A few days turned into a week.

Even if her fury had diminished somewhat, Regina did not seek out Faye. There was still a dark simmering resentment somewhere when she remembered the way the second-year Ravenclaw had dismissed her reasons for being unable to keep their promise. It wasn't as though Regina didn't care about Faye, quite the opposite. But the explosive tantrum she'd thrown to her parents back in July and her abscond from the Miller Manor afterwards had weighed too much on her mind. There was no room for anything else when Regina had spent the entirety of the first holiday month brooding at her cousin @Everly Charlton's house, and the next one during summer camp where she'd attempted to forget about the depression and anxiety.

It was reasonable. Regina hadn't wanted to forget, though Faye had took it the wrong way.

And the raven-haired Gryffindor was ready to admit to what was her fault. But the way Faye had talked to her during the second day of school had opened a tightly-locked lid of dangerous rage - consequently forcing Regina into a state of mind where she had to repress all of her emotions. If she hadn't, she would have attacked the other girl out of blind fury and regretted it immensely. Faye hadn't been the calmest, either, since she'd been provoked by @Sophia Nelson somehow and had gotten detention from the Ravenclaw Table fight during the Welcoming Feast.

This temporary distance was necessary for both of them. Regina had immersed herself in establishing her rebel reputation and was able to 'blow off some steam', as Muggles would put it. She purposefully avoided Faye in the Great Hall and the corridors outside of classes. It helped that they were in different years, too.

Now it was Friday again, and Regina was sitting on the edge of Great Lake after dinner with Athena perched on her left shoulder, pecking food from the palm of her owner's hand. She was dressed in a simple burgundy blouse and dark jean shorts with sheer black stockings. It was the perfect fit for the breezy September weather of Scotland, and Regina's eyes fell closed as a gentle gust of wind blew through her raven curls.

"I know you are there."

───── It was a week from hell.

She tried, God knows she tried, to forget her actions and get on with life, but it felt doubly hard without a certain someone. All she wanted to think about was Regina and what they were, but after she was rebuffed in the Hall she felt nothing but aerated dejection. Faye wasn't the kind of person to really feel guilt in any way (self-consciousness and a lack of self esteem was more her thing), but everytime these actions led back to Regina the unnerving guilt would follow.

Guilt would begin to turn sour, turning her miserable and petulant, taking out her anger on the people around her. An anxious first year had bumped into her in the corridor, an easy accident, but the Ravenclaw had taken it the wrong way and pushed back. Every student was a target, somebody out to get her. Those private conversations were definitely about her. She started paying even less attention in her lessons (shocker), always sitting at the back, moping. Notes were scribbled down hurriedly at the end of the lesson, her scrawl messier than normal.

It had been a week since the event and still, Faye couldn't allow herself to fully disattach herself from Regina. Maybe that was how she'd found herself making her way down to the Lake, the memory of first meeting the girl at the location leading her on. Maybe her mind would finally relax with the peaceful meditation of past experience.

This attempt was futile. Sitting at the edge of the water was the silhouette of the exact girl she'd been trying to forget. The object of all her desires, if you will. Grass muffled the sound of her heels as she moved slowly towards the girl. She stopped in her tracks when she was noticed. Maybe the grass hadn't muffled it, then.

The sound of Regina's voice made her heart swell up. She'd missed hearing that, even in her interrogative way of speech.

Wrapping her arms around her parka, she looked down at her beige shoes. Most of her outfit was extremely unfit for the Scottish winter, so she'd tried to remedy it by adding a massive coat, which just meant that her torso was warm, but her bare lower legs were freezing.

Faye moved over to stand next to the girl, keeping her head down as the wind blew through her hair. She sniffled, keeping her arms tight around the coat.

"Hey, Reg. Guess I deserved the silent treatment, aye?" Her tone was flat and quiet, laced with slight pity. She scrunched her face up, feeling guilt or remorse disgusted her.

...Can I sit?" She sniffed again, brushing her finger below her nose. "Please?"

Regina opened her eyes and gave the approaching girl a neutral glance, even as she felt an uncomfortable feeling inside her throat. A single look was enough to assume that Faye hadn't been fairing any better, judging by the hesitance in her speech and body language. Somehow, it made a strange kind of pain spiked inside Regina's chest. They never had to tiptoe around each other before. Faye looked pitiful dwarfed by her large jacket as she asked if she could sit with a soft little plea, as though Regina was a wild animal not to be angered. Perhaps she was. Emotions were still such an abnormal concept to the raven-haired Gryffindor and her ways of dealing with them were...unstable, to say the least.

Orchid eyes shifted from the blond Ravenclaw to fixate on the black waters of the lake once more, a sigh escaping her nose. Athena seemed to sense the emotional tension between them, because as soon as she finished her snack she hooted once and flew away. Regina allowed her hand to fall into her lap as she shifted her position, now sitting with one leg propped up rather than two.

"Fine."

The admission was curt, her tone clipped to disguise the turbulent storm which were her feelings - resentment, guilt, indecisiveness and uncertainty. Though, none of those could ever dream of erasing the fondness and attraction she held for Faye. No matter how angry she'd been at the girl, Regina still liked her. A lot. So it was important that they sorted out their misunderstanding.

After long minutes of uncomfortable silence, she was the one to speak up first.

"It was never my intention to forget," Regina began slowly. "I had an explosive argument with my parents when my sister snitched on my first detention last year to them. I felt incredibly slighted that none of my accomplishments ever mattered to them. I'm never enough for them."

It was a dangerous thing to openly talk about her private issues like this, but she'd never trusted anybody more than she trusted Faye. And honesty was the only way they could resolve their issue.

"I ran away from the manor during July. Afterwards, I went to summer camp because I didn't want to return home, and I needed an outlet. I needed something to get my mind off of what happened. But my days were dark and mentally painful. I just couldn't reach out to anyone at the time, and for that, I apologise for breaking our promise."

Up until now, Regina's tone had been soft as she recalled her horrific summer. But then her eyes became sharp, and her hands clenched into fists as her voice turned cold.

"However, your behaviour was out of line. Not only did you mock me, you completely disregarded how I felt and thought it was fine to brush it off as a joke. I, for one, did not find it particularly funny."

The accusation was as clear as day, and she was looking directly at Faye now. The older teen was waiting - hoping - for some sort of logical reason, some groveling, maybe even a sincere apology in return. Whatever Faye was going to say next would probably determine wherever the two of them stood, and so Regina waited for a good answer.

───── Faye kept her gaze on the girl, eyes beginning to water from the time she’d taken not blinking. It was like if she blinked or looked away, Regina would fade from existence and this whole event had just been another dream.

It felt wrong, having to pull herself away from Regina, having to keep herself away. She’d never done that before. She just stood there, waiting for some sort of sign that she could reattach herself to the Gryffindor. If she had had her way, she would be sat right beside her, with no space, hearts open.

But that wasn’t how Regina worked.

At the abrupt sound of some sort of acceptance Faye immediately dropped down onto the grass, positioning herself with her legs to the side. As she sat, she made sure to move a tiny bit closer. Not too close, but enough to satisfy the strange want that whirled through her.

Faye sat silent (it was tricky) on the grass, listening to the problems Regina was voicing. That was what she wanted, right? For her to listen to everything she’d been through? This was why she hadn’t talked to her throughout the summer. She hadn’t forgotten about her, of course not! She simply had.. other priorities.

Like her own family, Regina’s family were broken as well. She wasn't the only one whose house never felt like a home. But, why would they be? They had so much! Money, privilege, everything. How could they not be happy? How could they?

Right as she was about to open her mouth to stumble through some sort of half-hearted apology she'd probably improvise on the spot, the speech turned hostile.

Faye gritted her teeth together and looked down at the grass, shaking ever so slightly. She had barely done anything! Everything she'd done had been for Regina but, in the end, all she'd really done was draw her away. God, she could be so stupid sometimes.

She sat still for a few seconds as she tried to piece together what to say. This wasn't the time to bite back. Spite wouldn't get her anywhere.

"I was immensely, royally wrong. I mean people do that, y'know. Be wrong. A summer in a place where you're, quite literally, the bottom of the pile really riles you up. I spent the whole summer wishing you'd just- I don't know, magically show up, make it less shitty."

"But you didn't. And I know that you were dealing with your own things, and I'm so, so sorry about that, really, but I've had issues too. I don't think things through and then I lash out, like that thing you do where you get all trigger-happy with your wand." Faye giggled slightly to lighten the mood, pointing to one of Regina's pockets. She let her slight laughter die down into a silence as she figured through her next words, sniffling again before turning to face the girl, shuffling closer once more.

"I know you want some form of explanation, Reg." Her voice was softer now, wavering slightly. "But, I don't know how to explain it. Everything just.. clouds my thoughts and judgment, and all of a sudden I'm saying awful things I really, really don't mean, or doing stupid things that hurt the people around me."

"But I never, ever mean any of it. I mean, you're like, the best person I've ever met. You're pretty, strong, brilliant, you're probably super smart as well."

"'She was convinced that she could have been happy with him, when it was no longer likely they should meet.’ It's a quote from Pride and Prejudice. Lizzie recounts how she feels about Darcy. They get together in the end, you know? They get over their initial hatred and realise they're most fit for eachother. It's quite lovely, when you think about it."

She looked away again, fiddling with the tips of her fingers that poked out her oversized sleeves, face devoid of emotion.

"I've really messed everything up, haven't I?"

At the mention of the Ravenclaw's terrible summer and desire for her presence to make it all better, she felt a slight pang in her heart, so unfamiliar she almost didn't notice it. The longer Faye went on, Regina's sharp gaze seemed to soften just a little - something that up until now, she was surprise she was capable of herself. She didn't think she'd ever looked at anybody the way she looked at this Muggleborn whom she'd hated at first glance. It was funny how fate worked, that it would bring her somebody to mellow her out and have her dedicate that 'human' side to without fear of being hurt or betrayed.

And the universe had made a good choice too, for as soon as Faye had complimented Regina aside from a heartfelt apology, she felt her ego growing and the corner of her lips curled into a pleased smile. Yes, she was indeed as beautiful and brilliant as the other girl claimed. Faye really knew her better than anyone she'd ever met, and Regina didn't want to lose such a person - though she would never admit it out loud. This sometimes whimsical, sometimes emotional Ravenclaw was perfect as her companion. Faye listened to Regina, she understood when she was wrong, and she put in the effort to make amends. No one else could compare.

The first person who didn't give up on her.

"Not quite," Regina hummed in response to the blonde Muggleborn, leaning back with one hand pressed against the grass. "I won't sugarcoat it, you did manage to set me off that day, and I would have drawn my wand on you if you weren't somebody I care about."

She closed the distance between them by using her other arm to wrap around Faye's shoulder comfortingly. The Gryffindor never initiated any form of physical contact, so there was something to be said about her current gesture when it came to this girl by her side.

"But I understand where you are coming from. I am...not adept with this sort of thing, but I believe it is normal in interpersonal relationships for both sides to have an argument as long as we know how to resolve it. It certainly does not change the fact that you are incredibly dear to me, and if I had been a better person, perhaps you would not be as chagrined."

Regina turned to look at Faye with gentle warmth inside her orchid purple eyes, despite her face not showing any affectionate emotion.

"However...for as long as you want me, I will come back to you even when I am angry. You are the only one who understands me, Faye," She confessed.

There was so much more she wanted to say, but the raven-haired Pureblood stayed silent. Waiting, maybe, for a sign.
