Dee let herself drop forward like a particularly ungraceful sack of potatoes, leaning against her mother's back, face buried in Alexandra's shirt. Her arms were hanging down limply. "Whatcha doing," she asked, voice muffled through the fabric.

"Just finishing up a batch of Pepperup Potion," Alexandra replied calmly. Ignoring the lump that was Dee leaned against her back, she started bottling up the potion with swift movements. "Why? Do you want to take some of that to Hogwarts with you, too?"

Dee huffed, still not moving. "No. If I'm sick I can just go to the Hospital Wing. But..." She hesitated slightly. "Could we maybe brew something else?"

Setting the last, corked vial aside, Dealla's mother reached for her wand to clean the cauldron. "What did you have in mind?"

That was a good question, honestly. Dee hadn't thought about it. The potion wasn't the point, the brewing was. "Hm," she made uncertainly, mulling it over. "Uh. Antidote to uncommon poisons?" She gave way to the side when her mother started moving, turning to face her.

"Do you expect to be poisoned?"

Alexandra's face was even as always, but Dee had spent enough time with her mother to see the small spark of amusement in her eyes. She stuck out her tongue. "I don't know. Maybe? I told you I'm on the team for the Hexwizard Tournament."

"So you did," her mother said, smiling lightly, then stepped towards the shelves, starting to put away the ingredients for her previous potions. "At least five times, if I recall. Again, you expect to be poisoned?"

"Well, last time there were dragons," Dee retorted defensively, feeling sulky. "And merpeople. And who knows what in that maze thingy." Yes, she'd been reading up on the last Triwizard Tournament. "Topped with a dash of facing one of the most evil wizards of all time. I figure it doesn't hurt to be prepared."

"My daughter, planning ahead? How unusual."

"You're making fun of me." Dee crossed her arms in front of her chest, pouting. She wasn't in the mood to be teased, although she supposed that if she was looking to charge up on familiarity and comfort before leaving for summer camp, teasing had to be a part of it.

"Wonderful observation, darling. Fetch your ingredients, will you?"

A moment's delay, then Dee sprang into action, collecting materials and equipment from different shelves, drawers and cupboards. Fire Seeds, Chizpurfle Carapaces, Billywig Stings, powdered Graphorn Horn.

Alexandra inspected the array, with Dee watching with just a twinge of nervousness, then nodded approvingly. "Good. I'll get started on powdering the Billywig Stings. Go ahead with the rest."

Brightening up, Dee moved to add the two Fire Seeds to her mortar, then grabbed the pestle to get to work. Empty into the cauldron, then pry open the Chizpurfle carapaces. She was halfway through her five counterclockwise stirs when her mother spoke up.

"So, why are you really down here brewing a potion you probably won't need?" she asked, her eyes on Dee's movements. After the fifth one, she stepped forward to add the Billywing Stings, ground into a smooth powder.

Dee changed direction, stirring twice clockwise instead, biting her lip. There was a moment of silence until she set the ladle aside. "I'm leaving tomorrow," she said.

Her mother had already taken out her wand, ready to perform the wand motion over the potion. "I know."

Another heartbeat of silence while Dee lowered the heat. "Last summer after I left, dad didn't talk to me for nine months." Her voice was growing more subdued. "What if it happens again?"

Her mother stayed quiet for a moment, carefully tucking her wand back into its pocket. "You didn't talk to him, either, Dealla. And you know why. I thought you two sorted that out."

"We did!" Dee's response was vehement, voice cutting through the room. "We did, it's just... He's barely spoken to me in the past few days. What if it happens again? If I stay in London for Christmas..." She trailed off. Guilt had her keeping her eyes on the potion, although there wouldn't be anything to do for the next forty to sixty minutes.

There was an audible sigh next to her, then a hand on her cheek, turning her head so she faced her mother. "Don't feel bad about spending time with your grandparents," she said sternly. "I understand that you want to, and your father is not angry, either. He's just absolutely terrible at communicating his feelings. As are you, by the way."

Dee gave a squawk of outrage. "I'm not-" she started to protest, but was silenced by one look from her mother.

"He's just scared," Alexandra added, letting go of her daughter's face and beginning to tidy up the workspace. "Of losing you, or of you getting hurt. But he doesn't want to hold you back, so he's trying to give you space. Badly."

Silence spread while Dealla mulled that over. She hadn't ever thought that her father might be scared. Of anything. Jonathan was fearless. And fierce. "He doesn't have to be scared of losing me," she said finally, voice quiet.

Her mother's voice was calm when she replied. "Shouldn't you tell him that instead of me?" Dee looked up to see Alexandra wave a dismissive hand at her. "Go. I'll keep an eye on your potion, and take care of the rest if you're not back." There wasn't much left to do, adding the Graphorn horn, boiling it, then taking it off the heat and stirring thrice. Alexandra would do the final wand motion, anyway.

Biting her lip, Dee nodded, then turned and ran up the stairs. She wouldn't make the same mistake she'd made last summer if she could help it.

Some time in September, 2022…

Sophia was no stranger to the Sleeping Draught. Even though it was a second year potion, she’d learned it during her first year to help with her horrible insomnia. After that, her nights were no longer filled with nightmares of screeching tires, screaming and twisted metal. They were filled with blissful sleep.

Hence, she was very appreciative of the peace the Sleeping Draught had brought to her.

This time, though, she was planning to use it for just a bit o’ mischief.

Sophia had been a good girl – a stick in the mud, even – since she was a toddler, but the prank she’d pulled on Kim last year had awakened something in her. She wanted to explore the world of mischief. Sure, her pranks were mostly tame and harmless, but she still had lots of fun.

With a practiced hand, she added 4 sprigs of Lavender and two measures of Standard Ingredient to the mortar, crushing them into a creamy paste.

”Oh, yuck,” she muttered as she added 2 blobs of Flobberworm mucus and 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to the cauldron. Disgusting. She hated Flobberworm Mucus most of all so far. Not just for the look and taste, but because of the thick, gross consistency it left the potion with.

After she was finished dry heaving, Sophia heated the mixture for 30 seconds, then added 3 measures of the creamy paste to the cauldron.

With a wave of her wand, she prepared for her least favorite part (not counting anything involving Flobberworm Mucus) of potion brewing: the waiting as the potion brewed.

She’d – as usual – planned ahead. This time, though, she wasn’t reading comics. She was writing letters to her friends that were to be involved in the mischief: Colin and Pax. The two matching letters were short and simple.

It’s almost done.

-Ginger Snaps
Hopefully her signature on the letter would throw anyone off of her trail, given her blue hair.

After 70 minutes finally passed, Sophia excitedly added 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to the mixture and heated it on high for 1 minute. After adding 4 valerian sprigs , she gave the mixture 7 smooth, practiced clockwise stirs.

This was her favorite part of potion brewing: it was methodical. Follow a recipe well, and you’d get the correct results. It was that simple.

Next came the Gillyweed. A very useful and interesting plant. If only she’d had it last summer, she could have saved herself a good bit of embarrassment at Colin’s lake.

This part of he brewing process was quite fun, actually. She enjoyed ripping bits from the head of Gillyweed. It let her – for just a moment – be someone other than Sophia Nelson.

Sophia Nelson would never allow her animalistic, destructive tendencies to take over, but now? She could act like a total mongrel and it was okay because she’d get a potion out of it.

After adding the shreds of Gillyweed to her cauldron, and settling down a bit from her little private rampage, she gave three counterclockwise stirs and waited for the mixture to come to a boil.

After thirty seconds of bubbly, boiling goodness, she finished the mixture with a wave of her wand and nodded happily at the dark purple solution.

”Oh, I hope you like this,” she muttered with an ominous grin.

Sophia didn't consider herself overly-cautious, but there were some times that she tried her best to be prepared for whatever misfortunate might await her.

For instance, she often took a Sleeping Draught at night to avoid her insomnia attacks because she knew they were coming. She often kept her wand in her left pocket because she knew that when she fell - which was often, for the clumsy girl - she tended to favor landing on her right side. And when she cooked at home, she usually covered the area in a towel to catch any messes because she knew she was liable to make one.

It wasn't being overly cautious if she knew she would make a mistake, and she was going into the Potions classroom today in anticipation of similar mistakes.

Normally, it wasn't a big deal to say the wrong thing in a conversation. Sophia'd done it many times in the past, in fact. However, she'd been alone for a long time before coming to Hogwarts, and she didn't want to risk losing all of her friends because of a stupid slip of the tongue, so she was going to use magic as a solution, like the witch she was supposed to be.

Her plan was simple:

Step 1: Brew the Forgetfulness Potion.
Step 2: If she accidentally said something stupid and drove away a friend, slip them a tiny bit of the potion.
Step 3: Don't be alone and friendless.

It was a foolproof plan, and the potion she needed was nice and simple. In fact, she'd learned about it on her first ever day of Potions class.

She added 2 drops of Lethe River water to her cauldron - making a vague note to check where the river was, geographically. It didn't matter in this context for the moment, but she was curious! - and heated it gently for 20 seconds. She carefully added 2 sprigs of valerian and gave 3 clockwise stirs.

For a moment, she couldn't help the exasperated look she gave the cauldron. Maybe it was because of the advanced potions she'd learned since, but she didn't remember brewing the Forgetfulness Potion being so easy and simple.

She waved her wand across the cauldron and sat down impatiently to wait for the potion to brew. She didn't need the potion to be any more potent than normal, so 45 minutes would suffice, but waiting was still not her strong suit.

While it was brewing, she added 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to her mortar with 4 mistletoe berries. She was careful to avoid touching the mistletoe berries. They were poisonous when ingested, but if she touched them and touched her mouth absently later, she was worried she could still be affected.

She used the pestle to grind the mixture into a medium-fine powder, setting it aside until the potion was finished brewing.

After the 45 minutes were up, she added two pinches of the powder to the cauldron and stirred five times, counterclockwise.

With a final wave of the wand, the potion was complete. Sophia smiled and admired the finished batch. Her friendships would be safe.

It was summertime now, and Starlee was back at home with her ever annoying sister. She was beginning to get more and more on her nerves and Starlee was beginning to feel like she needed to do something about it. Thinking of ideas, the ever hilarious Pompion potion came to mind. Turning her sisters head into a pumpkin would certainly be the best revenge for being so darn annoying.

One evening, Starlee made her way up to the family greenhouse, where a separate room was located where her father would brew potions. She set her potions class notes beside her, and proceeded to grab what she needed from her fathers potions storage. Two Flitterby Moths, four Bouncing Bulbs, and four Foxglove Flowers, certainly easy enough. She looked over to the cauldron, and began the heating process at the highest setting. She then began to prepare her ingredients as she waited for the cauldron to heat up. First she took the Flitterby Moths and ground them in the mortar to a pulp. Setting that aside, she then smashed the bouncing bulbs with the side of her knife, adding those into the emptied mortar, and crushed the remains. Finally, she just had to thinly slice the foxglove flowers, and her preparation was done.

Now it was time for the real potion making. The cauldron seemed hot and ready, so she started off adding the Flitterby moth pulp into the cauldron. She began to stir clockwise, watching until the potion turned green, and then she added the crushed bouncing bulbs. She then began to stir the potion counterclockwise, only stopping this time until the potion turned red. Finally, she added the Foxglove Flowers, and began to countdown from a minute as she stirred the potion clockwise. Once her internal timer was up, she took a step back, her arms now tired from all that stirring. Luckily she just had to watch it simmer as she waited for the potion to turn orange. Finally, the potion was a nice orange color, and Starlee removed the heat, and waved her wand above it, finishing the potion.

She couldn't wait to test it out on her sister.

Potion | Gregory's Unctuous Unction

Roleplay (200 words min) | WC: 997
Friends, what to do without them. They brought comfort in a harsh reality, the true ones at least. But if it was fabricated, could you call it the same way? Gregory’s Unctuous Unction, that was written on the page of her potion textbook, the perfect potion for lonely people. She had no intention to get best friends. The people that she currently had were more than enough company. It would be sad to force a friendship that will never happen in the first place. She wasn’t that pathetic, drugging someone to be her friend. Lonesome she came, lonesome she’ll always be. It was better that way. Then for what reason she decided to brew the potion, you might ask? For the dear cousin, of course. Whilst she had no ill intent, some might think the Russian boy’s reasons for using the liquid would be more atrocious than wanting a friend.

Speaking of ethics, this potion being legal itself was already non ethical. Taking someone’s freedom, making someone do something without their consent, no part in those are considered righteous. To be in the wrong hands, this would mean a disaster approaching. But there she was, sitting on the floor of an empty classroom, trying to make something that even her heart did not desire just to protect an unworthy person. The ingredients, the cauldron, everything was ready. Though, Aurora wasn't. She made a promise beforehand to lend a hand in the hexwizard tournament without having to be in the team. Even if Rodion would probably be okay with her backing out, the guilt would be a lasting fix. It would never come off in the wash like a deep stain on her white dress. Cheering for him would not help if he were, god forbid, in danger. Imagine him surrounded by monsters and Aurora doing those cheerleader stuff. If he died, he died. With potions, those sprinkles of mind control liquid can be useful. She took a deep breath, thinking of the consequences whether she decided to do it or not. “God if you’re there please forgive me for the sin I am going to do”

She was no saint, but this was harder than any other bad things she did because it contradicted her morals. But a promise is a promise, and with that, she took two springs of peppermint and three dried flower heads and grind them together using a mortar and pestle. Each grind reminded her of those people who would be victimised by the concoction, attacking her principle. She needed a distraction, not too much, but plenty enough to keep the bad thoughts at the bay. So she sang, in her very off pitch, cracked, tone deaf voice. “And I know it’s long gone and-” One measure of pearl dust into the mortar, she then combined the three ingredients together into a fine powder. “-that magic’s not here no more-” The cauldron was up and ready, the girl slowly added the powder into it as the other hand stirred the mixture clockwise. Once all was in, “-and I might be okay but I’m not-” she did one counter clockwise stir and set it on low heat. “-fine at alllllllll” One wave of a wand, and the only thing to do was wait for it to brew for eight to twelve hours according to the textbook. Maybe it would be wise to finish the song later on, but that would mean she had nothing to do whilst waiting. So she used the empty room as her own concert venue, singing another song, saving ‘all too well’ for the brewing session. Let’s hope no one would have to deal with temporary deafness from hearing such a performance.

Eight hours had passed, full of two hours non stop singing, the rest was playing with Lucifur and staring at the wall. She increased the heat to medium and of course, continued where she left off, “-and you were tossing me the car key-” did a clockwise stir and added a powder called the moonstone powder. “-fork the patriarchy!-” Swearing was never her thing, maybe she would once in a while when she was really pissed off, but most of the time, almost never. “-keychain on the ground, we were always skipping town-” Another three clockwise stirs, then she had to wait another thirty minutes. Unfortunately for her, the song needed to be paused again. The audacity of whoever wrote the book, they dare to stop a Taylor Swift’s song. The biggest sin ever committed on earth. Aurora wouldn’t do that to the maestro, so she sang the song three times since it would take her ten minutes to finish one, that way, a timer wouldn’t be needed.

Three ‘all too well’ repeats were done, it was time to add four eel eyes. “And I was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes-” She just couldn’t finish the potion without a song now. Once started, it had to be done. “-I’ll get older but you lovers stay my age-” One hand did little dances whilst the other increased the heat, then she got up and danced a bit more around the room as if she were in a music video. “-from when your brooklyn broke my skin and bones-” Just her, her imagination, and Lucifur who was confused looking at his owner’s peculiar ballet technique. “-I’m a soldier who’s returning half her weight-” The inexistent rain outside of the window, the imaginary spotlight from above, and even the dust making it an outstanding performance. Sixty seconds later, she jumped back towards the cauldron, turned the heat to low, and did two counter clockwise stirs. “Just between us, do you remember it all too well?-” A final wand wave, and it was ready. “Wind in my hair, I was there, I was there” She slowly put it into vials as her singing also faded in the background. “It was rare, I remember it.” What a dramatic Ravenclaw.

Exams were coming up, and Hunter had been given numerous requests by all sorts of students. He wasn't a hundred percent sure what potion he should or shouldn't craft for some of them. He wasn't going to brew simple potions that some students had requested in order to cheat, but he was willing to craft a new one that seemed overly useful in the right sort of context. Not only would the potion be useful for other students, but it would be extremely useful for Hunter in case he ever truly forgot something. His head was an archive full to the brink of magical theories, potion recipes, and other academic pieces of knowledge. He sometimes got curious about the interactions of charms and spells while influenced by potions. In particular, the memory potion could potentially allow a student to have an easier time casting conjuration spells due to the memory boost it gave. Hunter wanted to test this theory by all means because he had a strong interest in the two subjects of transfiguration and potion brewing.

He headed back to the owlery for seclusion in his potion brewing process again. Into his cauldron, he added 8 ounces of purified water and brought it to a boil. A jobberknoll feather was added, and then he stirred three times in the anti-clockwise direction. 30 minutes went by with the cauldron being left on high heat. Hunter already had a chopped-up stewed mandrake prepared before having entered the Owlery. The cry of a mandrake was much too risky to be brought into a location filled with students or animals, and thus he had it pre-stewed and chopped up in a more secluded location before arriving. He turned the heat down to medium, and added 5 ounces of the mandrake to the cauldron and stirred 5 times in the clockwise direction. Another 30 minutes went by with the cauldron being left alone. Next, Hunter added 3 sprigs of dried-up sage into a mortar and pestle; griding it into a powder and adding the entire amount slowly with one hand and slowly stirring with the other (clockwise).

Next up, three chopped sprigs of Galanthus Nivalis (Snowdrop) were added, and the heat was turned back up to high. He waved his wand and took out a whistle he had newly found attached to himself these days. Hunter's mind tended to wander off and think too often, and he found it difficult to count time anymore. He utilized the "Whistle to Watch" spell to turn the whistle into a mechanical watch. He used it to keep track of when an hour had gone by. Once an hour was up, he turned the heat off. 5 more stirs in the anti-clockwise direction were conducted, and he waved his wand once more to finish the potion. No mistakes, and didn't forget an ingredient or step the first time he tried it. The owls that represent knowledge were very symbolic of Hunter's liking.

(This RP is forward-dated to September 5th, 2022)
After benefitting from the usefulness of the other potion he had brewed, Flash had started to consider the fact that carrying some around that he brewed himself could be important. He would know they had not been tampered with, and they were often far more potent and reliable than a spell. He trusted his ability to brew them properly, even though his inability to sleep restfully had hampered his concentration and memory. This would partly be why the first potion he wanted for carrying around, rather than for a specific purpose, would be the Memory Potion. He did not know how badly or quickly his degredation would take hold of him, but it did not hurt to be prepared for it.

Once he had arrived back at school, he would be quick to ask for access to a place to brew with the ingredients he had bought at Diagon Alley along with all the required supplies he would need for his fourth year. As was typical with potions, he would need his clockwork watch and a good book for most of the process. Right at the start, he needed only bring the measured about of purified water to boil before adding one Jobberknoll feather and stirring counter-clockwise three times. With that, he would crack open the book for this year's Potions class to get a feeling for it while he waited half an hour. He was far from a Potions-centric studier, and had not decided yet which way he wanted to go with his OWLs next year. Technically, he did not even know if he would survive that long, but it was nice to pretend he might have a future brewing potions for a while.

Having already stewed and chopped the mature Mandrake he bought, which had taken up most of his extra spending money, he lowered the heat and added in the exact right amount, then stirring clockwise this times, and five times. Another half an hour to waste. Flash was alone at this time, most of his compatriots were busy excitedly meeting back up with their old friends, or walking around in amazement at the grand castle they all called their school. Flash would have liked to be spending time with friends, or making plans for games and events like he used to. Life was different for him now, and he had grown accostomed to it. Still, the quiet dungeon was making him feel cold and uneasy. He had never enjoyed the underground lair the Slytherin students called home, much preferring the warm sun and open sky.

He would put aside the book once the time was almost over, taking the dried sage leaves and grinding them down in his mortar. This would be the part that could easily be done incorrectly. The powder could be too fine, or too coarse. He needed to add it slowly as he made the continued stirs, then the chopped snowdrops. He would turn the heat back up, and do the first wand wave needed.

From there, it was another hour of waiting needed. This was going to be a challenge for him. The truth was, he ought to have asked one of his friends to keep him company, at least for this part. He could continue reading, but he feared he might accidentally fall asleep without realizing. He needed to stay alert, and he couldn't leave and come back. He had to stay and make sure it was safe. With that in mind, he would get out of his chair and go to the floor nearby to do a few calethenics. He wouldn't be able to keep up training for a whole hour, but it would be a good change of pace for a while.

After that, and some quiet singing of songs to himself, he was able to turn off the heat, stirring it the last few times and making the final wand movement. Finally.

A particular student's birthday was coming up and Hunter was considering getting them a present. He felt like perhaps they were a friend, but another part was doing it out of courtesy and for business related reasons. Based on their personality, Hunter only knew one potion so far that seemed fitting to give them. His cauldron was cold to the touch, and he began to add three measures of honey while eating an extra two for himself due to his sweet tooth nature. He turned on the heat to a low simmer while he ate, and to which he added 1 measure of dried nettles to the cauldron as well. Placing his rough and small hands on the wooden stirring bar he began to stir in a clockwise direction three times, taking note that the text stated gently when he first attempted this potion.

Afterward, Hunter added 12 coarsely chopped Murtlap Tentacles to the cauldron, curious to their taste but reconsidering due to the distasteful thought of potentially growing purple tufts of hairs in his ear. The cauldron was allowed to simmer for 25 minutes, and Hunter was curious about what would occur on another student's birthday. He had small parties and celebrations with his family, but never experienced another birthday for a person around his age. How do they celebrate, and what sort of things do people his age actually do on their birthdays? These were the sorts of questions swimming through Hunter's head, curious due to his own lack of experience from living secluded as an only child. During this time, he was also grinding a graphorn that was difficult to sneak away from his father's studies. 1 Measure of the grounded horn was added to the cauldron, to which Hunter stirred once in an anti-clockwise fashion. Another 10 minutes of simmering went by and he waved his wand to finish the mixture. Three bottles were filled and corked with the hot potion mixture, to be left in his satchel undisturbed for the next three weeks. Just in time for a certain someone's birthday.

Potion | Muffling Draught
Ingredients required | 4 Drops of Lethe River Water, 2 Bat Spleens, 2 Eel Eyes, 3 Leeches
Roleplay (200 words min) |
Regina wouldn't call herself a master Potioneer, but she'd always had excellent grades in both theory and practical Potions. She knew how to follow the recipes and that was - at least in her eyes - sufficient to serve her purposes. If it had been just a year prior, Regina would have been abhorred being complacent. Well, times had changed, as well as the person. And thus would begin the journey of concocting specific potions for very specific plans.

Standing in at her station in the Potions classroom, Regina began the process of brewing a Muffling Draught, something that would undoubtedly make her advantageous against rivals and enemies. She added four drops of Lethe River Water to her cauldron, followed by two impeccably diced Bat Spleens she'd prepared in advance. Regina's purple eyes were fixated on the bubbling mixture as she stirred twice in a clockwise motion. As the potion was left to simmer for ten minutes on high heat, Regina set to grind the three leeches into sticky paste in advance in her mortar for when she'd need it, all the while paying attention to the colour so nothing would be amiss. Afterwards, she carefully lowered the fire and added two eel eyes (with her features twisted in disgust at the grimy feeling) before once again stirring twice - in an anti-clockwise motion this time. Finally, three spoonfuls of the Leech paste were the last ingredient she needed to put in, and once that was done, Regina began to stir five times anti-clockwise as instructed. The heat was turned up to a medium and left to brew for about half an hour as the young witch opened her journal to jot down some important notes.

Once the time was up, she waved her prized aspen wand above the cauldron and watched with a dark satisfaction as the colour shimmered and fumes began to rise from within. She took great care as to not inhale her own potion by carelessness, of course, as she stored the Muffling Draught into glass phials and pocketed them inside her school robe.

Now to decide my victims.

Roleplay (200 words min)

Sophia considered herself a decent potioneer. She'd brewed a few fairly advanced potions in her first year, and mere days ago she'd even managed to brew a third year potion on her own. She wasn't bragging by any means, but even she - with all her low self esteem - could admit that she was rather talented at brewing potions.

Still, despite this talent, she found herself nervous as she readied her ingredients. This potion was important to her. It was her chance to impress someone she looked up to. Someone who scared her sometimes, sure, but still someone she looked up to.

She'd brewed it successfully once already, but the older student wanted to be there while she brewed a batch for her, so the last thing Sophia needed was to choke and make a mistake in front of the intimidating Gryffindor girl.

Thus, here she was, mere days after the start of the term, practicing brewing the Befuddlement Draught once more.

"2 sprigs Skurvy grass, 1 of Lovage, and 1 of Sneezewort," she recited from memory as she took the herbs and added them to the mortar, grinding them vigorously into a fine powder. She then carefully reached for the knife with her left hand and the 2 mistletoe berries with her right, placing the berries on a small cutting board.

"Flat side of the blade," she muttered to herself as she used the knife to crush the mistletoe berries before lifting the cutting board and using the knife to scrap the berries and their residue into the cauldron.

She put the knife and cutting board down, heated the cauldron to a medium heat, waited thirty seconds, added the water, and set the heat to high. Readying the ol' "stirring stick" as she liked to call it, she gave the cauldron three clockwise stirs and dropped the heat to low.

She swapped the stirring stick to her right hand and - while giving 5 slow counterclockwise stirs - slowly added the herb powder she'd grounded a few minutes ago. She waved her wand briefly over the cauldron and prepared for the wait.

Normally, Sophia would have brought comic books, or some form of game, or even normal books along for the sake of entertaining herself during long brews. This time, she decided that focus was more important than entertainment and instead watched the cauldron keenly during the 45 minute brew time, only disrupting her vigil to grind three measures of Standard Ingredient into a coarse powder.

She added the Standard Ingredient powder to the cauldron, giving it a single clockwise stir. Now came the confusing part.

With her wand in her left hand, and the stirring stick in her right, Sophia gave the mixture three slow, counter-clockwise stirs while using her left hand to wave her wand over the cauldron.

After turning off the heat and letting the mixture settle for twenty minutes, she gave one more final wave of her wand and smiled at the dark red color of the potion inside.

She'd done it. Twice.

Now all that remained was to impress a certain upperclassman.
