the way I learnt is "I before E, except after C"
so by default, any word (thief, field, piece) has the I before the E, but if it comes after a C (perceive) then the E comes first - obviously there are exceptions to the rule because English be like that, but the vast majority of the time this works
also, how is everyone? I haven't been around here in ages haha

i before e except after c kind of works only on words with the clear /ee/ sound. not gonna lie, in my opinion i don’t think it’s a very useful rule because there are more than just a few exceptions to it.
