Hydra, like in the mythology
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
I finally had my mother's consent. When she said, "You're in your third year, let's say you're mature enough to take care of a pet" I was extremely happy. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been asking my parents when I could finally have a pet. They said I was so young, that I would get bored, that I wouldn't be able to look after it. They were wrong and I was going to prove them wrong.I pushed open the door of the Magical Menagerie as my mother went to renew my stock of potion ingredients. It was the beginning of July and usually Hogwarts students buy their supplies in the middle or at the end of the holidays. As I was going to Hogwarts summer camp in August, I wanted to have time to read all my new books. That's why we came to Diagon Alley at the beginning of July. "Good Morning" I said to the shopkeeper before walking into the shop.
I walked past the Pygmy Puffs' cages, wrinkling my nose. A little pink ball of fluff? Not even in my dreams. Same reaction to the rats. It's a weird thing. I paid more attention to the spiders. Spiders are animals that have always fascinated me. Sorry, arachnids, not animals. As I was watching a spider that looked like a tarantula, I heard noises behind me. "Human!" Surprised, I jumped before turning around. No one was there.
I smoothed the sides of my green dress before turning back to the spiders. I thought I could adopt one. Never mind what my parents would think. "Human! Look here!" Sounds of something banging on glass. I turned to see a snake, not much bigger than my forearm, banging its head against the glass of its vivarium. "Is that you talking?" Basically it made sense. My question didn't really matter. I just wanted to be sure. I walked towards the snake and it climbed up one of the branches of the vivarium to be at my level.
The snake was beautiful. Black, thin, about forty centimetres long. It was alone in the vivarium and looked overexcited from the speed at which it climbed up the branch. "Me talk" I sure loved that snake. "Well! It's been at least a year since I've seen anyone interested in a snake." The shopkeeper came closer as I conversed with the snake. So I wasn't the only one who found these reptiles amazing? At first glance, I wasn't much smaller than the man. So I stared at him and said, "These are the most fascinating animals I have ever seen. It's sad that so few people are interested in them."
"Keep me! Keep me! I could hear and understand the snake but I did not show it. Whenever I came face to face with someone near a snake, I tried to remember the promise I made to my parents when I discovered that I spoke Parseltongue. "She's excited today. Are you thinking of taking her?" I looked at the snake and thought yes. And even that I was going to take her, not that I was thinking of taking her. "Does she have a name?" "Not yet. That's for you to decide."
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" "You're welcome. Do you have a name?" "Hydra" I walked out of the menagerie, Hydra comfortably ensconced in the little vivarium in my hands. The vivarium isn't very big, but it still recreates a small game in the forest. I would make a bigger one at home. I join my mother in the potion ingredients shop and I can see that my mother is holding back from screaming. "You bought yourself a snake." It was an observation. She was resigned to the fact that her little Astoria was a snake lover. "Her name is Hydra."
