Emma nodded, her lips pulled down into a frown as she rubbed her right arm with her left hand. “Yes.” Emma felt more tears coming to her eyes, just thinking of how horrible this whole situation had turned out. While she didn’t particularly enjoy detentions, at least she had been doing something right and enforcing the rules. But that had all gone horribly wrong. She had been defeated, and honestly was wondering why she had the badge. Obviously she couldn’t enforce the rules satisfactorily. “I dunno. I think they likely took it with them, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it back. And honestly, if I can’t even enforce a simple detention, maybe it’s better if I didn’t. Though obviously the badge has to be gotten back, because they might be able to take advantage otherwise.” Emma’s brow furrowed as she thought of the things that unscrupulous people could do with a prefect’s badge. Though she didn’t really know Regina or Draven enough to know if they would do those things or not.
Emma continued the hunt, getting down on her hands and knees to look under the various instruments strewn around, but also as a method of avoiding Evelynn’s gaze. Because she was just imagining the look of disgust that would probably be on her face. Admittedly, Emma knew that it was just her own thoughts, and not the reality of the situation making it out as worse than it truly was. But she still hadn’t figured out a way to turn things around. Usually she just watched or listened or read something sad, and let herself sink into the depths of despair for the night and she’d be fine the next morning. Or if not fully fine, at least on that path. Probably not the healthiest of methods but it worked.
She didn’t bother to answer the older prefect’s question, already having done so in her little mini-rant, instead she asked, curious to know if the pair had done something like this before, “Have you heard of them? Have they done something like this before?” Emma asked almost hopefully. Although really how likely was that to be true? All of the prefects seemed so accomplished and powerful that Emma really couldn’t see them ending up in this situation.
Emma cringed slightly, not at Evelynn’s tone, but solely because she took it as her being a coward, someone who would rather run away and get someone bigger rather than standing on her own two feet. Standing, she looked down at her feet, her cheeks turning slightly pink, and she spoke quietly but clearly. “I….ummm..didn’t think of that. I just kind of might have been overly confident in the whole prefect thing, and didn’t think they would do something because of that. But I’ll keep that in mind moving forward.” Meanwhile the slight awkwardness of this part of the conversation would remain and play in her head multiple times before she could let it go….or at least forget it enough to not have her rethinking the situation and what she could have done better. “I’ll definitely get help earlier next time. I probably should have just let them leave and asked for help in the first place.” Emma felt by sharing what she should have done differently, it might make the older prefect see that she could learn and be better. Although she still wasn’t sure about the whole deserving to be a prefect bit, she at least wasn’t as down as she had been if only because she could convince herself that she had learned a lesson from the whole thing.
Emma looked over and saw that Evelynn seemed to be in the same spot. “Did you find my wand?” Emma said brightly, missing the tool that she hadn’t even known about less than a year ago. But she also wanted to practice more spells. After all, this had just made her even more determined to study even harder, so that she was never in this situation again. Especially because hopefully someday soon, she would be on the dueling team and would need to have those skills to win for her house.
Shaking her head slightly, Emma brought herself back to the present. “They were in Hogsmeade, and since neither were third years, I gave them detention.”

"I have heard of them, yes.." Evelynn replied, somewhat distractedly.
Her circular pacing around the base of the chandelier was still being met with an absence of that odd shadow she'd seen, despite her shifting the point of her wand to varying angles, its beam of light directed towards the rafters in an effort to replicate what she had previously done.
"But I have not known either of them to do something of this nature."
Admittedly, Mirador was something of a mystery to her. Her experience of him was limited to the duelling matches she had witnessed and a select few other extra-curricular errands or games. Being Slytherin and of a younger year, their paths really did not cross often otherwise. Miller, on the other hand, was another story. The girl had been pointed out to Evelynn as someone to keep her eye on, but until now had kept a low profile befitting someone of her pureblood status. To say Evelynn was disappointed by this rebellious streak would be a drastic understatement. She had hoped to be able to say that the concern was not well-placed.
"We will try to get your badge returned," Evelynn attempted to reassure, although she knew it wouldn't necessarily be a possibility. It could be traded away, or hidden, or lost. But as long as it didn't resurface in a more nefarious situation with devious intent, none of those would be the worst of outcomes. "Or at the very least, you will be provided with a new one. That was a very reasonable rationale to provide them detention.. they ought to have just accepted it without complaint. They had gone out of bounds and were caught. You were not in the wrong for doing as you did."
And then that shadow, like a sliver of a shadow angled away from the otherwise perfectly smooth rafter. "There," she breathed, tilting her head to the side and nodding her chin in the direction of the light that highlighted the imperfection. "I am almost certain there is something there. One moment..."
Dimness would descend upon them as the illumination from the tip of her wand sputtered and died as she deliberately dropped the effort to maintain the spell. With light still being provided by the other candles and chandeliers in the room, it wouldn't be entirely dark, but the imperfection she had pointed out would certainly disappear into the distant shadows.
"Accio wand," she commanded instead. [d20:6+15 = 21, success]
For a second, she'd thought nothing had happened. But then a rolling clattering of wood on wood sounded from above, followed by the clinking as wood tinged against the metal of the chandelier, setting it to rocking just slightly. One of the candles was altogether altogether knocked free, the thin pillar of wax falling to the floor, its flame snuffed by the descend and its body cracked with the impact. And a moment later, Evelynn found her free hand in grip of a wand that was not her own.
With a self-satisfied smile, Evelynn turned and held the wand up by the butt of its hilt, wand tip pointed to the ground. "Does this look familiar?"

Emma perked up when Evelynn mentioned she knew of the two students who had frozen her. All Emma could think was that Evelynn might be able to tell her that this had happened before and they were terrible miscreants who made a habit of attacking poor prefects. But that was also a bit of a stretch. Otherwise they probably would have been in bigger trouble than Emma could dish out. She’s just have to wait and see what happened. Though Emma hoped that they could find her wand soon. Even though she was muggle-born, she had become used to the comfort of carrying it around and now it felt like she was without a wallet or something similar.
She sunk in on herself slightly as Evelynn confirmed that they had not been known to do things like this. Letting out a slight “Oh.” Emma scrunched her nose. “I mean it makes sense that they haven’t done this before otherwise they likely would have been in much more trouble. But still, I almost hoped they had been. Silly right?” Honestly, she didn’t know why she had expected any different. She could feel the tears pushing to rise to her eyes again, but she forced herself to swallow a few times, trying to rid herself of the ball that had formed in her throat. She was tired and just wanted to go throw herself on her bed and have a good cry. She’d likely feel better than, probably still a bit stupid but still things couldn’t get worse.
Emma nodded, not willing to give rise to the doubts that she had about remaining a prefect. It seemed silly to give up at the first sign of trouble but this seemed a pretty big thing especially when the main role was to enforce rules. Emma felt happy that at least her detention had been valid. It would have been even worse if it would have been a mistake altogether. “I guess. And yes, really I don’t understand why they didn’t do that. They were spouting a bunch of things about unworthiness and whatnot. But at least I was following the rules, it wasn’t like I was giving them detention just because I wanted to. If rules are broken, then there are consequences.” Emma didn’t even know why she mentioned that. Evelynn was a prefect as well and would know that more than she, a lowly first year prefect.
Catching something, but not quite hearing what Evelynn said, Emma said “Sorry? I didn’t catch that.” Then pausing a moment as Emma turned to face Evelynn, she said “Oh I hope so! It feels weird not having my wand. And I really don’t want to have to get a new one. That would make this whole thing even worse than it already is.” Emma watched carefully as Evelynn use a spell, one she hadn’t heard of yet to retrieve what she hoped was her wand. Carefully looking around, slowly moving her head from side to side to see if she could catch sight of her wand….doing something? Emma didn’t know what the spell was meant to do but under the context could suppose that it was meant to make the wand do something to make it more visible.
Hearing a clear clink, Emma turned to catch sigh of a candle falling. Gasping Emma was frozen, witing to see what would happen. She let out a breath of relief when the flame went out by it’s fall, she missed her wand finding it’s way to Evelynn’s hand. Turning back to Evelynn when Emma heard her speak, Emma gasped and moved forward, carefully taking the wand from her. Turning it, she carefully inspected it first to make sure it was hers, and then for any damage that might have occurred. Although really who else would have lost their wand in this room? “ Yes, it is! Thank you! That’s a really cool spell.” Emma hugged her wand to herself, then blushed as she realized what she had done. “Sorry, it’s just….I might be attached? I mean I have been using it all year so…” Emma didn’t know what that meant so she just left it there, and figured that even if Evelynn didn’t get it, she would at least pretend to understand. Or at least that’s what Emma would have done. So truly she didn’t know what Evelynn would do.

The self-satisfied smirk would lessen, softening to a more gentle expression as Emma's face brightened with recognition. Well, that was at least one mystery solved for the night, and Evelynn was pleased to see her younger counterpart rush forward to accept her lost companion. "It is rather a useful spell," came her own agreement to the girl's exaltation. "You will learn it in your third year. I have come to rather appreciate its practicality, so practice well when you do learn its theory."
With that, she would relax her posture, shifting her stance in the room to peer around. There really wasn't any use to lingering. The perpetrators had long gone. As had the badge. Miss Wynn was now recovered, and gleefully hugging her wand, apparently. To that, Evelynn had paid no mind until an apology had been voiced, prompting the return of her attention. She would merely shrug a brow, unbothered and unjudgmental. "In some ways, your wand becomes your most trusted companion. There is nothing shameful in your reaction."
"What is shameful," she went on, deciding to slip her wand away into the safety of the hidden sheath on the interior lining of her left boot, "is that those two would have the audacity to undermine the authority you hold as a prefect. I can only imagine they were spouting nonsense about unworthiness as discrimination against your age or year..." She pursed her lips at the thought, straightening once more. "But you were selected by Professor Iwasaki and are, in all intents and purposes, an extension of him. To disrespect and disobey you is to disrespect and disobey him. That is not at all acceptable. We will, of course, have to confront them properly about the matter. But if you desire to take no part in that, I will understand, and can do so on your behalf."

Emma frowned slightly at the thought of waiting until third year, mainly because it seemed so useful, especially on those days she was feeling particularly lazy and didn’t want to go back upstairs to retrieve something, or whatever. But still there must be a good reason as to why, and she could just be appreciative that Evelynn had known the spell and been able to retrieve her wand. Speaking of, she was glad that Evelynn understood her feelings. Carefully rubbing it slightly with her shirt, Emma returned her to her pocket, carefully patting it after she did so to make sure it was somewhat secure. “That makes sense especially once you’re older and had even more time than I’ve already had to bond with it.”
Emma froze, not sure what she had expected but hoping that the subject had been dropped, if only because she’d prefer not to think of them or the incident for much longer than now. Maybe even months. But she knew it was necessary to face the whole thing and think it over. Maybe even play the guilt game that she knew her brain could do so well. Emma reluctantly nodded, understanding where Evelynn was coming from, and having already voiced her opinions about there being a mistake or something like that, Emma squeaked as she said “We? Shouldn’t we get a professor or something?” Pausing for a moment, she blushed. “I mean you are very competent, obviously but I’m next to useless as has been proven. But still, it’s not fair to shove that off on you. After all it’s my problem.”
Waving her hands slightly, Emma paused her out loud thinking there. But it was true, maybe she would feel better after having confronted her tormentor’s and she wouldn’t be alone at all, so it wasn’t like they could likely pull the same tricks. Nodding, Emma said definitely if a bit quietly. “I’ll go with you. It makes more sense honestly.” Emma felt like she was going to the gallows with the pronouncement but at least her brain was silent for the moment.
