Faerietale Endings

Graphic by AngelFyre McCubbin
Be careful what you wish for was how the saying went. He’d never put much thought into it before, but he was quickly finding out why such bromides existed. Just a mere three minutes earlier he’d been debating with himself whether he was even going to stay at the Ball because there had been absolutely no one for him to talk to, but that situation remedied itself quickly enough, for good and bad.
Playing along with Bubba, he responded quite nonchalantly, “As it so happens, this princely get up did come with an impressive backsword, but I was prevented from bringing it along as I was told there was a moratorium on weapons of any sort at Hogwarts,” and he shrugged his shoulders. “Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. What do they think our wands are… theatre props?”
He was just about to ask Bubba who his date was, wondering if it was anyone Stephen might know, when he heard a very familiar, Russian-accented, female voice addressing him from behind, accompanied by a firm tap on his shoulder. His heart was hammering in his chest even before he was able to turn around he was so excited. Kamila! She’s actually here! He was first relieved to know she was at least well and then he was thrilled that she was here and sought him out. When he swiveled to face her and first laid eyes on her, everything went silent. She looked beautiful. Like really, really beautiful. He felt his mouth go suddenly very dry.
He knew she had been speaking to him, and when he was finally able to focus, her tone snapped him to attention more than her words. She sounded apologetic, confused, and a little hurt. Then he heard her explaining about Potions studies, and how she wouldn’t be mad if had let her know he had found another date. If he had what? No, no, no! He was trying to tell her it was fine, and it was, but again, his mouth was so dry now that his tongue was sticking to the roof of his mouth. When she then turned to wondering aloud why he had not responded to her and demanded to know what he had to say for himself, his tongue disengaged from his palate and he smiled. She was upset, but it was all just an owl delivery problem. This could all be easily explained.
He was pulling the thornless, lavender rose he had for her out from his sash and was about to present it to her, telling her how lovely she looked, when two students rudely insinuated themselves into his conversation with Kamila. The boy was accusing Stephen of asking each of them to the Ball as well. Oh, this was rich!
He did not know who the female was, but he definitely knew who the blonde male was. Went by the name of Felix; a Durmstrang gang member. Stephen did not know his last name because he had only come across him during a Truth or Dare game where first names were used. He honestly had no reason to remember the blonde's vanilla, forgettable face except for the fact that the ill-tempered fellow totally blew off the spirit of the dare Bubba had given him during the game. He also threw something that hit Stephen in the face during the course of completing his own dare. Stephen had been dared to keep his eyes closed for the whole round, so he did not see the jacket coming his way. One of the damn buttons hit his tooth just right and the electric zing that radiated out from his jawbone made Stephen see red in that moment when he wasn’t really supposed to be seeing anything. When the round ended, he made certain he got a look at the guy who showed up to play a game that he obviously did not want to play. It was Felix.
What exactly was Durmstrang’s major malfunction anyway? It was a thought he had pondered often since Durmstrang's idea of a "prank" was to leave a bludger in a tent with kids who had not even attended their first magic class yet and had no means to protect themselves. That wholly disproportionate response came on the heels of Stephen's team's prank which had been to glue and glitter and bubble everything in the Durmstrang tent at a point in time when Stephen and his team believed they were playing a friendly game with reasonable people. Not so as it turned out.
That moronic bludger move left EmmaLee and Jamie badly hurt and in the hospital tent. There was nothing "friendly" about Durmstrang's response. The thought of it still made Stephen's blood boil. Proportionate response is clearly not a concept Durnstrang is familiar with. Felix, to be fair, was not a part of the bludger blunder, but his trouble-making self in the here and now led Stephen to believe he would have gone along with it had he been there. Every single Durmstrang student he had met did not seem to know how to conduct themselves other than to lash out in any given situation. He would pity them if their behavior was not so dangerous. It was as if they all went to a school where juvenile delinquency was encouraged while rewarding the social outcasts with a dark arts curriculum.
Yeah. That makes good, magical sense.
As Stephen looked the two over quickly, he knew what was happening here and he knew he was not going to give them the satisfaction. It suddenly came back to him that Durmstrang created all kinds of trouble at the Spring Ball too. Well, they could find their trouble elsewhere; not with him and not tonight. Any physical or mental hostilities could be dealt with where they belonged – in the Hexwizard Tournament.
He smiled affably at the two troublemakers and put his index finger up as if to say, “Hold that thought.” Turning back to Kamila, his eyes pleading with hers for some trust, he quickly handed her the lavender rose while simultaneously grabbing his handkerchief from his trouser pocket, handing it over to her as well. “Look inside. No matter what happens next, know that you, Kamila, are who I wanted to spend time with tonight.”
Then making certain he placed himself between them and Kamila, he turned back to Felix, still smiling, but it was a Cheshire cat kind of smile. Looking the blonde straight on, and not blinking, he simply purred, “Go fish elsewhere, Felix. I’m not biting.”

Logan had not been in the courtyard for long, but she was already becoming frustrated with not being able to figure out who had asked her to the ball. Glancing down, the brunette sighed as she made sure her beloved feline was still following close beside her. The girl did not know why she brought the cat with her, maybe she did not want him to be lonely, maybe she did not want to be lonely herself, she did not know but she knew it was never a smart idea to bring a pet to the ball.
The Hufflepuff girl had not been paying complete attention to what had been going on around her, too busy attempting to figure out who had asked her to the ball. If she had been paying more attention, maybe she would have been able to avoid almost getting shoved over. With a yelp, Logan stumbled to the side, luckily being caught before her back was able to become friends with the ground. "Oh, Aaron. Hello." The girl greeted with a soft smile on her face as she noticed who had almost knocked her over, but also caught her. Logan may not have interacted with a lot of people at the school, but she remembered Aaron from the slumber party the previous January. It was a nice, calm night and she hoped she was able to call the boy a friend as she had thought they got along rather well during the times they actually spoke to each other.
Feeling a tug on her wrist, she looked down to see he had gotten caught on her wrist. The girl looking back up as the boy complemented the bracelet, muttering a quick thank you in return. That was the moment the girl noticed the present in the boy's hand as well as the moon and star pins present on his jacket, sure the package did not match the one she got earlier in the week, but maybe. There was no way that Aaron was the one to ask her to the ball...right. Logan could not see the boy being the one to ask, but things slightly added up. Maybe the note really did mean that the bracelet was the hint and said about one of them finding the other first. But how do you ask someone if they really asked you to a ball or not. The girl could only imagine the embarrassment if she was wrong.
"I am actually just looking around for whoever had asked me here. Is this considered a draw or do I win?" If Aaron was not the one that had asked her to the ball, she was going to end whoever had. This was embarrassing enough as it was, but if the boy had not asked her, she was going to look like a fool. 'Please know what I am talking about, please,' the girl thought to herself as she waited for the reaction from the boy.

Flash was a punctual person, usually ten minutes early to any appointment, if not earlier. This time however, he found himself struggling to get ready in a timely manner. He had never given it much thought before, as his daily appearance was more than clean and tidy enough to also be suitable for a formal occasion. For most balls, he simply wore whatever suit he picked from the catalogues his retainer sent him, and while this occasion was much the same, he found himself fretting over his looks a great deal more than usual. Had his chin always looked so big? Was his hair better with volume, or flat? Was the perfume he made too overpowering? By the end, he looked no different, but his mechanical wristwatch showed that he was close to being late. A travesty.
Ending up looking less put-together than he perhaps ever had, he would prioritize speed as he attempted to make up the time he had lost dawdling. It wouldn't cause him to break a sweat, having spent his whole life jogging every morning and participating in team sports, but it wasn't as though the clothing was made for it. In his haste, he brought along nothing more than the wand of his that was always strapped to his side. For as dangerous as balls had a wont to be, he would have done well to come a bit more prepared. It wasn't tragedy that he was thinking about, though. He was thinking about dancing.
Ever since Flash had seen Eun-ji perform live, after having already invited her to the ball prior, he could not get the thought out of his head. He had danced with many girls before, even other professional dancers, but out of nowhere he found himself afraid that he might embarrass himself. He knew Eun-ji would not mock him if he was trying his best, yet he felt some kind of pressure to impress her. It was a foreign feeling, one he incorrectly blamed on lack of sleep and stress.
He would barely make it, leaving against the wall beside the doors to the courtyard. The location reminded him of the year before, and once again he started the event hanging to the shadows. He had gone to so many balls that many of them began to melt into one another. His dates were always the person he needed beside him at that moment-- Evelynn, Anastasia, Thomas, Opeila, Dorion-- friends and allies. He had met and become close with Eun-ji throughout all of last year and into the summer, and yet he had to fight back an anxious feeling at the back of his mind, filling it with doubts. He wouldn't be leaning for long though, as he heard her voice calling out to him right away. He straightened himself up, and put on an uneven smile.
"Ah... haha, indeed." She was only joking around with him, but once he fully caught sight of the dress she was wearing, he couldn't help but feel he was very under-dressed. She would compliment his looks though, which would bring some more color to his face. He couldn't waste any more time on insecurity when she smiled so genuinely. "I count myself lucky that I meet your standards, m'lady."
Flash would joke a bit himself, bowing slightly in the presence of Eun-ji's more regal attire. The two of them had briefly discussed the theme of the ball, landing on 'Rapunzel' as the fairy tale they would emulate. Not that it mattered much to Flash, who was likely to be going as a prince regardless. He certainly could have tried to play the part better, and might have looked more appropriate beside her in a fancier get-up, but he was not the type to get buried under too many ornate details and dressings. Had he done so, the act of running to the ball would have been twice as difficult. He would slowly creep into a better mood, taking in all the details of her flowery pink gown and crown as he stood there a moment longer.
"You look phenomenal." Flash would say, feeling as though the word couldn't quite express his true feelings. He wish he could simply take the feeling out of his chest and show her how profoundly she affected him. Alas, all he had was words. "I never thought I would be looking forward to a ball still, but I've never been so glad that my family taught me how to dance."
With that, he would offer his arm for her to take, a common courtesy even though he was no more sure of where they were headed than she was. All he needed was for her to be close, and to spend time with her. Everything else would sort itself out.
"What do you think, shall we head to the dance floor, or is there something else that interests you?" Flash would walk forward, no destination in mind besides to stay away from the most crowded spots with too much noise. His attention would be on her, not noticing the chaos and devils among them. "I'm in high spirits, so you don't need to worry yourself about my state."

Dancing had certainly been checked off their list. From romantic, to exhilarating, to silly and fun. Simon was all smiles now as he watched her wave and looked to follow her eyesight just past the ways to where he saw Dave Howard following the trail that would lead them to the Petting Zoo upon the Grounds.
They were now close to the Grand Feast laid out before the students of Hogwarts and other schools and he turned his attention to it as she asked how wise it would be to trust anything to pass their lips. "Trust, and ignorance and doing so anyway are two very different things, my love," he said as he said to her as he lifted two of the silver goblets from the dark linen and handed over one to her. "I don't trust anything upon this table."
But what was life without a little risk?
"To us; Angelfyre McCubbin and Simon Kincaid. To our past days, our current days, and into our happily ever after - may we continue to laugh, love, support, and strengthen." He would hold his drink up high and extended toward her to welcome a toast, and once their goblets clanged together he would allow himself to take a drink. Not quite sure what the dark red liquid was, it certainly wasn't whatever his father had been pouring into his drink back at The Duck and Waffle restaurant in London over the past Summer, or Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello itself.
To accompany the drink, there was stew, puddings, pies, and apples. It wouldn't take knowing Simon Kincaid very long to realize that he would go for some of the stew over any of the other offerings and he did just that, allowing AngelFyre to make her own selection and curious as to what she would choose while he took a bite from the bowl he had poured.
Simon took a moment to glance out at the others, maybe looking for some of his best friends like Clair Fernandez or Samantha Salwis. Maybe he was looking for a glimpse of Colin McCoire who they would be trying to find shortly. Maybe he was just capturing a look at the night but it didn't hold his attention long before it was back on her. Simon smiled. He knew how lucky he was that she was there by his side.

It could be said that Della was surprised to find herself at the Fall Ball, considering the events that had happened at her first Hogwarts ball. Maybe one could say that, but at this point in Della's school career, she was tired of being surprised by Hogwarts's chaos and being surprised that she kept coming back. So instead of ruminating at all whether she should be here, if it were a smart idea to go boldly into a dangerous future, or if she should have even come back to this school for another year, she showed up at the school dance.
This time around, she sent an owl home as soon as she heard about the ball's theme, and her mother had the time to help her with a much more elaborate look. She was wearing a hand-sewn red velvet dress that implied Little Red Riding Hood but didn't scream it. It was a little more stylish than Della was used to wearing, but it didn't stick out in this crowd. And it contrasted wonderfully with her silver hair.
She was a little remiss to find out after her mother had acquired the dress from a tailor that there would be a magical petting zoo. She didn't want to get the wonderful item dirty, but she also wasn't going to not go see the magical creatures. In the end, she figured there wasn't any dirt that magic couldn't fix.
First, though, Della wanted to make an appearance at the main part of the ball. And wow, as always, Hogwarts knew how to throw a party. The courtyard was aglow with fairy lights, and throughout there so many little details that Della felt as if she had fallen into the first chapter of magical storybook. Well, she kinda had done that, hadn't she?
Of course, her eye found the frog fountain first. There hadn't been a performance scheduled for the frog choir this time, but this was the next best thing. She sat by the rim of the fountain, watching happy amphibian princes hop about. The fairies fluttered around her hair, and she hoped she would stay in their good graces. She found herself sitting here for sometime, enjoying the sights and sounds.

A dozen of light blue feathers carefully layered, the wide skirt and the off-shoulder sleeves gave her dress a different look than her previous ball dresses. The dress was stunning and her jewelry complimented her bright blue eyes perfectly. One of her dormmates had helped the young girl apply makeup with the Cosmetic Puff Samantha had recently brought before doing the brunette's hair. She was in love with her outfit and hoped her date would like it too. Honestly, Bubba was the only reason she had spent so much time on her outfit. Normally she would have let her mom pick her dress and not spent any more than 5 minutes on her hair and makeup before running off to the ball to make new friends.
In preparation for the ball, she had spent way too much time on her appearance causing her to run a little late, something that rarely happened to her. Trying to catch up for the lost time, she tried to descend the stairs in the Ravenclaw tower at great speed. Besides amazing her dress was also really heavy which caused Samantha to almost fall down the stairs after the third step. Assuming Bubba preferred her being safe over her being on time, she decided to walk a little slower in hopes of not losing her balance again. The journey to the bottom of the Ravenclaw tower took way longer than normal and the young prefect was slightly out of breath but that didn't stop her from hurrying towards the courtyard where her handsome date would be waiting for her.
It was a good thing that the two of them hadn't agreed to meet in the Ravenclaw tower because now she had some time to quickly check her hair to make sure it looked perfect. In the second she stood still before entering the courtyard, she wiped her sweaty hands on the delicate feathers of her dress. To say she was nervous was a huge understatement. She hoped with all her heart Bubba thought she looked beautiful and might even recognize to what story her dress referred to. The idea that her outfit might be a bit dramatic for her crush had scared her away from wearing it at first but in the end, she gathered the courage to wear it. Not many people had seen her outfit yet, not even Elsian. Samantha had purposely kept her dress and the story a secret from her idiotic friend, very aware he wanted to know what it was. Besides that she loved the story of the ugly duckling, the dress also fitted Elsi's nickname for her, feathers, and she knew he would love it.
Nervously biting her bottom lip, the brunette walked into the courtyard and started to look for the familiar face of Bubba. It took her a while to spot her date, first noticing some of her other friends like Simon and Logan who were together and Simon. With the sight of her friends, a small smile appeared on her face. Maybe she could drop by later to say hi to them. Of course, her main focus would be on her date with who she wanted to spend every second of the ball. But it still would be nice to say hi to her friends, that way they would also get to know Bubba a bit! The young girl was too focused on finding her date to notice the cold breeze in the courtyard.
Her eyes finally spotted her handsome date, her heart skipped a beat. Even from this distance, she could see how great he looked. With every step she took closer to him, she could feel her heart beating faster. Bubba was talking with two other students but Samantha didn't care about them, she only had eyes for her date. How his blue jacket fitted him perfectly, a little bit of his white shirt showed and his literally perfect hair, nothing went unnoticed by the young girl. It was the little details she usually didn't pay attention to but now seemed so important. Once he would spot her, a shy smile appeared on her blushing face as she hoped he thought she looked just as great as she thought he did. "Hi," she stammered awkwardly, unsure of what to do next.

Kayla entered the ball in good spirits, smiling broadly as she made her way towards the courtyard. She wore a sage green dress with silver butterflies on them; she had planned on being a woodland fairy, but she crushed the thought as she wasn't able to get wings, instead she had gotten a simple flower crown to replace the wings. She wore pretty and had put on a light pink shade of lipstick, and a bit of blush to her cheeks to add a bit of color to her face- but other than that, no make-up that stretched further than that.
She looked up and down- and left and right. Whoever had prepared all this had obviously done a wonderful job. They had captured the full of affect of the childhood that many had. The golden goose? People can hardly forget that tale. The glass shoe from Cinderella? Everyone should know that tale, it's a childhood classic. And the ducks! The ugly duckling- the story parents and teachers a like told kids to keep their self esteem up. She watched as people moved aside her, some wearing magnificent outfits, some choosing rather simple outifts.
She watched the little creatures as faeries circled around her, fluttering about, one poked at her flower crown and Kayla held it firmly down on her hair, attempting to not destroy the neatness, but also to ensure that a bunch of faeries wouldn't carry her crown off. If she couldn't have wings, she'd have to stick with the crown, she supposed. The faerie that had poked at her crown fluttered its wings and went to do something else.
"Show off," Kayla muttered, regretting that she didn't buy wings seeing the faeries fly. Not like it would make a difference anyway. She waited not-so-patiently at the entrance as she walked back up and down, waiting for Nico, really wanting to get a better look around.

Rita was just waiting for Marius, Ash, and Elena to respond to her when a girl wearing a green dress and a flower crown also entered the courtyard with a big smile on her face to find someone to participate in the ball. Rita was amazed by the girl`s green dress with silver butterflies on it, so she walked close to see who that girl is. Luckily, it was her friend Kay, the young Hufflepuff girl she chatted with while enjoying lunch and the nice weather on the grounds. "Maybe I could start a chat with Kay!" Rita thought.
"Good evening, Kay! Welcome to the Faerietale Endings ball! How are you feeling today? Are you excited for the ball?" Rita waved to Kay with a smile, "You look stunning today! I really like your green dress and your flower crown! Who would be your dance partner tonight? I hope you will have an absolutely great time tonight!"
After greeting to Kay, Rita was still thinking about her friend Tesla who agreed to dance with her. "Where is she? Does she forget that we are going to dance together? Or she is just busying dancing with others? I don`t know! I hope she would come later!"

Rebecca looked at where Colin pointed and saw Jannette Applebottom running quickly through the crowd and into the castle. "She looks upset," Rebecca said, turning to the rest of the group. He shrugged at them all. "I mean, she terrifies me a little. But I'd better make sure she's alright."
He started walking away. "Be back in a bit!" he shouted over his shoulder, then hastened to catch up with Jannette, the bell around his neck jingling.
She was already in the castle, making her way towards the stairs. "Hey!" Rebecca called.
Jannette looked dishevelled. Her eyes were wet and red, and she sniffled a little as she turned towards him. Rebecca was winded, hands on his knees and a cramp burning in his chest from running. God how did she walk so quickly?
"You're leaving- early," he said, catching his breath. He straightened up with some difficulty. "What's up Jannette? Is there something wrong?"
He felt a bit awkward, not knowing quite what to say. "The food wasn't that bad, was it?" he tried for a joke.
To be honest, Rebecca didn't really know Jannette that well. Since the first night, they hadn't spoken. The entrance was empty, and though Rebecca had left the door open a bit behind him, it was jarring to be so suddenly removed from the heady atmosphere of the Fall Ball.

Tesla stepped into the courtyard where the ball was being held, hopeful that she wasn't too late to find Rita, whom she'd promised to dance with, or any of her other friends from Hufflepuff she'd hoped to find there. The party was already in full swing, and she was blown away by the incredible dresses and lights and decorations all around. Everything was jaw dropping! She paused as the sights and smells and everything overwhelmed her, taking a minute to compose herself. She felt the bone deep exhaustion of the pull of the moon tomorrow night, but as soon as she took that second to breath she felt the energy of the party sweep her up and she perked up, lighting up with a grin and starting to skip forward.
She'd taken the time to put on the beautiful dress her mothers had sent her, tied her hair back with her nicest matching blue cloth, picked a nice leather bracelet, and overall worked hard to make herself look as nice as she could, even if she'd accidentally slept all the way up until the start of the ball taking a nap.
Dress swishing playfully around her ankles Tesla waded into the midst of the ball, wandering around and looking at all the fairytale decorations and everything. Finally, she saw Rita standing amongst a group of other students, and stood on her toes to do her best to wave above the heads of the older students. She wasn't sure if Rita saw her, so she walked around the edge of a crowd and pushed her way up to her.
"Rita! There you are! I'm so sorry I'm so late! I wasn't feeling too great so I took a quick nap before I came and I completely lost track of time!" Tesla looked at the other three Rita was talking to, "I'm Tesla! You can call me Tes though. I'm glad I ran into Rita! I promised her I'd dance with her after all!"
