Spectator Thread

The ballroom had changed over the past several days, the doors locked and only the house elves were allowed ingress. During this time, benches more resembling of scaffolding were erected around the perimeter of the ballroom. Silver and black streamers were hung from the ceiling and glittering black and white confetti seemed to flitter from the ceiling but never touch the ground. In the center of the ballroom, the open area that was formerly used for dancing now had three checkered boards placed on the floor like sturdy platforms.

Yes, the three matches would be ongoing simultaneously.

Perhaps the intention was the save time, allow all three to transpire simultaneously. Perhaps the intention was to keep things interesting because chess was not known as an action-packed sport although that misconception might vanish by the conclusion of this First Task. Or, the most likely reason -- the narrator only wanted one spectator thread to moderate (hint: the answer is this.)

On game day, the stands were not filled with just Professors and students. Representatives of the media, of the UK Ministry of Magic (MOM), of the varied governing magical bodies abroad such as the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) and the Japanese and French Ministry of Magic and the Magical Duma of the Russian Federation. When the students of Hogwarts entered the ballroom which opened to the student body about an hour before the event, they would find that it was standing room only in the scaffolding around the perimeter of the ballroom.

There was an announcer standing among the three platforms in a heated discussion between himself and three wizards who were also not immediately recognizable. There was a debate between the three of them that even the most curious would not be able to overhear.

About fifteen minutes before the event, a disruption on the far right of the ball in the scaffold stands would result in a rather stout part-goblin being dragged out of the venue by a quartet of house elves. "I have every right to be here! Let go of me, I can walk myself out. You're going to regret this!" What he cried but his protests would fall on deaf ears as he was dragged out of the ballroom.

At 12:00, the doors of the ballroom would close and a bar would be lowered across the pair of massive doors. A jaunty tune would start to play, not that there were minstrels, the enchanted instruments would play the melody on their own.

Vendors would start to scale the sides of the scaffolding, calling out "Butterbeer! Get your butterbeer! By the mug. By the pint. Get your butterbeer!" Vendors were also selling noisemakers, whistles, and confetti poppers. There were sales of snacks, primarily hotdogs, hamburgers and popcorn. Everything was priced absorbently. The highest priced item in the shop was T shirts being sold with the likeness of the school's champions:

The images appeared to have been stolen from images posted in their respective school papers or even the Daily Prophet. The quality was not always the best, neither was the image itself. the back of the shirts would name their school and announce proudly their school pride.

The T shirts were a favorite of many adults and students alike. Some to display their school or country's pride, some to deface the image or name displayed. [Yes, we are really selling T shirts in the shop in this forum area.]

At 12:15, the doors would open. The six teams: Hogwarts, Koldovstoretz, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, Ilvermorny and Mahoutokoro would be welcomed with a polite applause that quickly quickly crescendo into a deafening roar. There were no designated cheering areas for the various countries of interest, although the students would find themselves corralled onto the topmost levels of the scaffolding with a birds eye view of the event below.

The champions were followed by their "special person" and then the rest of their allies, starting with Hogwarts (black), then Koldovstoretz (white). They were playing on the board to the far right. Beauxbatons (black), then Durmstrang (white) would be next. They were playing the middle board and quite possibly enjoying being the 'center' of attention. Finally Mahoutokoro would make their way into the ballroom. The crowd had not exhausted itself yet cheering for the previous quartet of schools. There was some strange activity associated with this school also. Their Champion was the youngest out of all of the champions, perhaps the youngest in history. The opportunity was also publicly and promptly forfeited by the chosen Champion, Mathias Pride. A foreigner that had no real right to represent Mahoutokoro in the first place according to well -most- sources. It was in rightful, yet young hands and many members of the Asian magical community complained that the choice to give the reigns to Aryaan Shamsi was a ploy to weaken their potential team.

Aryaan Shamsi would be followed by his special person, Hiro Bakugo (played by @Kim Sato). After this duo was a procession of Mahoutokoro students.

The crowd would cheer as their names were called and the group would be motioned towards the board on the far right and they were playing black.

After Mahoutokoro would come Ilvermorny, a gregarious school that also seemed to like to make an appearance even if that was primarily proven by their meddlesome Headmaster Lazarus Plott. The Headmaster was not a popular man in the magical community, his intentions questionable and there was a rather uncomfortable moment between Solomon Lear and the American Headmaster as Professor Plott shot of a green sparks from the end of his wand as if it was a roman candle.

Their champion by comparison was rather muted, Miles Thatcher that is. He would be followed by his special person Olive Adair (played by @Sienna Lenoir)

The crowd would cheer, a few American flags would even be waved as well as the sparse Canadian Maple Leaf. Team Ilvermorny would be pointed towards the white side of the board. Game on. This was a game that everyone was going to be watching.

Christopher quietly ambled into the Hogwarts ballroom, although he really wouldn't call it a ballroom anymore. It was an impressive sight if you were into that sort of thing. Stands full of people, three separate chessboards for the games to be played simultaneously. He wasn't a big fan of that. Chess required logic and strategy, things that weren't really possible in the mayhem that was sure to ensue with three games being played at once. He was surprised by the number of adults in the audience. He had expected mostly students and teachers. Well, it was a big deal, after all. He didn't quite care about the outcome but everyone else here did. This was an interesting exercise for him. He wanted to win, he always wanted to win, but this trip to the west was more about finding more followers to add to his flock.

As he walked in he saw Aryaan standing next to the Mahoukotoro bench and walked stoicly over to it. He didn't want to betray any emotions, not that that was difficult, he often didn't feel any emotions. He could feel the excited energy radiating off from the crowd but he couldn't feed off of it. He simply didn't feel such things. He sat down on the bench and watched the other people walking in, waiting for everything to start.

Little Andy entered the ballroom, not knowing what to expect. He knew he was just a waitlisted member, so he just had to sit on the bench, watch the players participate in the races, and cheer for Ilvermorny. It seemed simple, but he could not help to question if he would never get a chance to compete the Hexwizard tournament. Maybe, maybe not. Hopefully he would, but he also hoped none of his Ilvermorny teammates would get hurt from the race. It was definitely dangerous to play, but hopefully the risk would be minimized after that tragic Triwizard tournament in the 90s. Anyway, Andy entered the ball room, sat on the bench, and begin to wait his teammates to come so that he could cheer for them. He really hoped Ilvermorny would win this round, hopefully with the strategy the champion Miles came up with.

Nick entered the hogwarts ballroom for the first time ever. This was for the hexwizard tournament which he was on the second string for. That just meant he would go in if someone chickened out or if they had had to go out. Even though he wasn't playing he had this pit in his stomach. He was scared. In all honesty he hoped he didn't have to go in at least not yet, he wanted to see how things would go first. Nick walked over to the bench and sat down. waiting for it to begin.

Being called by your own name means different things for people. Most entirely dependent on situations, obviously. At times, it’s a way to let others know the glorious things you did. A left mark on history records for generations to come. Tender admiration for your deeds. The cheering he received from the stands would have suggested that this was just that. Glory. Making History. Admiration.

And what did he felt?

Anything but all that. That’s for sure.

You couldn’t see it on his face, as he had the natural tendency to look the opposite of what he felt. Even when he was shaking in his boots, his back was straight and his gaze unwavering. As the happiest boy alive, he would look like someone who had his diary stolen. This day was no exception. He joined the fray with his usual intimidating stance, looking as cheery as persian cat. Occasionally, those nearby him could mutter odd names under his breath. Berry. Marshmallow. Mr Snuggyboo. Oyen.

Those who knew him well enough could assume he was muttering the names of the cats back in his hometown. And it was correct. A majority others? They could think whatever they want. Though from his fierce gaze, perhaps he was naming his arch nemesis. Those who have wronged him in his life that made him the 'delinquent' he was today.

Olive followed Miles into the ballroom cautiously. She had little idea as to what to expect from the tournament or what being Miles's "special person" entailed. For now, she would be content to sit on the bench while the tournament started and she could better find her footing, as it were.

While she took her place on the bench with the other special people and waitlisted members of the respective teams, she noticed two others from her school. She would smile and nod to each of the two, inviting them for discussion if either cared to. If not, she would turn back to the center of the ballroom and wait for the games to begin.

Props to @Hanako Tone for being amazing. All of my love and appreciation for the banners on such short notice

One Aryaan Shamsi could honestly say that he was proud of the team that he had managed to put together. Sure, they were not exactly the rag-tag band of outcasts that he had originally hoped to put together in blatant defiance of the strict Mahoutokoro standards. But it was a good representation of all aspects of Mahou, even those that would have been quietly shafted to the side, were anyone else Champion.

Was this the best that Mahou could field? Hell no. But Aryaan would sooner become a Navy robe than ask for help from the ruddy close-minded bints. Even Shimizu-kun had had to be tempered significantly before he was made suitable to Aryaan’s arbitrary standards.

It was stupid, playing his own brand of politics at such a large scale, but the Indian boy had refused to sacrifice quality and worth to the temple of status. Even if it would blow up in his face right about now.

This was his team, and he trusted them more than he would ever admit out loud.

Well. He trusted most of his team rather well.

He turned to Christopher, all easy smiles to cover his concern. He did not know the boy as much as we would have liked, and the golden robes made him cautious.

“What do you think, then? Shall we go out and crush ‘em all?”

Honestly it was smart for Miles that he had chosen Rett to be part of his team. The young boy was smart, proud of Ilvermorny more than anyone he knew, and a good strategist. He was a perfect fit. It was time that these other schools knew how powerful Ilvermorny was. Being part of the team had become a prestigious brag for himself and his parents. His chest was puffed with pride. The only sign that something was off being the slight sadness in his eyes that his long time boyfriend, Rafael D'spacito, wasn't there to see him. But he would make his name known so that his boyfriend could be proud of him. He took his spot on the board. "Let's show them what Ilvermorny is made of."

In all honesty, just looking at the crowd, the once cheery confident boy somehow lose his cheery confident-ness. He didn't know how did he manage to end up in this tournament in the first place. The curly-haired boy signs up pretty last minute, as he only signs up for the heck of it without having any faith in actually getting in. But as the team is announced, their champion Miles, who is his senior, actually picked him to be a supporting member of his team! He is incredibly flattered, of course, the look on El's face is totally priceless. But this once confident boy suddenly questioned his skills in the face of other team members.

But when their name is announced, his face lights up with joy and excitement. All nervousness is gone, and as he meet up with all of his team members, "Hey Rett!" He cheers his fellow teammate closest to him. El didn't know much about him as he is his senior and is from another house, but in a classic Elowen manner, he'd love to befriend everyone he came across.

As he steps into the ballroom, he notices their opponent, who he did have the honor of meeting months ago also at the same school they are now. One student from the Mahoutokoro does stand out as he also has the honor of chatting with him at the summer camp. He smiled and wave at the tall Japanese @Sara Kohana innocently.
