While Kim and Lilly talked about desserts, which was a bit of a sudden departure from talking about class or magic, Sophia listened to them for any scrap of knowledge about the wizarding world she could find. She knew both had lifetimes of experience with magic, and she could only hope that some of what they knew would rub off on her.

While she was listening, she searched through her stack of books for the ones they would need for this class. Transfiguration, it was called. She didn't know which books they would need, but so far, Book of Spells seemed to be a staple. She searched frantically for some parchment and her quill as well and readied her supplies for a productive class meeting. She prided herself on being a decent student, even as a muggle.

Satisfied, she turned her attention fully back to her friends, noting that they were once again talking about the castle. Sophia wasn't complaining. She loved talking about the castle too, but that was an odd transition to food talk and right back to where they were. She shrugged.

Sophia was eager to hear Kim's appraisal of the castle, after all, and she was more eager to hear any tips or tricks he had for getting past the stairs in a safer, more efficient manner. Maybe there was an elevator? Surely they would have been shown an elevator by the teachers if that were the case.

She turned to Kim and watched him expectantly with a grin. He always knew so much about magic and Hogwarts.

As the conversation continued about the staircase, Kim tried not to think about it.

Anything having to do with heights was not good.

He seriously hoped nothing bad would happen when he was on a staircase. But going from how things worked inside the castle, it would only be a matter of time before he got caught.

Well, hopefully it would be later rather than sooner. Kim glanced over at Sage as she spoke about chocolate and his expression lightened a little. "Chocolate has a tendency to make you feel better. It's a great invention." He remarked and as Sage asked him about his impressions, Kim thought about it for a few seconds. "My parents told me a lot about it beforehand, so I knew what to expect. I also did some research on my own too."

"But knowing what to expect and actually experiencing it firsthand is quite a different experience." Kim admitted. "Hearing the Hat inside my mind was an eye-opening event. I knew it would happen, but when it actually did it was kind of a unique experience." He told them. And the staircases had been frightening to witness, even from a distance. Not that he would comment, no need to bring the convo back.

Oh, great.

Sage had brought the topic back to him again.

A mental image came to mind of the staircases moving around on him and Kim shuddered.

Seeing that both Sage and Sophia were now looking at him expectantly he blinked. What were they waiting for from him? Ah, right. A way to navigate the staircases more effectively. "Avoid staircases." He said, bluntly. "If you can't, wait for at least one other person to head up the stairs. If you walk close to them, they will either get trapped with you or you both will make it before the staircase changes." Kim told the two girls.

He didn't know if this would work but it seemed to work inside his mind. It even made sense. Time would only tell whether or not this would actually work for them.

It was around this time that the professor revealed himself from beneath an invisibility cloak.

Kim's eyes widened, having not expected this. He didn't make a sound, or show any physical movements outwardly, but he was definitely surprised by this entrance. Professor Wade's introduction was 100% unique and had totally captured Kim's attention at least. The older wizard went on to explain that he originated from the United States of America. He had already guessed that from his accent. It seemed as if it was southern if he had placed it right?

And then the class officially started.

Hearing what Kim had to say about Hogwarts had Sage nodding vehemently in agreement.

Gathering information was well and good but only if it proved useful and accurate. After all, nothing beats experience, her historian father liked to say.

If there were other passages that allowed one to switch floors within the castle, thereby circumventing the much-dreaded stairs, Sage would have taken them without a second thought. Surely Gus would have mentioned such conveniences before, unless he had meant for her to suffer, that is. She ought to check with an older housemate just in case; you'll never know unless you ask, right?

“I see, then at least you won’t have to go it alone!” Good thinking, though that could easily work the other way. What if the person with you was even more afraid of the stairs than you were? What then? Ack, better not think about that.

Kim’s change in expression alerted her to the presence of the Transfiguration Professor. A weathered-looking wizard had seemingly appeared from out of thin air, though the shimmering fabric in his hands hinted at some magical tool - the invisibility cloak! Sage didn’t think she’d see the actual thing in action! Father would be delighted to hear about this, the brunette was sure.

“Woah,” murmured Sage with tempered anticipation; she found herself sitting up straight, quill and parchment in hand. They wouldn’t be learning anything of substance yet. First classes were prone to include introductions, classroom rules and perhaps, a light discussion of the subject matter. Only time would tell if their Professor would follow suit.

No no no no no no no no NO!

Sophia had seen some crazy things on her first day so far. Dancing skeletons, magical potions, and from what she'd heard, she'd even eventually see some flying brooms and other such craziness. And yet, every time she saw something new, it was just as overwhelming as the last little bit of magic she'd witnessed. This time was no exception.

That man - her Professor, apparently - had appeared almost completely out of nowhere with just a swish of an invisible cloak! What on Earth was going on? Everyone else seemed impressed, or at least appreciative in some way of this display of magic, but none of them seemed particularly surprised. (Unless Sophia was just missing someone else's reaction.)

She panicked and reached for her quill and a little scrap of parchment. She thought she had the hang of writing with a quill after all of her vigorous note-taking in Potions class, so she worked hard to scribble down a quick little note on the parchment.
What the heck was that? Was that normal? Why is nobody freaking out?
She slide the small scrap of parchment in Kim and Sage's general direction, hoping one of them could explain why this was considered normal, because, even in Sophia's limited experience with magic, appearing out of nowhere was not normal.

She suddenly realized she was missing the entire lecture from the teacher and her mental panic was even worse. She tried to pick up where she could, but she was now totally lost in the lecture. He was saying something about atoms, or something, but that didn't make sense! Wasn't that muggle science?

Oh no!

Their conversation came to a halt.

After all, it was classtime, not interaction time. That is, unless it had to do with the professor.

Kim listened to Professor Wade as he went on to speak about how there were very few rules. But that two of the most important ones were regarding safety within his class.

That made perfect sense. Hearing him speak of students not being allowed to use magic and to follow the safety procedures he would teach them was nice. At least they wouldn't have to figure them out on their own! Hearing that the professor had grown up in the United States didn't surprise him. Kim had heard accents before from various different people. Professor Wade did not have any kind of London accent, at least not that Kim could pick up on that is.

Nor did it sound like he came from any European or Asian country. Therefore, it stood to reason that he came from the United States. Process of elimination and based off an educated guess. He was distracted when Sophia slid a piece of parchment towards him and Sage. Upon looking down at it, a faint smirk came to his lips and he took the parchment to scribble something down in response. While this was going on, the lecture continued without them.

Hopefully, Sophia wouldn't be able to multi-task.

He was making use of an invisibility cloak.
That's why students were caught off guard and were surprised.
It's not common for a professor to do something like this.
So, no you're not alone.

Kim wrote and passed the note back to Sophia, so she could read what he'd written.

Now, there was a diagram on the blank wall, it looked as if there were protons, neutrons, nucleus and other things. Probably something to do with physics of some sort, he guessed.

Transfiguration! PV Sage Lilly, Sophia Nelson
Sage has never heard Transfiguration explained in such a manner. She had difficulty wrapping her head around the concept of matter though she supposed it made sense - in a way.

Magic to her was sensed and willed into action; it came in a flurry of feelings, in the unfurling of thoughts. She had no idea how magic affected its target's physical properties in such a way Prof Wade had described.

Admittedly, she envied the kids who nodded along like the subject was common knowledge. Her brief stint in a Muggle primary school had been limited to reading and writing and doing sums; truly, Muggles were so creative and respectable in their pursuit of knowledge.

She watched the exchange of notes between Soph and Kim, wondering what it was about. She only had to look at Soph's face to hazard a guess. By all means, a man appearing out of thin air was not a common sight. Even Sage had been befuddled for a moment. Kim would surely give his intellectual opinions on the subject. Besides, he looked as if he came from a household that could afford to own a magic cloak or two.

Sage shrugged in reply, offering her friends a sheepish smile. Then, she cocked her head towards the Professor in an attempt to follow the lesson. Atoms, protons and neutrons - bah, what a curious way to think! Never had she encountered such terms before so she jotted them down hastily. How did Muggles know these things in such detail, anyway? She wondered if they had an invention that allowed them to see beyond what the naked eye could not. If so, that'd be revolutionary! Sophia would know, she reckoned, being a muggleborn herself.

Her queries will have to wait, though. If she intended to show Gus just how smart she was, then this lesson must have her undivided attention.

Ignoring the boy's cocky smirk, Sophia read Kim's note anxiously. Oh geez. An invisibility cloak? Wizards and witches really did have everything. She'd thought she'd seen it all at Diagon Alley just a few days prior, but apparently she'd seen nothing yet.

She mouthed a quick 'thank you' to Kim and took a page from Sage's book, turning her attention to the lesson.

It... wasn't all that awful, actually. She'd struggled horribly in Charms, but this class was - so far - feeling like a normal muggle's science class. She knew the basics about atoms and the subatomic particles from her old school, so most of this was actually just review. Who'd have thought magic could be taught in such a scientific manner?

Certainly not Sophia.

Confident in her knowledge, Sophia turned her attention back to the parchment, where she began to doodle, listening to the teacher's lesson as she would a background YouTube video back home while doing something else. Maybe she would be lucky, and every class would involve some sort of muggle lesson alongside the lecture? That'd certainly make things easier for her.

As she listened to the teacher mentioning conservation of Mass and Energy, Sophia decided that maybe, just maybe, Transfiguration class wouldn't be so terribly awful after all!
