Emma had just finished her last class of the day and stepped to the side of the corridor to root through her bag and make sure she had everything she needed for her homework. Or at least to get started. She had the requirements for at least two of her classes, unless she needed to do more research at the library. However she glanced longingly out the window at the clear blue sky. Fall was fully here, and it was starting to get chilly. Soon enough, the snow would be flying and she’d end up spending more time inside than out. It seemed a perfect day to go outside but she knew she’d likely not get as much done outside as if she stayed in. Sighing, she resigned herself to working in a classroom or the library. Looking away from the window, she looked down to the ground, trying to keep the sky out of sight, only to freeze in terror at the size of the HUGE spider that was resting a crack between the stones of the castle.
It took only a moment for her body to unfreeze and for her to let loose a muted scream. Scrambling with heavy feet, she whimpered slightly as the spider began to creep in her general direction. Swinging her bag in its general direction, Emma was shocked when her body came to an abrupt stop at an obstacle that she hadn’t anticipated. It wasn’t the wall, she knew she hadn’t gone that far. Debating whether she could take her eyes off the spider which seemed to be holding its ground, any maybe even staring malevolently at her, Emma took a few moments before she slowly, very slowly turned her head, only to realize it was a person. Stumbling over her words, she moved away from the body she had run into, her cheeks turning a bright red. “So so sorry. There was…well, ummmm…spider? A scary….giant, well no huge, well okay maybe not that huge. It was big and….scary?”
Emma looked back towards the spider only to freeze before pointing in the general direction. “it’s….it’s gone. Maybe it went to get friends? Maybe it’s not safe to stay here?” Emma really did not like spiders. She could handle anything smaller than her finger tips but otherwise she just couldn’t deal. It was one of the reasons she always said she’d never set foot in Australia. And admittedly maybe it was wrong to say that, but she was pretty sure there were quite a bit more venomous and large spiders there then there was anywhere else.

Emma almost missed the words that the other person was saying in her terror, eyes flicking from area to area trying to discover where the devil of a spider had gone. Honestly she wouldn’t be surprised if the spider had gone to collect a mini spider army…or a proper one. Who knew what evil plans they sat hatching in their webs. It was known (or at least Emma thought) that they would sometimes spin their webs directly in her path, just to have some perverse pleasure in freaking her right out. She would feel the spider crawling on her for hours after accidentally walking through a web. Emma didn’t like seeing them but would much rather they were in her view, rather than out of her sight, at least in cases where she knew there was a spider around.
Nodding reluctantly at the person, mainly because she didn’t want to it to be true, Emma didn’t even think to feel any bit of guilty or nervous over speaking with someone she had run into. Emma usually would have felt embarrassed, but there was no room for embarrassment when a spider was involved. She nodded again, shaking. “It….i-i-it disappeared. I bet you it’s collecting an army.” She shivered harshly for a moment, taking her eyes reluctantly off of the spot where she had first spotted the spider to survey the stones under her feet, not trusting that it hadn’t snuck up on her while she was distracted. “That’s what I’m scared of. They’re tricky little beasts! They spin webs just to freak you out, I swear!”
Now that the spider was out of sight, she was still frightened but the reality of the situation was also starting to seep in a bit. “Ummmm….you don’t happen to have some kind of object or spell that tells you if a spider or army of them are nearby do you? Is that a thing? It should really be a thing.”
