2021, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 4

Autumn coughed one last time as her spell made the magical fog disappear. Finally, she could breathe. She sighed. Okay, problem number one was solved. She could feel the magical wind begin dying down as well, so problem number two was also pretty much done. The fire, no matter how painful it had been, was also clearly dying down, and that had been problem number three.

The only problem with all her problems being gone was that there wasn't anything left to distract her from Dmitri's words. And fine, maybe the middle of a duel hadn't been the best place to monologue, but she was still a second away from telling the duelling captain exactly where he could shove his stupid laughter before she was immediately flung across the duelling podium onto the ground.

At least she could get some satisfaction from Opeila's spell missing her as she was knocked down. Except it had hit Callista instead. Autumn wanted to punch a wall.

Right, so… At least they were still alive?

On the bright side, the fog was gone - good job, Autumn! - and, uh… yeah, that’s about the only good thing. Was luck on the Slytherins’ side, or was it just talent and experience? Dmitri’s spell was even brighter than usual, and the force of it sent Autumn flying. Immediately, Callista turned her head, instinctively checking to see if she was okay. She didn’t pass out, right? Or like… get a concussion? Is she okay? What if she hit her head? Is the floor hard enough to break her head? What if she broke a limb? Wait no, I mean her ribs? What if it’s so bad the nurses can’t fix it? What if-

Oof. Callista should probably have been focusing less on Autumn and more on her opponents. Opeila’s spell caught her by surprise, the stray blue light catching on her arm. Not this one again. It was such a classic spell, and so painful. Last time, this spell was the one that took her out of the game and cost them the victory. Callista bit her lip, frustrated. Why did they have to be paired against them?

No. It was just a spell, like any other. And yeah, maybe the Slytherins had more experience, but it was still her fault if they lost. It doesn’t matter if it was unfair, she would give her best… Because if she didn’t, it would haunt her for ages. If she didn’t give it her all, it would be completely and utterly her fault if they lost.

So… she just had to keep fighting. It’s okay if Autumn gets knocked out and she’s the only one facing these two. It’s okay if she suffers a painful knockout, and they end up losing anyway. She just… had to keep going. No matter what happens.

Callista would attempt to send a green sparks charm flying the viper's way, targeting Dmitri specifically who was deemed the bigger threat for reason Alan would fully understand. It seemed scary in a way, how well practiced the duellist seemed and how secure he was in his casting. As Autumn struggled to get up she was hit by two strong gusts of wind that would angrily unleash their wrath on the badger girl, both sent by Opeila and Dmitri. They would send the girl toppling to the ground, like a house of card that had been grasped by a whiff of air. "Hold it," Alan would alarm the duellists as a pair of medic students would levitate the unconscious student out of harms way to get her treated as necessary and Alan could not help but feel bad for Autumn who had fought bravely. As she had been carried away Alan would give a nod to the three remaining students, signalling them to continue with their duel. "Continue," he would allow, as he continued to watch the following event carefully. Though Alan would be a fool to think that Callista could pull this off on her own, he would nonetheless believe in the girl to make the Slytherin's work hard for their victory and possibly give the vipers a taste of their own medicine. Even if it was not looking well for Hufflepuff, Alan believed they had proven to earn some respect.

Well, that's just great.

Now, Callista's the only one to face Dmitri and Opeila. Well... let's just try to at least leave a mark on one of them? Usually, she was pretty good at being able to see the bright side. But was there really a bright side to this? ... It'll be over before I know it?

Without Autumn by her side, the older Slytherins seemed even more intimidating. The odds weren't exactly stacked in her favor, either. In the course of this entire duel, they had managed to land one spell. Just one. Maybe the deity in charge of granting luck would take pity on the second year? There wasn't anything she could do other than try her best, anyway. Silently, she decided to work harder next time, to learn more spells and become a better duellist.

The best way to avoid thinking about this terrible situation was to think about something else! These Slytherins really like their wind jinx. It's such a shame I can't learn it until I'm a third year; it seems like such a helpful spell. Gosh, what do I do now?

From this point on, it was pretty much all luck, anyway. Maybe I should practice praying to the god of luck from now on...

"You said it, not me." Dmitri would face Opeila, the cold glint in his eyes finally back after being freed from the tickling curse. "I am the strongest. Bully or not, you or any other duelist cannot compare to me. You'd do well to remember that."

Refocusing on the task at hand, the Slytherin captain cast a Ventus at the same time as his partner did, cleanly knocking the poor Hufflepuff duelist out in one fell swoop.

They barely stood a chance.

With a devilish smirk, Dmitri turned to his partner. "You were saying?" He referred to her previous comment of him trying to prove something.

As Autumn got back on her feet, an annoying consequence of the Flipendo sent her way, two gusts of wind brought her back down, and her body kind of just gave up. She'd been set on fire, pushed away by wind, knocked down by a magical force, covered in fog until she could barely see, and it made her want to laugh that this was honestly her limit. Two relatively strong gusts of wind, sure, and they were certainly nuisances, but this was really the final nail in the coffin?

In a weird kind of way, she'd known this was her last round. They had clearly been working towards eliminating her before Callista, and know she felt kind of guilty, because she was leaving Callista alone on the podium, with an audience, faced against two older students who had taken down her teammate in what, a matter of minutes? She just wished she'd done more damage before she left.

The chances of Callista winning by herself was, in all honesty, almost comical, but Autumn hoped that she would at least put up a bit of a fight. Yada-yada, something about how that's what being a Hufflepuff was all about, and Autumn honestly didn't care enough to think anymore, because she could feel herself fall further into unconsciousness, and she'd like to skip to the part when she woke up in the hospital wing and walked her walk of shame to her dorm, which she would then refuse to leave for 2-5 hours as she sulked.

Autumn heard the moderator call out, and let herself drift.

Opeila felt a tickle in her stomach. An urge, a desire to throw a match into the dried grass and put Dmitri back into his place. The young girl stood up to his cold glance, daring him to go further. She was but a third year, but if looks could kill...

... I'll remind you the next time I find you crying on the Astronomy Tower.

As if on command both the vipers' spells flew toward Autumn and knocked the Hufflepuff off her feet.

Alan was still overseeing the duel, but worried about the girl that had already been carried away from a few med wing volunteers. He could not help but keep an eye on Dmitri knowing he would be ruthless in his path to achieve victory and his worries would prove right as he send a knockback jinx hurling at the girl, catching her by the shoulder as pain would erupt at the spot. Alan would assume this girl was about one hit away from unconsciousness and as Opeila would send another, yet same jinx the badger's way, Alan found himself hoping she would miss the girl. Simply because he wanted the girl to have a chance to avenge her partner and land a few hits if possible. The jinx had a deep colour and would surely have been powerful, but relieved, Alan would see it sail past the girl as she was safe, for now.

Callista had her own strategy in mind, no longer was she able to rely on a team dynamic but has become the sole target of the vipers that were ready to strike and feast on the victory. But the badger would not let them win that easily, she would decide to make it worth their but also her time as she decided to struggle and fight until the end. With a swish of her wand she'd set ablaze Dmitri, catching him at his non-dominant hand as the flames momentarily searched for any burning material but found none. The flames wouldn't stick to him, but the burst of fire had certainly caused some damage to the boy's precious skin.
