A new year meant a new round of duelling. It was Willow's second year being a vice-captain of the Hufflepuff Duelling team but the beginning of duelling season really never got old. Even though she was just moderating the duel before her, she was exhilarated. Her blood was pumping, a wide grin was plastered on her face (though she tried to minimize it to be the very serious moderator that she was), and her hands were even shaking a little bit. It was an honor and a privilege to not only be a part of this esteemed sport, but to be able to have a position like moderator in the first place. Especially presiding over what could be a very interesting duel.

On Gryffindor's side there was a powerhouse team of Alan Vanes and Galton Lansdale. Willow knew Alan personally, and knew that he could be a fierce competitor. He was an amazing wizard and someone Willow admired as an elder student from her first year (aka he's very old and Willow thinks he's cool). Galton was a year above her and she had duelled against him last year. Which... did not turn out in the way she wanted. She had experienced his casting ability personally and it was a memory she couldn't help but shiver at.

On the Ravenclaw side, she didn't really know the duellists. But that didn't mean they weren't a pair to keep an eye on. Phaedra is a fifth year, and Aida a third year. Both powerful up and coming witches that had rightfully earned their places on the duelling piste. Willow had never seen their duelling abilities in action, and it was something that was particularly exciting for her. Especially at the possibility of ending up on the piste with them someday.

With the four upper year duellists taking their stances on the piste, Willow started her job as moderator. "Duellists! Audience people! Welcome to the one of the first duels of this brand new year. Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw, match 1." She gave a moment for there to be whatever applause and shouts people felt like they needed to give. "For the duel today we have Gryffindor's Alan Vanes and Galton Lansdale, against Ravenclaw's Phaedra Stavrou and Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood. Duellists! Take your stances!" The energy was building up in Willow's core, working its way through her entire being. "You all know the rules. Are you ready?" She looked at each one of them as she raised her arm dramatically in the air. "Let the duel commence!" The last word was punctuated with all of the energy that had built up in Willow's body as she brought down her hand in a dramatic slash through the air.

Alan was excited, really excited. His heart was beating against his rib cage as he walked up to the piste. It would be his first real duel and he was not sure how capable he would be in this situation. As he walked over to Galton's and his side of the stage, he would send Tiger over to sit with Willow and of course the feline obliged, knowing better than to get caught in the crossfire of a few duellists. Alan did not know Galton too well, but he would consider him a great guy, except for the fact that he had nearly puked on the boy when they had first met each other after eating too many chocolate frogs. "I hope you went easy on the chocolate frogs today," he would deliver a friendly jab at the younger boy, not sure if the other Gryffindor would even remember the spectacle in their common room. For sure it must have been eventful.

He would also eye his opponents curiously when they arrived and like them would step onto their half of the piste. He did not know them well, though he recognized the older girl from seeing her during some of their shared classes. The younger girl was someone he recognized from the previous year, from when they were challenged by Kit Paine and, ex-prefect, Thomas Lestrange. He would however recognize neither by name, or well he knew their names from the list but would not be able to solve the puzzle of what name belonged to which person.

Alan was however confident in both Galton and himself and was sure the two would emerge from this victorious. He was happy to see that Willow was the one moderating this duel and he would have probably hugged her, but wondered if that would count as a bribe to the referee so instead he would just give her a wave and a soft smile. "I'm sure we got this," he would let Galton know as he let his eyes wander over their opponents once more, nodding at them in a sort of greeting, before he took his wand from his hip holster and got ready.

The year of Galton the Glorious and Meenauh the Mighty was over and the Year of Galton the Glorious and Alan the Astounding was beginning. To be quite frank, Galton was sad to have lost his old partner. A wicked witch, a supreme caster and a rather perfect partner, @Meenauh Silmataurea would be missed dearly. In many ways she had shaped the small boy into the duelist he was now. But, he would not fail her! With the Astounding by his side, he could take on the world.

On their teams side of the stage, he turned to face his partner. The boy quipped at him about chocolate frogs. "It was mostly sticky caramel topped off with some stringmints..." He replied in a matter of a fact tone. "Gotta be fresh!" He added.

The hour of spell slinging was soon at hand. Galton primed his wand in his right, readying his muscles and mind alike. "We do!" He replied to his partners encouragement. His attention shifted now to the opponents. He'd lost to raven's last year, and this lot seemed to be just as dangerous. While he didn't know them directly, he'd seen the faces around the school. It would be a fun match.

Aida nodded to her duelling partner, ascending to the piste. A pair of targets stepped up, seeming to Aida like puppets just as much as she felt like a marionette herself. One opponent, apparently Galton, was on about food… one of Aida’s least favorite subjects after having been subjected to some untold amount of tainted, mind-altering food during her time at Hogwarts. Then turning to the other boy, Aida recognized him as Alan Vanes, from the earlier event hosted by Lestrange and company. Aida had always been curious about him. Though from his entrance he acted like any other boy at Hogwarts, there was some peculiar… not twinkle, not vibe, not… no, there was simply... something about him. The albino just didn’t know what. Would this match reveal the nature of this unknown trait that tickled her mind like some unseen creature?

With Alexander going with Marion lately, Aida had felt less deserving of his time. What should he care about the white witch, useless as she had been in aiding his quest. She hadn't found a way to keep her sacred promise. Aida had tried to bury herself in the study of duelling and magizoology, trying to find the soul she had lost around the time of the house elf incident… but now, looking over to the corner of the room where her owl Scheherazade watched over the crowd and the duel, Aida could not help but feel alone. The owl would do nothing but watch. Maybe she could make friends with one of the duellists at this match, she thought. Pssh, what would anyone want with a schizophrenic white-hair like me, she thought dejectedly. Aida’s eyes stared out sadly, clearly in a deep depression. The least she could do was not let down her new duelling partner.

Another season, another chance at the cup and local renown. With all the studying she'd picked up in anticipation of her approaching O.W.L.s, Phaedra had expanded her arsenal of spells, but desperately needed an outlet. Who would be her pincushion this time? Eyeing up her opponents, hands wringing, she recalled what she knew of their experience; a team to watch out for indeed.

In light of the disappointments of last year's season, there wasn't as much of an age gap between her and her partner this time. They weren't as close as she would have preferred, mind you—as much as she respected the Ravenclaw Captains, she could not wrap her head around their choices when the other house teams had no qualms about partnering their powerhouses together—but at least it meant now that her opponents would have to put more effort into their strategy.

Phaedra took to Aida's side. They formed a contrasting pair. Black and white. In a fleeting moment of thought, it reminded her of classical chess, almost poetic in a way. But could they work with that same strategising in mind? Their practices had indicated so, but the boys on the other side of the piste were likely to be their most challenging yet. She retrieved her wand fearlessly.

Whatever happened, she would give it her all. “Chin up, Aida. Let's make them work for it.”

The first crack of spells across the arena was always the most exciting. Willow happily scooped up Tiger from next to her so she could have some company while she watched. She even caught herself telling the cute cat what was going on. Duelling was complicated! Especially for cats, they can't hold wands people!

Galton was breaking out his deadly spell spread right at the start, and Phaedra didn't even stand a chance against it. She was hit with a strong gust of wind that would leave her injured and wobbly for at least a round. Willow couldn't help but wince and hide Tiger's eyes. Maybe Aida saw it coming once Phaedra was hit, but she dodged the wind that was headed for her. Alan tried to combine another element with Galton's by casting the pressurized water charm at Phaedra. His spell went off seamlessly, but Phaedra was able to sidestep it despite her injury.

Phaedra went the more tactical route, sending a cloud of fog to plague Alan and Aida. Except, Aida could see just fine in the fog it seemed. Alan however, would definitely have some issues seeing through it. Anyone trying to attack the two would have a hard time seeing them through the cloud. Aida joined Phaedra in the tactics, casting the slowing charm at Galton. She hit him square on, and the boy seemed to move a little slower than normal.

This was going to be an interesting duel, Willow could feel it in her bones.

Alan was not exactly sure what he had expected, aiming at Phaedra out of all people had been crazy reckless. Of course he would have a hard time with that, no wonder. As he would cast at her, she easily dodged out of the spells way, which was already a bad sign for the Gryffindor. It truly was not the best way to open a duel. But he would not let this accident demoralize him, it had been a worthy attempt at least. He truly would need to work on his aim!

As he glanced at his duelling partner, Galton, he would see him get hit by a spell and suddenly the other boy's movements slowed down and became sluggish even. "You alright, mate?" he would ask, his gaze focusing on the Ravenclaw who had cast the spell. But the view would not stay clear as it was, when the older Ravenclaw would unleash clouds of thick fog that would localize around Alan and the girl he had been trying to get a look at. It would become much harder now, he would barely see his own hand in front of his eyes and the girl? The girl's body had been reduced to a odd shape within the fog on the other side of the piste. There was no possibility in actually recognizing any features, making Alan huff in frustration. Stupid fog...

Splitting spells was always a gamble. There was a lot to focus on all at once. Keep your attention between two targets, produce the spell in a way that it can then hit both of those targets. It was a bit of a mental overload. Galton had done it many times at this point, and just like a normal spell, it was always a gamble. Forming the spell felt normal. Practiced and average, the magic swelled on the tip of the wand before he fired it off. With Alan the Astounding by his side, Galton knew at least one of the paths would hit. He could feel it in his gut. Galton was good at listening to his gut.

His gut had been right! One of his spells landed, wind wiping all around Phaedra. Score. He had been hit with a spell! Not score. His legs started to drag and taking steps was getting harder. Hmm, what a predicament. When his partner yelled out to him, Galton turned over to find Alan enveloped in fog. Galton screamed "Ummmm, just seemed to step in a bit of sticky caramel!" back into the fog.

Fog, no fog, it was no matter. Aida could not be stopped from seeing, knowing, except– except in the one thing that actually mattered, finding the villain that had stolen away pieces of Alexander’s mind. Aida was nothing if not observant but even after all the struggle, nothing had come to light. It was as if none of it had existed at all, a delusion like so many she’d had. The only evidence was in a hazy memory and the look in Alexander’s eyes, but she had to believe in those lest she become gaslighted by her own fear of failure.

Looking across the piste, Aida saw the struggle of Alan trying to see through the fog. She would have felt sympathy if she were not already doused in self-hatred from seeing herself in his position metaphorically. Aida needed to see what could not be seen with the eyes, fog or no fog. That was all that mattered. The problem was finding how.

Wand in hand, Aida knew she had power. The power to what? Where to go, what to do? The one consolation about duelling was that the directive was clear: the opposition must fall. Raising the black swamp stick, Aida focused on the weight of it in her hand, hoping to feel like she was getting somewhere, going towards some true destiny. Yet, in her heart the cold drafts of doubt slipped along like high winds that had no purpose in their circling of the globe.

Then, from her side, Aida heard words of encouragement from her duelling partner. Apparently Aida's sorrowful face had been recognized for what it was by Phaedra, dark of countenance, alongside the immutable glow that was Aida. Even if just for one small moment, Phaedra had put out a piece of her heart for Aida, even without having been asked for it. This was important, Aida felt.

”I will fight for you.” replied the white witch through her dry throat. Aida had always been socially awkward, but she always said what she really felt even if it lacked context or explanation. Touched by Phaedra’s small gesture, Aida’s resolve strengthened. In this moment, she would fight for Phaedra’s victory. That would be Aida's purpose.
