Emma had had a pretty excellent day. Classes today had pushed her, but not to the point of frustration. She had actually managed to complete most of the tasks in class, and was somewhat ahead on her homework, shockingly, though of course there would always be more added, but still. It was a good day. Aided by the fact that they had had some particularly delicious cake for dessert.

Emma had gone back to the Hufflepuff Common Room, and went to grab some things to work on, but she had struggled to focus, and decided that maybe taking a break and doing some more research about the magical world would be better. After all, she was far enough ahead to not run into trouble for putting it off for one night.

She had put her things carefully away, and then grabbed the library book she had finished earlier, walking slowly to the library, not once getting lost. She was thankful as the castle seemed to change almost daily and she had struggled quite a bit when she first got here. Striding into the library, she returned her book, and then wondered around the aisles. Finding a particularly strange one called Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions, Emma chuckled quietly and pulled it from the shelf, heading towards the armchairs.

Spotting someone sitting and reading, Emma craned her head a bit to see what they were reading, always curious. Spying something they were pretty sure was a muggle book, Emma quietly asked ”Is that your copy? Or did your parents send it to you?” She hadn’t spent much time exploring the library beyond some books she had referenced for classes, or to learn more about the Wizarding World. But she was always looking for ways to get her hands on more books, and people who were bibliophiles.

Settling down into her comfy chair, Bailey opens the cover of her book. Talking out loud, she said How many muggle books have been written by witches or wizards? And have other creatures like goblins wrote books that muggle read?. Then Bailey heard someone speak. Thinking it was someone answering her question, she looked up. It was a normal looking girl, who looked to be about four and a half feet tall, with blazing red hair that was a bit wavy. She also had pale white skin and blue gray eyes. Her eyes kinda reminded Bailey of storm clouds. They were the right color.
Then she realized the girl had asked her if her book, Little Women, was hers of the library’s.
“Oh..Um… it is mine. I brought it from home. It was originally my great grandmothers; she got it when it was not super popular yet. I got it as a going away gift of sorts from my mum.
Looking to see if the girl was holding any books, Bailey realized that she had not introduced herself.
“Oh… and my name is Bailey. Bailey Glade. What is your name?” And what house and year are you? I am a second year Ravenclaw.

Emma brought the book she had found to her chest, biting her lip slightly, nervous now that she had spoken. It wasn’t something she would typically do but anything about books or gardening tended to make her feel comfortable starting conversations. And it was the library. Worse came to worse, she could leave under the pretext that there was too much noise. But she had started this and she was determined to expand her comfort zone. This was one way to do so.

Emma grinned in relief when the friendly looking girl spoke, happy that she seemed interested in talking. She had shoulder length blonde, brown hair with blue and purple tips which looked so cool! Emma had some interest in dying her hair but she figured it wouldn’t look as good as the tips on the girl’s hair. Her blue-green eyes looked kind and made Emma feel comfortable.
”Oh, that’s great! Books that have that kind of history always seems so much more than the story itself. Is it your favorite? Or is there another book you like better?” Emma blushed slightly, her face warming, as she realized she asked the question that she always hated others asking of her. She always struggled with figuring out her favorites. It usually depended on her mood and what she felt like reading at that moment. ”Only if you want to answer. You probably came here to be alone.” Emma half-turned, feeling a little out of sorts.

Turning back slightly, she ducked her head slightly but still looking at the girl as she introduced herself. ”Hi Bailey. I’m Emma Wynn, first year Hufflepuff. It’s nice to meet you.” Emma gave a little half wave in her direction. ”Ravenclaw is cool. I think if I wasn’t a Hufflepuff, I would have been Ravenclaw. Have you ever thought of what other house you would have been sorted in?” Emma babbled, unsure of what else to say. Though she quickly closed her mouth and clutched the book to her chest tightly.

Emma blushed slightly as the girl answered her question, understanding the dilemma easily. ”Oh, I understand. I thought about that as soon as I asked the question. I have favorites depending on mood really. Right now I’m in a detectivey mood so Sherlock Holmes is at the top of the list.” Emma usually read books depending on what she was feeling. Otherwise it made it difficult to even read it. She had been known to put a book down and avoid it only to get in the mood for that genre and pick it back up and finish it rather quickly.

Emma grinned at Bailey’s answer, happy that Bailey was still conversing with her. ”oh! That’s interesting. That we both think we could have been in the other’s house I mean.”

Emma stood for a moment, searching for topics to prolong the conversation, wanting to continue although she was in the library so maybe the girl wanted to read instead. ”Is it okay if I sit? I know I hate being disrupted when reading, and then I did the exact thing to you. I can go if you’d like!” Emma tried to decide if she should go but decided it wasn’t really up to her, instead it was up to Bailey. If she felt like conversing, she would. But Emma couldn’t resist, and slipped in a question. ”What’s the most interesting thing you’ve found in the library?”

Emma was glad she had come to the library, even if she wasn’t fulfilling her original plan. While she liked having plans, and hated when they were disrupted, she was flexible enough that this didn’t feel uncomfortable, probably because they were talking about one of Emma’s favorite subjects, books. That put Emma straight into her comfort zone and even though her brain was overthinking some things like if she was being rude or interruptive of Bailey’s time, it wasn’t a panic of what to say and what to do. That was much appreciated as Emma’s brain had been known to run away from her.
Emma nodded, her grin widening as she realized that Bailey was an avid reader like herself.

“Oh, I know that feeling. I was always wanting to go to the library, and then I’d come out with these large stacks. Understandable, I think I was so encouraged to read at a young age, that it just kind of grew into a love very easily.” Emma had always discussed the books she read with her grandfather, and continued to do so today although less so the magical ones. Her parents had wanted to keep things somewhat on the download with the muggles in their lives so it hadn’t been shared. Her grandparents had been told she’d gotten a scholarship to a private school in Scotland, which could arguably be the truth, just excluding the magic.

Grateful that it was clear that Bailey wanted to continue talking, Emma sank down into a chair, putting the book down beside her with the spine sitting on the chair. That way the pages wouldn’t be folded, one of the most horrible things that could be done to books. “Thank you! I’m glad to hear that. I can always use new bibliophile friends. Books just seem to come to life so much more when you can discuss it with others.”

Emma almost clapped her hands together when Bailey said she was from a muggle family. But she stopped her hands from meeting remembering this was a library and there was still some expectation of quiet. Blushing, she dropped her hands to her lap, and then quietly but excitedly said, “I was so surprised by the moving pictures! I just couldn’t believe it for the first bit. I’m also from a muggle family so this whole thing is so surprising. It seems like there’s so much to learn about this world now that magic has been added. I’m honestly surprised at how much there is to read about it, that I just keep finding more and more books specifically on the magical world. It’s kind of interesting to see where the muggle world and magical world intersect as well, like the events that effected muggles but the muggles never realized about magic.” Emma shut her mouth, worried that she had rambled on a little too much, but it was just so exciting to meet others like her who hadn’t known the magical world existed. “Have you struggled much with the whole magic thing?” Emma asked, curious if Bailey had had a similar experience as Emma.

When Emma’s grin widened, Bailey’s smile did too. She was rather like an empath- she fed off of the emotions of others. Not physically eat them, but you get it. If they were sad, so was she. If they were mad or happy, she would be too.
As Emma explained that she was taught to love reading at a young age, Bailey said “Me too! I was homeschooled and it gave me so much free time to go to the library and I was so happy with that!”
Then Emma expressed her surprise at the moving pictures and other magic things, and asked if Bailey had had a similar experience. Bailey nodded as Emma spoke, understanding the feeling completely. “Yes totally. I was so…. Awestruck by all of the magic and couldn’t believe that some people had grown up knowing about it. I mean that make sense, but for a while I was confused why we didn’t tell everyone about it and share with the muggles. Now that we are in… slightly harder and darker times I think I understand a bit more, but still. If we opened st. Mungos to muggles with cancer they could be healed.”
Worried she had said something wrong, or something that Emma would dislike or disagree with, Bailey stopped talking and waited for a response.

Emma was enjoying the conversation, happy that she had found a fellow bibliophile to talk with. Books were always a topic that she could go on and on about with little prompting. Of course that meant she had to watch herself so that she didn’t bore the poor person to death, but that was better than awkward pauses, or trying to think up questions or topics to talk about. Seriously, there should be books about how to converse with others or something. Though there probably was, Emma just wasn’t going to look for them. If she was spotted reading those types of books, it would be very weird and she’d get all embarrassed, and things would be more awkward than normal.

“That’s awesome! What was it liked being homeschooled? Sometimes I dreamed about being homeschooled.” There had been times where she had been awkward or things had happened at school that made her wish she could be homeschooled if only to avoid the awkwardness, but that had not been in the books and usually whatever it was would blow over. Then school would become fun, or at least the time with her friends would be fun and she wouldn’t give it another thought.

“No, I agree. There are some things like the healing and other spells that it’s just like we could make the world a better place but then you read about the witch trials or things like that, and realize that maybe muggles would perhaps react in a negative way out of fear or something like that. I mean it was pretty crazy to think magic actually existed.”
