𝓡egina idly adjusted into a more comfortable sitting position, a relatively thick book titled Living With Legilimens by Queenie Goldstein balanced carefully in her delicate hands. Orchid eyes danced almost gleefully over the words, her mind completely engrossed in the fascinating theories of the Mind Arts. She was still too young to fully master such powerful and compelling magic, of course, but it brought no harm to educate herself on the subject in order to have a good foundation. Legilimency would evidently prove to be very useful in the future, and the thirst for such a knowledge was enthralling--to be able to break through a person's mind and expose them of their darkest secrets or their most guarded memories to use as leverage against them. No doubt such an imperious motive would paint her in a picture of malice, but Regina had never claimed to be a good person. She didn't consider herself to be a bad person either, as she was someone who acted purely on personal goals that benefitted solely her regardless if it was considered an honest or evil act. She didn't believe in choosing sides--in a cutthroat battlefield, only the strongest would prevail. This was who Regina was, and how she saw the world.

The peacefulness that came with sitting by the Great Lake was most comforting, and it was one of the reasons why the youngest Miller Heiress enjoyed spending her reading time here, her back propped against a large tree and surrounded by nothing but constant tranquility. Occasionally, the chilly wind of February would breeze through elegant raven locks of hair, but Regina welcomed the feeling. Her gaze would also sometimes stray from the lines on the page to stare out at the stillness of the water surface and an amusing thought would cross her mind of how comparable she was to the grandiose lake that stretched over the horizon. If undisturbed, the water would remain motionless and calm, in contrast to when something came in contact to it. Regina had always thought that she faired better alone than pretending to be someone sociable--the most beautiful and great things often stand alone, after all.

The solitary Gryffindor turned her attention back to the book, turning the page to begin a new chapter on Occlumency.

───── Faye Simmons was, although apprehensive to the public, an explorer. Every inch of Hogwarts was like a different story, like the ones she'd read when she was younger. Well, when she'd force her mother to pick them up from the library, that is. From the library to the classrooms to the owlery, the landscapes always brought her so much joy, unlike how she'd felt in her home city of Derry. Derry had felt restrictive, bringing her so much anxiety that she'd acted as if the world was going to end, holed up in her little house learning about basic maths.

Now, she was enjoying her Sunday, away from school work that she couldn't wrap her head around and older students that didn't understand her. The muggle-born had decided to bound down through the Hogwarts grounds in her bright yellow trainers, not stopping to take in the breath-taking scenery. She'd bought the shoes at what she called 'The Great Charity Shop Incident of 2018, aka the time when she had tried to go out of the house to buy CDs and ended up holing herself up in her house for four years. The shoes had been through a lot of wear and tear, but she loved them.

Making her way down towards the Great Lake, Faye perked when she thought she saw a massive squid underneath the surface of the water. She'd heard from other students about the Giant Squid, and she wanted to befriend it. Her skips and hops quickly picked up to become a full blown run, speeding towards the water. A dark head of hair distracted her from her sprint, gravity forcing her body down. Faye rolled through the grass for a while, before landing with her legs spread, hair messy and eyes wide.

"Hi! Enjoying your book?" She wheezed, her light and cheerful voice perky as ever despite falling down a hill.

𝓞rchid eyes blinked in surprised as a loud thump! resonated to her right, distracting her momentarily from her book. Regina turned her head and was instantly met with a head full of ginger and hazel brown irises, blinking at her with mirth. Her lips immediately tugged down into a patronizing frown as she regarded the other girl from head to toe, noting mentally with distaste at the disastrous mix of pink top, green skirt and bright yellow trainers. Did this air-head had no sense of style? One would think she did not dress herself in front of a mirror. Regina allowed a portion of her disdain to filter through her usually cold expression when she assessed the blatantly embarrassing position the girl was in--had she fallen down and rolled in the grass like an overly excited animal? How repugnant.
"Hi! Enjoying your book?"
"I was...until your utterly infantile and idiotic entrance had disturbed the peacefulness," The Gryffindor scoffed. Judging by the red head's atrocious style and behavior, Regina assumed she was woefully not apart of the Pureblood society. The raven-haired aristocrat wished not to be associated with anyone of a lesser bloodline with such...flagrant naiveté.

"So, if you would excuse me, I shall be relocating myself into a much more pleasurable place to continue my reading, preferably without your brazen presence."

Regina closed her Legilimency book with more force than necessary in a display of visible annoyance, tucking it under her arm as she stood up and glared down her nose at the ginger. She turned on her heels and strode away with purposeful steps, not bothering to look if the other girl was following her. She certainly hoped not--the Lion did not take kindly to those stubborn enough to test her patience. Fingers clenched the thick black cover of her book as rosy lips thinned, her mind already coming up with ways to intimidate the unwanted person.

───── A frown appeared on the Ravenclaw's face, her nose scrunching to form lines throughout her face. It was cute, in a weird way. She now finally was able to get a good look at the reason she now had grass stains all over her and a really annoying bruise, which owned strangely coloured eyes and absolutely no sense of style in her eyes. Honestly, did she not understand colour? The only hue in her outfit was a burgundy dress, and even that was boring! However, she still intrigued Faye. She was like an open book, needing to be squeezed of every single little detail about her life until she knew everything about her and they could be best buds!

However, when her new bestie referred to her as 'infantile', her goofy expression faltered, innocence almost cracking and being replaced with a harder, truer emotion. Only for a split second, though, before it was replaced with a dopey grin and that same exact scrunching of the nose. Did that comment remind her of people she wanted to forget? Yes! Did it faze her? Of course not! She didn't even know this lass's social security number yet!

But, how was she supposed to ask if her friend suddenly got up and started to leave, complaining that she needed 'a more pleasurable place to continue her reading'? Scrambling in the grass in an effort to get up, Faye did a backwards roll into a standing position, earning her a speed advantage against the girl which made her have to skip backwards.

"Why are you leaving? Are you not having fun? I can have fun! Have you ever read 'Pride and Prejudice'? I don't get why Lizzy is so into Mr Darcy, he's so rude! Okay, so he comes out of the lake, no big deal? Well, if you came out of that lake right now like he did I'd be pretty amazed but, you know." Faye looked her dead in the eye, her lopsided smile staying stuck on her face despite her weird words. "Whatcha reading, bestie?"

𝕬 twitching eye was the only indication that Regina was irritated beyond her blank expression when she heard the other girl's footsteps steadily catching up to her. She quickened her pace in hopes of conveying that she had no intention of conversing with the redhead any further, but it seemed that the girl needed a serious lesson on reading social cues. And now she was even spouting some nonsense about a book that Regina had never heard of--a plebeian Muggle thing, most likely. The Gryffindor prided herself on being a resourceful person and an avid reader of books, but she would never pick up anything that did not provide useful knowledge for magic.
"Well, if you came out of that lake right now like he did I'd be pretty amazed but, you know."
No, I do not. But I do know that I will push you into this lake if you continue to aggravate me.
Of course, these words never left Regina's mind. She was more focused on trying to get away from the bothersome thorn in her side that had presented itself in the form of this brown-eyed girl. She was too eager, too enthusiastic. Speaking rapidly without a single pause, and jumping from one question to another. Regina keenly felt her aspen wand tucked under the sleeve of her burgundy dress and contemplated whether or not she should just hex this girl silly to get the point across.

She did not give in to the temptation, and instead tightened her grip on the Legilimency book and pointedly kept her gaze forward, not meeting her unwanted tag along.

"I am not your 'bestie', so I would prefer if you did not address me with such an undistinguished Muggle term," The Heiress gritted her teeth. "And there is no use of telling you what I am reading, as I do no expect your dim-witted mind to even understand the insightful knowledge of the Mind Arts such as Legilimency."

As soon as she finished her sentence, Regina whipped around and brandished her wand threateningly in the redhead's face, her orchid eyes a poisonous purple colour and narrowed with contempt.

"Cease your insistent following of me at once. I shan't repeat myself a second time," She hissed under her breath.

They were both standing at the very edge of the lake now, closer to the Forbidden Forest. No one else was in sight at the moment, so there would be no witness should Regina chose to force her hand. The raven-haired noble preferred not to act rashly in public lest words travel to her controlling Father at home, but if this girl still remained stubborn even with a wand in her face, then Regina would have to make her understand.

───── This girl was a proper Mr Darcy, she thought. Haughty, uptight, but did she care? That was a stupid question. She would follow this girl into hell and back just to get her approval, and she'd just met her. She hated her, or did she? A nagging at the back of her head told her that no matter what she did, her new bestie would never think of her as her friend like she did, but Faye decided not to act on this nag. She was too caught up in the fact that she longed for even a second of a social relationship.

All her life, she'd been the one who hadn't talked. The one who was way too awkward to even walk up to somebody, who flaked on people and was called 'antisocial'. So, she'd forced herself to be sociable. She would talk to people no matter what and always, even if they didn't have even a sliver of goodness in them, see the light to every dark they possessed. But, now she was 'weird', constantly trying to fit in but never truly belonging anywhere, feeling like an alien wherever she went.

I guess, that's why she stayed firmly put on the ground when the girl pointed her fancy stick at her. She knew it was a wand, the weapon and device favoured by all witches, but could never quite understand them. Surely it would look nicer to have a metal engraved rod or something, not a twig she could quite easily find in her back garden. Unlike her bestie, who was quite good at keeping her mouth shut, words just tumbled out of her mouth at random. She couldn't keep them in, it's not her fault she was 'different'.

"Why are you pointing a stick at me, Miss Darcy?" Faye had decided to call her a feminine version of Mr Darcy, as she found many a resemblance in the two people. "Do you not enjoy my company? Do witches not have besties? What a sad world I seem to have entered. It's like Alice in Wonderland, but magic and depressing and that isn't a very good analogy, is it? "

The Ravenclaw stood with a dopey grin on her face, thinking that all wrongs had been righted and that her and her new friend were able to go have a tea party up at the castle.

𝕽egina's face went eerily blank as the irritating the redhead's clear disrespect of the magical weapon she had pointed to her face, and her thin patience snapped as the dimwit continued to spout more whimsical nonsense. Her prized aspen wand, the wood-quality destined to for both aspiring and accomplished duelists, was no mere stick. And Regina definitely didn't like the way this girl seemed to be immune to her intimidation and glacial disregard. It made an uncomfortable feeling stirred inside her chest...something so unfamiliar that she couldn't discern what it was. No one had ever so blatantly ignored such an imminent threat before, especially not with a wand in their face.

Perhaps a demonstration was in order. She would teach this Mudblood a lesson she wouldn't ever forget.

Regina's wrist flicked swiftly as she silently repeated the incantation of the Knockback Jinx inside her mind, the tip of her wand drawing the shape of a checkmark finished with a tiny hook in the air.

"Flipendo!" The Gryffindor shouted, and the blue light that shot out made other girl instantly fly back and into the freezing waters of the lake as a loud 'BOOM!' resonated between them.

The young Miller Heiress watched with concealed dark satisfaction as the insufferable, unwanted Mudblood was finally removed from her side. It was much too risky to attack another student out in the open like this, even more so with a powerful jinx that could leave lasting physical damages. Anyone could stumble upon the scene right that moment and incriminate her, so Regina immediately turned on her heels to remove herself from the surrounding. She hadn't even send the redhead flying that far into the lake anyways, so the ravenette was sure she could just swim back up to the ground. Whether or not she had sustained any visible damage from the Knockback Jinx, it was of no concern to Regina. It was to get the point across, after all.

The raven-haired Lion tucked her aspen wand back under the sleeve of her dress, her back turned to her victim and unaware of how she was fairing in the water.

───── The girl's face had changed, Faye noticed. She wasn't the best at identifying facial expressions, actually she was notoriously bad at it (she couldn't help it!), but there was obviously something wrong. Had she said something wrong? Anxiety began to creep it's way into her brain, corrupting every bit of happiness like a chemical to her DNA.

The cold, dark shadow of the girl started to do some sort of incantation, like one of the witches in Macbeth, (but she was defo prettier than the hags from the play) and Faye noticed the distant expression turn into one of determination and, before she could at least try to ask if she was feeling alright, her feet swiftly leaving the ground as she was blown back like a leaf.

Although it was a short trip into the shallow end of the lake, it was an experience unlike no other. It was like, to her, being thrust into a bath with extreme force, only the bath was a massive lake and the force was an invisible push from a magical spell that was cast by your new best friend who might hate you.

With a mighty 'OOF!', Faye slammed down, butt first, onto the pebbles at the bottom of the lake. Although the water only reached her midriff, her skirt and, most tragically, her favourite yellow trainers were soaked through. Well, at least the shoes had lived a good life. After the initial shock of the incident had moved through her like a shockwave, she looked up at the girl and scrunched her entire face up.

"Are you kidding me?" She screeched, wavering on confusement and shock, before turning into glee "At least give a lass a warning, saints! If you wanted to swim, you could have asked me! You, Miss Darcy, are a confusing character!"

𝕿he raven-haired Gryffindor felt vindictively amused at the terrified screech. She didn't pride on being a particularly cruel person (unlike her 'dearest' sister) but she had little conscience to be considerate of people she did not care about. Therefore, Regina paid no mind to the fallen redhead and began walking away from the lake, nose high in the air.

She didn't make it very far when the other girl spoke up with glee.
"At least give a lass a warning, saints! If you wanted to swim, you could have asked me! You, Miss Darcy, are a confusing character!"
Regina freezed instantly, her head whipping around to stare at the Mud--Muggleborn with wide eyes and her lips slightly parted in surprise.

This girl...even after having her intelligence insulted, being explicitly told that her presence was unwanted and even after being attacked with a powerful jinx that caused her to fall into the cold black waters of the Great Lake...she was still adamant to act so carefree and utterly whimsical. It was as if the redhead didn't have a single bad bone in her body. Usually, any person that had ever had the unfortune to be met with Regina's threats would have accused her of being ill-mannered and stormed off by now. Yet, the other girl was unrelenting, as though she didn't want to give up on becoming friends with her. As though Regina was someone worth fighting for.

(No one had ever tried that hard for her before.)

It was unsettling. It was unfamiliar. It was...

The ravenette felt her breath hitch and turned around once more to do something she had never done--run away. She didn't want to linger any moment longer, she didn't understand these conflicting and uncomfortable feelings. She didn't wish to understand at all.

Even so, as she clutched her book tightly to her chest and getting steadily further away with every sprint, Regina had a feeling that she would not be able to be rid of that red-haired Muggleborn with warm and bright hazel eyes anytime soon.
