MEET THE HEXWIZARD TEAMS ────────────────────────────────── by Dealla Prince With the first task of the Hexwizard Tournament right around the corner, it’s high time to scoop out the competition some more… I mean, inform our dear readers about what they can expect to see from the different schools. ────────────────────────── As a short recap for those who have been asleep for the past six months: for reasons not well explained and yet somehow not questioned, the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, in cooperation with several other wizard governments and schools around the world, has decided to bring back the infamous Triwizard Tournament… with slight alterations. The first major change is that rather than involving just the three European magic schools, we now have guests from even further away; joining Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang we have Ilvermorny, Koldovstoretz, and Mahoutokoro, to make up a total of six contestants, as the observant reader might have guessed from the name. ──────────────────────────────────

The second big difference to how things used to be done is that rather than just focusing on one champion representing each school, these champions now get to choose a team to support them. Seven peers of their choice, to balance out their weaknesses and support their strengths. The tournament will be ─────────────────

a contest not just of individuals, but to see who managed to gather the best team around them. Hence, while my previous article on the matter introduced us all to the six Champions, this one will give us a short insight into those students the champions chose, and why they chose them. ─────────────────

Hogwarts The Hogwarts Hexwizard team sports one of the highest year averages of all schools - discounting Durmstrang, of course, who start their education a year earlier than everyone else. With three Broomracers, four Duellists, and a Champion who is a Quidditch player, they mostly seem to favour speed and wit over brawn. How well this will play out in tasks that may well require physical strength will remain to be seen. We’ve seen Howard’s profile, now let’s meet his team.

Ilvermorny Ilvermorny Champion Miles Thatcher’s chosen team has students from a variety of years, but they share a very obvious common factor: Miles has mostly chosen from among his sports team. Out of seven members, five play Quidditch, although at least all positions are represented which might bode better for the balance of this team than it might seem at first glance. The remaining two members are Broomracers; not a single Duellist is present on this team. It makes for an athletic group, but not the most magically powerful.

Durmstrang Durmstrang’s champion is a loud one, who likes to threaten and impose, often relying on physical presence to make his point. His team is mostly made up of Quidditch players, although he also sports two Broomracers and a Duellist. They mostly seem to be around Yefim’s own age, which suggests he might simply have chosen friends rather than pick those that best complement his skills - but perhaps both are true, and existing friendships might boost their team dynamics. Between age and skills, this team is not to be underestimated.

Beauxbatons Beauxbatons has recently seen a small shake-up, with former champion Angélique de Clairmont handing off the post to Cassanora Browne. The two girls are the same age, and it’s quite possible that some of the team has been selected before Cassanora took the reins. Either way, with two Broomracers, two Duellists, and three Quidditch players, it seems to be one of the more diverse teams in the tournament. It also sports a variety of ages, and on first glance, the members seem to complement each other well. Their strength might not be as obvious, but they might make a strong contestant.

But he's quick on his feet and what he clearly lacks in muscle, he more than makes up in his magical prowess and a deadly accuracy to wield it. Roberta is one of the most driven people I've ever met. When she sets a goal for herself, you'll soon see her meet it. But he's trickier than you'd expect. Don't put it past him to do just about anything to get what he wants... and I mean, anything. He has a gentle soul and will generally be quiet. But he has a good head resting on his shoulders, though he is a bit prone to daydreaming…. He blends in with a crowd, and is a very proficient socialite and conversationalist. Milo has both strength and speed to his advantage. What he isn't able to dodge, he'll just absorb and press on. I'm glad I never have to face him in a Quidditch match. Mahoutokoro Mahoutokoro’s champion, Aryaan Shamsi, is the youngest contestant, and that trend extends to his team. While there are two members that are a little older, the rest of the team is Aryaan’s own age. Strategic choice or simply his friends remains to be seen. The team is a little biased towards Quidditch players, but also sports Duellists and a Broomracer, and, intriguingly, one member I could not find anything about. The champion kept their name to themselves - a secret weapon, perhaps?

Koldovstoretz Koldovstoretz’s champion Rodion Makarovich is also on the younger side, which shows in his team. With three second years and the oldest member attending her fifth year at the school, Rodion’s team is the second youngest in the tournament. It features a rather even mix of all sports teams, with two representatives of each of the three official sports, and one as-of-yet unannounced mystery member, although in this case not due to a conscious choice from the champion, but rather an unforeseen interruption of the interview. Whether their balance and skill variety will enable them to hold their own against other teams will remain to be seen.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31, is a holiday that originated in the Gaelic festival of Samhain and Celtic harvest celebrations. Samhain is a festival that celebrates the harvest but also marks the beginning of winter. It was widely celebrated in the British Isles until, after the Christian Church grew in Europe, it syncretised with All Saints Day and All Souls Day to become Halloween. It is still celebrated now, but Halloween is more widely known.

Halloween is traditionally celebrated during the evening, when children dress up as ghouls (or perhaps just a fun costume) and ‘trick or treat’ at their neighbours’ homes. Generally, kids are now given treats rather than tricks, but the occasional trick still takes place. Often, sweets are the ‘treats’ children receive, although on occasion they are given cider or toys. Another common Halloween tradition is the haunted house, where actors dress up as scary creatures and scare people who wander through the building, usually paying to do so. While haunted houses aren’t for the faint of heart, they bring a bit of thrill to Halloween and are popular among teenagers and adults. Some look like normal houses, some are in huge buildings, and others might be in trailers or buses. ───────────────────────────	xx	Horror films – moving pictures that have sound, used as Muggle entertainment – are also a common Halloween tradition. Some prolific ones include Friday the 13th, Scream, It and Nightmare on Elm Street. These films are generally scary and filled with gore, and sometimes they end well (but often, they don’t). Some are scarier psychologically while others are more disgusting. Nonetheless, people watch these mostly for the thrill or for the tradition. Often, teenagers set up Halloween parties, which might have a spooky theme or might just be an opportunity to have a good time. They might hand out sweets to children in the neighbourhood, or they might watch scary movies all night. Adults might get in on the fun and watch a film or two, or they might have snacks. Parties are usually fun, and the spooky theme of Halloween parties usually adds to the enjoyment. ───────────────────────────

There are many things people do on Halloween, and it’s a holiday that is absolutely wonderful to celebrate. Not only is its celebration fun, but it can also be an excuse for consuming an unholy amount of sweets or staying up all night. It’s coming up very soon, at the end of the month, and with it should come cooler weather and the crisp breezes of autumn.

There comes a time in every young witch or wizard’s life when they question their ability to survive Hogwarts. The days of the Dark Lord and his band of Death Eaters that our parents may have faced may be long gone, but it is a truth universally acknowledged by any second-year or above that we are not truly safe. Danger appears to be crawling around every corner. And yet, this may truly be the safest place in the country for us. Isn't that rather ironic? A visit to Hogsmeade can easily turn sour when you think about the ─────────────────────	xx	incidents that have occurred there in the not-so-recent past. Adults are not much safer, nor are the muggle cities. In truth, we may be in the safest place physically, but what about mentally? If there is anything that I have ─────────────────────	xx	learned over the last five years at Hogwarts, it is that self-care is incredibly important. Self-care is, quite literally, the act of taking care of oneself. In truth, it is also quite hard to do sometimes. I, at the very least, sometimes feel selfish for putting myself first or feel like I do not have the time to do this. However, there are many quotes that muggles have used about self-care. “Self-care is not selfish”, for example. I have first-hand experience of struggling to take care of myself and my mental health.

Hogwarts is not just about the big events – the fire, the shadows, the hags. There are so many tiny things that might affect us on a daily basis: issues with friends, keeping up with the homework, failing to cast a spell that you should know, losing a game of duelling/quidditch/broom racing/gobstones/chess	xx	or whatever you are into, being owled with family drama, or even just trying to find your way around the castle. These are just a few of the many ideas that you could do. Of course, some require permission – from professors, for instance, if you decide to try them during term time. However, there are plenty of ideas here and if this inspires something else that you enjoy, that is completely fine too. The whole idea is to relax and take care of your mental health. Taking some time for yourself is not selfish at all and you deserve it. You need to put yourself as a priority. Sometimes that means keeping away from the toxic people in your life, but other times, it means	xx	just taking a few moments to do something relaxing or fun for yourself. Club Reports: Whoops, Broke the First Rule

Most of the clubs I have reviewed so far, different as they were, had one thing in common: magic, in some form. It makes sense; we attend a school of wizards, one with a horde of eleven year olds equipped with wands and the knowledge to set each other on fire. Yet three students at this school decided to take a conscious step away from this common denominator, founding a club to ask an interesting question: What if we’re in a situation where we have to manage without magic? Flash Holmwood and Xailah Alptraum were the ones who came up with this idea, with Alan Vanes joining them to provide help and advice. Their goal: prepare students for danger, expected or unexpected, and give them the tools to defend themselves when their wands might be out of reach. Make magic just another weapon at their disposal, rather than the only way to stand their ground. The three were kind enough to answer a few of my questions.

Dee: Who of you will be teaching those self-defence techniques, and how did you learn them?

Flash: I'll admit, we aren't exactly experts. Most of what I know I've learned from books and then tried myself. The idea is that it’s mostly basics and fundamentals, along with practice.

Xailah: Yes, we are still learning proper techniques ourselves. The teaching is a shared effort between Flash and I. Alan is here to help oversee, and make sure nothing goes too far. As for my knowledge of the subject, I've had tutors before and I've read a few books. I've also learnt a bit from watching our peers brawl. However, I'm afraid most of my knowledge of self-defence techniques– if you would like to call them that– has come from my time here at Hogwarts; due to several experiences with unfortunate events.

Alan: As Xailah said, I am mostly here to oversee the activities and rules, as I am concerned about proper technique and things not getting out of hand. Personally I don't have much experience in self-defence, but I am curious to learn some of it, and I think that is the main goal of this club.

Dee: Do you think non-magical defence techniques will really stand a chance against magic-wielding opponents – human or otherwise?

Alan: I don't think it would hurt to know some basic self-defence techniques. Not all foes we'll face will make use of magic and we won't always be in a position where magic will be an option for us. You can take someone's wand but not their knowledge on self-defence. This club will teach things that can help you feel safer in everyday life and tricky situations.

Flash: It's not about whether you can fight a magic user, it's about having more tools at your disposal. Versatility will make you more unpredictable, and more able to adapt to unique situations. In that way, I think it will give people an advantage.

Xailah: Think? I know they will and do stand a chance. Trust me. More often than not they are far more effective than a magical attack. I invite you to come join one of our meetings if you have doubts.

Perhaps they’re right, perhaps we rely a bit too much on magic. There are advantages to knowing how to handle yourself, especially if you tend to choose fight over flight. After all, disarm a duellist, and they might well be helpless. Disarm someone from the Self-Defense Club… they might punch you in the face. Even if you don’t expect a fight, as Xailah so eloquently put it, “a little extra knowledge never hurt anyone... too badly.”

Muggles And Their Modern Ways of Communication

But before we dive into it, I want to say a massive thank you to Dorion (Willow) Anderson, who was a big part of the Headliner staff, for bringing Muggle Items of the Month to life and being a massive hit on every issue of the Headliner we had ever published. Did you wonder what a pureblood kid knows about Muggle pop culture and society? Well, to be honest, I only had a bit of knowledge about it, but fret not! Since I’m planning to take over Dorion’s mantle, I spent hours and hours researching so I can deliver it as accurately as possible. Now, Muggle-borns and Muggles have their own ways of communication that are different from us who are in the Wizarding world. Some say they are more modern than us since they have their cellphones and social media. ───────────────────────────	xx	What is a cellphone? Well, I think we can return back to that topic sometime in the future. But now I want to talk to you all about what they call social media. A little info on what social media is. Social medias are "interactive technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks." Now, imagine if you want to send an owl to your long-distance best friend/boyfriend/girlfriend. If you have social media at your fingertips, all you have to do is just call them and in an instant, you can see their face in real-time. That's what I mean by another kind of magic. For this issue, I interviewed a lot of Muggle-borns so I can deliver this piece as authentically as I possibly can. I asked them about what social media is trending right now. Some say it is Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the most famous and recent one is TikTok. ───────────────────────────

	xx	Let’s discover it one by one, and hopefully I won't run out of space to write all of it. We start with Facebook. If you are thinking, is it a book that has a face? Well, at first I thought it was like that too, but upon deeper research, Facebook is some kind of social media that was started by a young lad (at that time) named Mark Zuckerberg with his other four fellow Harvard College mates. ─────────────────	xx	Founded in 2004, membership was limited to Harvard students, gradually expanding to other North American universities. And since 2006, anyone over 13 years old can make an account there. To put it simply, Facebook is like a digital yearbook where you can post your picture of whatever your heart contains and the memories that entail. ─────────────────

We now move to the next example: Instagram. When I asked whether Instagram had any shortened names or perhaps an abbreviation for it, some of your fellow Muggle-borns told me Instagram can be shortened into Insta or IG. What is Instagram? Instagram is an American photo and video sharing social networking service founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and later acquired by American company Facebook Inc., ─────────────────	xx		xx	now known as Meta Platforms. The app allows users to upload media that can be edited with filters and organized by hashtags and geographical tagging. Posts can be shared publicly or with preapproved followers. Users can browse other users' content by tag and location, view trending content, like photos, and follow other users to add their content to a personal feed. ─────────────────

If you are confused about this thing, don’t come knocking on the Headliner’s door. Just ask your Muggle-borns best friends/boyfriend/girlfriend or perhaps someone who is secretly savvy when it comes down to all the things related to social media.

Third on the list is Twitter. Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and launched in July of that year. Twitter, Inc. is an American communications company based in San Francisco, California. The company operates the microblogging and social networking service Twitter. For those of you who like to keep your journal safe and out of prying eyes, perhaps this is the solution you have been looking for. Twitter provides us the ability to write 140 characters in every single tweet. ─────────────────	xx	Twitter is like your trusted journal but the twist is, it is a digital one. Now, I want to bore you a bit with the statistics that I found. According to the research that I managed to get my hands on, Twitter, by 2012, had more than 100 million users posting 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. The company went public in November 2013. By the start of 2019, Twitter had more than 330 million monthly active users. I am not much of a numbers or statistics kind of person but from that number, I can say that was pretty impressive to me! ─────────────────	xx

Last but not least, TikTok. I don’t know why that social media name reminds me of what a clock sounds like. TikTok has nothing to do with the clock, though they have some seconds or even minutes in it. When I ask what TikTok is all about some of your peers said it is about daily life and/or dance challenges. TikTok, known ─────────────	xx		xx	in China as Douyin (Chinese: 抖音; pinyin: Dǒuyīn), is a short-form video hosting service owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. It hosts a variety of short-form user videos, from genres like pranks, stunts, tricks, jokes, dance, and entertainment with durations from 15 seconds to ten minutes. TikTok is an international ─────────────	xx	version of Douyin, which was originally released in the Chinese market in September 2016. TikTok was launched in 2017 for iOS and Android (some muggle phone operating systems) in most markets outside of mainland China; however, it became available worldwide only after merging with another Chinese social media service, Musical.ly, on 2 August 2018. ─────────────

Writing this article helped to teach me a lot about Muggle-borns, Muggles, their ways of communicating, and how various their social media are.
