Overhead the stars shone brightly, just as bright as they did back home where light pollution was sometimes naught and all manner of constellations made themselves known against the inky backdrop of night. There were lanterns here and there, but for the most part they did little to obscure the sight.

It had been an exhausting yet magnificent day. First a train ride, then a boat ride, then the Sorting Ceremony... This little Badger was rightfully tuckered out, and yet he'd found himself entirely too restless all the same. His legs ached, and his brain whirred with the hundred thousand possibilities of what might come next.

More than that, though? He'd begun to feel a real pit forming in his stomach. A vacuous hole that seemed to be growing larger by the second.

Sebastian Sorrel had never before spent a night away from home. Not to visit with grandparents, or to have sleepovers with friends. He'd always been one of those... clingy... kids. He liked his bed, loved his parents, and never felt safe without them.

Yet here he was, miles upon miles away, in another country even, lay within the confines of a castle.

Or stood. He'd made his way out of the Hufflepuff Dormitories and slipped unseen into the courtyard. At least the stars were the same, he told himself. At least that connected him in some way to his parents. His father was often out at night, peering through his telescope. Most of the time he'd even invite Sebastian out with him.

Was his father out now? Were they looking at the same constellations in the night sky?

A small croak drew his attention back down, and he managed a smile in the direction of the creature carefully held within his cupped hands. "Miss your toad friends too?" he inquired of young Reed, the spotted toad. "I'll try and fix up your viv', make it more... swampy."

Ever since the school year had started there was the one familiar feeling in the pit of his stomach. The itching to get out and get away. Though was nothing to get away from, far from home and his reasons to be out and out at such egregious hours in the night, there was a familiar longing for familiarity. Alec had been desperate to get back to Hogwarts all summer, he knew it wasn't a longing for home, if anything if was the Gryffindor slipping back into his old habits again. The held onto him with force, escaping from them was hard, and often he did want too. Prefects and professors alike held issues with it, as for Alec, well, he would beg to differ on the issue at hand. What danger was the sky?

Taking in a deep breath Alec would exhale and he found himself reaching the courtyard. Finally, somewhere where he felt he had just that bit more freedom. A place where he felt no eyes were on him, for once there was no pressure to act a certain way, and Alec basked in the freedom. However, it seemed Alec had taken in all that freedom and his successes and victory a little too quickly. Realizing his mistake all too late when he noticed someone else out her. Likely not a prefect or a snitch of any kind.

He had a frog with him, Alec was less hesitant with creatures, less hesitant than last year, he still preferred to keep his distance. The other seemed to be speaking to the frog, as if it were a person. A low quiet chuckle escaped from Alec's lips at the sight of this. “swampy?” Alec would ask, giving the other a curious look as he interrupted their overheard conversation. It was interesting how he could hold conversation with the frog as if it replied, speaking right back to him, of course the frog didn't, and the other knew the frog didn't.

“Nice night out huh? Candles mean there's a lot less light pollution, you can get a pretty clear view of the stars.” Alec spoke, turning his head to looked of as he did so. Taking in the sky. Gorgeous, absolutely breathtaking as always. Alec could have sat and stared for hours if life allowed him so.

Glancing from the sky to the stranger, he overlooked them quickly, dissecting and inspecting them. “Call me Alec. You two are?” Alec asked he gestured towards the stranger and his frog. It looked like he was going to end up having some company tonight, maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all. “You look young. You're a firstie right?” Alec asked, tilting his head as he looked at the other.

No sooner had he finished his one-sided conversation than another voice entered the courtyard. Sebastian jumped slightly, his hands closing around the toad to keep it from hopping away with the sudden motion, and turned his head toward the newcomer.

Was it a prefect?

Was he about to be in trouble? School technically hadn't even started yet... Oh, dad would be so mad. Colour rose in the boys cheeks, before he realized that the other student was out here to watch the stars too. At least, he kept casting his gaze that way.

He didn't seem annoyed, or haughty. Nope, just another student out after bedtime.

"Yeah, nice," he replied, loosening up his hold so that the toad could peek its head back out again, "You uh... Stargaze too?" He followed the other boy's gaze up toward the blinking void, and for as long as he stared out so too did Sebastian. Then he felt his eyes on him again.

Alec. Lowering his gaze to properly look at the boy, he noticed some familiarities in his features. Honestly, it was almost as though Tobin was standing before him. Eerily similar, but not the same. It took him a little while longer to realize he hadn't actually responded.

"Oh, uh... First year, yeah. Sebast-- I'm Sebastian, this is Reed." He lifted up his hands to give Alec a better look at the toad, offering a sheepish smile as he did. "You uh, aren't gonna snitch on me are you..?"

It was bound to happen eventually, for Alec to run into someone jumpy. He hadn't expected tonight would be the night. Guilt came easy to him, of course Alec quirked an eyebrow in surprise as the boy jumped slightly in reaction to hearing him, he also felt guilty pretty quickly about accidentally spooking the kid. Rubbing the back of his neck he looked towards the other sheepishly, “sorry if I startled you.” Alec apologized, noticing the way he cupped his hand tighter to keep the animal he was holding onto from escaping out of his hands. Easy startled frog as well? Huh, interesting, Alec had never dealt with pets before.

The fourth year noticed the way in which the first year's face started to flush, he continued speaking on as if he hadn't noticed. He was probably embarrassed, Alec wanted to avoid calling attention to it if he was. The other agreed with him, there was silence for a moment until the other asked if Alec stargazed as well. “Yeah- Yeah I stargaze too.” He spoke, nodding as he stared up, letting the cool night air tickle his skin as he took in the view. “It's good to get out and get away once in a while, this gives an excuse to do just that.” Alec was comforted by being able to go out and see a thing with such familiarity no matter where he was, although he didn't even attempt to voice that bit to the other kid. It was information the other didn't need or at the point would even want to know.

He would then begin to to look at the other going through the motions of proper introductions. Starting with his name and asking if the other was a first year. Easy confirmation. Sebastion, a first year with his toad named Reed. His smile widened as Sebastion lifted his hands up so Alec could get a better look of the animal in his hands. “Cute pet.” Was the first comment out of Alec's mouth. He recognized cuteness when he saw it. Even if he thought everything that has and will ever existed is 'cute'. His eyes took in the toad for a few silent seconds more before Alec realized he was getting distracted and remember he needed to finish with introductions.

“Fourth year, I'm in Gryffindor. We're supposed to be the chivalrous ones or something? I don't know, it's strange to group people by traits.” Alec spoke, he was trying to think back to where he had seen the other from before. He'd seen a ton of faces, since the other was a first year, the easiest answer was the sorting. Alec was pretty sure he could pick out who he'd watched being sorted. “I thought I remembered you getting sorted. I think it was Hufflepuff? It's not a bad house to get into everybody there is so sweet that it's almost sickening.” There were quite a few hufflepuffs who had self-esteem issues with getting into their house. It was strange to Alec since Hufflepuff as a house was obviously far superior. Maybe it was the bad duelling season they had last year?

Sebastion smiled, asking if Alec was going to snitch on Sebastion. Alec shook his head. “No,” the answer was immediate, of course he wasn't going to snitch. Why would he? “I don't snitch. Besides, If I snitched you could snitch on me as well. Such is the ethics of two-sided blackmail.” Alec laughed and playfully winked at Sebastion. “How are you settling in? Classes easy enough and everything?” Alec asked curiously remembering how much a hard time he had adjusting when he first started Hogwarts.
