"Oi firstie! Blimey! Nice chocolate frogs yer got there. Yer don't mind sharin' some wiv me and me mates 'ere, right, do yer?"

Regina was casually perched on a sturdy oak branch with her legs crossed, Athena sitting on her human's shoulder and grooming her wings, when an arrogant voice from below made the third-year lifted her head from the letter she was writing to @Sophia Nelson about an equivalent exchange. Orchid purple eyes fell upon the scene of three male students cornering a younger boy against the tree she was lounging on. Regina recognised the bullies to be some cocky Gryffindor second-years, faces she'd seen passing by the common room, no doubt looking for defenseless victims because they were no longer the 'firsties' and felt the need to assert dominance. What a lot of wankers, and the insufferable plebeian accent too. She wasn't a saint herself, but at least Regina didn't actively go out of her way to terrorise people - only the ones who decide to pick a fight with her.

"You've got nothing better to do than extort first-years in broad daylight?" The raven-haired rebel spoke up from her seat on the branch, looking at their bewildered faces from down her nose. "And on a Saturday too. Some people actually want to spend their week-end in peace, thank you."

Regina pocketed the small piece of parchment and quill before hopping down, landing gracefully between the cowering victim and the bullies who had rushed backwards warily. Athena hovered in the air before returning to her previous position on her master's shoulder, beady eyes fixated at the boys in an intimidating way. Regina titled her head, amused by the fearful expression on their faces as they finally seemed to recognise exactly who she was. It seemed that her rebel reputation preceded her.

"Wotcher want, yer nutter? We didn't do anyfink ter yer!"

"You believe me to be crazy? Then you ought to know I don't like it when tossers like you ruin my peaceful morning," She replied, voice colder than ice. The temperature around them seemed to drop when her aspen wand slid into her palm and the bullies jumped. One word was all it took. "Scram."

They weren't admittedly all that daft, in her point of view, when they immediately scurried away. Regina turned around to the meek young boy who attempted to thank her with a smile, but was instantly shut down by her next words.

"If you claim to be grateful, then how about you give me those chocolate frogs as an offering?" She drawled. "What, did you really think I scared them away out of goodwill? You clearly have yet to heard of me. I don't protect the weak."

The Gryffindor rebel held out her free hand, one eyebrow raised expectantly. The fearsome intensity of her unnatural purple eyes seemed to frightened the boy enough for him to shove the treats at her and ran away. Regina huffed cynically. Idiot.

xxxConfidence from a shiny new prefect's badge did little good when you forgot to wear it anywhere. Saying 'I'm a prefect' did little to deter people from wrongdoings when you didn't actually have anything to back it up. Of course, Maggie hadn't really implemented her 'prefect powers' since the school year began--just didn't see any reason for it. In all honesty, Maggie just didn't see why she had been selected to be a prefect in the first place. It wasn't the most natural choice.

Maggie did enjoy the power that came with it, though.

Regardless, when she saw the second year Gryffindors picking on someone else upon the grounds, she groaned with frustration at the fact that she had to deal with it. Should she give detention? Should she step in and issue a warning? Turned out that Maggie wouldn't have to stress about it, though, because another girl was already on the case. Maggie watched her jump from the tree and scold the boys.

Something was off about it, though. She didn't seem to be doing it for the betterment of the life of the poor boy they were picking on, far different from anyone that Maggie had otherwise seen at Hogwarts. There was a very clear attitude that most students had, some sort of hero complex that just begged to be picked apart in a session with a psychologist. This girl didn't seem to have that protagonist syndrome.

Maggie liked it.

So, when the bullied boy shoved his candies away and scurried off, Maggie approached with a confident air. There were rarely moments that Maggie didn't approach situations with confidence and wonder. "Growing a collection?" She gestured vaguely to the candies that the boy had thrust at the girl. "Or just like terrorizing little boys?"

Up close, the girl was quite pretty. She gave off this self-assured vibe, like she didn't care a lick what anyone had to say about her (or anyone else, for that matter). Maggie thought it was neat, honestly. She surveyed the owl on the girl's shoulder, squinting a bit and reaching up to wiggle her fingers in a little 'hello' at the little creature. "I'm Maggie."

The Gryffindor rebel turned around and narrowed her eyes at the girl with choppy brown hair.

"Excuse me?"

Yes, it was a rhetorical question. Regina had heard her perfectly well the first time - she was trying to examine whether this person was trying to incriminate her or not. Orchid eyes gave 'Maggie' a critical once over from head to toe. She didn't recognise her from any of her classes, but they were about the same height, so Regina made a wild guess that she was an underclassman. Definitely not a first-year, though, Maggie looked much too confident to be.

Now, what purpose could a second-year stranger have for approaching her, especially after witnessing Regina establishing dominance over several weaker students? Surely anybody in their right mind would never even attempt to strike conversation with someone who meant trouble. But the way this Maggie girl looked at her, as though she admired Regina's prowess, definitely stroke her ego just a tad. Athena hooted curiously with her head titled to the side, catching the Lioness' attention. She trusted her owl's assessment of humans more than anyone, because Athena was incredibly smart, and currently Maggie did not seem like a threat. For how long that may last.

Regina's gaze shifted back to the brunette in front of her, pocketing the newly acquired trophies chocolate frogs and tucking her wand back in its place under her sleeve.

"Miller. Regina Miller," She returned the introduction with one of her own, albeit in a bored fashion and nowhere as friendly. "Third year Gryffindor. If you must know, I don't usually go around to terrorise people. Only the ones who have crossed me."

The raven-haired teen took a few steps forward, crossing her arms and straightening her back to tower over the other girl.

"Do you always stand and watch little boys being bullied? What's your last name, girl?"

xxxTo be completely and entirely frank, Maggie was supposed to break up those sorts of situations. If someone was bullying another, or if one girl forced little boys to give her their chocolate frogs, it was technically Maggie's prerogative to do something about it. As a school prefect. But there was a reason that she wasn't wearing her badge. More than one, really--she didn't want anyone looking at her weird because of it, and she couldn't trust herself to do prefect duties beyond just patrols. Especially when it came to giving detentions to scary upperclassmen.

"Well, not often," Maggie shrugged, "I was just walking and I saw you guys. Don't know if that constitutes hanging out and watching kids get bullied."

No, Maggie was no threat. She didn't think so, anyway. She wasn't particularly strong or smart or intimidating in any way. However, she did have a hard time realizing when someone else was a threat. Not that Regina was secretly planning on killing her or anything, but there was always that small chance. "It's Hawkins. I'm not a pureblood, you wouldn't know it," then, quick as possible, "you know, I've been thinking about that. A lot of purebloods around here are super into the last name thing. I don't get it. Are you a pureblood, Regina Miller?"

None of this, as annoying as it was, was said in cold blood or with any sort of negatively geared towards Regina. Maggie was simply a loose canon, irritating, very loud at the best of times.

"I really like your owl."

An elegant eyebrow raised at the girl's remark regarding Pureblood mannerisms was the only reaction pulled out of Regina.

"Other than our enemies, it's a form of politeness to address a stranger or an acquaintance by their last name," She said, leaning back slightly to stare down her nose at the stranger condescendingly. "I would not expect you to understand our customs. A Pureblood's family name is our very heritage."

If it had been just a year earlier, Regina would have already scoffed at a lesser blood's attempts to converse with her. As it was, she'd learnt to be more tolerant towards them because of the connections she'd made, though the natural distrust ingrained into her from a young age never quite go away. She supposed she could still make an exception for this girl who had approached her without ill intent. The brunette did not pose any danger to Regina. She was positively curious, if not irritatingly friendly and a little daft for walking up to someone who clearly was a threat. Regina could respect that misguided bravery - to an extent.

At the compliment for her precious feathered companion, the corner of her lips lifted ever so slightly as she uncrossed her arms and reached up to gently pet the white owl crooning pleasantly.

"This is Athena. She is incredibly clever, and as loyal as she is fierce. Her sharp beak is quite a weapon against those who threaten me."

She didn't mean it to sound like a warning to Hawkins, but she didn't care. Intimidation was a tool Regina enjoyed using whether or not voluntarily - one of the things she did not resent her father from teaching her.

Purple eyes moved back to Hawkins as her features became cold once again, but her interest was now peaked. The underclassman seemed to have a certain look beyond simple curiosity...something like an eager, innocent baby duckling wanting to know more. Regardless if Regina had literally demonstrated how she only protected a victim in order to extort personal benefits and not out of the good of her heart like so many Gryffindors always did.

Fascinating. With the right words, this girl could prove very useful.

"You are much too detached with bullying to be a Hufflepuff or a Ravenclaw," She mused, her posture becoming a bit less intimidating as she took a step back to stop looming over the brunette. "I have never seen you in the Gryffindor common room before...so you must be a Slytherin. Am I right, Hawkins?"

It would be good if her guess was correct. Regina had always had a soft spot for young Slytherins, after all.
