New Friends Closed

It was another busy day for Rita. As usual, there were a day of loads of classes and homework, as well as the exciting but intense Quidditch training, which made Rita extremely tired and sweated a lot. She really wanted to find a place to sit down, have some food, and chat with someone to really relieve her pressure. She finally decided to go to great hall to have a feast.

So, she arrived at the great hall, and find out it was again, the same food. The food was pretty good, but Rita was tired of seeing the same food all the time, hopefully they will get something different when big events such as Christmas comes. Rita grabbed some chicken and salad and find a place to seat to enjoy her food. Suddenly, she saw the person seating next to her is Oli, the boy with an owl named Wisdom she saw on the Hogwarts express traveling back to school, "How do you do, Oli? How are you feeling today? Tired as well? I hope you are feeling good today!" Rita smiled at Oli, hoping he would respond to her. She also started to eat to fill up her empty stomach while waiting for Oli to respond.

Oliver was doing his homework at the table when a girl approached him. He recognized her from the train. If he could recall correctly, her name was Rita.

”How do you do Oli? How are you feeling today? Tired as well? I hope you are feeling good today!” she asked.

”If only… so much work… there is no way I am gonna be able to finish this all tonight!” he said.

He let his head fall and slam onto the table.

Why does the homework have to be so long and hard?! he added.

”Ever since I got here I have been having trouble doing anything! I can barely make it to class on time! Is this only happening to me?” he said whining.

He ate until he felt full. He was exhausted he wanted to hit the pause button and take a good long rest.

I wish I could take a day off… he thought.

Anyways, how has your day been? he asked Rita as he finished his food. He waited for her to respond. He hoped he wasn’t the only one having a hard time. Not in a bad way but just he wanted somebody to relate to, a friend maybe.

Ebony's original intention of coming to the Great Hall wasn't to chat with anyone but to finish her homework, but she saw a group of people who looked familiar and were also doing homework. A bit of social interaction couldn't hurt, and maybe it would help her finish her homework and give her ideas. There was a girl and the boy, the girl who she faintly recognised (her year, maybe?) and the boy whom she had never talked with or seen before, so she assumed he was a first year.

Ebony approached the group and overheard the boy saying that the homework was hard, and that he was having trouble doing things. "It's not only happening to you. Homework is so hard, especially this year. You'll get used to it, just don't procrastinate like I do," she said.

"Mind if I sit here?" Ebony asked, motioning at the empty seat next to the boy. Startled, she hastily added, "I'm Ebony. Second year Ravenclaw." She realised they might have been in conversation and that she was interrupting something. It seemed she was always interrupting something. She took out her everlasting pen and twirled it awkwardly, glancing at the undone pile of homework laying in her bag. Was she wasting time by trying to socialise? Was she just interrupting people? Ebony couldn't help but question what she was doing.

Rita was just putting some chicken into her mouth when Oli sighed and complained about the homework being too much. Rita gently pated his shoulder, trying to comfort him, "I understand your feeling, Oli. There is a lot of homework to do, and I also have Quidditch training, which makes me busier and more tired. Take it easy, Oli, you`ll get used to it. We are all here to help if you got any problems."

Just then, a girl with dark hair and brown eyes wearing Ravenclaw clothes found a seat beside Oli, introducing herself as Ebony. Rita waved to the girl, "Hi, Ebony! Yeah, you can feel free to sit here! My name is Rita, Rita Su, a Second-Year Hufflepuff. How`s your day? What are you gonna eat for dinner tonight?" Rita smiled to the Ravenclaw girl, hoping the girl did not find her warm greeting to be too overwhelming. Rita surely did not want the girl to be upset when she met them for the first time. She knew she has a tendency to be too friendly to strangers and she knew some shy people may found this to be too overwhelming, but it was just her habit, and she did not want to control that.

It had not been long when a girl, ravenclaw, introduced herself as Ebony Vetra. “Nice to meet you! Homework sure is tiring…” he said as he stabbed his chicken and put it in his mouth. He thought about the pile of homework assignments due the end of the week in his dormitory. He didn’t know if he should sit here or just leave and do the never ending pile of homework. He pulled his quill out and a piece of parchment, then he mushed aside his plate and goblet and started writing the essay he needed to pass in for charms. He was nearly finished when the unimaginable happened. His goblet of water spilled all over! He tried to save his homework that he spent so much time on, but it was no used. The ink was already smudging on the parchment. “Crap” he said while covering his face with his hands. He felt embarrassed. He wanted to cry right then and there. He had the urge to just get up, and leave. He was so clumsy at times. “Sorry…” he said trying to clean up with his handkerchief. Then he caved in. He started crying in front of the whole table! He tried to wipe away the tears but they just kept coming. He was so stressed. He buried his head into his arms feeling extremely embarrassed.

Rita was a bit surprised when Oliver put a piece of chicken into his mouth, then take out his quill and paper to do his homework. "You are so hard-working, Oli! You are doing your homework during dinner time. That`s why you are an Ravenclaw. Alright, focus on your work then, I won`t disturb you by trying to chat with you then." Then Rita stopped talking, continued to eat her dinner, and let Oli finish his homework quietly.

Suddenly, something unexpected happened. Oli accidentally knocked down his goblet of ink, and the ink was running everywhere in the dinner table. Oli clearly felt panicked and began to clean the whole mess up using his handkerchief. At last, Oli seemed to be completely stressed out and began to cry in front of everyone eating in the dinner table. Rita understood Oli must be desperate to find out his whole work had been ruined and decided to walk close to him and comfort him.

"Well, take it easy, Oli. I understand your feeling. I will also be angry about myself when I accidentally ruined the homework I`ve put a lot of effort on it. Maybe you can explain to the professor tomorrow about what happened now. I believe they won`t be harsh on you as a first year. It`s not a big deal. You are a good student, I`ve seen your effort, and you`ll be fine." Rita whispered to Oli as she petted him on his shoulder and handed him some tissue paper to wipe up his tears.

Ebony was greeted warmly by the Hufflepuff named Rita, so she smiled and plopped onto the bench next to them. "I don't know, maybe some potatoes? I love potatoes. Or I'll have what he's having right now," she said, in reply to Rita's question and nodding towards the boy who she still didn't put a name to.

She wasn't sure if he already mentioned his name and she didn't hear, or if he didn't talk about that. "I'm sorry, didn't catch your name..." she said to him awkwardly.

Just then, he knocked over his goblet of water and it spilled all over the table, including over his homework that he had worked so hard on. "Oh no!" Ebony pulled out a handkerchief from her bag and started to siphon the water away from the paper but it was too wet to be saved.

She sighed. "I wish we knew those advanced cleaning spells when we need it," she said, soaking up some more water from the table. The handkerchief was now almost see-through, with the amount of water in it. It gave the illusion that the goblet of water that the boy knocked over was very big, but she had seen it there a minute ago. It wasn't big, just the size of normal Hogwarts goblets.

Rita whispered something to him. Ebony, feeling helpless, pulled out a fresh roll of parchment and handed it to him, careful not to wet it. She patted the boy reassuringly; well, an attempt to be reassuring anyways; and said, "it's alright. If your professor isn't nice, you can always do it again. We'll help you," she said, placing the parchment on the table.

She realised he was crying and felt even more awkward and unsure of what to do. Comforting people and talking to them wasn't really her area, but she tried.

Oliver was crying his eyes out. After a while, he had finally stopped. His work was ruined. He wasn't usually this sensitive. But the work made him snap. He tried to clean up the table. The words Rita whispered to him and the words that Ebony said to him barely made him feel better. His face was turning red like a tomato. I must look so stupid! He thought. He tried to put his things back into his backpack, but it just spilled out again. In Oli's world, Work = Stress = Sad = Clumsy. He wanted to leave. He packed up his back spilling his ink in his bag. It was fine... he would get a new one if he owled his mother so she could ask someone to send a new bag for him. His blue backpack was turning dark blue from the ink but he didn't care at all. He shoved his books and ruined and wet homework assignment ( He didn't know why he packd that too ) into his bag. He got up and felt everyone's eyes staring at him. It felt like it was burning into his skin. He ran out of the great hall and ran straight up to his dorm where he lay in bed, Silently crying.

Honestly, Rita was not even surprised when Oli left the Great Hall. Anyway, leaving the great hall and going to cry by myself is a way better choice than staying here at the Great Hall and continuing to cry and embarrass himself in public. "Hopefully the boy will be fine. I don`t think he would get himself in too much trouble. It`s not a very big deal to accidentally spill your water or ink. Hopefully the professors will understand his situation and forgive him." Rita thought as Oli left the hall.

She then turned to Ebony, who was sitting near to her, and also tried to comfort Oli. "What do you think of Oli, Ebony? Hopefully he will not get himself into too much trouble. " Rita whispered to Ebony with a smile, "So, what are you gonna do? You want to leave here, or we just stay here and chat for a little longer? Either is OK for me, you decide, Ebony?" Rita put some steak into her mouth and looked again at Ebony as she waited Ebony to respond to her before she decided whether she shall leave the Great Hall or stay here for a little longer and chat with Ebony before the lunch hour ended.
