Summer Camp '22 Big Annual BBQ

Monday ↭ August 1st ↭ Late Afternoon
The morning was marked by the colorful chaos that comes with a meeting of the schools. Students from all sorts of backgrounds carting all kinds of containers, erecting tents, hoisting pets to their personal quarters, and hashing out who their Summer roommates might be. There was the race to find an optimal spot, followed by the buzz of too many voices reuniting, bickering, or catching up. When one has gone through all the work of setting up camp, sitting down to a tasty outdoor meal is the perfect way to recover. The big annual barbeque was staged atop a small hill near the center of the event. On one side sprawled the campgrounds. Tents were clustered together in a wild variety of colors, shapes, and sizes stretched out like a quilt beneath them. In the other direction stood the stadium, towering tall against the setting sun. Its ancient architecture hummed with the energy of former tournaments, glowing with history, shining with the promise of more magnificent matches to come. While the view was wonderful, the gathering itself was a sight to see.

Long tables bore a broad assortment of drinks, treats, foods and snacks. For the thirsty were foaming flagons of virgin butterbeer or vibrant jugs of juice, as well as tremendous pitchers of iced coffee for the adults (or teenagers suffering from an early onset of caffeine addiction). Several water stations were arranged around the event to beat the heat- at least, heat for those used to cooler temperatures. London in July hardly exceeded twenty-five degrees celsius. To further help with keeping cool, students would be treated to a broad variety of sweets fresh from Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour. Stored in a bin made of unmelting ice were creamsicles, rainbow popsicles, and all manner of ice-cream flavors ranging from the standard "Berry Delight" to "Strawberry Peanut Butter". The grills were covered in cuisine influences from around the globe, featuring a multitude of meats and a variety of veggies, even a few fruits. Sausages to turkey legs, grilled peaches and pineapple, roasted shroom steaks and stalks of asparagus sent a bouquet of sweet and savory aromas into the air.

In charge of cooking were the tried and true house-elves. In the spirit of the event, they wore Jolly Roger flags tied like togas, merrily doddering around under the weight of tremendous food portions. From platters stacked with grilled goodies, to giant vats of flobberworm stew, drinks and jars of condiments, they waddled about their duties enthusiastically. Though they looked like little more than dutiful chefs, they doubled as deterrents for fighting. House elves were more attentive than they appeared. Odd as it was to see something "muggle" present at a Hogwarts function, there was what seemed like a limitless supply of paper plates or bowls and plastic utensils. Irregular, yes, but an additional ward against accident and injury. Everyone was due to have a safe, normal, food-and-fun filled first night. Maybe.
Welcome to the BBQ! Eat, drink, and be merry. Remember: the house elves are on alert, making sure there's no dueling, pranks, or other such nonsense. Post at your leisure, just know that troublemakers will likely lose their chance to attend and have to eat alone in their tents :'( sad!

Another summer camp, oh had time flown so fast.

It almost seemed like yesterday they were all arriving to bask in the sun once more. This time, Percival had been needing it more than ever. For as long as he could remember, it was the hardest and most challenging year of his life. Not only had a hag slug cursed him for most of the year, but the person he loved most too. They were close to losing each other, but now they could finally catch up and be kids as they were supposed to be.

Percival had talked with San in the dorm a few days during their daily sittings by the fire. He didn't know when she'd be coming, but Gray was going to be walking about and having food nonetheless. For now, he was walking around and taking in the atmosphere. With him, was a fresh copy of the daily prophet that was sure to be looked at at some point. It was a nice change being at peace and not sick anymore...

Before he sat down, he managed to order a small basket of lightly seasoned chips to nibble on as he lounged on a bench. Plopping one into his mouth, he unraveled the paper and calmly began reading its contents, a deep breath of relaxation escaping his lips.

This is what he needed right now...

Finally, food. EmmaLee was starving considering that she hadn't eaten since breakfast and she hadn't really had much of a breakfast. She was too excited and nervous to eat more than a banana and half a blueberry muffin before shoving her mother and stepfather out the door and down the street to the quidditch stadium.

Then she had spent the rest of the day and the afternoon registering, signing up for a tent, finding her tent, introducing herself to every single one of her tentmates, and finally having a confusing conversation about prank wars with those tentmates. They would definitely be doing the prank wars, now that they had realized that it was an official event and no one was going to get in trouble for it.
Once that had all been settled and she had claimed her tent, she had smelled the food and realized how very hungry she really was and well, off she went.

EmmaLee's nose and stomach found the section of the food that was clearly for the Beauxbaton students. Her child heart leapt at the various foods that she hadn't regularly eaten in two years.
Her mother was a wonder cook who continued to make French food when they moved, but more often than not made American style food that her stepfather preferred. So when she saw the various French foods such as côte de boeuf (beef rib) and piperade, she made a beeline for that end of the tables and started filling a plate with a little bit of almost everything. Tomato tart with ricotta cheese, ratatouille, roasted artichokes, fougasse. There was coeur à la crème and yogurt cake with a variety of sauces to put on top (she, of course, chose strawberry), along with other sweets like eclairs and macarons. Her strategy at picnics was to get a bite or two of everything that she thought was tasty and then she wouldn't get too full and feel ill.

EmmaLee also grabbed some strawberry lemonade and sat down at an empty table to eat. While she ate, she people watched. She watched all of the various other students gathering food and was interested to note which students would try new foods and which ones seemed to stick to their own country's food. Such as when a clearly Mahoutokoro student sampled a good amount of the Russian food and a Beauxbaton student tried the Brazillian food, or when an Ilvermorney student grab something from every single country.

She also liked watching the general interactions between the various students. The students who were friends and those who were enemies. Those who almost grabbed the same food but didn't know each other, so they would laugh and be slightly awkward, but still be friendly about a small, shared interest. She sat with a small smile on her face as she people watched and ate her favorite foods.

The last time they were there was not a pleasant memory. Shadows of Victor swam in the back of her mind, and with his memory came the memory of Vladimir, which was not something she had truly dealt with yet. In typical San style, she shoved it down and decided not to deal with it. The noirette paused for a moment taking a deep breath while a hand ran through her hair. Everything will be fine. An attempt to convince herself and a reminder that she would see Percival for the first time in a month. Her grandmother had been keeping her busy all summer with learning how to run the estate, so busy she only had time to write him letters. That also brought the wonder of if Felix would be in attendance. While they were constantly writing letters to one another, it paled in comparison to the times they could hang out.

Food first, then you can find people. She nodded while walking up to the house-elves. “May I have two halloumi burgers and some chips?” Her French accent had returned stronger as it usually did when she spent time at home. Merci.Thank you. Once her food was in hand, she turned around and glanced over the growing crowd, but it wouldn’t take long for her eyes to spot a mop of familiar curls. Oddly she found herself self-conscious, wondering how Percival would take her growth spurt. She had neglected to tell him she had grown 10 centimeters (4 inches) in a month. It made her rather tall compared to others, now standing at 170 centimeters (5’7”). There was only one way to find out, and she started to make her way over to his table.

Her skirt flowed just above her knees as she walked through the throng of people. “Percival.” She greeted him, a joyful twinkle in her eyes and a smile spreading over her lips as she set her food down across from him. “I trust your month home was good?” San asked even though they had been writing.

Finally. Food. Her stomach grumbled angrily, no longer wanting to wait. She had not eaten all day, too much had been going on. Also, she rarely ate breakfast anymore. Her step dad said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day since it gave you fuel to get working. Reena, however, called bull on his statement because she worked just fine without breakfast or his help. But dinner- oh dinner. She felt the heat from all sides, and the last thing she wanted was a hot meal. But she was so hungry, and the food smelled so good. So much for going vegetarian. She fanned herself with her hand and walked over to the house elves. She looked at all the food and the tiny elves running around. She felt a bit sorry for them. She thought for a little bit and decided on what she really wanted. When she got to order, she looked at the house elf with a hopeful look. "Um, do you have Pollo Asado? Okay, so can I get Pollo Asado and- wait- make that a Pollo Asado taco. And some Elotes, please. Thank you. " She opened her mouth to say more, but couldn't think of anything else.

Soon the food was in her hands and her mouth was watering to the point where she didn't even want to sit down. But she found a bench and sat herself down. She set the plate on her lap and picked up one of the tacos, taking a huge bite. About a fourth of it slid out the back and onto her hands. She merely shook the food off onto her plate and scooped it back into her taco. She didn't care if it was gross to use her hands, it was all going into her mouth. As she ate, she looked around at the people. She listened to various conversations around her, but it was far too much to take in. Rich smells carried through the air from every corner, kids ran around like confused ants. People shouted to their friends or merely talked happily. She even heard some distant singing. But despite everything happening all at once, she felt a bit peaceful watching it all.

"Finally, it`s time for some food!" Rita thought when she saw the barbecue table with a variety of food and drinks, "It`s been a busy day moving into the tents and interacting with friends. I haven`t eaten much for the day and now it`s time to have a feast!" She looked around the stadium. On those beautifully decorated long desks, there were some meat and sausages lying on the plate waiting to be roasted as well as butter beer, sparkling juices, and coffee. There are also ice creams of different flavors. Rita quickly grabbed some meat and a cup of orange juice, before standing near the barbecue stand to cook the meat. It is still a bit hot near the fire, so as she was cooking the meat, she began to drink the cool juice while thinking "This juice is so cool! It really is the perfect companion for a barbecue!" After a few minutes, she put the meat into her mouth, "Wow, the meat is so juicy! The sausages are a bit crispy on the outside, but the inside is still tender and juicy! I wish I could have more, but I want to leave some stomach for the ice cream!" After finishing the meat, she took a chocolate ice cream, sat on the chair, and looked up at the sky. The weather today was quite nice, as the bright stars can be seen clearly. "It was a night to eat and chill. So far so good," Rita thought looking up at the sky, "let`s call it a day and take a rest in the tent when the barbecue finishes. I am enjoying the camp so far and I hope I can continue to have fun for the entire month!"

Greta was starving. The long travel from their homeland to London had been enough of a trek to work up an appetite, but then there had been the tent selections and settling in. Needless to say, her stomach had been growling for a good while now and she had made a hasty retreat from the tent as soon as it seemed appropriate to do so to make her way to the BBQ. She'd let her nose be her guide, the aromas on the summer breeze almost intoxicating in the way they lured her to the feast. And both eyes and smile widened at the sight of the seemingly endless options.

Hopping in line, Greta had snagged up a paper plate and utensils and set herself to trying to make what was sure to be an impossible decision: what to eat. There was just too much to choose from. And it wasn't even limited to those dishes on display on the tables. Every now and then, she would spy a school elf as it walked past carrying giant trays of loaded foods. Her feet would falter and shuffle after them like some sort of starved dog, but ultimately let them carry on uninterrupted, turning back to the main displays.

"What is Po-- Pollo Asuado?" she wondered, stumbling slightly over the unfamiliar words.

A girl ahead of her had mentioned some words Greta hadn't understood, and she wasn't sure if it was the name of a food, or an English phrase with which she wasn't familiar. But the dish handed to her looked entirely foreign. Of course that didn't mean it didn't smell delicious. And as the girl walked away to seat herself at a bench, Greta's stomach rumbled loudly. Evidently that was enough for her to finally make a choice. With that, the Norwegian turned back to the table, one hand pointing in the direction of Reena's food, deciding, "I am to have this also."

She would add to it a small selection of fruits, some roasted hasselback potatoes and creamed green peas, and then make her way along the same path as the other girl. The bench had seemed a good place to sit to enjoy her meal.

After getting ready for the first evening, Haley left the tent and went to the annual BBQ. Her fingertips were already tingling, she was looking forward to finally seeing all her friends again and spending the next month with them. She was sure that this summer would be filled with new adventures and beautiful memories. From far away she could already hear the voices from the hill hill where the BBQ was taking place.

After a few minutes, the redhead finally arrived and took a look around. There was so much choice of drinks and food, the BBQ looked fantastic and the selection was wide. Haley would hardly be able to make up her mind or go into a food coma at the end of the evening because she had eaten far too much. Summer Camp is only once, the young girl thought to herself and decided to try everything that appealed to her.

Haley paused for a moment and enjoyed the view, on one side the stadium and on the other all the many tents and students who were also on their way to climb the small hill and share in this beautiful evening. Just as Haley turned around she saw a not-so-unknown and beautiful face, it was Ronnie, Cash's friend and tent partner. "Hey Ronnie!" she called out to him and waved before walking over to him. "I hope you had a good, but short nap?" she inquired with a smile.

"You really need to tell me more about how Cash and you met. Have you guys been friends for a while? I think it's a real shame that they won't be there this year. Do you actually know why?" Haley had been really sad to hear that her good friend Cash wouldn't be attending Summer Camp and was curious if Ronnie knew more.

While she was talking to the boy, her eyes took in another person that the redhead was just really looking forward to. It was Miles and when she caught sight of him a wide smile formed on her lips. "MILES!" she shouted loud enough for him not to overhear and waved wildly at him. She turned back to Ronnie. "Sorry, there's a good friend. Will we talk again later? I'd love to!" she said goodbye to Ronnie and skipped in large steps in Miles' direction.

Not only was the joy written all over her face, it was hard to miss that Haley was happy to see Miles again. The two had once met during a legendary battle and while he was at Hogwarts, the two had become real friends and gone on adventures together. "It's so good to see you again!" she beamed at him and took him into a big hug. "How are you?" she inquired as she released the hug and looked him up and down one time to make sure everything was still on him. "I was going to join you in the tent you're in, but unfortunately it was already full." The redhead continued and shrugged her shoulders, looking a little sad. "But Ronnie here," she pointed to the boy she was standing by a moment ago, "he's been encouraging me to be part of his tent, he's a friend of a friend. What a coincidence, right?"

Once Haley finally got to a point, she looked at Miles intently. She was curious what he had to tell, what was new and how he was doing.

Bubba took in the scenery as he meandered through the campground towards the barbeque. He took it a bit slow, taking in the different tents in all their glory as he walked through, he was struck by the beauty of it all. They really had gone all-in on the festivities and it showed, he could tell her was in for a great month full of fun. The closer he got to the barbeque the more the intoxicating smells wafted towards him and if they could've carried him their life the aroma of a pie carried a cartoon character it would certainly have done so.

He picked up the pace and finally arrived at the barbeque. He saw plenty of things on the various tables but wasn't sure how fresh it was. Plus, he wanted to see the full, glorious selection. He grabbed a paper plate and some utensils, getting into line behind a fellow second-year he was pretty sure was called Reena, he knew she was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team but didn't know much more about her, and a longer-haired girl that he was practically certain was from another school because he'd never seen her before. This was confirmed when he heard the second girl ask for Pollo Asado in an accent he couldn't quite place.

When it was his turn he realized he wasn't quite what he wanted and suddenly, despite feeling like he was starving, froze up when faced with all the choices. All he could think of was 'don't say Pollo Asado don't say Pollo Asado'. "Yeah, can I get the Pollo Asado." -- son of a bitch, he'd said it. He didn't know what it was but hoped it was good. He rounded it off with a couple of spears of asparagus and some basmati rice.

He grabbed a cup of iced coffee (black) and decided since he got the same food as the two girls he might as well sit down with them so he could blame them if it was gross. He parked himself on the bench next to the girl he'd never met before, setting his iced coffee down next to him. He gave the Pollo Asado a smell, smelled good at least, the first test passed. He carefully cut a piece off of it and took a bite. It was quite good, he'd never had anything like it but he was glad he'd lucked into something that taste good. He took a sip of the iced coffee before tilting his head towards his fellow bench mates. "Howdy," he said before having a fork full of rice.

Alec. Alec Mason. The gryffindor teen with that kind smile... his mind wouldn't slip... their interactions moments ago and small yet one he couldn't shake.

The teen brushed around others, looking for his friends... a part still looking for Alec... wondering if they would get another opportunity to speak to each other.

The blonde looked for his friends. Wondering where they were. Cassie, Rosella, Drew. Where are the three... the dubbed international student squad. The teen wondered if he missed them or maybe they were arriving later... perhaps the group got distracted in each other. In their laughs and fun.... the blonde only missed them more... only wished to be in a tent with them more... shaking the thought, reminding himself of his tent. Of his friends. Of the camp. This would be a time for fun and winning.

Looking around, Charles spotted her. The red hair and emerald eyes of his little sister. Not by blood but by heart. The teen would nod toward her, walking over.

By appearance, others could see Charles as tall. Towering close to six feet at 5'11 or 180.3 cm with blonde hair runing to his ears, pushed back. Guyliner lining his eyes with a pale face, nails painted with dark red polish with the tips black. Hands shoved in the pockets of his classic leather jacket, charcoal strains and holes covered by patches featuring the Horntail Horde, Durmstrang quidditch team, and ravens. Paired with black jeans, a black shirt, and shiny black trainers.

The teen approach. His eyes cuaght two figures besides her. One (Miles), he stared at. Judging. Eyes narrowed. Not sure what to think before his eyes flickered to the second (Ronnie) and his eyes widen a tad. Eyes of reflection, chocolate fuzz hair, the structure of his bones. Charles offered a smile.

Offering Haley a towering hug as he spoke"pleasure as always, Hales," Holding her for a moment before letting go, inserting himself between Haley and the one guy (Miles) that way he could easily look at him... the one who moved his thoughts from Alec...

"how was your summer, Hales?" Charles asked his eyes darting between her and the lad... Ronnie... the teen would find himself looking at Haley as he spoke"apologies that we couldn't share a tent this time, Yefim wanted the team together for training this summer but I wish we could share," eyes darted between her and the lad... Ronnie... the teen leaned close as he offered Haley a look to say 'he's cute'.
