Summer Duelling Extravaganza, Match: 3

A wink and a flash of a grin was given in response to Robert's encouragement. There was not much to say in return, it was a statement she'd made often enough herself, more an affirmation that they would stand together and have each other's back than what the obvious words stated. "We got this," she confirmed cheerfully. It was a beautiful day to win.
When the American boy - Elliot, she gathered - announced she should prepare to have her Downton Abbey rocked, her face twisted into an expression between amusement and confusion. A high five was not given, instead she called back, "By who, you? What is that even supposed to mean?"
Santario called for the start of the match, and with it came a stream of flames from Elliot's wand, but she easily danced out of the way of his spell and flashed him a teasing grin. "Gotta try harder if you want to rock my anything," she observed blithely, then lifted her wand to perform a spell of her own.
She'd practiced her new skill obsessively enough that it felt comfortable, reliable. Good enough to use in a duel, although not quite perfect yet, not as consistent as what Phaedra could produce. But it was good enough - when she willed her spell to split, it obeyed, a blast of wind shooting towards Manuela, the Brazilian girl, the other one towards Elsa, and Dee grinned a satisfied grin, sharp and wide. Sadly, her aim was not quite on point; while one blast hit Elsa, Manuela managed to dodge rather easily. Still, she'd count it as a win.
Distracted, Dee had barely noticed that Alec had raised his wand in her direction - whether in retaliation for her comment or according to a preplanned strategy, she didn't know - but although he seemed to attempt a wind jinx, nothing happened. A moment later, he was on fire and blindfolded. Well. He didn't seem too happy about it (couldn't blame him, really), and she giggled at his grumbling. "So you did learn new tricks!" she called, not really caring if his annoyance was genuine or overplayed. He'd get over it, and if not, well. Not really her problem, was it? "Don't be bitter, practice makes perfect! Proud of you for trying, anyway."
Her next comment was more quiet, directed at Robert next to her. "Nice shot!" she cheered, referring to the blindfold that was snugly wrapped around Alec's head, but only noticed a moment later that Robert hadn't fared quite as well as she had, if the swirling winds around him were any indication. Who had even aimed at him? She hadn't seen. "Remind me to put more dodging practice into our schedule."

Off to a great start. Despite having really no experience duelling with the American by her side, Manu felt a thrill rush through her as fire ripped from the ends of both of their wands, dancing heatedly towards the red Brits (hers) and the blue Brits (Elliot's). Her spell landed fair and square, tearing fire into the lionhearted British boy, who she could hear hissing in pain. Manu felt a giddy, relieved laugh bubble up from her chest, and she called out: "Não brinque com o fogo..." Don't play with fire... Of course, she was not without guilt, and the Brazilian's heart twinged; she always hated causing uncalled-for damage to others, but again, the duelling field wasn't real life. She could always apologise to him later. Maybe grab a jar of burn cream from the healing tent. For now, she had the heat to bring and a duel to win.
Winning, of course, meant dodging anything that tried to hurt her; offence was part of a strategy, sure, but so too was defence. The blue girl, at whom Elliot's fiery flick had been cast but who seemed to have dodged it as her clothes and skin were left uncharred, split a wind spell between Manu and the red girl on the field. Merda shit - whatever happened to girls having each other's backs? Luckily, Manu had seen the pretty brunette eyeing her before the duel started, and something in her warned her at the last moment to dodge to the side. Manu did so quickly, and the wind ripped right past her, on to some unseen target behind.
She cocked an eyebrow at the girl who had cast the spell her way. Really? Wind? Uncalled for. And Manu wasn't the type to get blown away, anyhow, even if she did sometimes look like a particularly strong gust could carry her cartwheeling into the air.
"A decent start," she muttered to her duelling partner as she readied to cast again. "Keep it up with your good work, right?"

Summer Duelling Extravaganza, Match: 3
Manuela Macedo / @Aly Salinger | @Robert Toukmond | @Dealla Prince | @Elsa Veronica BennettSYNERGY was always a weird concept for Elliot, half because he’d only learned about it through cracked versions of Pokémon that had subtitles in every earthly language sans English, half because he’d always pictured himself as the main, and half because he never struggled quite as much with English as he did with Mathematics. He was a quick learner, though, and by the time he’d joined the highly esteemed, awesomely amazing Ilvermorny duelling team, he figured that cooperation wasn’t so hard with your butts on the line.
Thing was, Brooklyn and the border of Brazil had to be at least a thousand miles away from each other, and by god did it show. Yes, he probably should’ve been more careful and yes, he should be nicer to the person who was basically obligated by game rules to save his butt, but he could and would upend the arguments to work in his favour. For all she knew, the elbowing could’ve been a pre-game ritual she’d just destroyed, sealing their fates of doom and causing the stadium to implode. It wasn’t, but that was besides the point. Or maybe it was. Elliot didn’t really have a point to him other than that, for as a hopeless teacher had said during after-school Mathematics class, he was obtuse. His elbow wasn’t, though, thus starting this argument that he only half understood. Quarter understood at best, really.
“Dude, my elbow could never kill you. It’d have to get a good lawyer first, duh,” he elaborated with equally elaborate hand gestures, now featuring a little less murderous arm joint.
They were greeted with an assortment of incorrect boasts, and some unfamiliar words courtesy of Downton’s teammate. “Why would I want to sort a boa?” He called out, though the comment was apparently directed at his partner without so much as a bad valley girl impression swinging his way. How a fellow redhead could be so ignorant, Elliot neither knew nor expected to be able to figure out without the help of their viking ancestors. For a fleeting moment he regretted not learning more Portuguese than soccer referees on the TV would allow, and then he considered the brief slip into the language that had marked their entrance and what that could mean. Ignorance was bliss, right?
Whatever, there were no boas to sort out other than the pressure and pride threatening to suffocate their triumph over a duel sure to go down in the stadium’s history. The Battle of Downton Abbey Boas began, and he casted with all the preparation of someone who had done most of his preparation last-minute but still rpepared. He could think of a million puns to accompany their flipping of the warm welcome to London, but his hopes for using all of them would be promptly extinguished by Prince’s eluding of his eternal flame that had left her distinctly unrocked. He regretted not joining the duels of summers past, just to get more experience with her style. If the light in his peripheral vision and hint of heat were any indications, though, Manuela had succeeded in her Brit-burning endeavours. Maybe he should join her fanclub after all this and make it up to a whole four people.
All this of course being a Gryffindor girl going for the gusty attack–an attack which he dodged, obviously, even if their viking ancestors weren’t so kind towards the boa boy. But, like, ouch. Emotional ouch, at least, because he wasn’t about to provide proof for the preschool taunts saying that he could be knocked over with some wind. Was she a super-secret member of the Manuela Macedo fanbase, sent in by a super-secret spy agency with a camera in her eyeball to get footage for Instagram edits? Eh, she’d have to wait until the fantastic end to their apparently decent start to get an autograph from her idol, and he’d have to use the next round as a way to convince Manuela they were way more than decent.
“You know it, girl,” he said with a reignited grin, ignoring the fact she’d probably reject the intimately friendly label of ‘girl’ from him. “Rock ‘em on their merda boas, yeah?”

Robert grinned as the duel started with a (somewhat literal) whirlwind of activity. He always loved a duel’s start, when everyone is fresh and the game’s strategy is yet to become clear. In his mind, the friendly banter makes the start all the more enjoyable. The boy couldn’t help but giggle at the American’s response to his Portuguese greeting, although in hindsight it became unclear whether this was an actual joke or merely linguistic ignorance. However, assuming stupidity on the part of others often made life much more depressing, especially when there’s another option. “Honestly, fair enough!” he responded with an amused smile.
As spells started flying, Robert started to concentrate on the duel. Although he managed to hit his target, he was caught unaware by the second gust of wind coming from Elsa’s wand. “Nice one, Nicky!” he exclaimed. At Dee’s comment on dodging, he gave a small laugh. “Yeah, fair enough,” he said, directing his comment to his teammate.

Nicky frowned a little as she got hit by a spell. The first round wasn't ideal for their team. However, they still had multiple rounds to go and she knew that even though her and Alec had never played on the same team before they were both strong duellists and could do much better. She kept her eye on their opponents and smiled slightly at Alec when he asked his question.

Manuela would take aim at Elsa with a phenomenally cast spell; unfortunately for her, Elsa would evade it. Elliot took aim at Robert to cripple him even for the shortest amount of time. Something he would be successful in as Robert’s walnut wood wand went flying from his hand.
Alec wasn’t going to allow himself to stay blinded for long despite the flames burning his flesh. He reached up and successfully removed his blindfold, but his celebrations would be short-lived. Robert took advantage of the situation he put Alec in, sending flames barreling across the battlefield. Alec would be engulfed by flames once more, and they would linger though smaller than the first round.
Elsa and Dealla would both target Manuela with the same spell. Black strips of cloth would shoot from their wands and collide with each other, merging into one strip before wrapping tightly around Manual’s face.

His opponent giggled at his overplayed reaction, Alec couldn't help the small smile that edged onto his lips as he was able to pick out the sound. Her words, her response, Alec fake coughed to mask a chuckle in reaction to them. He was taking none of the game talk seriously, he soon began to realize it was however going to be a fun source of entertainment throughout the duel. “Merlin,” Alec whispered shaking his hand, “you really know how to antagonize a person Prince.” His comment was hardly serious, preferring the light-hearted in which he had leaned into dramatizing his reaction. Alec didn't want the duel to be anything personal, for anything said to be taken personally. Alec was avidly trying to avoid any mean comments that would make an attempt to slip through his lips.
Reaching for the back of his head with his right hand, Alec would to undo his blindfold. The young teen would focus on the grip of his wand hand, getting through game talk. He didn't have much a hustle, nothing for the foreigners, of course though, his speech would once again be directed at Dealla. Playfully he rolled his eyes at her sarcastic encouragement from underneath the blindfold. “Wow, thanks, I appreciate the encouragement,” this blindfold was particularly tricky to get off. “Shall we dub you duel cheerleader now, or wait until after?” Alec gently teased.
There was no use trying to avoid spells with this blindfold on, thus he didn't, when he'd managed to almost pull his blindfold off he felt a spell hit him. He flinched back as his blindfold fell to the ground and he found himself with more flames he had to deal with. He avoided a bitter approach with his dramatized reaction, and smirked. Yes, he smirked. He decided to make fun of his failure, take it in his stride. “Clearly, I am the best duellist around.” He would proclaim, to no one in particular. Alec glanced towards the flames that engulfed him. “I am after all on fire. Literally and figuratively, mostly figuratively, but I guess pretty literally as well- there's so many flames.” He took this route because... why not? Alec was having fun and it was reason enough to do it. “Not to mention I'm good-looking, hot,” his head turned to wink at everyone who had sat down to watch the duel.
Having a little self-confidence and knowing you're good looking never hurt. Besides he'd needed to fit the word hot in there somewhere, he was particularly warm as the flames were getting to him. Alec watched as a spell sprung from Elsa's wand, hitting the foreign team. “Great spell work,” he complimented to his teammate with a hum.

With Robert buffeted by winds and Alec on fire, the international team was the only one that hadn't taken any hits yet. Not for lack of trying, but Manuela had easily evaded the winds Dee had sent at her earlier, so perhaps it was time to give the girl her undivided attention. The blindfold she conjured flew in a beautiful, straight arc - only to collide with Elsa's spell who had apparently had the same idea. Dee cursed to herself as she watched the single blindfold wrap itself around the Brazilian girl's head. If she'd known, she could have chosen a different spell... but too late for that.
"Yes, I am your biggest fan, your most ardent supporter," was her response to Alec, a cheerful smile on her face. "Or actually, that's probably yourself. Ardent and all." His continuing proclamation about his own state of hotness drew a snort instead, but there was an amused spark in her eyes. So he was rather entertaining when he wasn't being a complete ass. Interesting. "Yes, you're smoking," she commented drily, shaking her head. Hopefully he didn't overdo it.

Once again Robert managed to hit his target, although the fact that said target was already blindfolded made the feat slightly less impressive. Unfortunately, the young boy also was once again unable to get out of the way from the incoming spell, which proceeded to tear his wand out of his hand. Robert grimaced with annoyance. He could deal with wind or even fire, but being unable to partake whatsoever in the duel around him somehow always felt like the worst possible effect from a spell.
