hows it goin', darlin? lucky heard her father ask in his melodic irish accent. he'd been in england almost twenty years and still didn't sound like either of his children. she didn't have an answer to his question. the selection of owls were beautiful -- each and every single one of them -- but lucky didn't feel a connection to either animal. she had practically sped by the toads, rats, and creepy crawlies. there's no rush, kiddo. you take your time. i remember when i chose my owl. i was younger than you and she was perfect... he would go on like that for quite a few minutes so she took the opportunity to inspect the owls again. they peered back, seemingly as interested in her as she was in them.

the last thing she wanted to do was let her father down. over the years, magic was their thing. with her older brother being a squib (and quite happy to be) -- her dad hadn't had anyone to share this part of his life with. even after lucky began to display that she had magic...he'd been in a haze of grief, mourning the loss of her mother. only in the past few years had he started to come out of it. and part of that was because she'd began to attend hogwarts. she turned to tell her dad that maybe they should try again before school resumed -- when the swish of a tail followed by a low 'meow' caught her attention.

in an instant, she caught a glimpse of a cat and left her father's side to get a closer look. lucky watched as the kitten enthusiastically chased a ball of yarn -- before immediately being distracted by another cat. she had rejected the idea of getting a cat. it was too cliche! too...predictable. she was a witch, sure, but did that mean she needed some black cat following her around? perching on her lap as she did spells and potions? cats were a no in her book! before she even entered the menagerie and offered her greetings to the polite and helpful old couple in the store...lucky decided on an owl. but as she watched the two cats play -- the much smaller one energetically chasing after the bigger one -- lucky found herself charmed.

it was an adorable gray ball of fur. with black lines stretching across its body. its eyes were a brilliant shade of light green. its tail swished in all directions, following the twists and turns of the animal, as it tried to keep up with the older -- and seemingly exasperated cat. almost as if it sensed that it had lucky hook, line, and sinker...the cat plopped down on its behind and tilted its head, purring lowly. lucky grinned, realizing that she wanted to take this cat home with her. it reminded her of herself. the smallest one in the room but desperately wanting to take on the biggest adventures.

though you din't want a cat? lucky gave a startled yet, surprised that her father had moved directly over her. she huffed at him, slapping at his hand. to his credit, her dad gave her a sheepish look before turning his attention back to the cat. i didn't but...i don't know. look how cute it is. did you see how it bounced around? owls can't do that. the cat rose up, giving lucky's father an assessing gaze before quickly bounding over and twining itself around his feet. she watched as her dad kneeled down, scratching behind the cat's ear. it looked like it belonged to them. like it was part of their family.

excuse me? ma'am? she called out to the older woman in the front of the shop. she'd heard the old man call her 'anita' but it felt strange to call older people by their first name. how much for this cat? lucky watched as the old woman strode towards them -- lucky nearly towering over her even at 5'3. there was a gentle smile gracing her features that made her seem so wonderfully kind. lucky never really had a grandmother but she imagined that if she did -- she would be a lot like this shopkeeper.

ah, she's a gorgeous girl. the older woman murmured, making lucky grin that she seemed to have a stranger's approval. she's ten galleons, love. it was a good price. her dad had been prepared to spend more for an owl. she felt that she was making the right choice. lucky leaned over, picked up her new friend, and scratched behind her ear gently. we'll take her.[/size]
