Terrible puns aside, the next exchange of spells was... just as confusing as the one before that. Apparently @Julian Pritchard's mystical magical spell-repelling shield (or anti-magnet power) was starting to wear off, because the jet of flames that @Illowy Magnard sent at him managed to hit their target - barely, as he had almost managed to avoid them, but still. They caught his elbow, leaving his sleeve on fire.

@Starlee Kennedy was not as lucky as her partner. Or maybe not as focused? Between her bursts of laughter and continuing banter, it was no wonder if there was not much attention left to spare for taking aim. Once again, the well-cast Knockback Jinx veered away from Julian, coming closer to hit Illowy than anyone else, although the older Slytherin (again) managed to gracefully dodge the surprise attack from her partner. How often, Dee wondered, would something like this count as accidental, before it started seeming intentional?

Lucky for the Vipers, Julian seemed no less distracted than Starlee. Instead of giving Illowy a nasty cold like he had intended, the spell seemed to suddenly curve towards @Martyna Romero instead... but even that missed by a landslide, no real danger of hitting his partner. Which left Martyna, ignored by the Slytherins' attacks, free to focus and land a solid Knockback Jinx on Starlee.

Dee cocked her head to one side, watching. Despite (or perhaps because of) the terrible aim of the participants, the Badgers were actually holding up rather well. Perhaps they would manage to turn this duel around?

"Flipendo!" Starlee shouted, her fake scrunched up as she fought off the final bought of her laughter. Of course, her attempted 'serious' composure hadn't seemed to have helped very much, as her spell, once again, veered wildly off course and made a second attempt to hit Illowy. 'What is going ON? Does the tickling charm effect me that badly?' she wondered. She was loosing confidence, trying to hold herself together. At least in her last two vs. two duel it really wasn't so much her aim as it was her opponents dodging skills, but what on earth was happening here that was causing such misfires?

This time, she couldn't even bring herself to say anything to Illowy as an apology, she was too embarrassed about this entire situation. Of course, she was then hit squarely again with another Flipendo from Martyna. It made sense, Starlee was the weaker target, but Starlee was beginning to feel a bit lightheaded. Just like the chess combat duel, she had to keep on going.

After spending the last few minutes focusing on dodging, Julian felt he absolutely needed to cast a spell. What if the Slytherins stopped seeing him as a threat and focused all of their attention on Martyna? Or what if Martyna decided he wasn't pulling his weight?

Perhaps the thought was making him a little too anxious, because what happened next had no other explanation. In his mind, he'd perfectly aligned his wand towards Illowy as he uttered the incantation for the Curse of the Bogeys. In reality, he must've been pointing elsewhere, because the spell drew a trajectory that brought it much closer to Martyna than either Slytherin. Though, thankfully, not close enough to hit.

"Sorry," he muttered, wincing slightly; a wince that transfomed into a grimace of pain as his sleeve was lit by Illowy's Incendio Duo.

"Ow ow ow," he shook out his elbow, trying to put out the flame, and directing an accusatory look in the direction of the older Slytherin. He knew he'd signed up for this, and he should've been paying more attention and tried to dodge, so he couldn't hold his current state against her, but it was hard not to be a little bit peeved when someone set you on fire.

Honestly, what was going on with everyone missing their casts like this. It was like something she’d ever seen before. Pritchard made some poor attempt at casting CoB at her, which she didn’t even have to attempt to dodge, and it missed its new target as well; good on teammate. Best to give him an example of decent aim.

Perhaps she should have felt at least a little bad setting the lad’s sleeve on fire, but someone on this platform needed to be made an example of. This was a duel, not Charms class. This wasn’t the time to be tentative and cautious to try to refrain from hurting friends or classmates as much as possible. You sign up knowing you’ll probably leave with injuries; and it’s best to make your peace with that before you step up.

The Huffle boy shot her a look at assured her he wasn’t happy about her cast, and all she could do was smirk at him, “It’s not a dance, poppet. This is a real, big kid duel. Ye can get on with it now.” She goaded.

Pale eyes flickered to her own teammate as she tried to cast… of which change its target as well. Thankfully, Illowy managed a graceful evasion. Starlee wasn’t as lucky, being squarely hit by her own friend with a Flippendo, “Hold it together, Kennedy.” Some odd mixture of an encouragement and a warning as the older student returned to focus to the duel.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

This was starting to be a little bit funny. Starlee tried to hit her partner for the second time in two rounds, and Julian's spell - this time directed at Illowy, veered off course and headed straight for Tina, who leaned back on her heels to get out of the way. All she could manage was a slightly amused smile at her partner, who was also on fire. Cool.

"Heyyy, it's okay! Don't worry, it's not real fire." She was saying this to soothe him, but in all honesty, she wasn't sure how functionally different magical fire was from the muggle stuff. They were pretty good at healing at Hogwarts, so maybe getting burned wasn't a concern for the nurses. Martyna turned her attention to the duel. One of them was going to have to deal some damage this round. "Flipendo!"

The spell hit Starlee just where she'd aimed.

It was almost as if the Badgers could smell weakness. @Starlee Kennedy had taken a few hits in the course of this duel, courtesy of @Martyna Romero. If she took one more, maybe two, it would likely be enough to knock her out, so the Hufflepuffs went for the kill.

Both Martyna and @Julian Pritchard proved their solid casting skills again, both choosing Flipendo for its pure force. On the other side of the field, Starlee had clearly foreseen this turn of events. She wasn't even trying to cast a spell in return, ready to focus solely on dodging the spells coming at her. Yet, it would prove fruitless. As questionable as the Badgers' aim had been before, as impeccable it was now. They almost seemed to anticipate her movements, both their attacks aimed precisely where she would be a moment later. For a second, it seemed like she might be able to evade Julian's spell, but when Martyna's attack hit, the force pushed her off-balance, allowing Julian's Flipendo to land as well.

Dee started forward, ready to call for a break when she saw Starlee swaying from the impact. But rescue came in form of @Illowy Magnard: The older duellist, master of the field so far, had taken a break from attacking the Badgers to provide her younger partner some assistance. A healing spell, cast in the nick of time, provided Starlee some much needed relief: Just enough to stay on her feet.

Her heart beating faster with the suspense of the duel, Dee stepped back again. Unconsciously, she had pushed her weight forward onto her toes, making herself a little taller, the unexpected turns of the duel pulling her in. This duel was a close fight, and in no way decided yet.

She knew she was a sitting duck. She was feeling tired and it was clear to see on her face. Exhaustion from laughing so much combined with a few well-aimed flipendo's would do that to a person. She knew she would be the target - two vs. one was much better odds, so she readied herself to dodge. But alas, exhaustion seemed to completely overtake her, and her attempt to dodge the oncoming attacks failed. She waltzed right into Tina's spell, sending her backward right into Julian's. She would have almost fainted if it hadn't been for her partner, who had also foreseen these events, and took a moment to heal her. It wasn't much, but it was enough to keep her standing, and that was all that mattered.

"Thanks Illowy..." she muttered, rubbing her shoulder. This wasn't over yet.

Illowy may not be the type to come off as being friendly, much less the type that wouldn’t look out for herself first and foremost; but she was hardly about to let Starlee of the hook this early in game. They were just getting started.

When she saw their opponents take aim at her teammate, Illowy didn’t waste time aiming a third spell at the battered Second Year. In response to the girl’s tired thanks, she smirked, ”Yer not skipping out on me this early in the match, Kennedy.” She teased, “Eyes forward and focus. You’ve got this, just keep yer feet on the ground.” The plate girl tried to encourage.

Just for a moment, it looked like they might have the upper hand. Starlee seemed to walk right into the pair of Flipendos fired off by the badger team, and even Dee seemed to think the game was over for the younger Slytherin, but alas- despite every spell-gone-wrong that Starlee had fired at her, Illowy didn't let her partner down, and Starlee struggled to her feet after a well cast healing spell.

"Dammit, that was close..." Tina muttered, so that hopefully only Julian could hear. At least he wasn't on fire anymore. "We need to learn to do that too, right?"

It felt like a small eternity before the fire on his sleeve was out. Julian wanted to stop and assess whether it had done any serious damage, but he couldn't think of a way to do so that would not leave him vulnerable to the Slytherins across the platform, so he simply tried to ignore the stinging sensation on his wrist and focused on casting yet another spell in the direction of the Slytherins. With the knowledge that they'd already landed a couple of hits on Starlee, it was only natural to shift his attention to her, but he was still not quite prepared to see both his and Martyna's spells land.

"Are you alright?" He couldn't help the worried question as the girl seemed about ready to faint for a few seconds. At least until her teammate intervened with a healing spell. (Unluckily for them, though Julian still felt a smidge of relief.) The change in her demeanour was immediately noticeable and Julian cast an impressed look at Illowy.

"We definitely have to," he told Martyna.
