faded away when Logan, a familiar face with who she had spent a big part of her summer, entered the compartment and greeted her. "Hi Logan," she said back with a little smile. "My summer was great too! You already know of the summer games with Elsian but I was also able to see my grandparents again. We went to them on my birthday and it was lots of fun," she told happily.

Now that her focus wasn't only on Bubba, the young girl felt a lot less nervous and her talkative side seemed to surface again. The fact that she shared a compartment with Bubba was amazing since it would be a lot easier to talk with him now than having to search for him on the train. As Logan introduced herself to Bubba, the brunette spotted the second cat in the room and started to worry a bit about her own pet.

She quickly turned her attention to the brown little owl which was sitting on her shoulder and let him step on her hand. For Amenadiel's own safety she placed the little creature in his cage and closed it before placing it away from the cats. There weren't many cats that would hurt the small bird but Samantha was rather safe than sorry and only trusted the cat of Eun-ji to be around her owl. The two pets were actually really good buddies and loved spending time together, very different from the relationships their owners now had.

Emma was feeling slightly off-kilter. She had mostly had her things packed, but then had to do a last minute removal to triple check that she had everything. The twins had thrown a fit about her returning to the school, mainly Emma thought because there had been no signs of magic from either and they so badly wanted to go. Emma had watched the clock anxiously, biting her lip and doing her best not to explode when her parents took the time to soothe the twins before heading to King’s Cross. Thankfully she had said goodbye to her grandparents the night before so that was one last thing to hold them up. Emma blinked tears away as she remembered the awful feeling of leaving her family once more. She had enjoyed the summer at home, minus the summer camp, then returned home for a short visit before heading back to school.

Getting onto the platform had been nothing after last year, and now that she felt more familiar with the ways of the magical world, though she had felt bad about running a bit enthusiastically at the wall and almost knocking poor Owlbert over. But thankfully the platform hadn’t yet begun to get super crowded so she had avoided disaster there. After saying goodbye and giving out hugs and kisses to her parents and the twins, Emma had taken a breath, grabbing her badge from the top of her trunk and placing it carefully on her chest.

She had heard that the prefects would gather at the front of the train, and so she made her way there, carefully maneuvering her things, before grabbing boarding the train and heading to what she believed was the correct compartment. She hadn’t yet changed into her uniform, figuring from last year that she would do so closer to the school.

Taking a breath just outside and to the side of the door to the compartment, Emma let it out in a sigh, walking carefully inside. Taking a quick peek around from behind her hair, Emma was happy that she knew at least one person who was already here. Waving with her free hand, she said “Hi Logan! I hope your summer was well.”

Looking around awkwardly, Emma waited until the other had finished their words, before saying “I’m Emma, not sure I’ve met everyone and honestly I’m pretty awful at names to faces so if I did, I’m sorry.” Emma rambled a bit, then turned to place Owlbert’s cage up above as her arm was getting a bit sore. “Did everyone join the summer camp? I think it went quite well, there was lots to do! What were your favorite games?” Emma had no idea where these words were coming from and she just kept talking.

Bubba was... would it be amused, bemused, or cemused? Let's just go with amused, that Samantha appeared to be as awkward as ever around him. He had not seen her since the ridiculous detention she'd put him in. Why was she so damn nervous around him? He was just standing there, getting himself together and she looked like someone who'd just met a pop star they'd idolized. It was so... the only word for it was bizarre. "Yes..." Bubba answered as he reflexively looked at the badge on his chest, as he still wasn't used to it being there, looking back up he continued, "I guess someone, in their infinite wisdom, decided that I was a shining example for the rest of our house to look up to..." He said with a bemused shrug, "Don't worry I have no idea what they were thinking either."

As they settled into a not quite comfortable silence, given the way Samantha was acting now that he was in the carriage, Bubba quietly contemplated once again why he was there. Not in the existential sense but why on earth had they made him a prefect. It can't have just been for his grades, that's not a real example. Certainly not for his conduct, he wasn't a serial miscreant but he'd been in detention and was definitely a bit of a troublemaker. He didn't have a chance to ponder this for long because another person had just entered the compartment.

He'd seen the new arrival around the grounds before but didn't know her. He could tell by her perfectly pressed robes that she was a prefect of Hufflepuff. And she also had a cat, but Kalle had no interest in the new cat or person, he was still tentatively eyeing Samantha. It looked like he was sizing her up which was odd, he normally didn't pay that much attention to new people. Bubba turned to look at the girl as she sat down and introduced herself as Logan. Bubba returned her smile and replied with his Boston-light accent, "Nice to meet you, Logan, I'm Bubba." He said reaching out and offering his hand to shake.

Just as he'd finished talking another Hufflepuff prefect came in. Bubba wasn't sure but he thought he recalled her name being Emma. This was confirmed a moment later when she introduced herself, "Bubba," was all he could say in reply as she just kept talking, which was fine, he wondered if she was a bit nervy as she appeared to be speed talking. "My summer camp... let's say it had its ups and downs. I enjoyed Truth or Dare but I had a genuinely terrible time at Twirl the Flagon, no fun at all. Still, a positive experience overall."

As he finished talking Bubba noticed that Kalle had finally finished checking Samantha out. Apparently, Kalle decided that Samantha was ok because he jumped up in her lap and curled up in a ball. "He's not bothering you is he?" Bubba asked, conscious of the fact that he didn't know if Samantha liked or was allergic to cats. "That's a bit out of character for him, he normally doesn't approach people so soon."
