Nia was running late. Usually, she'd be one of the first people in the class, her high levels of energy even early in the mornings carrying her through the corridors in a breeze. However, last night she had stayed late writing letters for her sister, and this morning she had overslept for the first time since her arrival at Hogwarts.

Now, she could have probably made it in time for class if she hadn't spent a good fifteen minutes staring in the mirror fixing her bed hair, but come on. What was she, an animal?

And so, she now found herself hurrying through the stone corridors that lead to her classroom, backpack bouncing off her back with every step and robes following her movements gracefully. She reached the door of the classroom, which was half open, and took a peek inside.

The professor didn't seem to be there yet, she exhaled with relief. The classroom was filled with students already, some of them sitting dutifully in their seats, while others walked around, sat on tables or drew on the huge blackboard, all of them waiting for a teacher to appear. Or, if they were lucky, not to appear.

Nia straightened her robes before stepping into the classroom with a pleasant smile on her face. She moved through the neat rows of seats, nodding in greeting to those students she knew as she passed them in her way to her seat.

However, when she reached it, she saw that a blonde girl with plaited hair was occupying it, watching the other students from it as she sat comfortably in silence. Her blue-grey eyes seemed bored, and Nia could tell that she was tall even as she sat, maybe even as tall as herself.

So, here's the thing. Nia new that technically there were no assigned seats in the classroom, but usually everyone picked the same seat every day and respected each other's claimed seats. When Nia had entered the classroom for the first time on the first day of school, she had carefully scanned the room for the best seat in it, and claimed it as hers. It was almost at the end of the second line, close enough to the window that you had a clear view of the Great Lake, but not that close that it would be too cold. A huge stone semicolumn emerged from the wall, somewhat obstructing the view that the professor would have of her and giving her some space to slack off every now and again. It was just the seat.

That's why, even though the seat right next to the blonde girl was unoccupied and perfectly available, Nia couldn't just let it go. Surely, the girl would understand — she had been sitting somewhere else entirely throughout the whole year, so she could just go back there, wherever it was, or sit on the adjacent seat, no problems.

She approached the girl, whose eyes hadn't left the blackboard in which a couple of students were now playing Hangman, and tapped her softly on the shoulder with her nicest smile. When the girl turned her head to look at her, she said with a sweet voice:

"Sorry dear, but would you mind changing seats? This is where I've been sitting all year."

This was not June Selwyn's day. She had broken two hair elastics this morning, and had to resort to tying her left plait with some leftover twine she had to scrounge around her trunk for. She had spilled jam right on on the chest of her robe at breakfast that morning (she was able to get most of it off in the washroom, but it was still a sticky mess), and had quite possibly stained her shirt underneath. Someone had sat in her seat in class. Even though seats weren't assigned, some Gryffindor thought it would be funny to switch things up a bit before the end of the school year, refusing to give June her seat back (not that June asked, she more... lingered around the seat for a moment hoping he'd notice. June didn't think she had the mental fortitude to ask him to move after the morning she had), and so she'd had to move to one that was... fine. And, to top it all off, tomorrow was the beginning of it. Her namesake. The month of June, the "inspiration" for her incredibly un-inspired name. The worst month.

To put it simply, June was in a mood. A bad mood. A very bad mood.

And so, of course, someone had to come and poke the bear. Because that is just the kind of day June Selwyn was having.

June looked at the girl, a Hufflepuff, with a stare that looked like all human decency had left her (it mostly had). Dear? Dear!? How dare she. How dare she. Not even bothering to learn her surname, her first name, anything about her. Just a plain-old pet name from someone she didn't know.

All at once, the frustration and anger that June had been holding back all day came tumbling to the front of her mind. It took everything June had to hold herself back from spitting verbal venom at this first-year.

Forcing a (passive-agressive and possibly quite fake-looking) smile on her face, June took a deep breath. "I'm so sorry, dear," she said through slightly gritted teeth, "but I'm quite comfortable right here. Besides, the professor will be here any minute, and I don't want to be out of my seat when they arrive. Perhaps if you'd been on time, you'd be able to keep 'your' seat. Maybe try that next time, hmm?"

June winced at herself internally. It would have been so easy to just shift one seat over for the girl, she seemed quite nice. But it felt... it felt a little good to let out everything that had accumulated in the day. It felt powerful. And if June couldn't have her seat, no one could.
