Sorting Ceremony Sept 2022

As soon as Marilyn entered the train, the only thing on her mind was the Sorting Ceremony. She had always dreamed of being in Hufflepuff, because both of her parents had been in that house.

Right when she entered the great doors of Hogwarts, the feeling really sunk in that she was actually there, and would be for the next seven years. She waited in the Entrance Hall until it was time to see the Great Hall. She was so excited to finally see it in person. After what felt like a year of waiting, it was finally time. She stepped inside and was so amazed by all of the decorations, and how many people were inside. The only thing she could really think about though was the sorting.

Finally, it was the time she had been waiting for for her whole life. She listened to all of the A, B, C, D, and E names. Finally, when the Sorting Hat called her name, she timidly approached the stool and thought in her head, “Please be Hufflepuff, please be Hufflepuff, please be Hufflepuff!” When she reached the stool, she sat down for only 20 seconds and the Sorting Hat yelled, “Must be Hufflepuff!”

Marilyn wanted to scream with excitement, but she knew that she couldn’t. She sat down at the Hufflepuff table, and for the whole meal, she just thought about how fun her time here would be!

Finally, a complete and final understanding has come that everything that is happening now is for real. When the person accompanying her said that miss Paisley had entered a school for wizards, she thought that it was about a certain school with a creative bias. Her aunt calls her "gingerbread," but that doesn't mean she's really a gingerbread. It was very strange. Paisley didn't know what to expect, because everything happened so quickly, there were so many events, and there were so few explanations. She tried to catch the smallest bits of information, but some of it escaped her ears, and the other part required careful consideration. Now she was standing in a crowd of other applicants and felt that she was suffering from chills. It was all so exciting…

Hogwarts Castle seemed scary to her. The Headmaster seemed very, very old to her. Some children pushed and stepped on feet. Peggy listened to other people's names, Hat`s shouts and applause from the audience. Once she was able to overcome the stiffness to wipe the sweat from her forehead. Several times she felt the need to rub her eyes. Do the people in the paintings seem to be moving? She wanted to get back on the train. Or for this ceremony to end as soon as possible. Or so that it never ends. All this together, perhaps. On the other hand, these events intrigued her. She didn't care which house she got into, but she did care about what would happen after.

«Paisley, Peggy.»

Finally, she sat down on a stool. Her legs refused to bend. When the hat was on her head, the girl jumped up and grabbed it with both hands. She had already realized that the Hat was alive and intelligent and capable of talking, but she did not expect that the Hat would conduct a monologue right in her head. Peggy looked pale, and felt like a mouse swatted by a mousetrap. Soon the Hat gave its verdict and Paisley, equally pale, slowly walked towards Ravenclaw's table.

Ethan walked inside the Great Hall. He was quite tense. His hands were trembling. As the Head Master spoke, he noticed a number of candles floating around. He was captivated. He can't believe it's happening. He has no idea of this since he was raised in the muggle world. He was particularly drawn towards the four long tables. There were a mouth-watering beverages and meals placed on top of the table. He learned about four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. All of the houses would be magnificent. He wondered. There were several students, and Ethan remained silent while the students were being shorted. Until he heard his name called.

“Smith, Ethan!” While walking through the crowd, the young man kept his gaze down. He was being watched by a pair of eyes. He could feel his anxiousness rising since he feared being the center of attention. Ethan sat down cautiously upon the stool. He closed his gaze so he couldn't feel the eyes that were observing him as the hat was placed on the crown of his head.

“Scared, are we?” He nodded slowly. When the hat talked to him, he felt his whole body tighten. “Oh, boy! There's nothing to be afraid of.” He slowly smiled as he swallowed the lump in his throat. “Let's start shall we?” The hat began talking in his head within less than a minute. “Ah! You are daring, faithful, fearless, and chivalrous! then you must be in-”

“GRYFFINDOR!”

The hat shouted as it declared which house he belongs to. When Ethan opened his eyes, he saw a crowd of people shouting for him. Especially the Gryffindor students who sat at the long red carpet table. He slowly walked through their table and sat the down in a empty seat.

𝐿𝑜𝒸𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃: The Great Hall, Hogwarts School

The day so far had been filled with countless feelings and wonderment, from her very first journey on the Hogwarts Express to traversing the lake on the boats to make her first-year entrance at the Ancient castle that called Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry its home, Alora was more than feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from the long day that only seemed to be beginning. Gazing up at the extremely large stone castle as the blonde heads up towards the entrance stairs the truth finally begins to settle in as the young girl realises that the life, she had led for the past 11 years was officially over.

No more would she be known as the young girl who lived on a farm, but she was now an actual witch, magic was real and all she once believed to be a fairy tale or a story to scare children was well and truly real. Everything that the girl had ever believed to be truth or fiction was now all in grey and right now that was hard to navigate but there was no way she would let these feelings of uncertainty and confusion get in the way of experiencing everything to the best of her ability. This day was one day that she hoped to remember for the rest of her life on this earth.

Making her way up the front steps and entering the place she would be calling home for at least the next seven years of her life, Alora alongside the rest of the first years take in the sights of their new home for the very first time as they wait patiently within the walls of the entrance hall before being directed in the direction of a place called the Great Hall. Stepping closer with the old stone staircases surrounding the area, Alora stands outside of two large wooden doors arched at the top as she gazes around her new surroundings trying to process the sights before the first years are prompted inside of the doorway.

Entering the large and surprising room Alora finds herself face to face with a tall and looming form as a male clad in some kind of armour to which she had never seen before. Smiling in greeting the young blonde bows her head gently at the man unaware of the fact that he happened to be the Headmaster of Hogwarts Solomon Lear. The room itself was extremely large, larger than probably most of her home back in Ireland the stone walls lined with a variety of coloured banners and magically lit sconces. The ceiling seemingly missing as a night starry sky is shown above hundreds of floating candles that light the ceiling above, four large lines of tables seemingly housing the rest of the students accompanied by a smaller table towards the front of the room where the adults seemed to be seated.

However, that wasn’t the most magical feature of the room for upon observing the area around her Alora would come to see several paintings spread around the room seemingly moving in some way which she couldn’t contain her excitement about as a small excitable squeal escaped through the blondes rosen lips. Distracted by the senses of the room around her reality is surely brought back to the front of the young girl's mind as the large wooden doors close behind them the man from before heading to a podium at the front of the room as the first evening begins.

Welcoming the new and returning students the man introduces himself officially as the headmaster of Hogwarts before beginning his announcements with a shocking unknown voice echoing through the hall. Learning about the sorting ceremony, the four houses of Hogwarts as well as the house cup Alora finds herself in even more shock as an old dusty hat suddenly begins to sing melodically as the sorting ceremony for the entire first-year students begins. One by one the first-year students are called forward to make their way towards the front where they take a seat as the sorting hat is placed upon their heads sorting them into the house they will call their families for the next seven years.

As a male student by the name of Ethan Smith is called to the front, Alora watches on as he is sorted into the house of Gryffindor her nerves building up almost to a boiling point as nausea begins to set into the bottom of her stomach clapping him on as she joins in with the rest of the school the moment of truth arrives as from the front of the hall she hears two single words “Shendrow, Alora!”. Reality setting in that her official life as a witch was upon her and it was time to leave the world she had known behind her, Alora takes a deep breath before making her way forward towards the sorting hat ready to start this next chapter of her life.

Taking a seat upon the wooden stool as the sorting hat is placed up the top of her blonde hair, Alora can’t help but feel a little startled when the hat exclaims “Ah… Interesting another prospect”. Looking around as the hat moves and speaks listening to each word that it says trying to internalise it to memory suddenly the moment is over as the hat exclaims “I know…. RAVENCLAW”. Sorted into the house of the studious and wise was no surprise to the young blonde as she breathes a sigh of relief that the eyes that had been upon her would soon subside, Alora stands up after the hat is removed as she smiles brightly making her exit towards the Ravenclaw table her new life had officially begun.

The towering mahogany doors slowly swung open, revealing a grand hall before her. As the first years shuffled inside, Isla gazed around her in awe, soaking in the striking hall The concourse seemed to stretch for miles, with four lengthy tables drawn out to the edge of the hall. Hundreds of students in black robes sat on either side of them with glistening golden goblets and empty plates before them, ceasing their murmuring once the first years had entered. The walls were decorated with animated portraits in magnificent golden frames above two roaring fireplaces carved into the walls on either side. Thousands of lit wax candles hovered in the air above the students. Isla pulled her hijab down defensively, as if the candles would drip blistering wax onto her head at any moment. Above the candles, the towering walls seemed to open up to a clear night sky, littered with glistening white stars. Not a single cloud was seen, much like the weather Isla had appreciated on her boat ride across the deep lake. She wondered what would happen to the hall if the weather wasn't favourable, or if there was a storm. Would they all get drenched? At the end of the hall was a horizontal table, with an array of differently sized chairs at which many adults sat, whom she presumed were professors or staff. Blue-tinted ghosts floated about the tables, casually chatting to the students as they weaved between benches.

A decently tall man was there to greet the first years as the grand doors behind them shut, seemingly on their own accord. The man, who he revealed to be Headmaster Soloman Lear, was a greying wizard with distant blue eyes which could pass as belonging to a dead man and a full beard. Although Lear seemed to be in good health, his skin had a certain sallowness that, paired with his 'lifeless' eyes gave Isla an uneasy impression, despite his warm expression. The Headmaster wore a shiny plate of armour wrapped tightly in minted leather, fitting him well.

As the door shut, the Headmaster limped down the passage between two tables, accompanied by respectable silence. His powerful voice filled the air as he spoke, silencing any low murmurs that remained.
"Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient."
Isla peered out from behind the rows of first years as a voice sounded from the front of the hall. It came from a hat, and quite a shabby one too. The witch's hat was frayed with a few sewn-on patches and torn edges, yet its snarky remark didn't appear affected by its less than favourable condition.

The Headmaster went on to explain what would take place during the ceremony and introduce them to the Head of Houses--Professor Iwasaki of Ravenclaw, Professor Pendrast of Gryffindor, Professor Jensen of Slytherin and Professor Wickham-Deakin of Hufflepuff. Then, Mr Lear unravelled a scroll he had retrieved from his clothes, and Isla watched on in shock as the parchment dropped to the floor. That is a lot of first years. Just then, the battered hat was set down on a small stool and it erupted into a song, which went on to explain a story of the founders and each of their houses. Isla listened half-heartedly, more focused on taking in the grand hall. The student body burst into applause of its tale, and once the claps died down the Headmaster began to read out the names of her fellow first years, and one by one they would be seated on the stool. After a moment of the hat pondering on their head for a varying amount of time, it would spew a house and the first year would go join the accompanying table. Isla watched this process closely, wracked with nerves. She didn't want to slip up anywhere, or go the wrong way.

Soon enough, the young Scot was summoned by a, "Ainsley, Isla!" from the Headmaster, and she squeezed past the thick crowd of young students. Isla quickly strode forward with an eagerness to get the ceremony over and done with as quickly as she could. She could feel the eyes of the entire hall regarding her every move, much to her unease. Isla nodded her head to the professor holding the shabby hat as she turned on her heels and sat down on the low stool. The oversized hat was placed on her head, and her nose was met with a musky scent of the many centuries it had spent in the castle. It felt like a weight on her head, or that might just be her worry dragging her down.

"I hope you aren't thinking bad of my smell," a voice echoed in her head, and she shot up with alarm. Was the hat talking... in her own mind? She felt naked, exposed by the invasion of privacy in her mind. Isla's gaze flickered upward to the brim of the hat, unsure on where to look.
"Hmm.. you're nervous, but it's not like you, is it? You're clever, you love your books... But I sense a strong ambition as well, and determination... Where to put you..." Isla listened silently as the hat milled over its decision, careful not to think anything bad of it. Maybe if she was rude, it would put her in a bad house, or refuse to sort her at all! I don't want that.
"Yet you're confident in your identity, you have a creative mind... Well, then... I suppose it better be... RAVENCLAW!"

The hall broke into applause as the hat called out the house's name, and Isla felt a wave of relief as the hat was whisked off her head. She beelined for the blue table which cheered the hardest, taking a quick seat on the long bench at the table. She hardly had time to think about what had just happened or what it entailed, just glad to finally be sorted into a house. The Ravenclaw glanced around at her housemates as the applause came to a halt and another name was called out. This was her home now.

Athena shuffled a bit so she could see the staff table better. In front of it stood a small stool with the sorting hat on it. She of course knew how this was gonna go, her mother had told her about it, but she was nervous anyways. And it didn't help that her last namestarted with an B, which meant she would be one of the first people to be sorted. Sh efelt her stomach lurch at the tought of sitting on a stool in front of every student in Hogwarts.

She couldn't see any of the friends that she had made on the train anywhere. But there was so many people here that she wouldn't even try to find them. She hoped that at least one of them would get into the same house as her. The headmaster started calling out names, one at a time. She didn't know the first people that he called out, and then... Athena Boot! She took a deep breath in and started carefully pushing through the crowd. When the other first years knew ehere she was they moved so she could easily step up on the platform. She went straight to the stool and sat down. She just wanted this to be over with.

The headmaster put the hat on her head. It was way to big, and everything got dark. She thought about which house she wanted to be in. Ravenclaw was the obvious aanswer, though Slytherin wouldn't be to bad, and not Hufflepuff either. SHe just didn't want to be in Gryffindor. She didn't think she fit in there. She didn' know what to do while she waited for the hat, so she concentrated on the words: "Not gryffindor". Of course there was good people in Gryffindor too, she just wanted to be with people who was like minded her. But why would the hat put her there if she didn't fit in? She was too scared to think straight. She waited another moment, and then... Ravenclaw! The hat almost screamed the words and Athena jumped slightly, startled. The hat got lifted of her head and she hurried to the Ravenclaw table, relieved and slightly overwhelmed.

As he walked into the Great Hall alongside his fellow First Years, Sebastian's gaze was once again drawn upward. He was remarkably surprised to discover that much like on their boat journey over the Great Lake, what lay above was a starry night's sky. In fact, it seemed remarkably reflective of what lay outside that evening, mostly clear skies yet with a hint of a brewing storm.

He could not help but shudder at the sight of it. Awe-inspiring, yet so fantastical that it bordered on impossible; something his brain couldn't quite make sense of. They were most definitely inside, it was not quite so cold as the breezy Scottish Highlands after all, yet looking up one could easily forget as much. Floating candles only added to the unnatural majesty of it all.

So busy was he observing the non-sky that he barely even caught sight of the Headmaster himself as he passed the man by. Certainly he did not look long enough to notice anything beyond the most obvious of traits, namely his long grey hair and wizened eyes. In his amazement and hurry to press on, he could be forgiven for outright overlooking the faraway look in the old man's gaze.

As they were all finally corralled into the center of the hall, one long line of students that in many ways came to feel suffocating, Sebastian did his best to peer over and around the others to get a glimpse at the head table. Various Professors sat there, though he recognized only two from his journey over here. The Caretaker, and the Professor of Astronomy... Oh, Sebastian still couldn't believe that was on the curriculum!

Various moving paintings tried to snatch his attention away, not by calling out to him of course merely by their existence alone. His gaze drifted left then right, though the booming, amplified voice of the Headmaster did a good job of setting it straight soon enough. He'd investigate the portraits soon enough... He hoped.

For now there were more pressing matters at hand.

Countless names were called ahead of him, surnames A through G, H through O, and so forth... It seemed never ending, and he soon came to find himself moving his weight from one foot to the other. Truth be told it was almost enough for the magic of the ceremony to wear off. Almost, but not quite. Each time the Sorting Hat was placed on a head Sebastian rose up onto his toes to watch the process. Sometimes it was quick to shout out a House, other times it seemed to be reflecting, debating silently with itself. Or at least, quietly enough that they could not hear what it had to say.

Always, though, a House was chosen.

And then, seemingly both after eons and hardly any time at all having passed, one name most familiar was called forth. "Sebastian Sorrel!"

Nerves wormed their way through his gut, where they sprouted wings and began to flutter around freely. He grasped one hand in the other, and lightly pinched himself into motion. One foot in front of the other, rinse and repeat, until he'd made his way through the remaining crowd of unsorted First Years and up the dais to where stool and hat awaited him. Sebastian swallowed down a lump in his throat, and then carefully sat upon the stool, facing out toward the four long tables; in that moment, none of the faces stood out. It was like observing an empty ocean.

He felt the hat set atop his head, and slowly closed his eyes. Inhaled, exhaled... Then opened them again.

"Nervous, are we?" the hat seemed to purr, remarkably without any real bias behind its tone, "Mm, let's see... Curious and creative; might do well in Ravenclaw." Sebastian tried to keep his eyes set forward, though it was incredibly tempting to peer up at the brim of the hat as though he could somehow see into its magical brain. "But no, your fate is simple... HUFFLEPUFF!"

It took him a few long seconds to realize that his House had been chosen, and he blinked in response. The hat was removed, and he slowly rose up and began to pad down the steps toward the tables. His gaze spread across the four tables as he willed his mind to remind him which was the correct one. Which colours belonged to Hufflepuff? Red was Gryffindor, he remembered that much from his Father, and Green was Slytherin... He headed toward the table filled with yellow, and sought out a seat from among the other Badgers.

As one who didn't even really understand the differences between the Houses - after all, Beric Sorrel had always been very careful to avoid pushing them one way or another - he felt rather neutral in response to being Sorted. Excited for what lay ahead, apprehensive, and already longing for home, he could only hope that the Sorting Hat had chosen correctly.

Deep down, he knew it had to have.

None of the stories her parents had told her about their Hogwarts years could have prepared Marisa for the sheer magnificence of the castle. It left her feeling slightly breathless, her stomach swarming with butterflies as she followed a couple of steps behind the large group of first years, taking it all in with a look of wide-eyed wonder. As the buzz of conversation died down, her attention was drawn to the curious, armoured man who had been at the door to greet them. “That’s Solomon Lear. The Headmaster,” someone had whispered as they approached, seemingly to no one in particular, but now the bearded man confirmed it himself.

Marisa couldn’t see much from her spot at the back of the group, so she allowed her gaze to wander over to the students seated at the four tables. Slytherin and Hufflepuff she recognised easily enough by their House colours, but the other two were new to her. Still, it wasn’t hard to guess at which was Gryffindor and which was Ravenclaw. Marisa’s eyes lingered on the blue table. After questioning her parents extensively about the four Hogwarts Houses and how the sorting process worked, she’d determined that Ravenclaw was the most likely place for her to end up. Either that or Hufflepuff, like her father. Honestly, she didn’t know which of the two she was hoping for.

Finally, the Sorting started and with each name that was called, the ball of nerves in Marisa’s stomach coiled tighter. It’s not as if she had to do anything up there - just sit on the stool and wait for the Hat to make it’s decision. How hard could it be? Nervously wringing her fingers, she watched as the first years were sorted, one after the other, until finally they reached the F’s.

“Fraser, Marisa!”

With her heart pounding almost painfully against her ribs, Marisa made her way up to the front and offered the Headmaster a timid smile as she took her seat on the stool. Her teeth caught the edge of her bottom lip, tugging nervously at it as the Sorting Hat was placed upon her head.

For a few tense moments, there was nothing. Then, finally, “Well now, what do we have here? Another Fraser, hmm?” Hufflepuff, Marisa thought. It had to be Hufflepuff. Nearly every Fraser in the past century had been sorted into Hufflepuff. “Hufflepuff? No, I don’t think so. Let’s see here… A very sharp mind, eager to learn, yes, and certainly not lacking in creativity. You could fit very well in Ravenclaw.”

Marisa held her breath, waiting for the Hat to call out its decision, but it remained silent. Why was it not calling out Ravenclaw? “Ah, but I sense more than cleverness and creativity. Yes, there is potential for greatness here. Well then, I suppose it’s obvious, isn’t it? SLYTHERIN!

Above was the sky full of stars, and down, amongst the students, were the candles lighting the tables. Cyrus had seen a lot of cathedrals, churches, just generally good-looking old buildings, but this one beat them all to it. Hogwarts outside was somewhat intimidating, towering above you. Inside, Hogwarts seemed welcoming, warm, happy, MAGICAL. The sight from the lake painted a darker image of it. Cyrus had grown up exploring the muggle world, so this was completely new, and that makes it BETTER. Now, to get sorted.

Cyrus... didn't doubt much where he would get sorted, sitting amongst the stressed first years. It was either Ravenclaw or Slytherin for him, although Ravenclaw seemed more likely since... since curiosity was what animated him.

Sitting down beside the people with who he was on the boat, he saw every student stand up each after the other, called to be attributed to a house that would define how they would be seen for the rest of their life, at the ripe, mature and wise age of not even 11.

Traditions suck more often than not. Why didn't they move the house placement to the second year? That'd be interesting. It'd let people develop and truly grow themselves within the magical world of school before being sorted and classified for the rest of their life. It was too hasty. But whatever, it was fun too.

"Sunder, Cyrus!"

Oh, there he went to be judged for the rest of his life. His turn to be berated by a hat older than the concept of a heliocentric solar system. Cyrus stood up, looked around at the other students, sweating out of theirs, and walked forward towards the hat. Now that it was his turn, he was a bit anxious. He wasn't prepared at all. He sat down, and the Sorting Hat was placed on his head.

"Oh, what do we have here? Would it be someone self-conscious? You're ambitious and have great ideas, but that is all driven by the need for knowledge and curiosity. RAVENCLAW"

Welp, looks like he was right. The hat was lifted, he stood and headed towards the Ravenclaw table, eager to meet new people.

Very little had been said to prepare Alora for this next chapter in her life. Sure Logan and Ursula had had comments and suggestions, but neither had truly covered things to assist her in this great new adventure. They hadn't told her about a test, or boats, or houses really. Only to respect the rules, and not to try and free the house elves, or exploding toilets might sound like fun, but probably best to let others do it.

Instead, she'd found herself entering a grand room without any bias. Her eyes widened at the sight overhead, and she openly gasped as she watched portraits move from their canvas. A few times she caught herself whispering questions and statements, but quickly quietened herself down. No, this wasn't a time to act like a tourist, so she kept her hands to herself in front of her and followed the rows of students.

When the hat corrected the headmaster she couldn't help an audible gasp, clasping her hands on her mouth once more. No, she wasn't going to be that person, and yet, hadn't she always been the chatter box throughout a movie asking what was going to happen next when clearly everyone was watching for the first time? After a bout of introductions, the hat began to...sing, and she listened. It sounded interesting, and she got lost in the words and rhythm. It wasn't until the end that she could truly pay attention, as each house was defined. So far it seemed neither felt like her, and she wondered if they would just send her home. Was this why her mother hated the wizarding world so much? Would she just become a squib? No, she couldn't think like that.

Name after name were called, and Alora Jean Graves stood still. Almost too still. She watched the hat wriggle and chat above some heads, and barely touch others. Would it eat her brain? Was this how the zombie apocalypse started? Her friend Mallory had snuck a copy of her father's The Walking Dead graphic novel at school one day, and they'd all been in trouble, and she'd had nightmare for days, but oh the joy it had brought.

Focus!

Alora brought herself back into the room, trying not to look at the older kids, or worse, the younger kids. The teachers seemed to have eyes on everyone which was perhaps the most scary. Was it magic? No, even at her school the teachers had a way of seeming to see behing their heads.

"Alora Jean Graves!

That was her name! She felt her palms sweaty. Her head nodded, but her legs stood in place.

Come on dear.

She nodded again and this time her legs didn't fail her. She marched forward and took a seat while the old tattered piece of leather was settled on her head.

Hmmmm....You had a brother here....yes I see...quite troublesome like him you'll be but...I see an ability for friendships and ambition...lots and lots of ambition....

SLYTHERIN!

Alora looked at the green table that welcomed her with applause and she beamed. A house, she had a house.
