Winter Wonderland
Emma was taking a break from being responsible...by taking a walk. Yes, she was living dangerously. But because it was winter and the sun set much earlier, if she did her homework before taking a walk, then she wouldn't be able to take the walk. So instead, since the weather was for once cooperative, Emma had decided to put off her homework till after supper. Yes, it would probably mean she would be frustrated and have a hard time falling asleep, but it would be worth it.
The sun was shining and the wind had paused it's blustery nature for the afternoon. The snow was sparkling and while it was cold, it wasn't freezing. There was a difference of course. One was bearable to be out in, the other was not. Laughing, feeling exhilarated, Emma attempted to do a weird skip hop, then bent low to grab two handfuls of snow, throwing them up in the above her head. Settling a bit, Emma started humming a song one of the twins assured her was the hit of the year, never mind that it was only a couple months into the new year.
Emma continued to walk, not caring where she went, only making sure to pay attention to the sun so she could be inside before the sun set and get supper, then start her homework.

Winter Wonderland

It was too cold. This morning, they had awoken to frozen toes and fingers, even with their big quilt on their bed. Getting up would prove difficult too, as the dormitory, normally warm and cozy, had a chill that winter would be jealous of. They sighed and threw on two pairs of socks, their uniform with their winter coat and a Hufflepuff scarf and mittens. Now that they were a bit warmer, they got ready to go to breakfast and then classes.
The next thing they knew, it was afternoon and they had a little bit of time to themselves. So instead of starting on homework -who would want to do that?- they decided to take a short walk around the grounds. It wasn't long until Trix saw another kid walking around, too. They were a Hufflepuff, like them. Once they got a little closer they realized it was Emma Wynn. They knew of her, but not her personally, so they decided to go over, especially after they saw her lift two fistfuls of snow in the air and powder herself. Laughing she walked over.
"Hey Emma! I'm Trix. Would you like to play together? I find things are much more pleasant with others!" They smiled what they hoped was a welcoming smile and scooped up some snow, too, and trowing it over their head. They giggled and gasped at the cold as some ice got down her neck. She shivered and unraveled their scarf, ejecting the ice from their neck.

Laughter rang out in the snow, and Emma was very happy, her cheeks bright red and her nose chilly but it was well worth it. Looking to where a voice had sounced, Emma turned quickly, stumbling, and almost falling. Chuckling awkwardly, Emma realized this was a fellow first year Hufflepuff. She recalled seeing her around the common room but had not really been introduced at all.
"Hi Trix, nice to meet you! You must be really good with names to remember mine." Emma interjected, shaking her head to hopefully remove some of the snow that had collected there. "Sure, I'd love it! The weathers so nice for once, that I couldn't resist coming out." Emma watched as they copied her in throwing some snow around, before removing their scarf.
STanding slightly awkwardly, Emma looked around, trying to decide what to do. On impulse, she grabbed some snow and compacted it into a ball, although the snow was a little powdery to stick together. She threw what she could lightly at Trix, hoping that they wouldn't mind but most of the snow came apart before even reaching them. Laughing, Emma said "Oops, apparently it's not very sticky today."
Emma put her hands behind her back, standing there and wondering what else to say. Coming up with something, she quickly spoke "Had a good holiday?"

Trix giggled. "Well we have classes together, I hear your name everytime they call attendance. Besides that, Im pretty forgetful." They tried to juke the snowball, but since it was so powdery, it hit them like a shotgun blast. They laughed at their failure and bent down to grab some snow. They threw it at Emma, but they had the same luch as Emma. The snow just fell apart when they threw it. Trix laughed awkwardly and decided that it wasnt the right kind of snow for a snowball fight.
Then the conversation came to a natural lul, making Trix feel a bit awkward. Luckily Emma came with the save and asked them about their holiday. "Oh yeah! Mom got me two Lego sets and a new video game! My parents are Muggles, so I don't get any magical gifts, but they did give me a little bit of wizard cash to get something from this world." Trix breathed into their hands to warm them up and smiled at Emma. "What about you? Did you get anything cool?"
After their conversation about their holidays, it was Trix's turn to ask the question. "Can I ask you something? What is Quidditch? I've heard a little about it, like its a wizard sport played on broomsticks, but thats all I know..." They were starting to get cold from not moving so they invited Emma to start walking with them.
They loved walking around the castle; the forest was covered in white from the snow and it made it truly look like a winter wonderland. They took a deep breath in, soaking in the smells of nature and the crisp snow. "The forest looks beautiful, doesn't it?"

Emma laughed, not able to resist when Trix answered her. It must be a combination of the fresh, winter air and the nature of Trix that had Emma out of her head, and not yet overthinking every single word tht was spoken. "I'm sure you're not!" Emma interjected. "Besides that's what notes and planners are for." Though admittedly, Emma was lax on using her planner since Christmas. She just didn't pull it out as she often.
Feeling some snow hitting her, Emma gasped, then giggled. "Oh what sets? There seem to be so many cool ones now! Emma had seen several of the different sets around the shops and found them interesting. "Oh cool! My parents are muggles as well. It was fun to surprise them and the twins with some small magical gifts. Though I've learned that I won't accept any treats from them until I'm sure they've run out of Bertie Botts. I never should have gotten them some." Emma frowned, not impressed with her siblings and determined not to get them another gift that would backfire like that one.
"Hmmm...well I did get some wizard money but my grandparents got me a couple sets of books I had been looking to read, and my parents also got me a planner, a super cozy blanket and some fleece slippers." Emma thought they were really cool, but they didn't seem as interesting as what Trix had gotten. Trix probably would think she was a bit weird. Emma put on a small smile, not wanting Trix to realize she was worried that they would think Emma was weird.
Emma looked around, taking a deep breath in to soak some of the peace back in, hoping it would quiet the doubts that frequently sprang up. Her smile brightened a bit, "It does, very magical! Though I can imagine with all the trees there must not be any snow on the ground."
Not a problem! I usually try to stay off on Sundays other than a peek or two to see what's going on.

Trix couldn't help but smile when Emma told them about her parents being Muggles, too. "Oh thats so cool! I got my parents some chocolate frogs and they almost died of shock! It was so funny. Now they try to expect the unexpected when I come home. Not like that hasnt been the deal my whole life. How did your parents react when you first started showing signs of being magical?"
Trix was honestly very interested in Emma's experience being a Muggle-born, too. They hadn't met all that many people, being rather shy for the first little bit until they opened up. It was hard the first couple months. They were overwhelmed and missing home, but now that they had gone home for the winter break and saw their parents, they were much more willing to go and make friends.
And Emma seemed like she could be just that; a good friend. So Trix was very careful not to weird her out too much. They knew they could be a little much at times and tried very hard not to overwhelm the girl with questions and comments.
"I got the tree house and a cool little set that makes two cats! I already did the cats, but the tree house will take a little longer. I was gonna do it over summer. I love getting slippers and fluffy socks for Christmas! My mom always gives me the best warm socks for a stocking stuffer!" They listened to Emma continue, wanting to show that they cared about what the girl had to say. They knew that sometimes they could be inattentive, and was trying really hard not to lose focus.
"Ooh! I love reading! Whats your favorite book? Mine are all Goosebump books." They blushed a little bit, knowing that some kids thought they were dumb, hoping Emma wasn't one of them. They put their hands in their pockets, trying to keep in the little heat their body was generating, and kept walking at a slow, lumbering pace. They'd love to go faster, but the snow on the ground made the trek a little difficult. "It must be nice for the creatures that live in there though, not having to deal with the snow on the ground. Im sure they are much warmer without it always there to dampen your fur..." They trailed off, looking into the forest. "I know its out of bounds, but one day I want to go exploring!" They pulled their gaze back to Emma. "What about you?"

Emma snorted slightly at Trix's explanation. Laughing, she asked "Can you really expect the unexpected? That seems like a contradiction." Emma sobered slightly when Trix asked about her parent's reaction about the magic. Honestly Emma still didn't think her parents remembered the incident that truly stuck out to Emma as magic but they also hadn't discussed it after the professor had explained everything. "ummmm...well they knew the whole items reappearing where I didn't think I put them but that was just a whole memory joke thing. But once they found out about magic, it just seemed to make sense as like oh, so she really isn't forgetful. There was this one time I kind of was invisible or something when they were looking for me but they just figured I was lying and I'm not sure if they really put two and two together." Emma shrugged, looking around. "What about you? Did your parents have that ah-ha moment?" Emma asked, trying to move the conversation off of that rather silly story she shared.
Trix felt somewhat comfortable, especially as she was a fellow muggle-born, and probably had a similar experience at least at finding out about magic and kind of the overwhelmingness of the whole thing. Especially having to learn so many new things.
Oh! I haven't seen the tree house but the cats look very cute! They must be a nice addition to your room." Emma grinned, happy that Trix didn't think her gifts were silly or boring. "I think the warm socks are the best especially with how cold it can get here. I swear somedays I just want to sit in front of the fire all day."
"I've read those though I will admit I'm not a big fan of scary. I have to read them during the middle of the day or it freaks me out too much." Emma's shiver had nothing to do with the cold and everything to do with the scary stories she had read. " That's kind of difficult. I will admit I love reading the Sherlock Holmes collection, or Anne of Green Gables. They're my comfort books at this point." Emma laughed quietly, knowing it was likely a bit strange to have books as comfort objects rather than something more normal like a blanket or something.
Continued to walk slowly, Emma made sure to place her feet carefully, not trying to go down by hitting an icy patch or something like that. "That makes sense, and the trees would shelter them from the wind. I swear the wind is the worst when it blows in the winter." Emma shrugged at the question about the forest. "I dunno. It'd likely be interesting but I'm sure there's some dangerous creatures in there. I don't think we've learned enough to go in yet. Maybe once we learn some more spells or something, it would be interesting." Emma admitted that it was more about comfort and rule-breaking then the dangerous creatures. She tried not to get in trouble, instead preferring to follow the rules, making sure that everything went smoothly and no more guilt could be added to the list that could randomly pop into her head.

Trix giggled at the contraditction. "I think its something they'll never truly expect, having no magic themselves. But they definitely had that moment. When the nice man who came to tell us about the wizarding world came to see my family, my mum and dad's mouths dropped. It was like everything made sense; all the weird happenings. There was one time when I was climbing this big tree in our back yard and I fell, but instead of hitting the ground I kinda.... Bounced. It really freaked my parents out and they didn't let me climb the tree again because it might attract the neighbors attention if it happened again. My mum and dad were so relieved that I was magical and not sick or something." They reached their hands high above their head in a stretch and looked around at the snow on the ground.
Trying to keep their focus on the conversation, they nodded in agreement. "Really, whats bettee than a book, a fire, and some cozy socks along with the best hot cocoa this school has to offer!" They smiled, thinking about the cold morning they had spent cuddled up by the Hufflepuff hearth. It truly was magical. Everything about their new life in the Wizarding world astounded and amazend them. The fact that there was, in fact, magical creatures and plants and beings; it just was too good to be true. But, day after day, Trix kept waking up to a new day in the castle.
"Not a fan of scary! Aww man... Thats my favorite! I love feeling scared, when I'm the one making me scared. It makes me feel alive. But I do overdo it sometimes and cant sleep cause I'm so scared." They laughed again. "But I do love Sherlock Holmes, too! Some of his stuff can be scary too, and I love the olden times asthetic. I've never read Anne of Green Gables." They thought for a second, and then spoke their mind. "I think that my comfort book would have to be... The first Animorphs book. I know it's a little kids book, but I really like the idea of turning into an animal." They thought for a moment, a few crunchy steps of snow sounding in the silence.
Nodding, they rubbed at their nose to warm it a smidge. "I agree. The wind is rutheless!" They giggled, feeling a little silly. After listening to Emma, Trix shrugged, not quite convinced. "I guess it would be good to at least know a defensive spell or two before going into the forest... But when we are older? Maybe it could be like a school trip or something."

Emma laughed quietly, hoping that Trix understood she wasn't laughing at them but instead laughing at the scenario. "That would have been quite amusing I can imagine. And even if you got caught, I'm sure you could have come up with something. Though maybe not in that particular situation. It might have been a little bit much." Emma's already red cheeks darkened at the ramble she just went on. "I'd be curious what kind of sickness would make you bounce instead of break bones? That would be a very interesting disease." Emma added quietly, letting her arms swing back to grab one another for just a moment before letting them swing at her sides. She also moved her head from side to side, trying to crack it. This only went on for a moment before she stoped, knowing it was a bad habit.
"Yes! Definitely the perfect day especially when it's super stormy." Emma grinned, already looking forward to the next stormy day even as she enjoyed this lovely weather. Hopefully there were still a couple of stormy days left in the winter.
Emma chuckled when Trix mentioned scary stories. "Yeah, I've just learned not to read them too late and I'm fine though if it's really scary it will keep me up." Emma nodded to Trix's words. "My favorite bits are reading about how he came to his conclusions. It seems impossible to solve and yet he always figures it out." Emma wasn't surprised that Trix hadn't heard of the series, it wasn't one of those books that a lot of people had read in the UK, at least in Emma's experience with her peers. "It's a good series about an orphan girl who goes to live with a brother and sister in PEI, an island in Canada. It follows her as she grows up. I love it because she's a bit of a dreamer and it's just really amusing. Plus she's a redhead as well." Emma grinned, "I'm awful at describing books but you can borrow my copy of the first book if you'd like to."
Talking about books always made Emma feel very comfortable. "Oh! I don't think I've read that series, but I've heard about it. It would be interesting! Do you think you'd like to be an animagus then?" Emma hoped she had remembered the term correctly. She hadn't really done much other than read the term once or twice but knew it was about people turning into animals.
"Yeah, that would be cool. I wonder if herbology or care of magical creatures would require going into the forest. Those are the only two I could think of that would make any kind of sense." An interesting thought for later. After all, she'd have to get through classes this year before worrying about other years. Not that she was doing terribly but still she needed to put in work to learn everything.

Trix laughed along with Emma. "Oh they didnt think it was very funny! They were so scared for me, and even more scared after it happened. Actually, it was quite scary..." They frowned, remembering how worried her parents looked. Then their face lifted. "But I bet it would be funny now that we know what was happening. I think they were just scared. Can you believe they yelled at me when it happened?" Trix giggled. "Now, looking back, it was pretty great." Trix let out a long sigh, feeling a little awkward that they had just shared so much. Their hands hid behind her back as she picked at her fingernails.
Trix couldn't agree more with Emma when it came to reading. They were so happy that they had met someone who liked reading too! Most kids hated reading anything. Trix only hated reading when it was assigned. If a book was assigned, it didn't matter if it was their favorite book, they would have a lot of difficulty reading it. It was like a switch got flipped in their brain, and as soon as it was an assignment they just didnt want to do it.
Trix nodded. "I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a way with words. It felt like actual magic when he explains everything and how it all fits together! His prose is like a grandfather clock where all the gears come together to tell an amazing story!" They loved mystery and horror, so they had thought about this a lot. "Say, have you ever read The Giver? Its so interesting! I think that all of Lowis Lowry's books are amazing, but the Giver starts it all."
Trix laughed again. "Yeah! I get so scared when its nighttime and I watch or read something scary. During the day I'm much braver! Its easier to be brave when you can see everything."
Trix couldn't lie, they spaced out while Emma was telling them about the book, but fought their brain to get back into the conversation. "Ohh! I'd love to borrow it! Though I don't know when I'd be able to read it with all this homework." Trix sighed heavily once again and kicked at the snow. "It's like it never ends. I havent read a book for fun in - three months! Not that all the classes are boring, its just not as fun as books for.. well fun!"
What the girl said next confused the Muggle-born. "Animagus? You mean... There are people who can turn into ANIMALS?!" They couldn't help it, their sentence ended in more of a scream than a normal tlaking voice. They immediately flushed, feeling super self conscious. Almost as if to compensate, they whispered the next sentence. "Do you know a person who can do that?" They tried to imagine what it might be like to turn into an animal, and basically wiggled with delight. "I'd want to be a doggy! Or no! Wait! A bird so I cold fly!" They pictured it; soaring over the countryside, free and easy, and then remembered that they would be learning how to fly on a broom too! "Oh I totally forgot about brooms!"
Trix agreed with Emma. "Or maybe for potions, as to where the ingriedents are collected from. I know there has to be ingredients galore in there!" They were nearing the edge of the grounds so Trix stopped and looked around. They found that it had started snowing again, and Trix shivered in her coat. "I looked everywhere and even asked a professor, but no one had those pocket heaters. They're everywhere in Muggle stores. I could use one of them now... Maybe I'll call mum! Oh wait... I mean owl her."
Trix chuckled. They were still getting used to their new life; many things that seemed normal to Trix seemed to be unheard of in the wizarding world, or there was a magical equivalent. So far, though, they hadn't learned a spell for warming up your pockets.
