Cain had time enough to find his name card and pick it up to inspect it closer before he saw a familiar boy swoop over to him. Of course he was here, Draven fit in much better here than he did. "Draven? I-..." He couldn't say his practiced greeting before he was steered to another table, looking back nervously to his empty spot. Was he allowed to switch tables? His mother might be mad, not to mention the hosts who'd done all the seating arrangements in the first place. He was honestly too relieved to see someone he knew and liked here to truly protest.
"I think there's going to be other people there, eventually." He let himself be sat down at the new table regardless, setting his name card in front of himself as if it belonged there in the first place. Cain tilted his head when Draven said he wouldn't be sitting with her. Was there some rude girl back at that table? It didn't occur to him that his friend meant his overprotective mother. She just wanted what was best even if it was hard on him. She was certainly fluent in the ways of purebloods, someday he hoped to be good enough to do that. Although watching the adults made him think he was seeing some kind of stage play, they were all wearing masks. There was even some interesting card tricks happening.
He could already feel himself breathing easier and the tightness in his chest dissipated, though it didn't show on his face or in his actions other than a slow breath being released. Cain spotted that chocolate, another glance over to find his tall friend blocking the view of his mother's hawk-like stare. Well. His small hand crawled across the table and stole a piece of chocolate to nibble on. He needed it for his nerves. Finally he looked around the table at his new dinner mates, noticing a girl with long white hair and fair skin first, like he couldn't help it. She reminded him of an ornate, finely carved queen chess piece and he had to tear his eyes away to see the rest of the guests. A very short boy, he was pretty sure he saw him before around Yule but he hadn't caught his name. Cody sort of stuck out and there were two of him now.
"Hello..." He added quickly with a nod to everyone at the table. Another girl joined their table, she was soon wiping off her make-up once she was settled in her seat. Other than that, everyone looked dressed properly while he felt like he was in a costume. Maybe they felt like that too. Cain continued eating his chocolate, lighting up a little at that suggestion but immediately feeling guilty for even thinking of leaving his mother.
"Could we get away with that? Where would we go?"There were probably more places around this massive castle of a home to go. Interesting places.

| ── | for.weddings.and.funerals ![]() | ─ | 𝕸uch better now that you're here" Draven said, giving Juni a warm smile. Maybe he was hallucinating, but the banquet hall seemed to have gotten brighter when she'd walked in. The knot of nervousness which had taken up residence in his chest and steadily grown bigger throughout the week in anticipation of the ball now loosened just a tad. "I must admit, the days dragged on without you, Ms. Kelly. If I had known you'd be here, I would have worn my good suit." A smirk tugged at the corner of Draven's lips at the appearance of makeup wipes. "The eyeshadow wasn't consensual?"
| ── |
| ── | It seemed as if her entire outfit had been put together against her will, and knowing her, she'd fought everything from the intricate braids to the shiny gloss on her nails. He wouldn't have been surprised if they'd petrified the girl to get her in the dress. "You're beautiful," he said, handing her another makeup wipe. She'd gotten everything save for a spot of blush on her right cheek. "I don't think that mirror does you justice." Draven's hand, which had been resting on Cain's back from the near shepherding he'd done a few minutes before now went to lie on the table. Inches away from Juniper's. The boy pretended his heart hadn't started beating faster. If he moved the tiniest bit, their fingers would be touching. Would that even be appropriate? Would she pull back? Thankfully, the waiter spared him of the choice, coming back with his tea. Draven had always appreciated the wizarding china. This particular cup had a flower design painted on it, and when he lifted it to his lips, they bloomed, spreading out across ivory white, black and gray petals unfurling as if to show off. "I was thinking we go up to the tower" Draven said, taking a sip of his tea and making a face. At home, he sometimes managed to slip drops of his father's rum in the bitter liquid. It instantly elevated what was essentially boiled water with leaves. Abbadon didn't even lock the liquor cabinet, mostly because of Iris. Back when she'd been a teenager, he would have rather her drinking at home that getting a call she'd passed out in a bush somewhere. Now she was dead, so Draven supposed it didn't matter quite as much. "I bet the view is beautiful from up there....plus, it'll take the parents a while to get to us. I hear climbing up stairs drunk isn't fun" |

As the first guests arrived, Opeila started to relax. There were no weird looks shot at her, in fact she was greeted as if she belonged to them. Occasionally she exchanged looks with Lysander. It wasn't as if she was not angry with him anymore, but she had decided not to let it ruin their sort of friendship completely. If anything, it had only reminded Opeila painfully that this was not her family. Lysander not her brother. They were people, maybe even comparatively friendly and modern, but from a world that Opeila couldn't call her own, even if she looked like it. And that she did, a quick glimpse at a mirror in a corridor had left her surprised at how... well, grown up she looked.
She was definitely no longer that scared twelve year old child that had been thrown to the feet of Lady Elora Winter, but began to look like a young woman.
A young boy and a woman who was probably his mother soon approached the two of them, whom Opeila vaguely recognized. That kid was in her house, right? A new first year, she believed to recall him from this year's sorting ceremony. They were greeted and complimented politely and Opeila sent them a gracious smile. "I'm happy to return the compliment, thank you for your most appreciated attendance.", Opeila responded, attempting to imitate Hilja Virtanen's careful choice of words. "We hope that you will enjoy the evening, the banquet will open shortly.", Lysander added, bowing his head, wearing his most charming smile.
When the woman introduced her son and mentioned that he was going to Hogwarts too, Opeila's gaze returned to Cain. "Yes, I believe we are both in Slytherin, but we didn't have the pleasure to meet yet.", she responded, smiling at the younger boy, "Thank you for coming." "We would be very much obliged if you would forward our kind regards to your father.", Lysander added.
Both of them nodded politely when the Corvus' moved on and Opeila exhaled relieved. "That was just fine, Opeila. You fit in better than you think, you do make a great heir to the Crane bloodline." Opeila rolled her eyes. "Would you please not try to argue with me tonight? I'm actually having not the worst time right now so please-" Lysander interrupted her. "Well, then be a good host and greet your other guests." He nodded into the direction of a boy who sat alone at a table, whom Opeila recognized as Felix Kolbeck from the Beckett summer ball and a blackhaired boy a little further at the same table. The table where she would sit as well.
"Why don't you do it? I don't even know them.", Opeila protested quietly. "Could you at least try to be nice? Also, that's a lie, I saw you talk to him at the Beckett Ball. The other boy's name is Miles Thatcher. Didn't you learn the guest list?" Opeila sighed. "So? I still don't know them. Also, why should I try..." "Really want me to give you a reason?" "No..." Lysander nudged her gently. "Fine!", Opeila hissed annoyed and turned to walk towards the two boys, forcing herself to smile again.
"Hello", she greeted them, "Thank you so much for coming. I am Opeila", she added, looking at the dark haired boy.Once everyone found their seat (OOC: Don't worry, you can still join, just getting the banquet going), Lord Virtanen rose to his feet. "We are honored to welcome all of you to our home, so we can welcome the new year together and we are very grateful that so many have traveled far to be here tonight. We wish you all a nice evening, our waiters will be happy to fulfill your every request. The banquet is now open.", he announced, taking his seat next to Hilja, who truly looked stunning in the black dress that matched her hair. Lysander had already engaged in conversation with his neighbors.

@Cain Corivs @Juniper KellyAnnoyed, he attempted to put his right arm around Cain's neck, knowing Cain was probably a little, if not too much taller than Cody was. He thanked Pea again, mentally, for the compliment on his Jacket, glared at Juniper (still happy that she liked his jacket). Whatever happened, Cody felt a little embarrased that Juni's mother was here, and Cody had gave her a big ol pushie of yoda when Cody went to Juniper's house.
He struck a pose, trying to look both adorable and intimidating at the same time. So, he looked at Draven and Cain, whispering softly enough for both to hear, but not anyone else. "Watch me steal Dad's drink. I swear, it WILL work. I had beer before! It tasted just like a cake pop!"
Cody indeed said so, and without actually acting like he was afraid to do so, he walked behind Jack as calm as he could appear in his mid panic attack. His dad saw him, but shot him a look that said that he should go back to where he was, and learn to behave. To follow instructions. Trying to make sure the two boys he was talking to was paying attention, Cody grinned. Shot them a thumbs up, and attempted to reach out for the beer dad had out.Cody attempts to steal beer from Jack.

The girl who had attended the Beckett's ball had decided to greet him, and Felix nodded his head towards her. "My mother didn't give me a choice, so I wouldn't thank me for it. You look nice, though. Opeila, I wouldn't forget a name like that." It reminded him of Ophelia, a Shakespearean heroine, he was certain she had heard it before, though, so he didn't bother mentioning it. "Thank you for the food." One would think Felix would get better at socializing after a certain amount of time in the pureblood community, but he was still fighting against his mother's desires.
Across the banquet hall, someone had decided to approach him. Felix caught a flash of blonde hair from the corner of his eye and groaned. Of course the strange gremlin child had decided to approach him, why couldn't he just stay at his own table? Felix half-glared in the table's direction and then did a double-take when he realized that Cody was still sitting there. He felt the blood from his face drain as he glanced towards the blonde who was identical to the little nightmare; a weirdo dressed in a sumo suit. Dear Merlin, a twin? Why the hell was there TWO of them?! A scowl formed on Felix's lips as he glanced down at the devil spawn with distaste. "Nope." He said, pushing back from his chair, "I don't know why the hell you're dressed like an oversized marshmallow, but I won't be associating with the devil's twin." He aimed his attention towards Opeila, "Sorry, I just gotta get away from this kid."
Unfortunately for Felix, his mother had been keeping a close eye on her son during this exchange. "Felix Klas Kolbeck. Sit back down." Linnéa Kolbeck warned him from her table, before pushing back from her own seat so she could hiss into his ear. A difficult task, considering her son was a good five inches taller than her. "Du var oförskämd mot den där konstiga pojken. (You were rude to that weird boy.)"
"Ja, det var min avsikt. (Yes, that was my intention.)" Was Felix's response, earning him a glare from his mother. He would be getting an earful when they returned home. He looked around before leaning over to lower his voice. "Hans bror är en jävla stalker. Jag pratar inte med honom. (His brother is a fucking stalker. I'm not talking to him.)"
"Använd inte den typen av fult språk. Du skämmer ut mig. Sätt dig bara ner någon annanstans och sluta göra en scen. (Do not use that type of foul language. You are embarrassing me. Just sit down somewhere else and stop making a scene.)" She ordered her son, before casting a nervous glance towards her own table. The short-statured blonde tried to laugh it off. "Teenagers, fighting over the simplest things. I remember when I was that age..."
There was an empty chair across the banquet hall that Felix set his sights on. It did not have his name, but since when had he ever cared about manners? So, he stole the place setting of some chick named Deirdre Corvus... "Corvus? Sweet last name." He mumbled to himself, pushing the name setting over as if this would hide his transgression.
Cain and Draven were likely having a perfectly pleasant conversation, and Felix had no intention to butt into it, but he couldn't help himself the moment he overheard them mentioning they would be sneaking away. "Where are we going?" Yes, we, because he was coming with them. "Cool suit, by the way." He gestured towards Draven's black attire. "Your family let you dress yourself I assume. Must be nice. What I wouldn't give to have my leather jacket right about now." He reached a hand up to ruffle his white hair, brushing the gel loose with his fingertips and allowing the strands to fall over his forehead. "I'm Felix, by the way, Felix Kolbeck." He mentioned to both of the boys. He would play nice, offer a friendly human smile, let them lead him away from this nightmare, then he could find a nice secluded area to be alone.

Cain straightened his seated position, casually watching the social tension between Draven and the girl who'd removed her make-up. He must know her from somewhere, were they friends? It looked like something else, something he wouldn't understand so he left it be and instead watched his friend receive tea. What a great idea. He was about to ask for some for himself when the shorter wizard boy with a letter-man jacket hooked his arm around his shoulders, successively pulling Cain into a slouching position.
"To the tower you say..." He trailed off as he tried to continue making conversation until Cody told him he'd be getting alcohol! That was for adults and it was bad for kids! It was now up to Cain to do everything in his power to stop him.
"Excuse me, waiter sir?" He called to get a staff member's attention. "I just wanted to ask for some black tea if you have any... and also..." He leaned up and whisper to the man about Cody trying to sneak some beer from his father.
Oh Cain was watching Cody all right, he even gave him a thumb's up in return as he pointed him out to the waiter. He should know better than to get into that bad stuff. Cain made up his mind to never drink the stuff, he like his brain cells where they were thank-you-very-much. Plenty of potions and spells in the world already messed with your memory enough as it was. Of course he didn't begrudge his mother when he saw her sipping champagne with the other adults. Speaking of Deirdre Corvus, wasn't she coming closer and looking directly at the new older boy sitting at the table across from them?
Yes. She was looking right at him and not smiling. "Accio Dinner card." She murmured, the card Felix carelessly tossed zipped right into her hand.
The white haired boy was complimenting Draven on his stylish suit, of course, his friend had all the style, charm and poise. Someday it would rub off on him, he hoped. Cain was a little nervous to return the greeting, but he couldn't say no to such a friendly human smile like that.
"H-Hello." But now he regretted it when he saw his mother narrow her eyes at this Felix Kolbeck. The seat thief.
Deirdre sashayed her way to the table and stood next to Felix with a bright grin as she put on a saccharine tone. "Who is this handsome little man sitting in my chair? Ohhhhh, look at you!" She crooned and reached in to pinch his cheek, whether he was too stunned to duck her hand or not was up to him. "Oh I get it! You took my chair so you could be closer to your girlfriend over here, is that it? Which one is she? Any one of these lovely ladies would be so lucky, wouldn't they? Don't even get up, I'll just take your seat." She patted him on the head, unless he tried to evade her of course, then gave him an unsubtle wink before moving on to where Felix had been before. A calculated mom embarrassment move on her part.
Cain was trying to shrink under the table when his tea arrived. He hoped the grown-ups got distracted very soon...

@Cain Corivs @Juniper KellyFreddy coughed as haughtily as he could to imitate those who might've been a pureblood in his opinion. Just when Cody and Freddy were about to do anything, even to take a drink, Cody began to feel a little suspicious. Cain was a prefect, wasn't he? Why would Cody be do anything that would set him off from his reckless ways of tattling. Tattling was so four years old, just begging for a candy it seemed. What possible reward could a prefect get if they spied on people?
Cody took that in consideration, still going for a bottle of beer, wanting to so badly receive one, to have his first sip of a liquid that his dad said tasted good. Something his dad saved for date nights of course, with his own mother, but, what about his new father?
That in mind, Cody decided to show cowardliness, and turn, his head hung low. He rushed towards the door, his tears streaming down his face. How could he ever prove his bravery if he was going to cause a disgrace and a scene at such a pureblood event?
His father would see this, run after Cody, and smile, try to comfort him. Ask him what was wrong, but of course, Cody would say nothing. He wanted something so badly he acted like a fool. Why in the world is being an idiot a thing?
Freddy saw Felix of course, but he seemed to be trying to avoid Cody's creepy doppleganger. Dressed in the finest yet plumpest, sumo suit, and he called Freddy something not so hurtful, as Cody called him worse before. "Who. Are. You. I asked who you were.
Talking to those at his table and directly to @Opeila Winters
Miles found himself not sitting with his parents which was rather welcomed. They would say that he didn't sit up straight enough, that his napkin wasn't folded precisely so, that his smile needed to be less, that his eye contact needed to be more. There was always SOMETHING with them.
Luckily, they would have been proud to know that he sat down at his place seating in time for the banquet to be officially announced by their host and the food began to get passed around. He looked around at those in attendance at his table. There were some he might have recognized from his time at the Summer Camp and Fall trip to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Scotland, but he couldn't put a name with the face. Oh how his parents would be disappointed! No, it wasn't his function, but if this was some high society than he should know who they were!
"Ten galleons to anyone who can get us out of here early to start a quidditch game out on the grounds," Miles said to the group and smiled a little. It was a joke, as he didn't have his broom with him, and he smiled a little until his eyes fell on one of the hosts. "My apologies," he said sincerely, hoping she didn't think him rude. Truly he was just trying to lighten the mood a little and get some conversation going. "I did not mean to offend. It was gracious of you to invite us to your home."

"My father never let's himself get drunk, but I honestly doubt he'd care where I go. My mom, however, would be stumbling up the stairs with her glass trying to find me. She cant resist drinks sometimes." She said lightly, shrugging and pausing the waiter. "Hey, do you have fruit punch? It's juice, but really good? I didn't really see it but..." She was delighted to find they had punch, and she sat with her hands around her glass. Every now and then she risked a glance at Draven, but always looked away. She glanced up as her cousin tried to steal a drink, and Juniper huffed. "yo, cody, where you going?" Her cousin turned around with tears streaming down is face and Juniper recoiled. Why was he so weird? One minute he's all "hey lookat what Im gonna do!" then he's like "AHHH" and "wahhhHHhHHhHh" He made zero sense to Juniper and Juniper wasn't going to try and understand his ways.
She turned around and saw a women, glaring at a boy with a poisonous grin. Guessing by Cain looking like he wanted to shrink and get swallowed by a hole, that was Cain's mom. Juniper, who had just received her food, felt the sudden urge to say something to this lady. Something snappy and snarky. Her voice picked up an icy tone. "Yeah, well you ca-" But before she finished, she shoved a spoonful of soup into her mouth to keep herself from going on. She sputtered and swallowed. "Hot hot hot." Her eye watered slightly, cursing herself from not blowing on it before she ate it.
Draven said something but she didn't pay attention. She was too busy trying not to spit out the steaming hot stew in her mouth. She eventually just swallowed and noticed Draven leaving. She stood up and followed him after seeing if anyone else was coming.
She walked out and by default, looked up to the sky. "It's nice out. I like it. " She said, to herself and to Draven. "I've always preferred being outside than inside. You're a lot freer out here."
