The smell of food wafted throughout the Great Hall as Adelaide entered, and her stomach rumbled in response. Her first classes after returning from winter break had went great and Adelaide was delighted to be back. Although currently, all her mind could focus on was the food covering every inch of the four tables as her stomach attempted to alert everyone nearby that she was hungry.

She started to make her way towards the Ravenclaw table until a familiar face made it's way into her peripheral vision. Pivoting around in the general direction of the Gryffindor table, her eyes squinted, not quite believing who she was seeing. Since when was Ivy back from Beauxbatons? Her mind went back to the break, trying to recall if her parents ever mentioned Ivy returning. Oh. Of course, how could she have forgotten? She remembered hearing about Alison's death. It was a tragedy, she couldn't even begin to imagine how Ivy was feeling. She was so young, Adelaide's age - it was heartbreaking.

She stood there, not caring about everyone trying to get past her, currently in a mental debate with herself on whether she should go over to Ivy or not. The older girl has likely had loads of people come up to her, and she probably doesn't want to be reminded of the death of her younger sister any more than she already has been. She hasn't seen Ivy in ages though, and a lot has happened since then. A catch-up session was definitely long overdue by now.

Coming to a final decision, she took a deep breath and walked over. "Hey, Ivy!" She called out, waving at her, "How are you? I didn't realize you were back. Are you glad to be back at Hogwarts? How was Beauxbatons?" The blonde thought it was for the best to ignore the elephant in the room, for now at least. She wasn't going to pressure Ivy into talking about it, because she knew if she were in Ivy's position, she wouldn't want anyone to mention it.

6 january, 2022.
Ivy sat alone at the Gryffindor table on purpose. Her first day back had been a little too much for her so far, with unwanted memories popping up everywhere she roamed in this castle, and she was really in no mood to fake smiles and befriend random people in the hopes that one of them would stick. Besides, the friends she'd known from her one year here had seemed to disappear into thin air. Either they were very good at hiding from her or they were gone for good, either dead or expelled or transferred to another school as she had been. It wasn't like they owed her anything, she knew, but her heart still gave a pang at the thought of her old friends. The universe kept proving to her that people would continuously abandon her, time and time again. Both her sisters, her parents, and now... them.

So she stuck her nose resolutely in a tattered copy of Emma and tried to make it look like she was reading so people wouldn't bother her. It seemed to be working, until... it wasn't. Ivy groaned internally as she heard her name being called from somewhere in the Great Hall. She couldn't wait for her shiny new kid status to wear off - honestly, was it too much to ask for five minutes of peace? She looked up from her book reluctantly to look for the source of the voice. The visible frustration on her face disappeared quickly and was replaced with a smile as she located a round-eyed girl with blonde hair making her way to her.

"Adelaide!" The younger girl would be greeted with a hug. Having grown up together, Ivy suddenly felt ashamed of herself for not thinking to say hi to the Barlowe sisters. She would laugh softly at Adelaide's succession of questions, before answering, "I'm fine, not really, and Beauxbatons was good." Maybe Adelaide could see the pain behind her smile, the haunted look in her eyes that only came from someone who hadn't slept properly for weeks. She was grateful to her for not bringing up Alison straight away. Ivy sat back down, putting a bookmark in her book to mark the page. "What about you?" she deflected the conversation to avoid answering any more questions. The less talking she did, the better.

Adelaide happily accepted the hug from the older girl before taking a seat at the Gryffindor table. Now that she was closer to Ivy, she noticed how tired the Gryffindor looked. You would be a fool to not notice, and it made Adelaide's concern and sympathy for Ivy grow tremendously. She made an effort to not show her concern, choosing to continue smiling as if everything was alright in the world. Maybe it made her seem insensitive, ignoring how her friend was actually feeling and allowing her to mask her pain with a smile. But Adelaide and Ivy were quite similar in a lot of ways, and Adelaide was doing what she would want someone to do for her. Ignore it until she wants to talk about it.

"I'm good!" She said, taking a sip of pumpkin juice before continuing, "I got sorted into Ravenclaw, mother is very happy about that, and I'm loving Hogwarts so far. I also got a cat for my birthday! She's called Nina, and I really love her. You need to see her sometime! Oh, and Eloise is really mad about me getting a cat, which is very funny," She piled food onto her plate as she spoke. Taking a bite of a sausage, she swallowed before continuing, "Was it weird having to speak French constantly? It must've took some getting used to. Oh! Did you see any famous landmarks? What was the French food like?" The blonde hoped she didn't annoy Ivy with the onslaught of questions, but her goal was to get the older girl's mind off the death of her sister, even if it was just for a short space of time.

With a fork of mashed potatoes halfway to her mouth, she suddenly took notice of Ivy's distinct lack of food. "Aren't you going to eat something?" She asked cautiously, setting her fork back down, "You need to eat." Adelaide knew she was likely walking on thin ice by asking that question, and she was trying to tread as carefully as possible, choosing her words carefully, which was not something she normally done. She would still avoid mentioning Alison, but she needed Ivy to know that Adelaide was here for her and she did care.

6 january, 2022. sorry for the wait!
Adelaide's chatter elicited an affectionate smile from Ivy, although there was a slightly vacant look behind her grey eyes, no doubt from the tiredness. "Ravenclaw? That's amazing!" It was good that Adelaide was happy with her house placement. Ivy remembered she'd been disappointed with her own placement initially, having wished for Slytherin like her mother, but Gryffindor had proved to be more than satisfactory. It was strange being back after a year away; it was almost as if nothing had changed at all. "It was a bit weird speaking French at first, yes," she answered. "It's weirder having to speak English again, though." Her mind was still slowly adjusting to thinking in English. "And yes, my grandfather took us four..."

The last word got caught in her throat. It had reminded her that the "us four" she'd been referring to was now three, with her trapped on the wrong side of the ocean. Ivy swallowed the sudden pain that had risen in her throat, and smiled gently at Adelaide, hoping the younger girl would ignore it. "We went to see some landmarks, yes. And French food is very sophisticated. I'll take you some day." She regretted her words as soon they came out of her mouth. To be honest, she didn't really know if she could ever visit those places again.

Annoyance bubbled up in her for a split second when Adelaide asked if she was going to eat, although Ivy would not show it, instead offering a smile. "I'm not very hungry. I ate earlier - it must be the jet lag." She was bullshitting, of course. The time difference between England and France was not significant enough for her to not be eating lunch. For some reason, though, Ivy's eating schedule had been completely off recently. "What class you have next?" she deflected. "I've got Divination. Do you have any idea who teaches it?"

Ivy's answers were short and vague compared to Adelaide's onslaught of questions, but Adelaide supposed she couldn't blame the older girl. She likely wasn't in the mood for talking much. Adelaide wouldn't be either. "It definitely would be weird," she agreed. Adelaide only spoke English - which is honestly a surprise for an overachiever like her - but she understood that it'd be really weird having to switch from speaking and thinking in French then back to English.

Ivy cut her sentence short, and it didn't take a genius to work out why. She should probably say something, offer some words of comfort, anyone else probably would, but Adelaide knew Ivy didn't want to talk about it and she really really didn't want to make Ivy angry or upset. So, she decided to leave it. She returned Ivy's small smile and moved on, "Really? You don't need to take me! I mean, It would be amazing and I'd love to see all the landmarks, but I'm not going to force you to take me,"

The Ravenclaw continued to eat as Ivy said she wasn't very hungry. She knew the older girl was lying, she wasn't stupid. France was only an hour ahead of them, so it wouldn't be enough to give you jetlag. She wouldn't push it though. She merely nodded and left it. "I have Charms, I'm pretty sure," she said, "Divination? Hm," her head tilted to the side in thought, "I'm pretty sure Professor Booth teaches that. He's new, or sort of new, he joined in September, so he wasn't here when you were at Hogwarts."
