Exploring the castle was quite a lot of fun, especially when you were a First Year that had never been there before. Sure, he'd been on the grounds at Hogwarts before now but never inside the place. There were so many twists and turns and magical happenings that diverted your path on a regular basis. Part of him liked that but another part was somewhat annoyed by it too. Kim wasn't entirely sure what he was going to do today, as he had no plans, but then again he rarely made plans. His plans tended to be more spontaneous things.

That is, when it came to personal plans.

He yawned and tilted his head to the side, which resulted in a cracking sound.
Maybe he'd head out and sketch some things.

It was a spontaneous plan but those were the best kind and what he excelled at. Grabbing his satchel, he stuffed some quills, ink and parchment paper into it and headed out of the dorms. Once outside, Kim looked around for something interesting to draw.

He needed a source of inspiration.

Within a few minutes, he found it. The actual school courtyard with the fountain.

It was located between one wall of the castle and three open hallways and almost looked like a sort of oasis in a desert region. The fountain was dry and seemed as if it had long been abandoned of its precious water but Kim could sketch some water into his work. An idle thought came to mind, what if he could learn a spell to make a spurt of water come out of it? He made a mental note to see if that would be possible later on. Kim made his way towards the fountain and took a seat on the benches nearby. He took out a piece of parchment paper.

A drawing board, quill and ink were also removed from his satchel and set down beside him.

Thankfully, there didn't seem to be many people around at the moment.

Kim fixed the parchment to the board and picked up the quill to look over at the fountain. He dipped the quill into the ink and started to move it over the paper. However, soon after having done a few lines, his brow furrowed upon realizing that his hand was getting rather sticky.

That was a bit strange to him. Kim knew he'd washed his hands when he'd gotten up in the morning and had even splashed his face with water too. He hadn't had breakfast or anything to eat or drink either. So what could be the reason for this stickiness? It was only when he examined his quill more closely that his lips parted a bit. Kim couldn't believe what he'd done. Well, that's what he got for not paying much attention to what he was shoving into his satchel.

He really wasn't a morning owl.

The tall Gryffindor boy shook his head and set the Sugar Quill down.

"Dāngrán zhè jiùshì wǒde shǒu hěn zhān de yuányīn, nà shì yī gēn táng yǔmáo bǐ." The only consolation was that no one was there to witness his idiotic action.

Or so he thought.
Translation: Of course that's why my hand was sticky, it's a Sugar Quill.

It was still a bit surreal. She was here, the one and only Hogwarts. It was truly amazing. But, the homework? Not so much.

Vienna groaned, finally finishing her last piece of homework. She had quite the bad habit of procrastinating, but today, Sunday, the last day before the students went back to class, she had finally finished. She frowned. What now? She opened the window of her dorm, peering outside. Cloudy. A bit sad if she was gonna be honest. But at least nobody wanted to be outside in sad weather. Vienna grinned. The perfect excuse to explore with no obstacles, and nobody to catch her if she happened to find an interesting area that she wasn't exactly supposed to be in.

She stretched, yawning as she made her way outside to the courtyard. It was a bit early as well, so her assumptions of the lack of people wandering around at the time were correct. She reached the courtyard, taking a breath of the refreshing, chilly air. She peered around at her surroundings, stepping onto the long dried out fountain, balancing on the edge. Usually the courtyard was bustling with life, so it was quite refreshing getting to enjoy the area alone.

Or, she thought she was alone.

She heard a soft wooden thud, barely audible. Almost like the sound of something being set down. Vienna frowned, raising an eyebrow as she peeked behind the fountain, her hands resting gently on one of the pillars she she hid behind it. She squinted, her eyes falling upon on a young boy. He looked about Vienna's age, a first year. In his hands was a quill and a piece of parchment. But something was off about the quill. She squinted, taking a closer look before letting out a quiet giggle.

The boy seemed to notice his mistake, muttering something in a language Vienna didn't understand. She inched closer.

"I don't think that's the right type of quill. It's a bit too appetizing to write anything," she blurted with a grin, coming out from her hiding spot. "Are you writing something? Or drawing?"

A sigh escaped him as he stared down at the sugar quill whose end had been dipped in ink. Well, he certainly wouldn't be eating that particular part of the treat now. Even if he wiped it off, there might still be the faint taste of ink. And that wasn't a very nice taste to have in your mouth, at least not to him. It was around this time that he suddenly heard a girl's voice, it sounded as if she was really close. But he'd been alone, hadn't he? How could she have snuck up on him out of nowhere? Kim looked up and confirmed someone was standing right there.

It took him a few seconds to realize what she'd said and then he made a face.

So, she'd witnessed it.

Of course she had. Kim's mind raced, trying to come up with an explanation. One that made sense and wouldn't paint him as idiotic by nature.

Yeah he had nothing concrete. Might as well try for something spontaneous. "Oh, I don't know. Sugar Quills can be very useful when you've forgotten your real quills. As long as you have ink, they can write just fine for a time." Kim said, trying to act as if his blunder had been nothing special and that this kind of thing could happen to anyone all the time. Honestly it probably had, especially when it came to First Years. But for him, it wouldn't have happened if he'd been wide awake at the time. He looked over at the Slytherin.

She seemed like a First Year too. When she asked if he was writing or drawing something, Kim looked down at his paper. "Well, it's not much of anything right now. But I was working on a sketch." He told her and then had a great idea. "Hey, mind if you take a seat in front of the fountain?" Having a person there would be great for his work. Even if she was only there for a short time, as long as he got the general outline of the girl he could continue even if she had to leave. "Take a seat to the left, it'll look better." Kim added.

Vienna shrugged. "Sure. You have a point. But ink isn't a pleasant taste to have in your mouth, so it's honestly just a waste. Perhaps sticking to the right type of quill is the best option," she grinned, finding the boy's attempt to justify himself amusing.

"Oh, well, everything starts somewhere," she said, rocking back and forth on her feet as the boy answered her question about his intentions with the paper. But to say she was caught off-guard by his request was an understatement. "Oh, er, sure?" She straightened, making her way over to the fountain. "I do admit, I don't have that much experience with modeling or anything," she joked as she sat down. She didn't have much to do anyway. Except explore, but it could wait.

"So, it's safe to assume you're sketching the fountain now, right?" She inquired, scooting to the left as the boy pointed it out. It was kind of a dumb question, but she liked talking, plus sitting in silence wasn't the most fun thing to do, especially around a stranger. And she just liked knowing things. "You know, I'm kinda an artist myself," she rambled on as she stared into the distance. "More of a doodler honestly. I'm not one to do realistic scenes and such. They're a lot harder. That's why it's cool though," she said as she leaned forward, her statements clearly directed at him.

"Oh, sorry. I'm supposed to be sitting still, aren't I? Again, not very good at this modeling thing," she said as she leaned back. "Hey, what's your name anyway? I wanna know whose amazing sketch I'm going to be featured in," she grinned.

The girl's response made Kim close his eyes for a brief millisecond, before he tilted his head upward and gave her what could only be construed as a 'smile'. "Of course. Yes, I agree with you." Kim said and was pleasantly surprised when the Slytherin instantly agreed to do what he'd asked of her. You never knew how someone would react to a rather odd request, so it was always nice when they agreed to do so without question. He let his eyes linger on her.

Yes. She would do nicely.

Kim put down the Sugar Quill and rummaged through his satchel to find an actual quill.

He didn't want to use his SQ aka Special Quill, because that was reserved only for emergencies. If he'd intended to use his SQ he wouldn't have brought other quills with him.

Upon finding what he'd been looking for, Kim dipped the end of the quill into the small ink well and started to sketch the girl's outline onto his paper. First he drew her basic shape and then added her chest length curly hair to her form. It was looking pretty good. He tended to draw basic outlines pretty fast and would add details from his memory if the subject left the area before he was done. A lot of his drawings were like this, it was a common occurrence.

It was rare that he drew someone who didn't move, as they didn't tend to be his models.

The girl's round glasses were next to be drawn.

That was when she said something to him and Kim looked up from his sketch to process what she'd said before. Ah, yes. "Yes. I came out to find a source of inspiration and this area happened to strike my interest. And now you." Kim told her matter-of-factly, as if he hadn't just said something that could be construed in another way. Most of the Slytherin's words were simply small talk, the type of thing Kim usually disliked engaging in.

But he didn't mind listening to it, in fact it provided a sort of soothing background of white noise. However, despite this, he was still able to pick up on any important information tidbits. The sketch was turning out nicely, as by now the person taking shape in his picture was starting to resemble his model. Kim blinked when she spoke again, this time picking out her next words as being actual questions he could respond to. "Kim." He said with a nod.

What was her name?

He was curious as to whether the name would fit the face.

There was no need to ask though, most people would usually introduce themselves when asking for someone else's name. Kim looked down at his sketch again.

"Also, it doesn't matter if you move or not, I'm used to people coming and going while I sketch." He told her and then regretted doing so. Damn, he could have messed with her a little. But it was too early on a cloudy morning for his brain to be at 100%. He should have gotten up an hour earlier to snag breakfast and wake his mind up before coming out here. Speaking of which, Kim stifled a yawn that threatened to escape his mouth. Yup. Tired.

A grin found its way to her lips when the boy responded with his name. It usually took a bit of time for people to tell their names to Vienna. Her cousin always said it was because she looked annoying. And untrustworthy. It wasn't really true, but she did have to admit she wasn't the best at keeping secrets. But she really couldn't help it, she had trouble keeping things in. She just liked talking. Perhaps today her drowsiness helped lower her 'annoying-ness' levels.

Kim Sato. She made a mental note, trying her best to keep the name in her mind. She wasn't the best at memorizing things, for her brain was much too busy to remember such small details such as names. But in the new environment that was Hogwarts, Vienna found that remembering these small details that she once didn't bother to notice helped. Knowing things helped.

"Cool," she said, stretching out the word as she drummed lightly on her thigh. "Oh, my bad. Forgot to introduce myself, excuse my bad manners," she scoffed, a tad bit of sarcasm evident in the last sentence. Growing up in a strict, aristocratic pure blood family, manners were a concept that was heavily emphasized. Yet, Vienna found herself often with bad manners. In a way they were a rule system, telling what to do. She hated rules. Plus, she really liked pissing off her grandmother.

"I'm Vienna. Vienna Goodwin," she smiled brightly. The two were a bit too far for a handshake, so Vienna sat in her spot contently, keeping her hands still in her lap. She looked over at the boy, scribbling down on his parchment. She squinted. She found it a bit rude he didn't even ask for her name, but she decided to shrug it off. Perhaps he was just a bit too focused. Or old fashioned, like her grandmother, expecting her to introduce herself without question. It didn't really matter. She hummed, finding her gaze wandering into the distance. Perhaps she wasn't the best at this.

Her daydreaming was cut short as the boy spoke again. "Hm, alright. Hey, that's pretty cool. Flexibility is an interesting thing to have in your skill set as an artist," she shrugged.

She sighed, blinking as the dark clouds shifted in the sky above them. She had to admit, she was a bit tired. She had woken up quite early to get her work done, a bit abnormal, considering she wasn't the most efficient not reliable person. She looked back up, finding Kim hadn't fully woken up yet either. "Tired, are we?" She grinned, an almost teasing tone evident in her voice.

Vienna's response to his name was neutral, which implied she didn't know his family's name. And that in turn spoke a lot to him. She definitely wasn't a pureblood, or else she would have reacted to the name. Therefore, she was either a half-blood or a muggle-born. Neither of which would please his parents. But the good news was that they weren't here to stop him from associating with someone like her, which was nice.

He'd regretted it when they'd taken him out of muggle-school early, upon getting his letter to Hogwarts. Those pencils and pens had been marvelous to behold and he'd debated about taking some to the castle when he went, but was afraid his parents would discover them beforehand. As Vienna spoke, a hint of sarcasm in her voice about 'manners' Kim looked up at her again. He shook his head and waved a hand in the air.

"Formalities." He said, his tone dry with amusement.

"They're necessary but downright annoying to keep in mind." He stated.

"Don't you agree?" Kim asked with an arched brow and then started to sketch again. After what seemed like a long time, but was in fact only a few minutes, he finally finished his creation. It was a rough sketch but actually looked really good for the amount of time he'd spent on it. The drawing looked professionally made, but he'd always had a talent to create works of art on his own. He looked over at Vienna again.

Yup. He'd captured her pretty well. For a moment Kim was silent, almost as if he was contemplating something, and then stretched out a hand to beckon her forward. "Here. You can have it, if you want." He told her and held the piece of parchment out in his hand to her. "I'm only doing this to pass the time and relax anyway, it's not like I'm selling it to anyone." Kim explained, waiting for Vienna respond.

As the girl asked if he was tired, Kim yawned again.

He tilted his head to the side and then to the other side to ease out some kinks.

"Mm. I'm not good in the mornings." Kim admitted. "I don't tend to get up until 11AM. Well, back at home. Here, I have to get up early for classes. The weekends are the only times I can sleep in. But my body got so used to waking up early, that I can't even sleep in as late as I used to anymore." He said with a sigh and then blinked, realizing that he'd actually started to talk to Vienna.

Not that she was bad or anything.

It was just that he didn't tend to randomly talk to strangers, even if they were being nice. But it was early and he couldn't think well in the morning, maybe that was it.

The boy's deadpan response caught Vienna a bit off guard. She flinched a bit, turning her gaze towards him. She watched as he spoke, rambling on about 'formalities.' However, Vienna did have to agree with him. She found that closely watching her mannerisms every time she met somebody new did get a bit tiring. Just then, as if he had been reading her mind, Kim spoke again, inquiring her on if she agreed.

"Hm, yeah," she hummed. "They really do. I've spent my whole life with a family that was super strict on manners, so I've gotten used to it. But yeah, it's annoying," she scoffed. Vienna furrowed her brow, squinting at the boy in front of her. He did seem like the classy type, the type that would be focused on all these 'formalities.' Apparently she had gotten him wrong, though. Perhaps she was like her, growing up in a strict pureblood household. He did seem like that type. However, she decided to stop herself from asking.

She watched as Kim continued to sketch, looking back between her and the drawing. Finally, he paused, taking a moment before stretching out his hand and gesturing her to come forward. Vienna tilted her head, pausing before fully taking in the situation. Sitting still by the fountain for quite sometime seemed to zone her out a bit. Has he finished? Did he want her to see? Probably. After all, it was a bit strange, asking to draw somebody without showing them the end result.

She came up to him, and as she did, he stretched his hand out, the parchment in his hand. Vienna let out a soft gasp; she had to admit, she was a bit excited. Not a lot of people had drawn her before. A few people had, for family portraits back home and such. But again, not a lot of people. As he explained his reasoning (which she had to admit, she didn't really care for), she reached out, taking the parchment from Kim's hand.

She adjusted her glasses, taking a moment to take the drawing in. Oh my god, it was accurate. Like, very accurate. Especially coming from somebody she had just met. She knew well that some people she had known for years wouldn't be able to draw her as well. It was realistic too, and may as well have been drawn by a professional artist if not a first year Hogwarts student. She grinned, looking back up at the boy.

"Wow, this is genuinely amazing," she breathed. "Remember me when you get famous!" She joked. However, the boy's completion of his work didn't seem to end their encounter. Vienna didn't mind, though. She quite liked talking to him.

"Hm, yeah. I get you. I used to sleep in all the time back home too, no matter how much my grandmother yelled at me," she scoffed. "Can't really do that now. Nobody's yelling at me anymore but, the professors would be if I was late," she continued, finding their conversation quite pleasant. "Oh well. It's only our first week here. Maybe our brains will get better at it," she said, smiling at Kim. Her tone was evidently softer, less bold and loud as it was at the start of their encounter. He was definitely starting to grow on her.

Kim had been bored.

That was why he'd come out in the first place, wanting to pass time until lunch was served.

He was dressed in a dark outfit, complete with a dark hat to match and a pair of black lace-up boots that concealed his feet. The hat was adjusted so that some of his hair covered part of his face, it had been a styling choice. The only part of his outfit that wasn't dark was the white shirt he wore beneath the jacket. As for accessories, a small earring could be seen in his right ear and a longer, dangling one was present in his left ear. Kim literally looked like an artist.

One that you might see in France.

Vienna had been a welcome distraction.

As she took the parchment from him and let out a gasp, Kim tilted his head to the side.

What had surprised her? That he'd drawn her? Or she didn't like it and was shocked? Well, he wasn't really that good at it, it wasn't as if he was a professional and did it for a living.

It was simply a hobby of his. But before he could relate his thoughts, Vienna spoke again, complimenting the work. Ah, so that was it. Kim shook his head and his lips twitched a bit with amusement at her next words. "Eh, it's not that great. But I'm glad you like it." He said with a nod and it was true, Kim did like it when people liked his works. But he wouldn't go out of the way to present them. After all, he didn't think he was that good at it.

At least, not when it came to the true professionals. Vienna spoke about not enjoying mornings either and Kim nodded. "Like I said before, I thought I'd sleep in on the weekends but after a whole week of waking up early for classes... I guess my body automatically thought I'd need to get up early again." He told her with a sigh and shook his head, putting his quill and inkwell back into his satchel. The tall boy looked up.

"So what are you doing for the rest of the morning? Waiting around like me, until lunch comes?" Kim asked with an arched brow.
