2022, Stage 1 Ravenclaw vs. Gryffindor: Match 12

It was time for her first duel of the year and Samantha was ready for it. The fact that she had become dueling co-captain was a huge confidence boost for the young girl and she was a hundred percent she would win her current duel and every single one after that. This year she would make up for the two duels she lost last year and show everybody how great the eagles were. The shared first place with Gryffindor last year was an improvement from the year before that but the brunette was sure that this time they would do even better.

Hair in a tight ponytail, the brunette made her way up to the stage once her name was called together with her dueling partner. Cade would receive a little smile from her when both of them took their place on the stage. "This time we will win," she shared confidently, "we can do this!" The last time she was paired with Cade, they had been up against a fifth and third year and as two little second-year students they had been crushed.

Her opponents in this stage were luckily a lot closer to her age than the ones she had dueled the year before. Samantha didn't really know Sylvie but that couldn't be said about the other lion that walked onto the stage. "I am glad you won't hold back," she replied with a little smile playing around her lips, "if you would, it would make our win a lot less special." After those words, she quickly glared at Cade to see how he would react to her comment, wondering if he was just as confident as she was.

Her pale fingers were wrapped around the cherry wood of her wand as the young girl slowly lifted her wand, ready for the duel to start. "Good luck, and I hope you both reserved a spot in the hospital wing," she told the lions, grinning widely. "You will need it!"

It was time for another round of duels, and as young Gryffindor stepped onto the stage, shots of adrenaline were practically being pumped into her brain. She cracked her knuckles, dislodging the wand that pinned her fiery hair in place and twirling it in her fingers.

She'd miss dueling with Nicky; her partner from last year, but as she came up beside the younger girl she was paired with and listened to her playful banter with the other team Sylvie knew they were going to get along just fine. She shot the other team a grin and got into position.

Cade made his way up to the dais with his new captain. He felt some measure of pride toward Sam seeing as she'd made such ambitious strides toward becoming what she was now. It seemed only yesterday they'd lost their last duel together, the summer had gone by quickly. And Cade was somewhat glad of it, he preferred school to his life at home. But now that his sister Astrid was starting her very first year here at Hogwarts, it seemed that even school would cease to be the escape he so desired. Even now he could spot the little first-year Hufflepuff spectating with a large sign in hand. Go Eagles! Written in shimmering blue and bronze. Cade would wave bashfully towards her before turning his attention towards Samantha.

His captain seemed rather confident about their prospects. And Cade would have to agree that this time around they'd been evenly matched toward their opponents. His midnight eyes flicked between the Gryffindors as though sizing them up. "We've got a standing chance. Just need to keep a level head and remember our strategy. It can't be that hard." The Ravenclaw wizard quietly agreed. As excited as Samantha was, Cade's realist viewpoints far outweighed his confidence. He'd been through many duels despite how young he was. He'd been at the game since his first year. And he knew just how fast tables could turn if they weren't careful. He'd been waking up in the hospital wing no matter if it was a win or loss in the past. He knew just what could happen if his luck fell short. However these past few months he'd been working on himself. He wanted to improve, and the only way to do that was through more and more experience. Hell, it would be a nice change if he took a win under his belt, especially in front of his sister.

Gryffindor and Ravenclaw were equally fierce, especially coming off last year’s tie. Any time these houses were paired up this year, she suspected it would be intense. It was something San looked forward to seeing. The more chaotic the duel, the more fun it was to watch over.

Cade started off the duel with a well-cast Ventus headed straight toward Sylvie; however, the girl was ready for it and easily dodged the gusts of wind. Cade himself would not be so lucky as Regina targeted him with the same spell. Not only did she engulf Cade within a whirlwind, but her spell also split. While it had happened enough in duels, it was always something to be proud of when it happened. Unfortunately, Regina’s split Windstream would be dodged by Samantha.

Samantha was about to deliver karmic retribution upon Regina with the ultimate mother, may I spell, and the answer was no. The lioness tried to dodge the spell, but it still clipped the side of her face. There would be no pain, but your tongue snapping to the roof of your mouth, unwilling to move, must be unsettling. Sylvie levied her wand at Samantha, sending out the blazing blue light of the knockback jinx, but the eagle was just too swift and managed to evade relatively easily.

Interestingly, Santario did not see Regina taking being silenced well; that girl had wildfire running through her veins. It was only round one, though, and still anyone’s match.

Even though Regina was her friend, it didn't stop the young girl from aiming her wand at the Gryffindor with determination. There were many dueling spells Samantha had never tried in an official duel and some she had tried but never successfully hit a person with, like the Tongue-Tying Spell. "Mimblewimble" the incantation left her lips. Her blue eyes were focused on her target as she cast the spell and a mischievous smile appeared on the brunette's face when her spell hit. This had created the perfect opportunity to tease her friends a little.

But before she could yell anything across the stage, Samantha had to dodge the incoming spell Sylvie had sent her way. The familiar look of a flipendo passed by the third year as she dodged the spell in Matrix style. If only she was wearing the cool sunglasses and coat the guy wore in the movie it would have been perfect. Sadly, her partner wasn't blessed with the powers of the Matrix and got hit by Regina's spell, leading to the poor boy having to struggle with strong winds.

After giving Cade a small encouraging smile, she turned her focus to the lions. "Why so quiet, Regina?" she teased her friend.

The witch's eyes grew wide as she completely whiffed her spell. Scoff. A miss was unacceptable, and ever the persistent one, Sylvie was determined to at least land SOMETHING on her opponent. Anything.

Not letting frustration take hold of her (for once), she shook off the first-duel-of-the-season jitters and readied her wand once more. It was still early!

"Ventus!" Cade was the first to cast his spell. A strong gust of wind shot from the tip of his walnut wood wand clutched tightly in his palm towards Sylvie; the young wizard could feel the change in air pressure. But I wouldn't be enough, Sylvie was just too fast for him. Just danced out of the way in the nick of time. Cade didn't have the luxury of throwing a friendly jest toward the fourth year. Almost immediately Regina had cast another wind jinx straight for him, rendering the Ravenclaw into a strong wind tunnel. His mouth, which had been unfortunately left ajar after his incantation, had caught the wind, blowing out his cheeks and exposing both sets of teeth. Lips flapping audibly before he had the sense to turn his face from the blast.

Cade narrowed his eyes, as he tried to square up preparing for his next move with this horrible wind in his way. He caught Samantha's smile and returned a nod in her direction to confirm that he was hanging in there. But he didn't dare speak over this wind in fear that he might miss something.
