───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Her second year at Hogwarts had gone by in a flash.
Regina could still remember the prickly, cruel person she'd started out at the beginning of the year - coming to school with a family funeral and her father being suspected of conspiring his sister-in-law's death fresh in her mind. She'd been lonely, guarded and unwilling to make connections. However, not even a Seer could have predicted how she'd end up gaining a small circle of friends, becoming just a little bit less ruthless - and even riding the high of being a rebel and imperfect for the first time.
Oh, and discovering that she could actually experience emotions like a normal person after all. Regina had thought that was trained out of her a long time ago, but apparently even someone like Faye could kick them back into motion so easily through sheer stubbornness.
As she settled down in an empty compartment during the last train ride home of the school year, Regina tried not to think of the dreadful summer awaiting her in the gilded prison that was the Miller Manor and placed her trunk along with Athena's cage on the seat before sitting down next to the window. A small, almost inaudible sigh escaped her lips. The Gryffindor had even taken great care into switching the bold, rebellious style she'd adapted for the last two months into something more demure to face her parents at King's Cross...as she had always dressed before her new identity.
"It is going to be another torturous summer this year," Regina murmured, fingers reaching through the bars to caress the great white owl's head affectionately. "But at least I will have you to keep me company."
As the Hogwarts Express roared to life and began departing, the door suddenly slid open and orchid eyes snapped toward the new presence with recognition. (It felt almost too familiar, like what happened back during the return after Ostara, except this time it wasn't a familiar Slytherin boy at the entrance.)

───────────────────────────────────── The summer had it ups and downs.
Well, more downs than ups really. The ups helped the downs. Sort of. As Faye boarded the Hogwarts Express, her mind whizzed with all the pros and cons of returning to Derry. There was the obvious con of returning to a life where she felt that she wasn't welcome, but she had grown a lot since she was cooped up in that tiny council house. Learnt things about herself, changed things about herself, became a person that was adored and finally wanted. That was one of the best things about Hogwarts to her, the attention. She had friends, although not many, and a place in the Hogwarts community, albeit a place that deemed her as the 'weird girl'. But, anything for love, am I right?
The return to Derry made her head feel light and woozy. It made her feel physically ill. The return to a basically empty home and life where she wasn't even wanted or understood. Her childhood had been essentially empty, and now she felt like a puzzle piece that didn't fit. A puzzle piece from a different puzzle being forced into the wrong jigsaw. Oh god, what would the other kids think? Her neighbours who haven't seen her in years, watching her return home?
Those stupid kids didn't matter, though. But there was someone who did. Someone who Faye was looking for, ducking her head into every compartment in search for the ebony hair and orchid eyes.
Shoes stomped down the train carriages in a short, click-y pattern. Her steps were small and quick, multiple strides at one time, almost as if she couldn't keep up with herself. Her head whipping in every direction in an attempt to spot what she was looking for, her hair manic with the speed she was going, pushing past everyone in her way until..
She almost ran past the carriage entirely. In her state of disarray, she hadn't really processed the flash of dark hair to the right as her object of desire. Instead, she crashed right into a second year Hufflepuff. A short muffled apology and a death stare later, Faye was rushing back to the compartment and hauling it open. There she stood, ruffled hair, panting, a large trunk making her slightly keel over.
"Reg! Hey! I've been looking everywhere for you. There's, like, so many compartments? So little time. Hah!"
Faye shoved her trunk onto the seat opposite Regina, turning around so she wouldn't spot the frenzied grin and red tint on her face. Flattening her hair and taking a deep breath, she turned around, unsure where to place herself.
"So. Excited for summer?!"
Weak jazz hands accompanied the girl's question.

Regina was rather startled at the state her Ravenclaw friend was in, but ultimately made no comment as she watched her setting her belongings down on the opposite seat.
She was looking for me, and the thought shouldn't have made her heart flutter as much as it should. Regina cleared her throat gently as she folded her hands in her lap and straightened her posture.
"Well, it has been quite a year. So yes, I am looking forward to the familiar walls of my family's Manor," She replied.
It was a blatant white lie that sounded incredibly distasteful to her own ears. None of the times she'd been home during Yule and Ostara had gone well, so what good was she expecting to come from spending two long months among the people who sneered secretly at her unworthiness? The thought of having to endure her older sister's tormenting specifically made her itch for the grip on her aspen wand.
"What about you? I am sure your mother would be happy of your return. I heard Muggles with magical children can be quite fascinated with magical schools."
But she'd rather not divulge any truth of her home life to Faye. For one, the other girl was - in Regina's opinion - too whimsical and innocent to properly understand what it was like. She didn't want to taint Faye's light with any of that knowledge, and she wanted to keep her as far away from that place as possible. Especially when the ravenette knew her parents disapproved strongly of her friendship with a Muggleborn (nevermind the little crush they suspected she had.)
Faye must not know anything about her terrible home life. Surely she'd be disgusted with her family, and by that extent, with Regina herself. It was the environment that shaped the person, after all.

───────────────────────────────────── The jazz hands limped as Faye gave a deep exhale, shaking them violently at her sides. It was a way of releasing energy for her, to de-stress her. And, after she'd nearly embarrassed herself in front of her cru- Regina, she definitely felt stressed. She then moved her hands towards her hair and began to flatten it again, her fingers violently and aggressively travelling down each strand like claws, trying desperately to hide any sort of imperfection. Usually, she was fine with looking imperfect, she was far from perfect, in fact, but in this context, with this person in front of her, with the looming 'happy family' reunion, there couldn't be anything out of place.
After this, the Ravenclaw placed herself on the seat opposite, taking more care than she usually would sitting down, one leg crossed over the other. She had to physically stop herself from fixing her hair again once she sat down, the self control fighting a hard battle in her mind and reflexes. She needed to make sure that there were no imperfections. Even as a person who didn't usually have much care for such material things, she felt the anxiety of not looking good enough. Not being good enough. She leaned back on her hands.
"It's nice that you feel comfortable there. Is it big? Manors are big, yes? Like Pemberley or Netherfield? Two stories? Do you have two bathrooms? That sounds so amazing. Two bathrooms. God."
Back home, space was sparse, despite being a family of three. The thought of a big house that Regina and her family lived in seemed like a dream, a very unreachable dream, but a dream at that. She'd probably get lost and overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of a home like that, anyway.
However, she couldn't hold the almost catty scoff that erupted from her at Regina's next comment, her eyes rolling at the thought of it. It was the complete opposite of what she was expecting. It was nothing like that. Her mother would probably criticise every aspect of Hogwarts according to the education laws that she preached daily, before taking her out for good. She'd have to back to that terrible home schooling, where she sometimes wouldn't leave her room in fear that she'd be drilled in maths. And she was just getting the hang of magic!
To hide this resentful side, Faye sniffed and looked out the window, crossing her arms as her leg started to bounce anxiously. She didn't want to let Regina know anything that happened back in Derry. That was a whole other storybook that she'd never want to open.
"Yeah. I wish."

"Well, I cannot speak for all noble houses...but yes, the Miller Manor is very grand. There are four wings and we certainly have more than just two bedrooms."
But it didn't feel like a home to Regina. She'd lived in that place for thirteen years of her life, yet not once did it provide anything close to familial warmth. The only places she liked about her family manor was the library and the music room. Those were her sanctuaries away from the harsh discipline of her controlling parents. Not even her own bedroom was comforting - it was filled with terrible memories of being locked up for days on end with minimum food delivered as punishment. The Miller Manor was practically a gilded prison where her childhood had been robbed from her.
Athena had taken to observing the two witches quietly as Regina's brows furrowed at Faye's sudden switch in demeanor. She didn't think she had ever seen her friend talk with such a dismissive tone. It was a bit alarming how quick the emotions changed on Faye's face, and the raven-haired Pureblood found herself both curious and wary of what could prompt that kind of behaviour in a usually whimsical, carefree girl.
"Is that so? Forgive me for being mistaken," She said. "It sounds as though you have a bit of conflict with your mother?"
Regina wasn't the type to pry, but if Faye was having some trouble with her home life, perhaps she would be inclined to share. After all, the Gryffindor was an expert in the matter. Unfortunately.

───────────────────────────────────── A faint smile appeared on her face at Regina's mention of her family home. Faye simply couldn't believe what she was hearing. It was perfect. Not like she knew what a 'wing' was in a house, but it sounded impressive, like something out of a book. Just the idea of a house, no, a manor, made her feel light-headed with euphoria. She imagined it, a place where she could be respected and have all her wishes come true. Living in the lap of luxury. There could be a personal library, imagine all the books she could have! A whole room of Jane Austen. A house could finally feel like a home. How could there be a single person who wouldn't want that?
Her parents wouldn't like that, though. They wouldn't be invited. This was her dream, her fantasy. Perhaps Regina would join her? She allowed herself another second of whimsical thought before her mind snapped back to reality. She had to stop doing this. It wasn't normal. Her eyes darted across through the glass, taking in all the scenery she could to stop herself from doing anything more... awkward.
Faye heard the words quite clearly, but didn't act on them. Instead, she chose to uncross her legs and slide closer to the window, hooking one leg over the other. She placed her elbow onto the windowsill, her head resting on her open palm as she gazed out of the window longingly, trying to make it seem like she wasn't just avoiding a particularly touchy topic.
"I mean.. Everyone has, right..?" She struggled with the words, wrestling for the right way to voice her opinions. "It's just.. it's almost like she just.. doesn't get me." Faye moved her arm off the window in order to emphasise her words better "She doesn't want to. And that's worse. But, it doesn't matter. I don't need her. Or Pa. They don't matter, they-"
The Ravenclaw inhales sharply, cutting herself off before she began ranting. God, what was she doing? Cover it up, cover it up-
"Enough about me! How.. how are you doing?" She stutters messily, eager to get back on track.

Orchid eyes were attentive, following Faye's movements as the girl seemed to enter a contemplative, out of reality state as she gazed out the window to the vast Scottish green fields. Regina's brows furrowed as she listened to the words, spoken in such a quiet, aggrieved tone that reminded her uncomfortably of her own resentment towards her parents. The raven-haired witch pursed her lips even as Faye spluttered and changed the subject, unhappy about her friend going through the same chagrin. But perhaps that was what had drawn them together in the first place, despite their initial off-putting first meeting.
They were merely victims - children - trapped within identical cages of the unloving adults. How melodramatic.
Regina's wand slipped from her sleeve as she waved it towards the compartment entrance, a small "Colloportus" effectively locking the closed door from anybody attempting to enter a rather sensitive, private conversation. [d20 : 8] + 8 = 16 --> success
"I understand you," She whispered, almost shakily. Her eyes glanced at Faye then, sincerity and empathy shining through. "Even if nobody does."
Because I know exactly how it feels, was left unsaid yet hung heavily in the air between them. How had it come to this? Regina had been elated in Faye's company, but talks of their families had dampened the mood horribly. Still, it was nice to know she wasn't the only one. And it was even better to know the target of her affections shared the same struggles. They had a bond like no other.
Athena, bless the owl's heart, hooted firmly in reaction to the emotional weight hovering on the two girls' heads. Regina's lips twitched just barely as she reached into her pocket to fetch a treat and fed it to her precious pet with a loving hand.
"I have an idea of what we could do to distract ourselves from the horrors of family summer, if you'd like to hear it," The Lion addressed her friend, eyes almost twinkling with mirth as she shot Faye a meaningful glance.

───────────────────────────────────── Slim fingers reached up to the Ravenclaw's face, moving a misplaced strand of ginger hair behind her ear, back into its place. The cheap hair dye made the hair feel rough on her fingers, a change in texture that would normally have been unwelcome if it didn't provide an escape from the very real situation happening in front of her. Her eyes moved silently to the door when she heard it lock. How did Regina work her spells so easily?
Faye's eyes lingered on the door for a second, debating what would happen if she ran out of it and into another compartment. To just run, run far away from her feelings. She shook her head, hoping that it would shake her unwanted thoughts out of it.
She couldn't do that.
No, how could she ever? She turned her head back towards Regina.
Hazel eyes met orchid, a sight so familiar yet, in this moment, was completely alien. A vast realm of untouched colour and beauty. Every movement was slowed to a halt, every limb freezing, her eyes labouring to move themselves down her face and back up. Every word sounded like a symphony to her ears. She couldn't do anything in the moment except bask in the glory of the sight in front of her.
Was she romanticising this simple moment? Probably. Or maybe Faye had been waiting to hear Regina say this (Hell, hear anybody say it) for months. It solidified her want. She didn't even stop to think why she'd been the first one to understand, why she knew. She couldn't think about anything else.
The Ravenclaw looked away, repositioning herself on the seat. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't bring herself to look back towards the girl, her mind whirling with static euphoria.
"Thank you." It was barely a breath, almost lost underneath the sound of Athena's cry. She still had so much to say, but, even with her lack of 'emotional understanding', she sensed that it was the wrong time to let such things fly. Even then, she didn't know how long she could keep it bottled up before it exploded on her. Exploded on everything around her, like those makeshift volcanos her father made with her on the one day he wasn't working.
But, Regina would understand, right? She'd understand everything what she'd had to do to keep up with everyone else. She said that she understood her now, surely she'd understand her later.
Faye snapped back to the present, a mischievous smile dancing onto her face at the sound of her companion's words.
"What exactly do you have in mind, Reg?"

"Nothing too drastic," She replied, the corner of her lips curving just slightly. It was the most of a smile anyone had ever been able to draw out of the usually jaded, stoic Regina. "If you tell me where you live, I may be able to have Athena deliver some letters to you."
This moment, right here, was incredibly special. It was intimate, more than the one they shared in front of the bonfire during the Midspring Festival. It was no longer Faye disapproving Regina's motives for recognition - they had reconciled past that little riff. No, she would forever remember this moment to be when they'd reached an understanding nobody else could. At least to them. The way Faye's beautiful hazel eyes lightened whenever she looked at Regina, as though she was her whole world, while the sunlight shone through the window pane and gave the Ravenclaw's ginger hair such vibrance. It felt like a scene straight from a fairytale.
Regina was forced to mature much too early, so she never believed in whimsical tales. But this right here, she'd like to believe it came close. And she wanted to cherish that - how Faye was the only one who gave her the recognition she'd always hoped her own parents would give her. How she'd sought for people who wouldn't turn away because she was a bit cruel out of insecurities and emotional hurt, and only Faye had met those expectations. And now Regina was desperate to keep whatever it was they had between them afloat, even though she'd never say the words out loud herself.
"We could exchange some letters, the way we did back in February," The raven-haired Gryffindor said. "Throughout the summer. It shall bring us both the comfort we need in a house that is not quite a home. Let's make it a promise."

───────────────────────────────────── Faye watched the Gryffindor with rapt attention, listening to every single word. Regina's plan seemed foolproof. Was it really that easy? To have Athena fly back and forth like a messenger? She wondered for a split second how the owl would make the flight from Regina to Ireland and back, but that wasn't really what she was focusing on. The messages could be sent by anybody for all she cared. All she cared was that the letters were getting to her. She'd deal with how her parents would react after.
She wished she could stay forever in the moment, spend the rest of her time in this little compartment. Sit eternally with the girl of orchid eyes. The girl who understood her. Understood what she had to do. It was a lasting, no, everlasting partnership. They were one of the same mind, both broken and misunderstood. It wasn't what she'd planned, she had to admit, but as she sat now, losing herself in purple irises, it felt perfect.
"Oh. Really?" She winced internally at having to put on the higher voice. Playing a façade seemed easy until you realised you're always living a double life, bringing its own set of exhaustion to the mix. However, she'd always prided herself in being able to separate the two personalities in her mind. That place was a whole other world. A dystopian, mendacious world.
"That'd be lovely. The only way to stay in touch, right?" Faye breathed through her nose, almost like a laugh. She hoped that it wasn't obvious that she was barely holding it together.
She reached her hand out at Regina, palm flat to the air, a small smile on her face. (it masked her internal screaming and pulling hair) Her eyes were sparkling with unseen power.
"Promise?"
