George always had an ear to the ground for the school's gossip. It was the most reliable source of information beyond the school newspaper when it came to airing out embarrassing secrets or finding out who was who in the overcrowded school. A new name had been in the mouths of the student body this month - @Regina Miller. He had already heard of the Millers - there was a little gaggle of them attending, one of which was quite handsome, although apparently 'betrothed'. He didn't know people got betrothed these days, but there you go.

The littlest Miller of the bunch had apparently been tormenting Emma Wynn, the littlest prefect in all of Hufflepuff. Clearly, the girl had some problem. And people with problems like that were great, because once you got them shouting, they'd basically tell you their entire life story. Spotting Regina in the hallway, George pursued, diverting from his route to his next class in favor of shadowing her until an opportune moment presented itself to harass her strike up conversation.

"Wow, is that Regina Miller?" asked George, letting his jaw hang slack to give off the impression of an awestruck admirer. He adjusted the strap of his bag on his shoulder, reaching down into it to pull out a small notepad. He pulled his face together into an exaggerated smile. "I'm a big fan of your work. You know, what you did with Emma?"

He flipped the notepad over to the next page and brought out his quill, dabbing it in ink and scratching along the top of the paper to test if it was flowing correctly. "Oh, I'd love to get your autograph. I wanted to ask what was next for you? I mean, after you've beat up a first year, it's hard to know what's next. Maybe you could go to St. Mungo's and practice your dueling spells on some of the newborns?"

He snickered. There was one word that had come up frequently in his research into the Millers, and it was honour. What did she know about honour? Emma was a Hufflepuff. Her honour was probably what got her into trouble - expecting too much of it from her fellow students. He really laid the sarcasm on thick as he spoke again, "I'd expect nothing less from the latest and greatest of such an honourable family.

One would be foolish to not expect repercussions from pulling an incredibly unmannerly, contemptuous stunt against an authority figure at school. Even if that authority figure was a meek, stuttering little 11-year-old Hufflepuff who couldn't even stand up for herself.

Regardless, the damage was done, and the comeback was powerful. Regina knew her name was on every single person's lips for days now, in a harmfully negative way - the second-year Gryffindor who, with her first-year Slytherin companion, had thrown spells at a Prefect and walked out of detention unscathed. Whispers of a model Pureblood Heiress who'd turned into a rebel. Students who scurried away immediately as she appeared in the halls when they talked behind her back. It was also only a matter of time before the events of her glorified babysitter Gryffindor Prefect Decipio hunting her down would be the new subject of rumours among drama addicts.

Regina could not find it in herself to care less about her new bad reputation. If anything, she embraced it willingly - if it hurt her family name more than herself, then it was all the more reason for the raven-haired Lioness to give them something to gossip about. After getting the first taste of freedom, of not having to be utterly perfect for once, it had naturally gotten to her head. Regina even began dressing differently - gone was the regal, expensive robes Mother always insisted upon her. Replaced with short skirts, thigh-highs and boots. Her posture was no longer forcefully poised - she walked with a terrifying confidence, but no less elegance. She found an immense satisfaction in the way others parted their way warily or scooted aside in fear when she passed by the corridors. It made her feel powerful. Noticed. Recognised.

However, sometimes, it wasn't necessarily a good thing. Case in point - the stranger who was literally all up in her face as Regina was heading to her next class after following her all the way from the first floor where she'd finished her Dark Arts Defense lesson. Once glance at his uniform was enough to bring a grimace to the usually apathetic witch's face.

Another Hufflepuff, she lamented inside her head. It seemed as though she had quite a nasty curse with the Badgers since the beginning of this year. She'd already made two enemies out of them, and by the looks of it, one more was going to be added to her list.

"Is everyone always more concerned with other people's businesses other than their own?" She drawled, almost bored. Regina already knew what this person was up to the moment he approached her with that awful exaggerated attitude - being the daughter of a Ministry politician would certainly give you the experience of spotting nosy journalists hungry for the scoop of the month.

She was fully prepared to push him aside and shrug off his backhanded comment...until he mentioned her family.

A switch was flipped inside Regina's mind instantly, boysenberry eyes becoming poisonous as she whipped around with her aspen wand sliding into her palm from where it was tucked under her sleeve and pointing it at the offending Hufflepuff's throat. Touchy subject, that was. This was why she despised intrusive individuals as much as authority figures who sought to control her the way her parents always did.

"Do not," She hissed, looking more Snake than Lion at the moment. The other students who had been passing by next to them had either gasped, removed themselves from the scene or was watching with morbid curiosity at a potential duel break-out. "Speak of things your dimwitted mind cannot comprehend, you simpleton."

"If everyone minded their own business, there wouldn't be much business at all," George said, lamenting it like an unfortunate fact of life. Which, in his life, it was. In this instance it was even more his business than usual. A slight against one Hufflepuff was a slight against them all - especially if it was one so innocent as Emma. If it had been Aaron or something, George could have turned the other cheek, but the pureblood's heinous acts were inexcusable.

The young man's eyebrows rose in surprise when the girl's wand found his throat, and despite her outwardly threatening appearance, he could not help but laugh at how suddenly she had escalated the situation. "Oh - what are you going to do, cut my throat? Strike me down where I stand for this... slight to your honnooooourrrrr?" He spoke with a Shakespearean affect, keeping his chin lifted so the girl could cast whatever it was she intended to his throat. What was she going to do - start throwing unforgivables up and down the corridors? The worst he'd get was a bit of bruising or annoyance. He nodded sideways, directing her attention with his eyes to the other students who were witnessing. "Please - Regina, people are looking. And I cannot be bothered with detention today, I have homework."

He waited for her to consider his offer of standing down before continuing on talking in either case. "My dimwitted mind's good for a lot more than most people give it credit for, so..." He smiled as he spoke, eyes wandering around the corridor before settling on her again. "I've got a feeling it could root out the complexities of why one of the lion cubs are picking on badgers. It's a fairly common occurrence. They just usually do it to ones their own size. Or bigger!"

Regina felt a nerve under her right eye twitch when the offending Hufflepuff purposely dragged out that insufferable word. It wasn't the fact that she'd dishonoured her family name was what had provoked the flip in her attitude, it was how this complete stranger thought he could so casually assume her motives was had set her off. He didn't know her. He couldn't possibly be in it for anything more than a chance to dig up some unflattering secrets. Or getting her into more trouble for the sake of defending his fellow Badger.

Either way, Regina didn't have the time to humour this imbecile any longer. She had much more important things to do - him and his little taunts were insignificant.

"Very daring of you to not expect a potential fight when you have deliberately irritated somebody who you know clearly have no qualms with hexing you," It was only thanks to the many years experience of keeping her emotions at bay that the Lioness was able to banish the initial dark anger as she lowered her wand and took a step back. "As I said, you know nothing of what you speak, so do not make conclusions on your own."

Regina turned on her heels, sending a withering glare to anybody who was still staring unabashedly until they scurried away. If they were looking for entertainment, she wouldn't be giving it to them - she'd much prefer not having to deal with her babysitter again, thank you very much.

"I live a very bold life in regards to irritating hex-happy twelve-year-olds," George said, all smug with the invincibility of youth protecting him. The wand moving away from his neck, he brushed off his collar, standing up straight and giving her a respectful bow of the head at the kind gesture of not hexing his head off like a jack-in-the-box. At her second comment, he looked quite perplexed, furrowing his eyebrows and scrunching up his nose.

"Oh, but if I don't make them on my own, can you make them for me? But wait - I'm supposed to mind my own business, but not make conclusions on my own. I've got my work cut out for me now..." he said with a sigh, jotting down a few notes with his quill. No independent thought, no referring to others. If journalism worked the way purebloods would have it, the Prophet would publish a blank page with Quidditch scores on the back every month. "What conclusion am I meant to draw from all this?"

Poor George heaved his shoulders and sighed dramatically. Oh, without the wisdom and guidance of such high and mighty witches, how could he ever hope to understand? Even more pressing, how could he afford to care? He watched her walk away and jotted down a few more notes in his notepad, more intently this time - actual notes on Regina. "Hates honour... hates Hufflepuff... hates George."

Regina had only taken a few steps ahead when her walk faltered slightly and her expression became contemplative. In truth, she could have cared less of what people think about her or her goals - and that included nosy little journalist prats who were only running to become the next gossip headliner of the school. Even if she did despised her father, his teachings as a Ministry politician on how to deal with those kind of reporters weren't completely worthless as his ability to be a loving patriarch.

She shouldn't be doing this, but that was also the same mindset she had before all the rule-breaking began. And look at where she was now - riding the high of being imperfect and free from the invisible constraints. With that thought in mind, Regina took a deep breath and turned only slightly to glance at the Hufflepuff over her shoulder.

Revealing any hint that could lead to a potential nasty scandal was a taboo in the Pureblood community, but at this point, she was just about ready to do anything to spite the people who had controlled her all her life.

"I shall only tell you this, Mr. Reporter," Regina said. "It is not what you look. It is what you see."

If he wasn't truly a dimwit as he'd claimed, then she knew he would be smart enough to figure it out.

"And for your information, I am thirteen. Making statements without a thorough fact-check is incredibly harmful and distrustful in journalism."

And with that, Regina left the corridors without another look back.
