2022, Stage 3 Ravenclaw vs Slytherin: Match 1

Okay, a house elf jumping to bring her tea had actually not been her intention - it had been a proclamation for effect, not result - but who was she to turn it down when the elf had gone through all the trouble?

After accepting the tray with thanks and a smile, Dee placed it down on the stage, crouching down in front of it. With expert motions she added the tea to the water and gave it a moment to steep. She was usually an ardent advocate of green tea, but if that was not an option, she preferred her tea light, not letting it steep for too long.

"One cup coming up! Milk? Sugar?" she called over to Alan, then looked at her partner. "You want a sip, too, Phae?" Then, finally, a little bemused, she glanced up at Piper, who was now clearly visible, the smoke dissipated. "I imagine it would be a little awkward to drink up there, but do you want a cup? We can probably hand it to you... somehow."

A house elf came running with a tray of tea. Why it even bothered entertaining what was clearly a silly game by teenagers was beyond Phaedra, but that was noted as a mystery for later. Tea did sound rather lovely—nonstop banter could leave even the wittiest parched for refreshments. When satisfied with her charm's consistency, her wand stalled upright with little regard for what was on the other end. Tiger circled her feet and she would turn to her team's captain to say, “Don't mind if I do.”

Alan grinned over at Dee, "Yes please!". The duel however had moved on and in response Tiger quickly rushed off the piste, to safety in Alan's arms. Phaedra stopped her spell to cast another, causing Piper to hit the ground uncomfortably. However Phaedra also managed to cast a spell that would fill both herself and Dee with confidence. Not that Dee seemed like the kind of person who needed a morale boost, she would grow even more boisterous! But the younger Ravenclaw decided to cheer herself up on top of it, to Alan it seemed like they were getting ready to celebrate.

After handing everyone who had requested one a cup of tea, Dee sipped hers, squatting down to scratch Tiger's head. This was very likely the oddest duel she'd ever been in, but that didn't mean she didn't know how to enjoy the situation now that it was here.

Sadly, the good times couldn't last. Piper seemed to have grown bored of banter - maybe she had just started napping up there? Coaxed into sleep by the gentle swaying of Phaedra's wand? - and Dee was getting bored quickly. And if she was feeling that way, how must their audience be feeling?

Cup empty, Dee set it back onto the tray, then straightened up, dusting off her robes. "I think we've had enough of a break, don't you?" she inquired from Phaedra, her hand slipping into her pocket to retrieve her wand. "How about a little magical boost and we wrap this up? We can watch the rest of the other duels."

Not waiting for a reply, Dee pointed her wand at herself, trying out a charm she had so far only used in class. Immediately, she could feel her lips drawing upward, the irresistible urge to just grin stupidly. There was elation swelling and glowing in her chest, and she had the urge to full on burst out laughing. Wasn't this the most perfect day? Honestly, she doubted they could have lost today if they had tried to. She only noticed a moment later that this was likely Phaedra's confidence boosting charm that had strengthened the effect of her own cheering one. She felt like she could conquer the world right now, without breaking a sweat. Fears? Couldn't think of any that she would be scared to face right now. Huh.

Had she been smug before, Dee was now bursting at the seams with confidence. "I'll bet ten chocolate frog that we can end the duel in the next twenty seconds," she said, a statement, not a question, directed at Phaedra as much as the audience. There was an obnoxiously bright smile on her face when she raised her wand to point it at Piper, now back on solid ground.

“Hm,” she answered to Dealla's question of ending their break. She had a point; the duel had to officially end sometime. Not to mention, there was no reason tiring out her arm if the witch on the other end didn't even complain enough to make it worthwhile. Tea cup still in hand, Phaedra would pull her lips from the rim and watch as Piper rose from her fall. Like a cat, Phaedra quickly grew bored of playing.

A magical boost? Quick thinking like that was precisely why Prince was Captain. “Excellent idea.” With a refined wave overhead, she and Dealla were both filled with confidence. It too was a charm Phaedra rarely utilised, but with the way it made her feel perhaps there was good reason for that to change. Genuinely grinning unlike her usual smirk, Phaedra remarked, “Twenty seconds? Talk about a cake walk.”

When Piper stopped doing anything entirely and just let whatever was going on happen, happen, the fifth year frowned with confusion. This was just entirely odd to watch for him. After all this was not how a duel was supposed to go and the fact that despite not reacting, the duel was still going on felt wrong. After all, at this point she was getting attacked without even trying to defend herself. ”Stop the duel”, he finally decided, though it felt a little odd, but he would have to go with this. ”The duel has been concluded, Ravenclaw wins!” He gave a crooked smile to Dee and Phaedra, wondering if they would be upset by this turn of events. Dee probably not, because she would ona logical level know why he had to call off this duel, but perhaps her competitive side would mind? “Congratulations,” he offered awkwardly and told all three still standing duellists to let the nurse check them over for injuries.

If Dee had been a little less puffed up with confidence and cheer, she would have been annoyed by this abrupt end to the duel. Winning by default because their last standing opponent had frozen up on stage was unsatisfying to say the least. They had been dominating the entire duel, and winning on a technicality felt like the victory based on their skill had been taken and replaced by one based on their opponent's incompetence.

As it was, it seemed hard to focus on the downsides of it. They had won, both Phaedra and herself completely untouched through the entirety of the duel (the recommended trip to the nurse would be skipped, what was the point?), and Dee was still wearing a grin so wide it threatened to split her face in half. One last thing to do. "Caerulimillious!" Aiming her wand up high, Dee let a shower of blue sparks rain down on the stage. Then, shrugging, she let her wand sink. "Guess we won that bet," she observed cheerfully. They had, technically - the duel had ended in twenty seconds, with some to spare.

Slipping her wand back into her pocket, Dee once again held her fist out to Phaedra. "Next practice, you gotta teach me the splitting thing! I'll hold you to it," she warned gleefully. Truth was, she'd come knocking at Phaedra's door sooner than that; while there would still be team practices, the main duelling season was ending with today.

Finally, she spun around towards their audience, bending into a sweeping bow for the adoring masses. A worthy finish to her duelling year, now all that was left was to hope the others would do just as well, and then there might be a trophy for them glimmering at the horizon.
