This was probably one of the best and worst days in Lucie's life.

For some reason, Lucie's parents had some strange aversion to vacations. In the past nine years, the Mahler family had gone on exactly zero vacations. Lucie had never seen any place outside of the lovely neighborhood they lived in. Which, as it turned out, didn't bother Lucie at all. She didn't mind sticking to the little place her parents were so insistent she stayed in, where she was comfortable. The idea of going somewhere unknown terrified her. She preferred to linger in places she was familiar with.

Her brother Leon, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. He loved the idea of going somewhere new every other week. Their parents' rebuttal did nothing to discourage him, however, and for many, many years, the Mahlers had to brave Leon's burning question for a very long time - can we go on a vacation, pretty please?

As it turned out, even Lucie's parents had a breaking point. Finally, they'd caved, and after hearing that they would be going to Washington (the state, not the country capital), Leon had run around their house five times while screaming at the top of his lungs, exuberant. (It was not very pleasant.)

Lucie, for her part, didn't mind it. She still felt uneasy about the prospect of going to an entirely new place, but at least her entire family was there to make sure she was entirely a-okay. It's not that she would get lost in a completely unknown state, right?

Lucie was also, on the contrary, lost.

She tapped her phone lightly, wincing at the brightness as it blinked to life, hurriedly turning it down. She rarely used it unless she needed to, and now counted as one of those times. Lucie had been left stranded, with the rest of the Mahlers nowhere in sight and no idea how to find her way back to them. Lucie squinted at the screen, tapping on her mother's icon and typing into the box quickly: 'help im lsot find me'. Hopefully, her mother found that readable.

Otherwise, Lucie had no idea what to do. Talking to people she didn't know was scary, so that was a no-no. (Well, at least for now. She wasn't that desperate yet.) Lucie dipped her head, diverting her eyes towards the phone, and tapped on the Calculator icon.

Miles Thatcher, my iNPC coming upon @Everly Charlton's iNPC, Lucie Mahler

Miles Thatcher was a boy of the world. While he was currently only nine years old, he had already been to six of the seven continents of the world; leaving only Antarctica behind. Still, set in the farthest northwest corner of the United States, he would find one of his favorite locations on earth: Olympic National Park in his home state of Washington.

There he could find moss-covered forests, mountaintop vistas, meadows bursting with wildflowers, multiple waterfalls, flowing rivers, gorgeous valleys, deep blue lakes, native wildlife, resplendent coastal beaches, and soak up all that nature provided - including a temperate rainforest!

On peaceful days when he really just wanted to hike, Miles would take off to Hurricane Ridge, where he would be able to take in panoramic views of the Olympic mountain range, thirsting to see snow-capped mountains and forests of evergreens along with Mount Olympus. Sometimes the nomajes (non-magical folk) would drive their cars up to get to such a destination but Miles would find the breathtaking view by hiking the Klahhane Ridge Trail.

Should a nine year old boy be wandering such an expansive area of land all by himself? Most likely not, but again, such was the life of Miles Thatcher. He had two parents - both a mother and a father - but to say they actually parented him was debatable. He was free to seek out his own adventures.

Miles came upon the girl, seeing her stare down at one of her technological devices and he shook his head. It seemed every nomaj was always wrapped up in something, their head down instead up to see the world. They really needed to look up a little more. Didn't she see it?

He stepped closer toward her. Slowly. "Don't move," he said sharply. "Seriously, not one movement. You'll hurt it." He wasn't so impressed with this girl right now. Miles came over to where she was and glared down at her. "Move some to your left," and having realized how snappy he was being, he did soften a little. "Just a little, please. you're nearly trampling the Northern Wormwood, also known as Artemisia Campestris. It's a Critically Imperiled Plant!"

Everything was going great so far. Somehow, Lucie had gotten herself in this situation, so she had to fix it. Somehow. Lucie swallowed nervously as she rocked back and forth, up and down. It did little to soothe her, but at least the motion helped distract her as she watched the top of her screen like a hawk, pressing random buttons on the calculator. She ended up with a nice little 35,938 glaring up at her when a little ding signaled to her that her mother had responded.

Lucie stared intently at the phone screen as she scanned the message. It conveyed her mother’s bemusement and slight frustration, as well as contained the address of where the rest of her family was. Lucie let out a small sigh as she opened up the Maps app by tapping the icon, starting to enter in the digits she’d been given.

Approaching footsteps startled her. She looked up to see a boy nearing that seemed about her age, a determined expression on his face. Lucie watched him curiously, switching the phone off as he got closer.

At his hissed order, Lucie froze. She was stepping on something? Even worse, it was something that seemed extremely important to him. She slipped the phone back into her bag, shuffling stiffly in the direction he’d instructed her to. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know that-” she began, but thought better of it, opting to just move instead. Her arms were glued to her side as she did, wide eyes trailed his face, watching for any other sign that he was angry at her.

Once she’d deemed herself out of the danger zone, she cleared her throat quietly, eyes darting over the spot she’d been standing in for the plant the boy had been talking about. Lucie had never been the best at recognizing plants - that was Finn’s talent, after all - so she realized quickly that she had no idea what the plant was. “What’s a… Art- art-em-is-ee-a Camp-es-tris?” she asked, struggling with the name pronunciation.

A young Miles meeting a young Lucie, @Everly Charlton

"Artemisia Campestris," he repeated. "Also known as Field Sagewort. Field sagewort's taxonomy is complex, and the recognition of subspecies and varieties is inconsistent but that certainly is what it is, at least a type of it. Artemisia campestris subsp. borealis var.wormskioldii is rare in Washington. Very rare. And Critically Imperiled," as he had previously stated.

He came over to where the girl was and bent down to survey the plant. The stem and the leaves and even the flowers all seemed unharmed and he felt he could breath a little easier. "Artemisia campestris has many medicinal actions, including: antivenom, anticancer, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anthelmintic, antimicrobial, antifungal, and has been utilized in treating many conditions, including: digestive, respiratory, cutaneous and genital diseases. Snagglewogs also use it as one of their primary food sources."

Brushing his hands around the nearby terrain, he noticed some seeds that the plant had dropped. What luck! He quickly (yet gently) picked them up and looked surveyed the area a moment. It was a touch shadier just a few paces to the North so he took a few steps forward and began to dig with his hands. All he needed was just a small hole and he dug a few out, placing one seed in each before bringing some of the earth back onto them. Miles smiled and looked back to the girl. This was actually quite the discovery!

"I'm Miles! Miles Thatcher," he said as he walked over to where she was. "What were you doing looking at that metal box?" Miles didn't meet too many kids outside of his pureblooded neighborhood or when not at one of his parents' functions. They tended to stay in the same sort of circle so he was a little awkward introducing himself to someone new.

roleplaying as lucietta mahler

Though Lucietta knew far less about Washington's plants than the other boy did, she still listened intently to his explanation. The Mahlers had a small garden in their backyard, just like everyone else that lived in their neighborhood. Lucietta had attempted to bring the small plants in it back to life many times before but found limited success each time. The numerous video tutorials and blogs she'd read could speak for themselves. Perhaps she just wasn't much of a gardener. Her school did have a gardening club, though—would that be able to nudge her in the right direction? She considered it briefly and decided she'd look into it later. She kept several succulents in her room, though, and adorned the walls with fake plants, which were a lot less troubling to take care of. Would window plants be easy enough to take care of?

With a start, she realized she hadn't been paying attention. Fortunately, the poor plant didn't seem too harmed. She let out a little breath that she didn't know she'd been holding. "Oh, thank goodness," she said, watching him examine the plants and collect a few seeds, before taking some steps and dropping each one into small holes he'd dug, covering them up again. "What are you doing?" she asked curiously. She could assume he'd been planting some seeds, but why had he moved areas? A little more information never hurt anyone, and Lucietta could certainly use some.

Miles, she noted, was his name. "Lucietta. Call me Lucie, though." she smiled at him, before looking back down at her phone. It was an old model, and it'd been her dad's old one, but her parents had given it to her with the instructions to carry it with her at all times and to use it in case she was ever lost or needed her parents. Most of the other kids at school had them, albeit newer models, and it was a little surprising to hear that Miles didn't know what it was. "Uh... it's a phone! You can use it to, like, call, or text people. And you can, uh, play games on it or stuff." She supposed some kids were just really sheltered. "Does your family have a, um, tv? Or, like..."

Miles Thatcher talking with Lucie Mahler, @Everly Charlton

"They really risk something growing out in the direct sun like that one," he said to the plant she nearly destroyed," and it's too close to the trail. I'm planting these seeds a little further back and under the shade here. It'll be a more conducive growing environment and yield the best success," he said as he finished and brushed off his hands before returning over to where she was, giving a final brush off on his pants. He never minded getting a little dirty when it came to nature, but at the same time he didn't want to be filthy ever. It was quite a fine balance.

Miles took a seat next to her and looked over at the rectangle in her hand. She had told him what it did, but he still was pretty confused. Call? Text? Play games? TV. He had heard of those. They were boxes with moving pictures on them and told a story - much like going to a live performance of a play but without the live performance experience. "Right," he said, trying to deter the conversation to look like he knew exactly what it was. Honestly, he had seen others, mostly grown ups, walking around in some of the cities with them - memorized with them, but he hadn't seen one so up close.

"Nana's got herself a greenhouse and I spend a lot of time there. A big garden, too! At my house there's a really big library that's just off from my father's study. It's always expanding so when new books or research comes out, it goes out on order and we get a copy and add to it!"
No, no mention of tv. That would be quite difficult as they didn't even have electricity. It would interfere with the magic and all.
