Backdate flashback: August 2021

𝕬 second-year soon-to-be Regina Miller stood stiffly before her tutor, retired Hit Wizard and Durmstrang graduate Dragomir Shervashidze of the prestigious House of Shervashidze--one of the oldest Bulgarian Pureblood lineages. A man well into his nineties and still looking not a day over forty, and with enough qualifications to provide the youngest Miller Heiress with the knowledge she craved to hone her gifted skills in the Dark Arts Defence.

Regina had known ahead of time what lesson Mr Shervashidze was going to teach her that day, and the ravenette held back a nervous swallow at the way her tutor's stern green eyes were scrutinizing her face. The older man circled her slowly with his hands clasped behind his back, and the girl barely suppressed a flinch as his baritone voice laced with a thick Bulgarian accent abruptly broke the silence.

"Give me the definition of 'fear', Regina. What think you when you hear that word?"

Regina couldn't help an instinctive shudder at the first (memory) image which popped into her mind--a bookshelf tipping over the top of her head, its heavy weight crushing her tiny six-year-old frame underneath. A wicked, cruel laugh of a girl whom she shared every feature with but the orchid purple of her irises. (What could have been if Regina's magic had not manifested for the first time and saved her.)

"One of the seven universal emotions experienced by everyone around the world, sir," Regina replied dutifully, keeping her voice stoic and steady. "Fear comes with the threat of harm, either physical, emotional or psychological. Real or imagined."

The Miller tutor came to a halt in front of her, posture strict but his eyes gleaming slightly, pleased.

"Correct," Mr Shervashidze said. "It is traditionally 'negative' emotion, but it is important in keeping us safe because it teaches us to cope with potential danger. This is our lesson today. In the future, when you see Boggart, you face your greatest fear and control it with the Boggart-Banishing Spell."

The old Bulgarian then placed himself next to her, facing the same direction forward as he lifted his dominant arm and pulled back his sleeve of his onyx black robe for Regina to have a clear view of his hand.

"This is how you cast the spell. Watch and repeat the movement."

The girl nodded, her clever orchid eyes following the tip of her tutor's wand as he drew what seemed to be an upside down little bump from left to right in the air. Regina raised her own hand with her aspen wand held tightly in her palm, and replicated the figure flawlessly. Mr Shervashidze nodded approvingly.

"Excellent, now repeat after me, without your wand. Riddikulus!"

"Riddikulus!" Regina recited loudly with confidence.

"Again, stronger on the 'kull'."

"Riddikulus!"

"Very good, Regina," The man commended. "You are not allowed magic outside Hogwarts, but you practice in school and report to me with letter. Understand?"

"Understood, Mr Shevarshidze."

Present time. Permission to lightly godmod Orion Lécuyer granted.
The raven-haired Lion was now present--tall and wand-ready--inside an empty classroom with an old and worn cupboard placed a few inches in front of her, shaking violently with agitated Boggart trapped inside, courtesy of her Defence Professor Lécuyer. Regina had requested him to help her with this particular subject and he had agreed, on the condition that he would remain in the background to assist her should she need it.

Regina's hair stood on end the instant the amortal creature was released and stepped out of its temporary confinement. Her heartbeat raced with trepidation as none other than her contemptible sister manifested in front of her eyes with an almost maniacal expression. Regina felt herself taking a step back instinctively, her eyes growing wide and her jaw clenching tightly.

"Disgrace! Blood traitor!" Boggart-Rebecca Miller shrieked, body language hostile. "Weakling! Filth! Coward!"

Regina's purple irises flashed, aspen wand held in a white knuckle-grip as she began mentally reciting the incantation in her mind and drawing the correct hand movement.

"You will never surpass me! You shall be stripped of the family fortune and banished from the manor! Burnt from the family tapestry like the ignominy you are--"

"RIDDIKULUS!"

The Gryffindor shouted from the top of her lungs, and Boggart-Rebecca was immediately lit on fire with a scream and transformed into an insect. Regina didn't even notice the creature being locked away in the cupboard once more, too caught up in the after-effects of her fear as she tried to regulate her heavy breathing. She was trembling from head to toe.

It was done. She mastered the spell. But now the screeching words would forever haunt her mind.

Backdate flashback: August 2021

"𝕿oday I teach you Full Body-Bind Curse, a powerful spell to immobilize your opponent," Mr Shevarshidze said as he stood next to Regina, both of them facing a training dummy at the opposite corner of the room. His posture was poised and guarded, the stance of someone who had engaged in combat for many years. "Very dangerous, so watch carefully."

Regina nodded, orchid eyes keen and attentive as she observed her tutor pulled back the sleeve of his onyx robe and raised his wand. His movements were deliberately slow and precise as he drew the shape of a hook anti-clockwise, followed by a horizontal line before slashing downward. Regina felt the vibrations of his impressive magic shaking through her core as Mr Shevarshidze's voiced boomed with the incantation.

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Instantly, a blinding white light shot out from the tip of the ex-Hit Wizard's wand and Regina's head whipped to where the training dummy was as the curse hit its target, making the mechanical arms snapped stuck along the torso before the entire thing fell backwards on the cold marble floor. The ravenette felt her eyes widened slightly in awe at the display of prowess.

"Of course, when cast on immobile objects, the effects are not very visible," The Bulgarian man spoke up as he turned to face his student. "But when cast on living subjects, they become still and cannot move."

"But it doesn't eliminate their ability to think, hear or see," The young Heiress commented, eager to show her insight. "They are simply immobilised temporarily."

Mr Shevarshidze hummed with acknowledgement, obviously pleased that Regina was actively reading to prepare for their tutoring sessions and to understand the nature of spells.

"Very good. Full Body-Bind Curse can be released with General-Counter Spell, a charm you will learn at school, or an Anti-Paralysis Potion. For today, you practice the wand movement and incantation until the end of lesson."

"Yes sir."

The raven-haired Gryffindor now stood inside the Dart Arts Defence classroom, the benches rearranged beforehand to leave an open space in the middle for half a dozen mechanical dummies, and a cage with a rat trapped inside for the purpose of her training. Regina's stance did not conveyed any hesitance, only confidence as her aspen wand was raised and ready in a firm grip. Inhaling a deep calming breath, she repeated the incantation of the curse inside her mind and simultaneously in a whisper to ensure no unforgivable mistakes. She wasn't allowed to fail. Her brows were furrowed slightly as she closed her eyes and imagined enemies charging at her with weapons drawn, and Regina's eyelids flew open seconds later the same time she drew the hook with a downward slash in thin air.

"Petrificus Totalus!" She shouted clearly, tone assertive.

The young witch watched with accomplished satisfaction as the closest dummy to her fell with its limbs attached together, and proceeded to perform the same on the rest of the targets. Once all of them had been knocked over, Regina pointed her wand at where the rat was squeaking loudly inside its cage, and cast the spell once again. The animal immediately rolled to the side, stiff as a board.

Her lips curled into a victorious smirk as she withdrew at last.

𝕿hat day's tutoring session was different from what Regina was used to, as her oldest brother (and first Heir) Rupert was joining her and Mr Shervashidze for the first time. The ravenette was confused as to why, but her tutor had apparently already read her mind the moment she stepped into the study quarters.

"Your brother will help with the lesson today," The Bulgarian ex-Hit Wizard explained, looking as strict and professional as ever. "I teach you Revulsion Jinx on both animate and inanimate subjects. The young man is target practice."

Regina held back a wince at the rather questionable term, but the nonchalant smile and the shrug Rupert sent her way dispelled the uneasiness immediately.

"No offense taken, baby sister. I am happy to be able to assist."

"I am not a baby anymore," Regina grumbled. Mr Shervashidze loudly cleared his throat and gave her a look to indicate that the lesson had begun and for her to be serious.

"Right, let us start. Relashio is a powerful jinx that makes the target let go of whatever it is holding, no matter a living being or a non-living object. Sometimes it may be use to separate two people."

As he spoke, the older man walked to where Regina stood and turned to face her brother who proceeded to take out his wand and held it firmly in a tight grip as he moved into a duel position. She knew that it wasn't going to be him who would perform the spell however, as Rupert was still an underage wizard, so it must be her tutor who was going to cast the jinx as a demonstration.

Just as she thought, Dragomir Shervashidze raised his wand arm and began tracing and odd figure in the air. Her clever violet eyes followed his movement--up, to the side, and up again. The shape was smooth and not erratic, almost like a snake lying on its side. Regina believed the correct term was 'lateral recumbency'.

"Relashio!"

The girl watched with baited breath as a bright purple light shot out from her tutor's wand, landing instantly on her brother and making him drop his own weapon with a surprised grunt. It was an incredible prowess, and Regina idly wondered how much the impact would actually hurt if casted with vicious intent.

"Now, I show you how to use it on inanimate objects," Mr Shervashidze said. With a nonverbal spell, he summoned chains to wrap around Rupert, completely binding him. Then he repeated Revulsion Jinx incantation out loud for Regina's benefit. The light hit the chains and they immediately disentangled and fell into a heap on the floor.

"And that concludes the demonstration for today. You can practice the movement and incantation for the rest of the lesson. How are you intending to train at school?"

"It is a non-issue, sir," Regina replied. "I should be able to convince someone to help me like how my brother did today."

The man nodded approvingly.

"Very good."

"Thank you for accepting my request, Simon," The Gryffindor spoke to her Hufflepuff classmate as she got into position in the currently vacant DADA classroom. "I will be sure to return the favour whenever you need it."

Once Simon was ready with an armful of books, Regina took a deep breath and raised her black aspen wand, already citing the incantation under her breath to allow no mistakes. When she started feeling the magic at the tips of her fingers from drawing the snake-like shape, she took one step forward as a confident shout escaped her lips.

"Relashio!"

In an instant, the glowing purple light shot out and hit Simon dead-on. The books were released and dropped onto the ground in a loud clutter of noises. A winning smirk appeared on Regina's face as she resumed a normal standing position and walked towards her friend to check if he was alright.

"Allow me to treat you a butterbeer as a token of apology for using you as target practice after this."

Backdate flashback: August 2021

Regina already knew her new and last tutoring session of the summer was a particular one that day, judging by how they were standing on the vast green field of the seemingly infinite front gardens of the Miller Manor. She was even more eager to learn in such an open space - it meant that whatever spell her tutor was teaching was going to be very interesting.

"Today, you pay good attention," Mr. Shervashidze insisted. "We are in the gardens because I will teach you to summon snakes. Dangerous spell this is."

The young witch's interest was perked indeed. Coming from a long lineage of Slytherins, her family had always prided in their affinity with reptiles in both nature and magically conjured alike. Even though she ended up being more of a Lion then a Snake, Regina was still determined to master the spell impeccably, just like with everything else she did.

Her gaze was hyper-fixated on the Bulgarian as he raised his wand and drew a single vertical line as he articulated the incantation for the Snake Summons Spell in an assertive tone.

"Serpensortia!"

A blinding white light, and then a living snake shot out from the tip of Mr. Shervashidze's wand before landing softly on the green grass with a long hiss. Regina had a bewildered look on her face at how real the serpent was. Truly remarkable, it was.

"Easiest out of all animal conjuring spells. Now, if you want snake to disappear, you will use Snake-Vanishing Spell, and the movement is a little harder. Watch carefully," Her tutor instructed, drawing a strange shape in the air - a horizontal line from right to left, then a small loop with an upward curve at the end. "Vipera Evanesca!"

In a heap of black smoke, the slithering snake vanished instantly with an almost painful hiss. Already the raven-haired witch could think of all the possibilities she could do once she'd mastered such a powerful transfiguration spell.

"Thank you for your instructions, sir. I will not let you down," She said confidently.

"I doubt not you will," Mr. Shervashidze offered his young student a rare smile. "But don't use this spell for mischief or harm, now."

"Of course not, sir."

Present time. Perfectionist is in use.
Standing in the vacant DADA classroom, Regina took a deep breath and allowed her wand to slid from under her sleeve to the palm of her dominant hand. It was now or never - she must not allow herself to fail.

With an articulated 'Serpensortia!', the Lioness watched with disappointment at the first failed attempt when nothing happened. She tried again, a bit louder this time, and finally a snake was conjured from a familiar white light and fell to the ground. Regina was not intimidated, of course, but she'd never been as fond of reptiles as the rest of her siblings. She stared down at the hissing creature with apathy before waving her wand again in the movement of the other spell this time.

"Viperia Evanesca."

The instant disappearance of the snake seemed almost symbolic to Regina. It prompted her to imagine the vanishing of everything she was forced to represent - everything she despised.

If only there was a spell that could make it happen just like the serpent that had evaporated into the black smoke.

Seeing as Regina had not remained at the Miller Manor for the duration of summer, naturally she could not practice advanced spells with her Bulgarian tutor for this year. Instead, she had to make due with the DADA books she'd packed along with her to the Charlton Mansion where @Everly Charlton's - her cousin by marriage - family had so graciously taken her in for the month of July, and whatever book of hexes, jinxes and curses there was in the Charltons' library.

That day was one of those studious times where Regina had her nose glued to two particular spells which caught her interest - one of them might even prove to be very useful in the midst of a duel. And as a refined duellist, Regina would never pass up the chance to broaden the knowledge of spellwork if it meant ensuring an advantage over her opponents. She figured she should begin practising the Impediment Jinx, and what luck she had to be staying a Pureblood household where she could use her magic during the summer. Perhaps she could even show off in front of Everly afterwards, since the other girl was also in the Duelling Team.

Regina stood with her wand drawn, stepping out of the reading room and going up the stairs to reach the attic in search of a suitable target for practise. Soon enough, the opportunity represented itself in a form of eight legs crawling along the corner of the ceiling. The spider was at least four inches in length, but Regina had never been the type of girl to screech over dark hairy insects. She cradled the open book in her left hand with the specific page in view, and chanted the incantation repeatedly inside her mind to get it right as she drew a perfectly straight horizontal line in the air.

"Impedimenta."

As with all first attempts, a small light turquoise in colour appeared on the tip of her wand but sizzled out at the last minute. Regina's brows furrowed as she glanced at the book, repeated the same motion whilst casting a louder "Impedimenta!" this time. Finally, the light shot out and hit the spider dead-on, causing it to fall from the ceiling to the ground on its feet. Her eyes shone with smug satisfaction as she observed its abnormally slow movements, already flipping the pages to reveal the spell that would repel such large insects. Since she was dealing with a spider as a target, why not make use of the situation?

"Arania Exumai," Regina spoke after drawing the shape of the letter 'M' with anti-clockwise loop in the middle. A blue light - darker than the Impediment Jinx - blasted the spider backwards and behind one of the dusty trunks stored in the attic. She winced a bit at the black scorch mark left behind on the floor. That one should definitely not be recommended to use on humans.
