A height problem...
--- The Slytherin who became a Gryffindor ---
Backdate: Sunday, September 19th, 2021, directly after dinner.
It was Sunday night and Kim had just finished eating some delicious bacon and steak, along with some mashed potatoes. He'd finished his meal off with a custard tart and spent the next five minutes simply watching and listening to the other students around him. It didn't take him long to figure out what he wanted to do next. As he left the Great Hall, he overheard some students whispering about something fun to do. Kim subtly followed them and heard them talk about how they were going to sneak up to the Duelling Club somewhere on the 4th Floor.
Deciding to follow after them, albeit a distance away, Kim wondered what types of things he'd see up there. He hadn't had time to explore that floor yet, since there were no classes held there, and it was still early in the semester. That meant he hadn't been able to fully investigate all the places in the castle. However, luck was not with him, and the flights of stairs he'd been going up had changed beneath his feet and had promptly reversed his direction too. In the worst possible manner. Now, instead of going up the stairs, Kim was at the top of the stairs.
It wouldn't have been so bad if that was where it had ended.
But someone had either intentionally, or unintentionally cast an illusion on the stairs.
What Kim saw looking down the stairs was a huge drop that slowly became too far to see with the naked eye. It literally looked like death if you happened to fall down into the 'abyss'.
Such a thing would be scary to anyone. But for Kim it was worse. He'd always had a fear of heights for as long as he could remember. The reason? Well, he couldn't remember. Perhaps it was because his mind had blanked out the traumatic experience. There had to be one, right? No one was afraid of something for no reason. At first, Kim literally froze upon seeing the abyss in front of him. But then, he tried to calmly and rationally think things through. Someone would eventually come down the stairs or up the stairs, yes whichever one worked.
Students had been going up to sneak a peek at the Duelling Club, that's why he'd been going up in the first place. Or were they going to try it out themselves after hours? Whatever it was didn't matter. So, of course they would come back to the staircase again. And then, Kim could see whether or not this huge gap was an illusion or not. Even if it was an illusion, he didn't think he could handle it, not without his eyes closed. But he didn't want to trust on his senses to go in the right direction, what if the stairs changed again and he ended up somewhere else?
No, he needed someone to help him across the illusion, if that was truly what it was.
If he had someone like that, he could close his eyes and not have to deal with it, while letting whoever it was help him across. It was the best plan he could come up with at the time.
But then his heart sunk. What if this staircase wasn't the one leading up to the Duelling Club? What if it had put him somewhere else? Somewhere no one would come across until tomorrow morning when everyone woke up for classes. Kim gnawed on his bottom lip, feeling his heart beating wildly as he tried to look anywhere but down. The only thing he could do was wait for someone to hopefully come along tonight. If worst came to worst, he'd go down tomorrow morning when one of the students came down the stairs. So, where exactly was he?
It wasn't bad when he wasn't looking down. But it wasn't like he could cross that vast expanse by not looking down. The gap was too wide to not see what lay beneath it, even when you were right at the edge. And human nature had a tendency to look at things you shouldn't look at, it was something out of a person's control. But maybe he could go up further, perhaps that was his escape route. Kim turned around and headed up the stairs until he reached a door. He turned the knob but the door was locked and he wasn't the kind of person who could picklock.
Nor did he know the spell to unlock doors.
Hell, he was stuck. He couldn't go forward but he couldn't go backward either. This damned castle and its changing staircases. Sometimes he liked it and sometimes he hated it.
This was one of the times he hated it.
How was he going to get back to his dorm? Maybe one of the patrols would pick him up before morning, but at the same time he really didn't want that to happen. The last thing he wanted was to lose Gryffindor House points, especially since they didn't seem to be doing too well lately. Ravenclaw had been dominating lately out of nowhere. Kim headed back down the stairs again and came to a halt a few inches away from the apparent ledge. Standing there made him feel like an idiot and also didn't help his nerves. So, Kim sat down, and waited a bit.
After awhile, he got really bored and reached into his pocket to produce a piece of parchment paper. Thankfully, he carried them around on his person all the time, along with a special quill. This quill had been a gift from his parents and was known as a self-inking quill. Kim stretched the parchment out onto the floor and closed his eyes. A few seconds later, he placed the quill to the paper and started to scribble something onto it. If he was going to be stuck here for whoever knew how long, he might as well make use of that time. Make the best of it.

𝕯espite the precarious situation Regina and her family had endured right before last summer that resulted in her leaving Hogwarts for almost a year, the youngest Miller Heiress was somewhat pleased that this time she'd managed to settle in for her second year without a hitch. The first few weeks of the first term was sailing smoothly so far, despite her parents' initial concern over her safety within the caste after the infamous S.C.A.R Attack against Gryffindor students back in January 2021. The school's illusion of being the most secure place for magical pupils had doubtlessly wavered--if it hadn't already after the notorious Battle of Hogwarts during the late 1990's. Pureblood guardians were now questioning whether or not it was wise anymore to send their children back here with everything that was going on within these walls, when it seemed to attract disasters one after another in succession. However, Regina had convinced her parents that she was skilled enough in both brains and brawn to remain unharmed and away from danger should any occur. They still instructed her to be ever vigilant and to immediately seek out her older siblings when trouble arose.
It was with this mindset that the Heiress did not tend to wander after dinner hours. Unlike her boisterous and energetic Housemates, Regina preferred to retreat to the welcoming space of her dormitory and spend the evening reading her textbooks in advance until it was time for bed. There was also the matter of being caught dawdling about before curfew, and since the Miller patriarch was always so exigent about keeping up public images, Regina wanted not to have a fault associated with her name and person. Her Father's patience was already on thin ice during the summer because of the murder convictions and trials, and she dared not give him a reason for his anger to implode because of her. Already Regina could hear other Pureblood Heirs whispering rumours that had been circulating since the beginning of the month when she passed nearby, and she barely held back the urge to brandish her wand in their faces to silence their silly little scuttlebutts concerning her family. Instead, Regina kept a stoic face as she ascended the ever moving staircases of Hogwarts, uncaring of the wary glances shot her way. She wanted nothing more than to reach the safety of the Gryffindor Tower at that moment.
The raven-haired aristocrat slowed in her steps when she arrived on the second level, orchid purple eyes keenly spotting a figure sitting on what seemed to be a ledge in the stairs. From afar, she couldn't exactly discern the appearance of the person, other than the fact that they seemed to be of tall stature, and their hair was as white as the snow during Yule. The figure was slightly hunched over, as though they were brooding--or were they reading something? Regina's elegant brows furrowed the closer she approached the person, and immediately saw what was undoubtedly parchment and and quill held in their hands. She wasn't the one to question other people's quirky behaviours, but there was surely something to be said about sitting in the middle of a staircase to write...whatever it was that they were writing. For one, the setting was preposterous--there was no one able to maintain a perfect posture to write properly in a place like this. Regina knew that her preceptor, who had always ingrained endless lectures of 'the importance of having an impeccable stance' into her mind, would scream bloody murder if she was ever to found in such position.
The longer Regina silently assessed the boy--she'd come to the conclusion that the presence was male upon watching at a small distance--the more she took note of his striking appearance and realised that she didn't recognised him as anyone from her year. Regina didn't know every single student who was a peer, but she could generally acknowledge the faces that she shared classes with. The boy didn't look like a Half-blood or a Muggleborn from what she could decipher, as he seemed quite at ease with the magical setting and using a self-inking quill (she didn't see any inkwell near him, so it must be self-inking). Most of the time she could tell straight away which person belonged to which blood status by their mannerisms and the way they dressed and held themselves, but there was still a chance she could be mistaken, and the boy was either of those lesser bloodlines. Or, Morganna forbid, a Half-breed. Merlin knew subject of Half-breeds were controversial enough on The Daily Prophet after S.C.A.R. Hogwarts housing Half-breed students was also strongly discuss among those articles, and Regina felt her fingers itching to wrap around her aspen wand that was tucked underneath her right sleeve and ready to slide down into her palm with an inconspicuous flick of her wrist.
It seemed that the ravenette's curiosity won over her awareness however, and Regina heard the words tumbling from her lips before she could stop them.
"You are just two seconds away from falling from the ledge. Why indulge yourself in such a precarious situation?"
Regina's purple eyes were almost eerily intense in the way she gazed at the boy from below her nose while standing behind him, almost like a snake observing something of interest. Her posture was straight and open, giving a false sense of security as she awaited a response. Until the person interact with her, she could not discern predator or prey--whether or not she should align with this person and help them, or to walk away and never cross paths again.

Thankfully, Kim's idea to immerse himself in writing lyrics to a potential song was successfully distracting him from his current height predicament.
By the time the stranger appeared, Kim had come up with four lines that he liked and intended on keeping for the song. It was only when the raven haired girl spoke to him that Kim realized someone was there. He quickly looked up, strands of white hair falling into his eyes. The boy raised a hand and ran it through his hair, sweeping the unruly strands away, so he could see whoever it was that had come to his aid. She was a girl.
A girl with dark hair.
She looked slightly older than him, although appearances could be deceiving.
Kim swiftly became aware of his situation and how it looked and scrambled to his feet, trying not to look down at the illusion of an endless pit before him. He cleared his throat and looked out across the chasm towards the girl. Yes, that was right. Don't look down, look at her and you'll be fine. Kim thought quickly to himself, trying to regain control of his emotions. As soon as he'd stood, he became a bit more confident.
His posture instinctively straightened and his aura seemed to become stronger as a result. Those intense purple eyes were quite striking and Kim had to admit, he was kind of fascinated by them. As it had only been a little over two weeks since he'd first come to Hogwarts, he still hadn't met everyone attending the school as of yet. She didn't look familiar, which meant this girl definitely wasn't one of the new First Years....
That in turn meant she was one of the higher years.
Or a transfer student, although normally there would have been an announcement.
So he was going with the former. From what she'd said to him, it didn't seem as if she was a prefect and she was dressed in everyday clothes rather than the school uniform.
Therefore, he couldn't tell what House she was from. It was probably fine to see if she could help him, without risking getting into trouble. "Apologies. I didn't mean to get in your way up the stairs. I was heading up to Gryffindor Tower but the staircase changed on me and put me somewhere different. And then this illusion happened..." Kim said, waving his hand downward without looking down...
Ah that reminded him, he was still holding his self-inking quill and the piece of parchment paper. He quickly put the quill away into his robe and folded the paper, putting it into a different pocket. Returning his attention to the girl before him again, Kim made a face. He didn't want to ask this but he had no choice in the matter, not when it came to heights. "Forgive me, but would you be able to help me out?"
Ugh, he didn't like this.
Asking someone for help was not his thing to do. But this time he had to.
It wasn't as if he could do this on his own. "Can you help me find the staircase to the 5th floor again and get me away from this illusion?" Kim asked.

𝕳er eyebrow quirked when the boy explained his peculiar predicament, her gaze flickering momentarily down towards the 'chasm' he was gesturing at. Regina's blank expression might gave the impression that she was indifferent to the situation, but she was more curious than anything. This person claimed to be heading to Gryffindor Tower, so that meant he was her Housemate, since the only plausible reason would be retreating to their common room when curfew approached.Interacting with @Kim Sato

Should a Lion even be this frightened by a mere illusion? Regina supposed not all Gryffindors had nothing to fear, after all.
The boy was in luck as the ravenette was feeling exceptionally charitable that day, even though she was normally distrustful towards strangers. Furthermore, since he was her underclassman, it should be a noble act to lend a helping hand as his senior. Regina stared silently at him for a few more moments before finally moving, walking right onto the invisible platform whilst keeping eye contact, completely unfazed.
"Coincidentally, I am going to the Tower as well. It is fortunate for you that I have decided to approach you rather than continuing on my way."
Once she was directly in front of the younger male, the Heiress could finally see his features up close and was surprised that he was much taller than average first-years. She had to tilt her head back a little to look at him properly, and there was something familiar about him. Regina didn't tend to remember anybody who wasn't worth her attention, but she never forgot a face she'd personally met before during gatherings within the Pureblood community, even as a small child. Perhaps she would recognise him if she knew his name.
Regina extended her hand.
"The staircase to the fifth floor is in the opposite direction," She told him. "Hold onto my hand and I shall help you cross. I do not wish to be caught loitering here after curfew however, so quickly make a decision and do not waste my time."
Personally, the ravenette was extremely averse to any form of physical contact, especially to those she'd never interacted with before. But it was an exceptional case, and if this boy did end up being the son of the Pureblood family, then it would be beneficial for Regina to leave a good impression. She would have to refrain from flinching as a reflex though, but since it was her who initiated the contact, everything should be fine.

Kim was not the sort to ask for help from anyone.
But this was an emergency.
He couldn't not ask for help when help was literally only a few inches away from him.
And his predicament had to do with heights, the one thing he truly couldn't handle. Well, other than his severe social anxiety, but at least with that he could force himself to endure.
Heights on the other hand, Kim didn't think he could manage to handle even for a few seconds. That was how bad it was. As the purple eyed girl began to move forward, Kim was grateful that she appeared as if she was going to lend him a hand with this issue. He didn't look down at the illusion as the girl stepped right on top of it and kept on going, without even pausing to consider the ramifications. That is, if the illusion had not been an illusion at all.
Then she was standing right beside him. Her words made him smirk a little bit. "Yes, I do find it fortunate." Kim remarked, feeling more at ease. Knowing that someone was going to help him made everything better. He reached out and grasped her hand with his own and closed his eyes to avoid having a mini meltdown upon accidentally catching sight of the chasm. The chasm that wasn't actually there. Who had come up with such a horrible prank?
Once the girl had helped him across, Kim let his eyes flicker over her again.
She looked familiar.
But he couldn't quite place her face. "Do I know you?" Kim asked, curious. "What's your name?" He added. Maybe he'd recognize her name at least.

Regina gave the boy a cryptic glance at his question when they finally arrived to the other side of the invisible platform and turned around to fully face him.Interacting with @Kim Sato
Colour code - #831100
"My name is Regina Miller, youngest Pureblood Heir of four," She answered. "Now that you mentioned it, I do notice something familiar about you."
The raven-haired witch tilted her head slightly to the side as her elegant eyebrows furrowed - a sign which typically indicated she was in deep thought. In reality, Regina was searching the deepest corners in her memory to put a name to this face in front of her. Clever purple eyes scanned everything from her underclassman's features and the more she looked, the more she noted distinct facial traits that separated him from everybody else - he was not of European ethnic. His English might be natively fluent, but those eyes, that nose, those cheekbones...they didn't resemble any other British traits Regina was used to. Which meant the boy belonged to a foreign family, most likely Asian, and there was only one possibility she could come up with.
The Noble House of Miller were influential and had a lot of connections, but it was rare that those expanded beyond the continent. However, Regina remembered that her Father was on very good terms with a certain Pureblood wizard of Asian descent. She recalled him mentioning they had been Housemates during their Hogwarts years, two astounding Slytherins who both got married to Gryffindor witches after graduation. When Regina was still a toddler, that other family used to visit the Miller Manor quite often and vice versa. There was always another child there whom the Asian couple always brought with them, and who Regina believed she might have gotten along well with. It was so long ago that she wasn't certain if this was the same person...that other child in her early childhood memories had been small and meek, with jet black hair.
"Are your parents perhaps...the Satos?" Regina inquired tentatively. "My parents only ever mentioned having them as their only foreign acquaintances, and I know they have a son who used to be my playmate."

ㅤ──────────────────────| ── | Regina gave her name. That was when all the pieces came together for him. Kim's eyes widened a little. "Ah!! Gia!" He exclaimed, using the nickname he'd called her when they were much younger. She'd called him 'Kiki' and he'd called her 'Gia'. He'd used the last couple of letters of her first name and Regina had used the first few letters of his first name. A smile came to his lips, a rare genuine one. When Regina spoke again, she asked if his parents were the Satos and he nodded. "You remember me. I remember you!" Kim said and let his eyes flicker over the girl before him. She was older than him but he'd already known that fact. Both back in the past and present time. "I didn't recognize you until now. You've grown up really well and become quite beautiful." Kim remarked. "To think, we're both in the same House too." He added, marveling at how life tended to throw people who knew eachother together all the time. Perhaps this was why he'd been sorted into Gryffindor. To be reunited with Regina again. "How have you been? The last time I saw you was back when we were kids." Kim said. Yes, they were still kids now but back then they'd been much younger. It was so nice to see a familiar face. One that hadn't betrayed him, which was rare to find for him. Regina had been an exception for him. ────────────────────── ㅤ ㅤ──────────────────────

There was an almost melancholic expression on her face as Regina's eyes finally shone recognition to the younger boy standing in front of her. Yes, she only knew of one person who called her by that name, and it was her childhood playmate who would always follow her around the Miller Manor like a little baby duck. She had been young, and not yet subjected to the terrible treatment her parents would impose on her later in life...Regina had been happy to have Kim like a surrogate a younger brother to her because she was the littlest of the Miller Heirs. She had still been...innocent, then.
And when her magic first manifested at the age of six, that was when they stopped seeing each other.
Regina's parents had wanted to mold her into the perfect Pureblood Heir, and that meant eliminating any possible external influence - thus forcing her to focus only on countless lessons from her preceptor and banishing any unnecessary emotional attachments. She hadn't ever seen Kim again until now. Fate was truly funny like that, giving her a first friend and brutally taking him away only to push them back together after Regina had become a jaded and cynical person, nothing like the bright and happy toddler she used to be.
"It is good to see you again, Kiki," She offered the barest of smiles. Which was quite a feat in itself, because nowadays she didn't really do that anymore. "I suppose we had always have a lot in common to be sorted into Gryffindor. You have grown quite a lot, you have."
Her lips instantly pressed into a neutral, thin line when he inquired about how she was fairing. Even though she knew Kim was trustworthy enough as a person...Regina had changed drastically. She wasn't sure what her friend would think of her now if he knew all the things she'd been through and what had shaped her into a cold, apathetic young witch. It was incredibly taboo to speak of a scandalous home life within the Pureblood community. It was better to keep him in the dark about certain things, she concluded.
It wasn't because she didn't trust Kim. It was just...nobody would understand. And Regina didn't like the idea of opening up about her trauma.
"I have been well. Nothing too exciting is going on at the moment, but you never know with Hogwarts," She answered.
Then she lifted her head as though she was scouting the surroundings, and looked back at Kim.
"We must leave now if we are to make it to the Gryffindor Tower in time for curfew. Come, I will show you the way so your little problem will not happen again. We may catch up along the way."
With that, Regina turned on her heels and beckoned him slightly to follow her with a glance over her shoulder before leaving the premises. She was glad to have seen a familiar face.

It didn't seem as if she was doing well at all, judging from her initial reaction to his words and Kim's brow furrowed. But he didn't say anything because if she didn't want to talk about it right now, he wouldn't press it. Eventually, yes he did want to know, but there was a time for everything and he could wait. "Mm." Kim didn't say much other than that one particular sound. "Even though it's been awhile, we'll have to get up to date again." He told her and nodded when she mentioned they needed to get up to Gryffindor Tower before curfew struck. Regina even reassured him that she would be with him, in case the unexpected happened a second time. You never really knew. Not when it came to Hogwarts. After all, just as she'd stated before, there was no telling what things the castle would throw in their direction. "It's like fate, isn't it?" Kim said with a smile again, a rare one, as he didn't tend to smile often. Not genuine ones. As they came to a halt outside of Gryffindor Tower, Kim turned towards Regina again. "If you ever need any help or someone to talk to, send me an owl and I'll be there for you. It doesn't matter what time it is." He reassured her and inclined his head towards her. "Zàijiàn!" Kim told his girl friend. Or perhaps he should refer to her as his childhood friend. He raised his hand to his temple and made a sideways peace sign before turning to climb through the portrait. The Mandarin word he'd used before was the word for 'goodbye' and since Kim had been studying Mandarin for the past few months, it was something that had stuck with him for awhile. ────────────────────── ㅤ ㅤ──────────────────────
