What Do Your Wizard Eyes See?
@Ivy Bellamy
Somehow he’d thought divination would be a bit more…exciting.
Well, not every day could be exciting, it made sense that most days would be mundane, but this was just- maybe he just wasn't very gifted at this. Probably not patient enough or something. He wouldn't be surprised.
Ugh, no! Focus! He was supposed to be focusing! Just drink the stupid tea and get the motions over with; he took a gulp and fought back the immediate disgust with a wince, choking back the cough lodged in his throat he glared at the cup. It was positively tepid. Disgusting. That’s what he got for zoning out.
Every sip felt like sickly sweet medicine down his throat, and hanging on the back of his tongue; no ignore it. Focus, focus, focus. He went through the motions, feeling like a robot on auto drive while following the by now practiced motions of the lesson in a mimic of his assigned partner. Spin the cup, flip the cup, back upright, and finally handle to the heart. He sighed quietly, under his breath less the professor hear him, and stared into the cup with low spirits. Plenty of clusters and shapes but it all just looked like a jumble of leaves to him, nothing like the symbols supposedly filled with grand insight into the future the lesson book claimed.
That part kinda looked like waves? Was there even a symbol for waves? He flipped through the pages of his book so cleverly titled, ‘Unfogging the Future’, hoping perhaps with such a name would indeed provide answers to the Gryffindor. No luck. One page turned to five, the rustling of paper becoming another buzz of white noise in the background as he searched; no waves. He peered again, turning his head this way and that, well… that kinda looked like a ship, right? A sinking one to be precise; he was pretty sure there was no symbol for that in the book. He still checked. Sadly he was right, no sinking ships. Bummer.
There was a normal ship symbol though! Less of a bummer.
Symbolic of escape apparently. Maybe a sign of escape from this lesson- one could hope.
He jotted it down lest he forget, stifling a laugh at the absurdity. Was better than nothing, even if the boy was practically positive any of the symbolism was lost on him, at least he’d have something to show if the professor thought he was slacking on purpose. Which he wasn't. Elsi was just…apparently really untalented at this.
Putting the cup back down soon he and his partner ended up trading. Hopefully the girl, Ivy? He thinks that's what her name was, hopefully she had a better time of it with his cup than he had. Maybe he’d even have better luck with her cup? Unlikely, but one could hope. Halfheartedly, he picked up the new cup. Eyeing it, trying to not look totally dead inside, he stared sightlessly, looking but not really seeing. Jeez, why was he so bad at this? Wait-
He sighed, re-adjusting the cup. He’d been holding it wrong, stupid-! Couldn’t even hold the cup right- He blinked, ignoring the urge to rub at his eyes in disbelief. He actually saw something! Kinda? Maybe? Look he was bad at this okay!
But that right there? That looked like a table, a table that…looked like a fox's head and tail were peeking out from behind. Weird, but those were actually symbolic for something! He remembered seeing those in the book; looking down at his books page he was proven correct. Tables were symbolic of bonding and social gatherings while a fox was…oh.
“Oh wow,” he muttered. Jealousy and scheming friends. That was heavy stuff.
“You don't really get along with people easily do you?” he blurted out, eyes still on the tea cup. He immediately regretted it.
Like wow, he could not have worded that any worse could he?

What Do Your Wizard Eyes See?
@elsian coxIn Ivy's opinion, Divination was absolute rubbish.
She couldn't seem to make head or tail of it at all. It wasn't like History of Magic or Muggle Studies, where simply listening to the professor and revising the textbooks provided would help one flourish - nor was it like spellwork in Charms or Transfiguration, which seemed to come relatively naturally to her. In Divination, you either got it or you didn't. It was clear that Ivy most certainly did not get it all.
She'd given up at this point, to be honest. Ivy didn't really pay much attention anymore - she was doing well enough to pass, but that was about it. In hindsight, it was really her own fault she was in this class - when she'd transferred here in January, she'd picked electives at random under the assumption that she would be able to convince her parents to let her return in no time. Now she was stuck here, doing goddamned Divination. Ivy had tried to understand it, she really had, but to no avail.
Ivy half-listened to the professor with her chin propped up in her hand and a vaguely disinterested expression on her face, the blank look in her eyes a clear signal that she was lost in her thoughts. Reluctantly, she drew herself upright as the boy across the table picked up her teacup, looking equally as bored. If her memory was working correctly, he was also a Gryffindor, and his name was Elliot or Eldrin or something among those lines. He was taking a while to examine the tea leaves, but Ivy wasn't one to judge when it came to Diviniation. Still, with a soft sigh of impatience, she leaned back into her seat and stared off into space.
His words caught her attention, snapping her out of her daydream, and immediately she stiffened with indigination, eyes narrowing with dislike. "I beg your pardon?" Offended, she reached across the table and grabbed the teacup from his hands to see for herself, although she couldn't make any sense of the tea leaves. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Oh, she definitely hadn't liked that. Powerless he watched her take the cup.
“Well,” he began, hesitantly pointing at the cup, “table are symbolic for uh..” He paused, peering down at the book before speaking, “bonding, being social apparently.” She seemed a tad bit like the social type, maybe not overly so but at least a bit from the few times he’d seen her passing, so maybe the cup wasn't totally a fluke?
“And,” he tacked on, slouching forward to rest chin in hand as he pointed out the fox in the cup, “you got a fox peeking out behind the table so-”
He shrugged in lull of a final response. There was no nice way to say it. No sugar coating one could do without outright changing the symbol. Lying basically. Elsian wasn't quite sure he wanted to explain further anyway, if looks could kill…It didn't matter, either way foxes were bad news.
“I don't know what to tell you, foxes are just bad news.” he looked at his own cup, pushed to the side and all but left to rot with its leftover leaves. This girls cup had been the clearest read he’d ever been able to get so excuse him for getting a little ahead of himself, could you really blame the boy for being a bit excited at the idea? It was kinda funny though, the first good reading he’d gotten and the reading itself was absolutely horrible. “Scheming friends and all that jazz.”
Well actually, it did also mean jealousy so maybe it wasn't friends that were the danger. Maybe it was her.
“Unless the fox stands for your jealousy,” he blurted out, suddenly fascinated at the 2 widely different paths to take. Then again what did he really know? It was her cup, only she could know for sure.
“It is your cup though,” he looked away, flipping a page idly, “what do I know?”
But between jealousy and scheming friends… “Neither point to being good with people though do they?” he muttered to himself, jotting down the symbols he’d seen in her cup down quickly so he could call it a day with his notes.
Ah… oh no. No no no, that sounded really bad. Well, it was bad but oh-
Maybe he could take it back.

@elsian cox"I don't know what to tell you, foxes are just bad news. Scheming friends and all that jazz."
Ivy frowned intently at her teacup as she listened, trying to see the fox that he was describing. To be honest, she couldn't really see anything past the mess of black mush at the bottom of her cup; there were no shapes that stood out to her or anything. Huh, maybe she was just really bad at Divination. "I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about," she said crossly, setting her cup down with a clatter. "You're just messing with me, aren't you?" What scheming friends? All her friends were fabulous, thank you very much.
"...Unless the fox stands for your jealousy."
Ivy's cheeks turned pink and she looked back down at her cup. Maybe the boy was onto something here - she recalled the Midspring Festival, all those times when she'd frozen up with pangs of jealousy for Marshal and Evelynn.
No, absolutely not, she told herself sternly. There was no way that her damned tea leaves had picked that up. Ivy rolled her eyes, and with a refined shake of her head, she sat upright in her seat and glared at him again. "Now you're just being insulting," she sniffed disdainfully. "Who even are you?" Without waiting for his response, Ivy picked up his cup and stared into it determinedly. "Yours is a mess. I can't see anything."

Oh ho-
She was getting defensive!
He couldn’t think why she would be, not if she was as confident about the whole reading being wrong as she seemed to be acting. Innocent people didn’t get so defensive. Maybe, just maybe, he’d actually got a reading right and the girl was just in denial.
“I’m not messing with you.” He said, huffing at the clatter she was making. If she made a scene and the teacher got upset with them, he was not taking the fall for it.
“I am not!” He defended, temper flaring for one bitter second, “it’s right there! It’s not my fault if you can’t read your own stupid cup.” Seriously, little miss refined was quickly getting on his nerves. He hadn’t even done anything but actually tried to do the assignment and she was already glaring and getting all huffy about it!
The boy glared petulantly at the other, biting his tongue to stop the retort on his tongue when she raced ahead without so much as a sliver of care for his reply. Prissy brat. What made her think she would be able to read his cup when she couldn’t even read her own? “I thought we established you just suck at divination,” he offered sweetly, tugging her cup closer to peer inside it boredly. “Or maybe,” he slowly looked up from the tea cup, eyeing the cup in her hands where she stared determinedly, “the reason you can’t see anything is because you’re so stuck in denial you don’t want to see what's right in front of you.”
Wouldn’t know a sign if it bit her on the nose.
