Emma was a little nervous. She was in charge of the Flying Torch Tag, and while she enjoyed the planning and was looking forward to see how it turned out, she was nervous that the students who had signed up that were older than her wouldn’t listen. But, she thought to herself, If necessary you can ask for help from others. Emma took a deep breath and just reminded herself that she wasn’t alone and she was sure that most would listen. If not she would be able to handle it but it wasn’t something she should assume would happen. Emma was also a little nervous about the flying bit but she had been practicing since her first flying lesson and even more so since she had volunteered to referee the game.

Even while nervous, Emma was truly excited to see if it turned out anything like what would occur in the muggle world. Even if it didn’t turn out exactly like the muggle world version, it would still look very cool.

The night sky was a dark blue mixing with pitch black, and the stars had appeared like little pinpoints of light. The moon shone brightly when a cloud didn’t lazily pass in front of it, and it was bright enough that you could see potential obstacles such as branches or trees. The committee had chosen a part of the grounds not too far from the main festivities but far enough that there was plenty of space to spread out and fly. There were torches already lit with the bluebell flames nearby, the torches leaning on nearby benches, the flames burning above the benches. Soon enough they would be grabbed by students who did not know how to cast the flames or did not wish to. Those who knew the spell and wished to use their wand to cast the bright blue flames could do so.

Taking a breath, Emma grabbed the borrowed whistle hanging around her neck, and blew a long, shrill note to ensure that everyone was paying attention to the rules. They were pretty straightforward and shouldn’t be too hard to follow. It didn't take long before she was done, and she made sure to answer any questions that were asked. Emma climbed onto the school broom she had chosen. For fairness, everyone participating would be using a school broom.

Kicking off, she soared into the air, making sure she was keeping an eye out for other people, and potential obstacles. Once she got high enough, she hovered several moments to give everyone participating enough time to grab torches (if they were using them) and clamor onto their brooms. Once she was sure everyone was ready to go, she shouted ”Ready?”

2. Each flag burned is a point. The person with the most points at the end of the game wins. If there is a tie, there will be a last man standing tie-breaker.
3. If your flag is burned, you are out.
4. Your flag must be tied to a visible part of your body and cannot be tucked into clothing. IE. Wrist, head, waist.
5. Please include your action with either the name of the person you wish to target or the word random in an OWL sent to My Account (Emma Wynn). When targeting a random person, I will use a number generator to pair people up. For the first post, you WILL NOT include any actions.
6. DO NOT use actions other than the ones listed below.
7. Any cheating that is seen will result in your player being removed for one round.
8. Your first post should be arriving to the area, grabbing a torch or pulling out your wand and then mounting and taking to the sky. You should not put any actions in until the next round.

Dodge - the player dodges all incoming attacks. The rolls are an evasion roll, the player's
evasion+5+25% of player's evasion (the dodge bonus is the same as the dueling bonus).

Cast Bluebell Flames - a 2nd year+ student casts the bluebell flames at another's players flag with their wand. The rolls are a wisdom roll, acc roll vs. evasion roll

Burn a player's flag - a first year tries to burn another player's flag off with the prelit torch. The rolls are an acc vs evasion roll

Disarm a player - a player tries to disarm a player of their torch/wand. There are a wisdom, acc, vs. evasion roll. If the player does not have expelliarmus in their trunk, they can instead attempt to disarm the player with non-magical means, which will be an acc vs. evasion roll. If one does attempt to disarm a player with non-magical means, there is a chance that you will be forced to sit out one round as punishment if caught. To determine if the player was caught cheating, a d10 dice will be rolled and if the dice rolls 1 to 5, then the player has not been caught and will not receive a punishment. If the dice rolls 6 to 10, the player was caught and will have to sit out one round for cheating.

Search for Wand/Torch - If a player is disarmed of their wand/torch, they must then search for wand/torch as their action in the next round. They will receive a bonus to their evasion roll while doing so equivalent to half of the dodge bonus (5+25% of the players evasion stats/2).

Choosing a broom-based game while wearing a dress that would flutter in the air obnoxiously was perhaps not the wisest idea. Had she known such a game would be organized at the Ball, she probably would have worn something more sporty. But Tarja wasn't going to back out, not out of an activity that could be such great fun. Well, at least her dress wasn't one of those bulky fairy-tale outfits she saw some of the other girls wearing.

She put her evening bag on the grass, attached the flag to the belt of her garment, picked up a torch and straddled one of the available brooms. The mount was ancient, shabby and probably offered poor control in anything other than ideal weather conditions. Just like the broom she had back at Koldovstoretz! The Russian girl kicked off the ground, rising to the air to survey the field. A lot of the competitors were much older, bigger kids. For a moment, she wondered if they would pick out the weakest opponents first. Quite a few of the participants were about her age, probably seen as a source of easy points in the eyes of the teenagers.

Her pondering was stopped by a gust of wind that made her semi-loose hair flap around her face. Ugh, her haircut was also not fitting for this pastime. And she had no means of trying it into a stable ponytail. Tarja tucked a few of the loose strands behind her ears and prepared herself for the sky battle.

And so, the depressed Slytherin Captain arrived.

Dan was honestly not even sure why he came to this. He had little interest in entering the hexwizard tournament, or even watching it. But, his therapist had insisted that he involve himself in fun activities, more so than just Quidditch. Take his mind off of Andy and Ozzy just abandoning him without a word.

He breathed deeply, and prepared to take to the skies again. This however, was something he never thought he would be going back to. He was not using his beloved Silver Arrow, but a lame school broom. Ugh.

If he had known he would be using THESE brooms, he would have signed up for the Barefoot Fire Walk.
It was probably on the sign up sheet, but Dan did not read all of it. There was a reason people ditched those things as soon as they could. Why couldn't he use his Silver Arrow? He didnt pay that many galleons for it to not use it.
'Oooh, but some people dont have silver arrows, nyeeeeh.'
That sounds a lot like a Not Dan's Problem sort of situation.

Regardless, he was ready to get started already.

Akira arrived at the Grounds, heading towards what seemed to be a small group gathering for the Flying Torch Tag event. This had to be it; the school brooms laid to the side, a row of bluebell torches, and a basket of flags. He scanned the crowd to see if he recognized anyone he knew, but none of the faces seemed familiar except for one. "Bakugo-san," he said with a slight nod of his head to the boy with pink hair. He scanned the boy -- who was now very much dressed like one -- from head to toe. "It seems that you've successfully changed." Indeed, Bakugo's suit was sharp and well-tailored. However, to his disconcertment, he saw that the boy's suit was also white and gold, like his own. Well, didn't that make them look like a right pair. He sighed inwardly. There was nothing regarding Bakugo that didn't take him by surprise today. "Well, at least I can say that I like your taste in fashion," was all that he managed to utter tersely before quickly turning away to listen to the instructions.

As the Hogwarts girl, Emma Wynn, explained the logistics of the game, Akira listened intently, until he realized that they actually had to use broomsticks to fly, and they could only use their wands to cast the Disarming Spell or cast Bluebell Flames. What. He had imagined that any and all wand use would be permitted in such a game, including jinxes, hexes, and curses if need be, and that he didn't have to get on a broom if he chose not to. It was named 'Flying Torch Tag', for heaven's sake, and he had assumed that the Torches would fly, not necessarily the students. And Akira knew he could cast a reliable Levitation Charm and maintain it.

Instead, he found himself looking skeptically at the batch of school brooms, which was nothing like his own reliable Silver Arrow. Granted, he used his Silver Arrow as little as possible -- Akira preferred not to mount a broom unless he absolutely had to. Just the idea of being up in the night air, not only trying to maintain his own balance but also trying to avoid the attacks of incoming students, was purely unsettling.

"Miss Wynn," he raised his hand at the end of her explanation. "Must we use brooms in this event? Could I -- for example -- use a Levitation Charm on my torch instead?" he asked, feeling that he might know the answer to that already, but a boy had to try. And if Miss Wynn denied him that possibility, there was only one thing he could do.

Resigning from the game was out of the question. Once Akira committed to something, he would always see it through, regardless of how much fear or blood it cost him.

Florian had practically almost ran out here from the Great Hall. No, he wasn't some damsel in distress, but, to be honest, he was certainly upset. The boy was used to getting whatever he wanted thanks to his parents, and he was close to throwing a temper tantrum about not being selected as the Beauxbatons Hexwizard Champion. But... he really couldn't do that here. He wasn't at home, where his parents could fix the situation. He shuddered at that thought. He wouldn't want them to anyway, he was tired of being treated like a little boy, regardless or not of if he acted like on.

He put on a steely face and sauntered his way over to the brooms. He was at least happy brooms had been provided, although if he hadn't of forgotten his own broom he certainly would have wanted to use that instead. At least this made the playing field even... well... was that even really a concern of his? At this point, yes, yes it was. He wasn't feeling his usual egotistic self, his typical haughty walls were crashing down around him. His only hope now was being selected for the team.

This, however, was not what he was meant to be focusing on. He needed to focus on the task at hand, the game of flying torch tag. He was grateful to his past self that he had inadvertently signed up, he hoped this would make a worthy distraction. Again trying to focus on the task at hand, he would pick up a broom, grab a flag that he would tie around his wrist, and listen to the student describing the rules. As she finished, he would nod and say a curt "Oui." Yes as he prepared himself.

There was little surprise for anyone that knew Pax quite well that they would be here to play. And not just to play, but to win. A game such as this one was exactly the type of game they would sign up for. No doubt, it was daunting to play against so many other students of varying ages, but if anything this could be a good chance for Pax to prov themself.

They headed over to the brooms, and quicky grabbed one, before dropping their jacket in a corner of the playing area. This would allow the flag tied around their wrist to be seen more easily, and even though Pax was all for winning, they would like for it to be fair. As it was a school broom, they were unsure how reliable it would be, but they had not much of a choice. Besides, everyone else would be playing on one. That was more reassuring.

After listening to Emma talk about the rules, Pax grabbed a torch and mounted the broom, trying to get a feel for how this broom would fly. To them, it was important to know the apparatus they would be using before playing. Once they were confident, they took off into the sky.

As soon as Hiro stepped out onto the game grounds, he started to smile.

The fresh air was perfect.

He loved being outdoors and flying was one of the best feelings in the entire world to him. Being on the first string of Mahoutokoro's quidditch team was something that brought him great joy. Not from the prestige but because he was allowed to fly around all he wanted and do whatever he wanted on the broom. He didn't have to care about being polite or nice. There was only one thing on his mind and that was to go after the bludgers and 'beat' them away.

Usually towards other players.

It was really refreshing for him and he never missed a single chance to practice.

Not to mention the fact that he loved all the players on their team and got along with them pretty well for the most part. When it truly mattered, they came together as a team.

When it didn't, they could bicker like old friends and mess around with eachother. He knew a lot of people didn't like when he called them by their first names with no honorifics. But they'd gotten used to him doing it and now seemed to have given up on getting him to cater to their wishes. Of course, he was the only one they allowed to do so, but that was because he was special! Hah, or so he thought. They might still ask him to do so once or twice or thrice.

But would give up when he paid them no mind and reluctantly accept it as being an unavoidable annoyance. There were four people already present on the course, including Akira, and Hiro glanced around, taking in the surroundings. Two girls and one boy were already up in the air on their brooms. The thought made him sigh. The brooms were school brooms, so everyone would have an equal chance at winning at the Flying Torch Tag game.

But Hiro really wanted a Silver Arrow.

However, he would probably never be able to get one.

Why was this?

Because his parents hated him and pretended as if he didn't exist and Hiro had no way of getting a steady income while at Mahoutokoro. The only way he could eventually get one would be as an adult. But better late than never. The sky was a dark blue mixed with a blanket of black with gleaming stars and beautiful moonlight. It was a nice clear night for a game like this. Hiro glanced over at Akira as his date spoke to him. "I have!" He said to him.

"I also see that you matched with me! See? It's another sign that we're destined to be with eachother!" He said with a cheeky grin and came over to give Akira a quick hug, his typical greeting of people. One of the two girls started explaining the rules and everyone listened until she was done. Akira tried to ask whether they had to use brooms and Hiro shook his head. It was obvious the boy didn't want to use a school broom. Well, to him.

He didn't blame him.

If Hiro had a Silver Arrow and he was forced to use a school broom instead, there would be a noticeable difference. Plus, Akira wasn't on the quidditch team at Mahoutokoro.

For that matter, why had he signed up for this? Oh right, he'd signed them up together. But Akira could have said he'd wanted to do the other one and Hiro would have done it. It wasn't as if he'd set his heart on doing this one. But maybe Akira had been under the impression it would be flying torches and not flying students with torches. So he'd wanted to do this one. Hiro shook his head as he banished his revolving thoughts and focused on the game at hand.

He went over to the stack of brooms and picked one up.

Then, he glanced back over at Akira and picked another one up just in case.

Setting the broom down beside Akira, Hiro went back to pick up two lit torches and returned to Akira's side. He handed one to his date and then raised his hand into the air. "Ue!" Up! Hiro said clearly and with confidence. The broom shot up into his hand and he mounted it, heading up into the sky as he looked around him. There was ample space, so no problems should occur during the game. Hiro had to admit, the whole atmosphere was exciting now.

The torch was carried in his right hand, while his left wrist had the flag tied to and wrapped around, so it wouldn't fall off easily from its current position.

Hopefully, Hiro would last for awhile in this game and not get taken out immediately.

As Maximilien "Maxi" de Fostoncy [x]
English · #586d9d | French · #056b68
interacts Phyllis Stanwood (@Bridget Collins)
Flying Torch Tag.

With Phyllis by his side the pair made their way towards the game area, Maxi felt much relieved in the open air. Finally, he was able to flee from gossiping crowds for sometime - and to relax himself a bit in the air. This broom-based game definitely sounded like dangerous, with fire and crashing involved, though Maxi was confident that he, as a broom racer, could live through it. And he was good at casting spells - definitely better than those simple-minded sporty guys who knew nothing but broom riding - so he would be able to extinguish as many as possible torches. Plus, he regarded himself as being evasive. All of these adding up made him competent and could no doubt survive through. Meanwhile Phyllis seemed interested enough in participating, and seeing her put down the thought of champion selection set his mind at ease. Deciding to temporarily forget about the disappointing choices of the goblet, Maxi’s dark grey eyes flashed towards the night sky. The weather was surprisingly good today, and the deep blue colour reminded him of his home country, where sunny mornings and starry nights were nearly never absent. Lyon was a beautiful city to be sure, and much better than the terrible weather here in England. They didn’t expect that much rain and clouds back there, anyway.

But tonight was different, the air cleaning without fog for once. The crowd gathering on the grounds was visible now, and Maxi headed towards them along with the auburn-haired girl. “Here we are!” as soon as they approached he would announce, quite merrily. Looking around, Maxi was satisfied to see that there were not so many athletic-looking guys gathering - which meant that he wouldn’t be likely to be thrown off his broom rudely. He grabbed a flag and carefully tied it to his left wrist - for a moment he hesitated, fearing that when his flag was being burnt his wrist would suffer from the heat and flames as well - but seeing that he couldn’t find a better place to tie it, Maxi decided to just go with it. Eyeing the torches, his hand firmly reached for his wand in his pocket. No doubt, he trusted more in his spell-casting skills than torch-holding ones.

Picking a random broom - school brooms as they were, he didn’t expect that speed and agility from them - and mounting it, he would tilt his head towards Phyllis. “Ready?” he laughed slightly. “The champion between us sould soon be decided.” a seldom-seen mischievous light glittered in his dark grey eyes. Except for the fact that he had to ride a broom in a suit - and Phyllis in a ball gown - everything was perfect so far.

At least it seemed so.

The time to fly had finally come.

Ari let out a loud sigh as his eyes scanned the grounds. He'd had to run back to get his Silver Arrow, and returned just in time. He was still catching his breath as he walked to where the race was going to be.

He started looking around for someone he knew. He recognized...nobody. Nobody at all. This was a game against strangers. Rather intimidating strangers. But were they only intimidating because Ari didn't know them, or were they actually a threat to his wellbeing?

What was he thinking? This game in itself was a threat to his wellbeing! It involved fire! This was a horrible idea!

Stop trying to talk yourself out of this. You'll be fine. You can win this thing.

Ari twirled the broom with one hand, pausing once he was sure he was where he needed to be to start the game. The fresh air in his lungs felt relieving after the suffocation of social anxiety had affected him so. He had been trying to find himself a place of belonging in the party inside, and that just wasn't possible.

But now, he took his torch and tied his flag to his hip. He forced himself to keep his head high and square his shoulders. He was going to do his best here. He'd conquer his inner demons.

The Great Hall had been nice, adorned in flowers, topped by a magical ceiling, and featuring music Phyllis had deemed acceptable. Thanks to Maxi, she had enjoyed the ball aspects she might normally find boring or stuffy. But the moon shone brightly on the dark, star-speckled canvas of the sky and the cool air was pleasant. Later it would probably be annoyingly cold, what with the decided lack of long sleeves on her dress, but that would be a problem for future her. For now, the expanse of grounds felt freeing after being inside, open space spread out before them and beckoning to stretch their figurative wings. She wondered if Maxi was even more glad to be out of there--the din of cheers and gathered crowd seemed much more her thing than his.

They arrived at the designated area, and Phyllis found herself surprised. "Oh, it's not real fire," she commented to Maxi. Indeed, she had been expecting billowing flames and fountains of lava (rather like the Minecraft Nether, though Phyllis would not understand that reference, courtesy of her magical upbringing), not these harmless bluebells. "Safety point to Hogwarts?" By the nature of their dare, Phyllis was supposed to be the one proving Hogwarts balls were safe. Truth be told, her point was more that they could be fun in spite of hazards, and she really had expected actual fire. With how often the school was ablaze, it seemed only natural they'd use the real stuff.

Well, Phyllis hadn't been very worried about it in the first place, but the game should be more fun without the risk of burns. She followed Maxi to the stock of supplies, tying her own flag around her arm a bit higher than Maxi's choice of wrist so the ends wouldn't get in her way, but who knew where things would flap about once they were in the air. She took a moment to survey the brooms before choosing one, the attention to detail typically uncharacteristic of Phyllis. It wasn't meticulousness, by any means, but she was looking for a broom in decent shape. Though fairly sure she could handle the quirks in flight control that went with older brooms--slower, more delayed movements, favoring a certain tilt--it would be nice to have something that functioned well, particularly since she'd gotten used to the smooth flying of her Silver Arrow. Finding one that looked satisfactory, she took it in hand.

Now for her choice of flag-lighting method. It was no question for Maxi, his wand swiftly drawn. But for Phyllis? She had confidence in many things, but spell-casting was not one of them. Her skill had definitely improved, some of the concentration pieces clicking as time went on, but there was a reason beyond just her love of flying why Quidditch was her sport. Doing wand movements and everything while flying was going to be hard. Then again, eyeing her broom, she wasn't sure the torch was the best idea. Any other time, she would be happy to count on her hand-eye coordination, but she wasn't sure this broom had the speed needed to come up on someone and light their flag. Besides, if this was a competition between her and Maxi, she might as well play the same. Phyllis drew her wand. "Ready. May the best win."
