2022, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 4

To say that Lydia was anxious about this duel was reductive. After the way she had fainted so early and easily in the previous duel, not to mention the one from the first stage as well, the redheaded girl had grown less and less confident in her duelling skills; self doubting every single move, she spent a lot of time trying to get better, and to think of ways in which to improve herself, studying more and concentrating for the whole time on school and homework.

Stepping onto the platform she tried her best to hide that away, she didn't want Lea to see her like that; she was the Captain after all, she had to maintain a composure and to look sure of what she was doing. Having Dealla as moderator didn't help Lydia's self esteem either; Dealla was a really talented duellist, they had faced each other in the previous stage and she had won against her and Julian...

Taking a deep breath, Lydia tried her best to shake the thought of the recent loss away, and instead focused on their opponents. She had seen Lamik and Everly in action during the previous stage in which they had managed to turn the fate of the duel around and bring home the victory, so she knew they were skilled duellists and that she and Lea would need to give it their best.

Lydia concentrated back on Dealla, listening to what she was saying, and nodded, before she assumed her position and looked at Lea. "We can do this Lea," she said, her voice sounding sure and determined, "No matter what happens, let's give it our best!" Giving Lea a smile, she turned back towards their opponents and concentrated, ready for their first move.

Lea was cautious. There was some improvement throughout this season, but it didn't compare to last year's (admittedly just one) win. Perhaps that was due to being partnered with a fifth year, but she preferred seeing improvement- and that had yet to be the case. There was some improvements, though, as she hadn't gotten knocked out last duel whereas she had the first duel of the year.

Being partnered with one of the duelling captains was very surreal to the second year- and she wasn't entirely sure why. Perhaps it was the authority that came with such a role, a new want to prove herself as for why she should be on the team and her interest in the sport. Whatever the case, it was a strange mix of calm and nerves as she walked onto the platform and took up her position. The hufflepuff offered a smile back to Lydia. "Always- we got this!"

The duel started, and it started off... confusingly.

Everly and Lydia did not even attempt to cast at their opponents, instead choosing to influence the environment to give their team the advantage. A wall of smoke came pouring from Everly's wand, enveloping the stage, and Dee squinted through the hazy air, trying to make out what was happening. Lydia, on the other hand, targeted the air above the Lion's heads, summoning a large storm cloud that immediately started crackling ominously.

Lea chose a more traditional spell, identifying Lamik as their more dangerous opponent and trying to disarm him. The spell, although well cast, missed its target by a narrow margin.

Lamik... and this was where the confusion started. Apparently Lamik was one of those students that had the ability to split spells, and target both opponents at once. Dee was quite certain he hadn't been able to do that a year ago, but it seemed he had learned since then. The targeting part, however, seemed to be more difficult than expected, although that was not entirely his fault. Two streaks of flames went off, one towards Lydia, one towards Lea, but then the one targeting Lea also started curving towards Lydia instead, who was now being targeted twice. That happened, sometimes. Odder was that Everly suddenly started moving, sprinting forward, and threw herself into the path of the flames.

Dee blinked, surprised, when the flames hit Everly, while Lydia neatly stepped out of the way of the second blast of green fire. Huh. How... interesting. Everly did know how duels worked, right?

A swing and a miss.

Lea had to admit that her spell got a lot closer than she had anticipated- but the Gryffindors knew how to dodge. Still, Lydia's spell had worked which was good- half a success was better than none. "Nice!" They'd glimpse at the clouds, realizing that they were being enveloped by far lower clouds. Ah, this again. Smokescreens were remarkably annoying, as Lea had learned last duel. She suspected this time would not be much different. Still, it was light enough that the second year could see the flames approaching her, then turning towards Lydia. "Watch!-"

And then get hit by a Gryffindor. "Out?" Lea blinked, before glancing towards the older hufflepuff. Never before had she seen that, although- it surprised the second year when she thought she could almost understand why.

Pointing her wand towards the sky, Lydia did her best and couldn't help but feel proud of herself as she saw the stormy clouds gathering above the Gryffindor team. Hopefully the lighting will help them during this duel. As she glanced back towards their opponents, giving a thumbs-up to Lea, Lydia noticed the smoke that was starting to cover the field and frowned; she didn't like not seeing well, especially when spells would be flying towards her and Lea. But speaking of spells flying around: Lydia saw how Lamik flames were somehow directed towards her, and for a second she internally panicked; one thing was avoiding one flame, but two? How could she possibly manage to do-

Lydia didn't even finish forming that thought that she dodged out of the way of one of the flames, just as Everly positioned herself between Lydia and the other fire. The Gryffindor girl got hit, and while Lydia felt kind of sorry -after all, being aflame was not nice and it hurt- she also couldn't help the tiny smirk that appeared on her face. In all her time as a part-veela on the duelling team, this was the first time that someone actually had stepped in front of a spell for her; it was nice, and she hoped that it would continue to happen during the rest of the duel.

The last thing she saw before the smoke became too thick was that Lamik still had his wand, which meant that Lea's spell did not hit him. "Hopefully this smoke won't last too long!" she said and offered Lea one last smile, before the smoke made seeing people and spells more difficult.
